शिवजी का भयानक शाप सुनकर गुरुजी ने हाहाकार किया। मुझे काँपता हुआ देखकर उनके हृदय में बड़ा संताप उत्पन्न हुआ।
English Translation:
Hearing Lord Shiv’s terrible curse, my Guru burst into a loud lamentation. Seeing me shivering with fear, his heart was filled with distress.
भावार्थ:
प्रेम सहित दण्डवत् करके वे ब्राह्मण श्री शिवजी के सामने हाथ जोड़कर मेरी भयंकर गति का विचार कर गदगद वाणी से विनती करने लगे।
English Translation:
Realizing the dreadful fate I had been cursed with, the Brahmin affectionately prostrated before Lord Shiv and, with joined palms, pleaded in a voice choked with emotion.
भावार्थ:
हे मोक्षस्वरूप, व्यापक, ब्रह्म और वेदस्वरूप, सबके स्वामी श्री शिवजी! मैं आपको नमस्कार करता हूँ। आप निजस्वरूप में स्थित, गुणरहित, विकल्परहित, इच्छारहित, चेतन आकाश रूप एवं दिगम्बर हैं, मैं आपको भजता हूँ।
English Translation:
I bow to you, Lord Shiv, the sovereign of all directions. You are the bestower of liberation, all-pervading, and the very essence of the Vedas. Free from attributes and dualities, You manifest as the infinite expanse of conscious space. I worship You.
भावार्थ:
आप निराकार, ओंकार के मूल, तुरीय स्वरूप, वाणी, ज्ञान और इन्द्रियों से परे, कैलाशपति, विकराल, महाकाल के भी काल, कृपालु, गुणों के भण्डार और संसार से परे हैं — आपको मैं नमस्कार करता हूँ।
English Translation:
I bow to You, O Lord Shiv — the formless origin of Om, transcendent beyond all speech, knowledge, and senses. You are fearsome, merciful, and even time fears You. You are beyond this world, the treasure-house of virtues.
भावार्थ:
आप हिमाचल के समान गौर वर्ण और गंभीर हैं। आपके श्री अंगों की शोभा करोड़ों कामदेवों को भी मात देती है। सिर पर गंगाजी, ललाट पर चंद्रमा और गले में सर्प सुशोभित हैं।
English Translation:
You shine like the snowy Himalayas, radiating with beauty surpassing countless Cupids. Ganga flows from Your matted locks, the crescent moon glows on Your brow, and serpents coil around Your neck in divine elegance.
भावार्थ:
आपके कानों में कुण्डल झूल रहे हैं, भौंहें मनमोहक हैं, नेत्र विशाल हैं, मुख प्रसन्न है, कंठ नील है, आप दयालु हैं। सिंहचर्म पहनते हैं, मुण्डमाला धारण करते हैं — उन सबके प्यारे शंकर को मैं भजता हूँ।
English Translation:
Your earrings swing with each movement, and Your eyes are vast and serene. With a smiling face, a blue throat, and compassionate heart, You wear lion’s skin and a garland of skulls. I worship You, beloved Lord of all.
भावार्थ:
आप प्रचण्ड, श्रेष्ठ, निर्भीक परमेश्वर हैं। आप अखण्ड, अजन्मे, करोड़ों सूर्यों के समान प्रकाशमान हैं। त्रिविध शूलों (आधिभौतिक, आधिदैविक, आध्यात्मिक दुःखों) को नष्ट करने वाले, त्रिशूलधारी, भाव के द्वारा उपलब्ध होने वाले भवानीपति को मैं भजता हूँ।
English Translation:
You are fierce, supreme, fearless — the undivided, unborn Lord who shines like countless suns. Destroyer of all sorrows and bearer of the trident, O beloved of Bhavani, You are attainable through devotion. I worship You.
भावार्थ:
आप कलाओं से परे, कल्याणमय, कल्पांतकारी, सदा सज्जनों को आनंद देने वाले हैं। आप त्रिपुरारी, सच्चिदानंदमय, मोहहर, और कामदेव के शत्रु हैं। हे प्रभो! प्रसन्न होइए, प्रसन्न होइए।
English Translation:
Beyond all arts, ever-auspicious, and the one who dissolves the universe, You give joy to the virtuous. The destroyer of Tripura, embodiment of bliss, remover of delusion, and enemy of Kaamdev — be gracious, O Lord!
भावार्थ:
जब तक मनुष्य पार्वतीनाथ के चरण कमलों की भक्ति नहीं करते, तब तक उन्हें न इस लोक और न परलोक में सुख-शांति प्राप्त होती है। हे प्रभो! जो सब जीवों के हृदय में निवास करते हैं — कृपा कीजिए।
English Translation:
Without devotion to the lotus feet of Uma’s Lord, one finds neither peace nor bliss in this world or beyond. O Lord who dwells within all beings — show mercy, I pray!
भावार्थ:
मैं न योग जानता हूँ, न जप, न पूजा ही। हे शंभो! मैं तो आपको सदा-सर्वदा नमन करता हूँ। जन्म-जरा आदि दुःखों से जलते हुए मुझ दुःखी की रक्षा कीजिए। मैं आपको नमस्कार करता हूँ।
English Translation:
I know not yoga, chants, or formal worship — I only bow always to You, O Shambhu. Burnt by the miseries of aging and birth, protect this suffering soul. I bow to You, my Lord, my Shambhu.
भावार्थ:
यह रुद्राष्टक ब्राह्मण द्वारा भगवान हर (शिवजी) को प्रसन्न करने के लिए कहा गया। जो भी मनुष्य इसे श्रद्धा से पढ़ता है, उन पर शम्भु प्रसन्न होते हैं।
English Translation:
This Rudrashtakam, an eight-verse hymn, was composed by the Brahmin to please Lord Har (Shiv). Those who recite it with devotion are blessed by Lord Shambhu.
भावार्थ:
सर्वज्ञ शिवजी ने ब्राह्मण की विनती और उसका प्रेम देखा। तब मंदिर में आकाशवाणी हुई — हे द्विजश्रेष्ठ! वर माँगो।
English Translation:
Hearing the humble plea and seeing the Brahmin’s deep love, the all-knowing Lord Shiv caused a divine voice to echo through the temple — “O noble Brahmin, ask for a boon!”
भावार्थ:
(ब्राह्मण ने कहा-) हे प्रभो! यदि आप मुझ पर प्रसन्न हैं और हे नाथ! यदि इस दीन पर आपका स्नेह है, तो पहले अपने चरणों की भक्ति देकर फिर दूसरा वर दीजिए॥108ख॥
English Translation:
The Brahmin replied, “O’ Lord, if you are truly pleased with me, O’ Most gracious and benevolent One to the afflicted, then first grant me unwavering devotion to your lotus feet. After that, bestow upon me another boon…”
भावार्थ:
हे प्रभो! यह अज्ञानी जीव आपकी माया के वश होकर निरंतर भूला फिरता है। हे कृपा के समुद्र भगवान्! उस पर क्रोध न कीजिए॥108ग॥
English Translation:
Under the sway of Your Maya, the ignorant living being endlessly wanders, lost in the cycle of mundane existence. Therefore, O’ Merciful Lord, please do not be angry with him…
भावार्थ:
हे दीनों पर दया करने वाले (कल्याणकारी) शंकर! अब इस पर कृपालु होइए (कृपा कीजिए), जिससे हे नाथ! थोड़े ही समय में इस पर शाप के बाद अनुग्रह (शाप से मुक्ति) हो जाए॥108घ॥
English Translation:
Now, be gracious upon this pitiable being, O’ Lord Shankar, O’ Compassionate One to the afflicted. Bless him my Lord, so that the effect of Your curse may end soon…
भावार्थ:
हे कृपानिधान! अब वही कीजिए, जिससे इसका परम कल्याण हो। दूसरे के हित से सनी हुई ब्राह्मण की वाणी सुनकर फिर आकाशवाणी हुई- ‘एवमस्तु’ (ऐसा ही हो)॥1॥
English Translation:
Now, O’ Mine of mercy, do only that which brings him supreme blessedness.” Hearing the Brahmin’s words, filled with compassion and benevolence for others, the heavenly voice of Lord Shiv replied, “So be it!”…
भावार्थ:
यद्यपि इसने भयानक पाप किया है और मैंने भी इसे क्रोध करके शाप दिया है, तो भी तुम्हारी साधुता देखकर मैं इस पर विशेष कृपा करूँगा॥2॥
English Translation:
Though he has committed a grievous sin, for which, in my wrath, I pronounced a curse upon him, yet, out of regard for your goodness, I will bestow a special grace upon him…
भावार्थ:
हे द्विज! जो क्षमाशील एवं परोपकारी होते हैं, वे मुझे वैसे ही प्रिय हैं जैसे खरारि श्री रामचंद्रजी। हे द्विज! मेरा शाप व्यर्थ नहीं जाएगा। यह हजार जन्म अवश्य पाएगा॥3॥
English Translation:
A Brahmin with a forgiving nature and benevolence towards others is as dear to me as Shri Ram, the slayer of the demon Khar. O’ Brahmin, my curse will not be in vain; this man shall indeed have a thousand births…
भावार्थ:
परंतु जन्मने और मरने में जो दुःसह दुःख होता है, इसको वह दुःख जरा भी न व्यापेगा और किसी भी जन्म में इसका ज्ञान नहीं मिटेगा। हे शूद्र! मेरा प्रामाणिक (सत्य) वचन सुन॥4॥
English Translation:
However, the terrible agony of successive births and deaths shall not affect him in the slightest. His knowledge will remain intact in every birth. Listen, to my truthful words O’ Shudra (Lord Shiv speaks to the disciple)…

(प्रथम तो) तेरा जन्म श्री रघुनाथजी की पुरी में हुआ। फिर तूने मेरी सेवा में मन लगाया। पुरी के प्रभाव और मेरी कृपा से तेरे हृदय में रामभक्ति उत्पन्न होगी॥5॥

First, you were born in Lord Raghupati’s Kingdom, where you served me with devotion in that life. Through the miraculous power of that sacred city and by my grace, devotion to Lord Ram shall awaken in your heart…
भावार्थ:
हे भाई! अब मेरा सत्य वचन सुन। द्विजों की सेवा ही भगवान् को प्रसन्न करने वाला व्रत है। अब कभी ब्राह्मण का अपमान न करना। संतों को अनंत श्री भगवान् ही के समान जानना॥6॥
English Translation:
(Lord Shiv continued speaking to the disciple) O’ Brother, listen to my solemn declaration: Serving a Brahmin brings immense joy to Lord Hari’s heart. From this moment onward, never insult a Brahmin; regard them as equal to the infinite Lord…
भावार्थ:
इंद्र के वज्र, मेरे विशाल त्रिशूल, काल के दंड और श्री हरि के विकराल चक्र के मारे भी जो नहीं मरता, वह भी विप्रद्रोह रूपी अग्नि से भस्म हो जाता है॥7॥

Even a person who does not succumb to the strike of Lord Indra’s thunderbolt, my mighty trident, the rod of the God of Death, or the dreadful discus of Lord Hari, will inevitably be consumed by fire in the form of hostility toward the Brahmins…
भावार्थ:
ऐसा विवेक मन में रखना। फिर तुम्हारे लिए जगत् में कुछ भी दुर्लभ न होगा। मेरा एक और भी आशीर्वाद है कि तुम्हारी सर्वत्र अबाध गति होगी (अर्थात् तुम जहाँ जाना चाहोगे, वहीं बिना रोक-टोक के जा सकोगे)॥8॥
English Translation:
Keep this wisdom in your heart, and nothing in this world will be too difficult for you to attain. I grant you one more blessing: you shall have unhindered access everywhere.”…
भावार्थ:
(आकाशवाणी के द्वारा) शिवजी के वचन सुनकर गुरुजी हर्षित होकर ‘ऐसा ही हो’ यह कहकर मुझे बहुत समझाकर और शिवजी के चरणों को हृदय में रखकर अपने घर गए॥109क॥
English Translation:
Hearing Lord Shiv’s words, the Guru was overjoyed and exclaimed, “Indeed it shall be so!” Then, after admonishing me, he returned home, invoking Lord Shambhu’s feet in his heart.
भावार्थ:
काल की प्रेरणा से मैं विन्ध्याचल में जाकर सर्प हुआ। फिर कुछ काल बीतने पर बिना ही परिश्रम (कष्ट) के मैंने वह शरीर त्याग दिया॥109ख॥
English Translation:
Driven by destiny, I found myself at the Vindhya mountains, where I took birth as a serpent. After the lapse of some time, I effortlessly shed that form as well…
भावार्थ:
हे हरिवाहन! मैं जो भी शरीर धारण करता, उसे बिना ही परिश्रम वैसे ही सुखपूर्वक त्याग देता था, जैसे मनुष्य पुराना वस्त्र त्याग देता है और नया पहिन लेता है॥109ग॥
English Translation:
O’ Mount of Lord Hari, regardless of the form I took, I was able to shed it with the utmost ease, much like a person discards old clothes and adorns new ones…
भावार्थ:
शिवजी ने वेद की मर्यादा की रक्षा की और मैंने क्लेश भी नहीं पाया। इस प्रकार हे पक्षीराज! मैंने बहुत से शरीर धारण किए, पर मेरा ज्ञान नहीं गया॥109घ॥
English Translation:
Lord Shiv upheld the Vedic law, while sparing me from the affliction tied to the cycles of birth and death. Thus, I assumed countless forms, yet my knowledge remained undiminished, O’ King of Birds…
भावार्थ:
तिर्यक् योनि (पशु-पक्षी), देवता या मनुष्य का, जो भी शरीर धारण करता, वहाँ-वहाँ (उस-उस शरीर में) मैं श्री रामजी का भजन जारी रखता। (इस प्रकार मैं सुखी हो गया), परंतु एक शूल मुझे बना रहा। गुरुजी का कोमल, सुशील स्वभाव मुझे कभी नहीं भूलता (अर्थात् मैंने ऐसे कोमल स्वभाव दयालु गुरु का अपमान किया, यह दुःख मुझे सदा बना रहा)॥1॥
English Translation:
Whatever form I took, be it a bird, insect, worm, animal, Demigod, or human, I remained steadfast on the path of devotion to Shri Raghupati in each of those forms. Yet, there was a thorn that kept piercing me – I could not forget the kind and amiable disposition of my guru (whom I had disrespected)…

मैंने अंतिम शरीर ब्राह्मण का पाया, जिसे पुराण और वेद देवताओं को भी दुर्लभ बताते हैं। मैं वहाँ (ब्राह्मण शरीर में) भी बालकों में मिलकर खेलता तो श्री रघुनाथजी की ही सब लीलाएँ किया करता॥2॥

Eventually, I was born as a Brahmin, a form even the Demigods find hard to attain, as proclaimed by the Vedas. As a Brahmin boy, I would play with other children, joyfully re-enacting the playful exploits of Lord Raghunayak…

सयाना होने पर पिताजी मुझे पढ़ाने लगे। मैं समझता, सुनता और विचारता, पर मुझे पढ़ना अच्छा नहीं लगता था। मेरे मन से सारी वासनाएँ भाग गईं। केवल श्री रामजी के चरणों में लव लग गई॥3॥
English Translation:
As I grew older, my father began teaching me various subjects. I tried to comprehend them, listened attentively, and reflected upon the lessons; yet they failed to captivate my mind. All worldly cravings had departed from my heart, leaving me drawn solely to the devotion of Lord Ram’s feet…
भावार्थ:
हे गरुड़जी! कहिए, ऐसा कौन अभागा होगा जो कामधेनु को छोड़कर गदही की सेवा करेगा? प्रेम में मग्न रहने के कारण मुझे कुछ भी नहीं सुहाता। पिताजी पढ़ा-पढ़ाकर हार गए॥4॥
English Translation:
Tell me, O’ King of Birds, who could be so unfortunate as to serve a donkey after renouncing Kamdhenu (the celestial cow that fulfils all desires)? Overwhelmed with love for Lord Ram, nothing pleased me, and my father grew tired of teaching me repeatedly…
भावार्थ:
जब पिता-माता कालवश हो गए (मर गए), तब मैं भक्तों की रक्षा करने वाले श्री रामजी का भजन करने के लिए वन में चला गया। वन में जहाँ-जहाँ मुनीश्वरों के आश्रम पाता, वहाँ-वहाँ जा-जाकर उन्हें सिर नवाता॥5॥
English Translation:
After my father and mother passed away, I left for the forest to devote myself to the worship of Shri Ram, the Protector of His servants. Whenever I met a great sage, I visited his hermitage and humbly bowed before him…
भावार्थ:
हे गरुड़जी ! उनसे मैं श्री रामजी के गुणों की कथाएँ पूछता। वे कहते और मैं हर्षित होकर सुनता। इस प्रकार मैं सदा-सर्वदा श्री हरि के गुणानुवाद सुनता फिरता। शिवजी की कृपा से मेरी सर्वत्र अबाधित गति थी (अर्थात् मैं जहाँ चाहता वहीं जा सकता था)॥6॥
English Translation:
O’ King of Birds, I would ask the sages about the countless virtues of Shri Ram, and when they shared them with me, my heart would overflow with joy. In this manner, I wandered freely, listening to the glorious tales of Lord Hari’s praises. By the grace of Lord Shambhu, my movements were unrestricted everywhere.
