• मैं खल मल संकुल मति नीच जाति बस मोह।
  हरि जन द्विज देखें जरउँ करउँ बिष्नु कर द्रोह॥105क॥

भावार्थ:
मैं दुष्ट, नीच जाति और पापमयी मलिन बुद्धि वाला मोहवश श्री हरि के भक्तों और द्विजों को देखते ही जल उठता और विष्णु भगवान्‌ से द्रोह करता था।

English Translation:
I was a wretch, impure in mind, sinful, of low character, and consumed by infatuation. Whenever I saw a devotee of Lord Hari or a Brahmin, I burned with jealousy and harboured hatred toward Lord Vishnu.

• गुर नित मोहि प्रबोध दुखित देखि आचरन मम।
  मोहि उपजइ अति क्रोध दंभिहि नीति कि भावई॥105ख॥

भावार्थ:
गुरुजी मेरे आचरण देखकर दुखित थे। वे मुझे नित्य ही भली-भाँति समझाते, पर मुझे अत्यंत क्रोध उत्पन्न होता। दंभी को कभी नीति अच्छी लगती है?

English Translation:
My Guru imparted valuable wisdom to me daily and felt sorrowful seeing my attitude. However, hearing his words, I was consumed by anger instead. Someone who is overly proud—can he truly appreciate wisdom?

• एक बार गुर लीन्ह बोलाई। मोहि नीति बहु भाँति सिखाई॥
  सिव सेवा कर फल सुत सोई। अबिरल भगति राम पद होई॥1॥

भावार्थ:
एक बार गुरुजी ने मुझे बुला लिया और बहुत प्रकार से नीति की शिक्षा दी कि हे पुत्र! शिवजी की सेवा का फल यही है कि श्री रामजी के चरणों में प्रगाढ़ भक्ति हो।

English Translation:
Once my Guru called me and imparted wisdom in every possible way. He said, ‘Son, the ultimate fruit of worshipping Lord Shiv is to attain steadfast devotion to the feet of Lord Ram.’

• रामहि भजहिं तात सिव धाता। नर पावँर कै केतिक बाता॥
  जासु चरन अज सिव अनुरागी। तासु द्रोहँ सुख चहसि अभागी॥2॥

भावार्थ:
हे तात! शिवजी और ब्रह्माजी भी श्री रामजी को भजते हैं (फिर) नीच मनुष्य की तो बात ही कितनी है? ब्रह्माजी और शिवजी जिनके चरणों के प्रेमी हैं, उनसे द्रोह करके तू सुख चाहता है?

English Translation:
Son, even Lord Shiv and Lord Brahma worship Lord Ram. What, then, is the worth of a mere human being? Whose feet are revered by both Lord Brahma and Lord Shiv, yet, O’ Unfortunate one, you seek happiness while harbouring animosity towards that very Lord Ram?

• हर कहुँ हरि सेवक गुर कहेऊ। सुनि खगनाथ हृदय मम दहेऊ॥
  अधम जाति मैं बिद्या पाएँ। भयउँ जथा अहि दूध पिआएँ॥3॥

भावार्थ:
गुरुजी ने शिवजी को हरि का सेवक कहा। यह सुनकर हे पक्षीराज! मेरा हृदय जल उठा। नीच जाति का मैं विद्या पाकर ऐसा हो गया जैसे दूध पिलाने से साँप।

English Translation:
When I heard my Guru refer to Lord Shiv as a servant of Lord Hari, my heart burned with agony, O’ King of Birds. I was a lowly being, and the little spiritual knowledge I had acquired only inflated my ego, much like a serpent that grows even more venomous when fed milk.

• मानी कुटिल कुभाग्य कुजाती। गुर कर द्रोह करउँ दिनु राती॥
  अति दयाल गुर स्वल्प न क्रोधा। पुनि पुनि मोहि सिखाव सुबोधा॥4॥

भावार्थ:
अभिमानी, कुटिल, दुर्भाग्य और कुजाति मैं दिन-रात गुरुजी से द्रोह करता। गुरुजी अत्यंत दयालु थे, उनको थोड़ा सा भी क्रोध नहीं आता। वे बार-बार मुझे उत्तम ज्ञान की ही शिक्षा देते थे।

English Translation:
I was egoistic, cunning, unfortunate, and lowly, harbouring hostility towards my Guru day and night. Yet my Guru, being extremely benevolent, never lost his temper and imparted wisdom to me again and again.

• जेहि ते नीच बड़ाई पावा। सो प्रथमहिं हति ताहि नसावा॥
  धूम अनल संभव सुनु भाई। तेहि बुझाव घन पदवी पाई॥5॥

भावार्थ:
नीच मनुष्य जिससे बड़ाई पाता है, वह सबसे पहले उसी को मारकर उसी का नाश करता है। हे भाई! आग से उत्पन्न हुआ धुआँ मेघ की पदवी पाकर उसी अग्नि को बुझा देता है।

English Translation:
A wretched person will first destroy and kill the very person responsible for his rise to glory. Listen, brother, smoke is born from fire. Yet, as it rises to the sky and forms clouds, it returns as rain, extinguishing the very fire that gave it life.

• रज मग परी निरादर रहई। सब कर पद प्रहार नित सहई॥
  मरुत उड़ाव प्रथम तेहि भरई। पुनि नृप नयन किरीटन्हि परई॥6॥

भावार्थ:
धूल रास्ते में निरादर से पड़ी रहती है और सदा सब की लातों की मार सहती है। पर जब पवन उसे उड़ाता है, तो सबसे पहले वह उसी को भर देती है और फिर राजाओं के नेत्रों और किरीटों पर पड़ती है।

English Translation:
Dust lies on the ground, enduring the disgrace of being trampled underfoot every day. Yet, when the wind lifts it, the same dust fills the air, finds its way into the king’s eyes, and even settles on his crown.

• सुनु खगपति अस समुझि प्रसंगा। बुध नहिं करहिं अधम कर संगा॥
  कबि कोबिद गावहिं असि नीति। खल सन कलह न भल नहिं प्रीति॥7॥

भावार्थ:
हे पक्षीराज गरुड़जी! सुनिए, ऐसी बात समझकर बुद्धिमान, लोग अधम का संग नहीं करते। कवि और पंडित ऐसी नीति कहते हैं कि दुष्ट से न कलह ही अच्छा है, न प्रेम ही।

English Translation:
Listen, O’ King of Birds, learn from these examples that the wise should never associate with vile men. Poets and scholars have long established this principle: neither friendship nor enmity with a wretched person leads to any good.

• उदासीन नित रहिअ गोसाईं। खल परिहरिअ स्वान की नाईं॥
  मैं खल हृदयँ कपट कुटिलाई। गुर हित कहइ न मोहि सोहाई॥8॥

भावार्थ:
हे गोसाईं! उससे तो सदा उदासीन ही रहना चाहिए। दुष्ट को कुत्ते की तरह दूर से ही त्याग देना चाहिए। मैं दुष्ट था, हृदय में कपट और कुटिलता भरी थी, इसलिए गुरुजी हित की बात कहते थे, पर मुझे वह सुहाती न थी।

English Translation:
O’ Master, one should always keep their distance from a wicked person, just as one would renounce and let go of a vile being like a stray dog. I was a wretched man, with a heart filled with deceit and cunning, and for that reason, the wise advice of my Guru did not appeal to me.

• एक बार हर मंदिर जपत रहेउँ सिव नाम।
  गुर आयउ अभिमान तें उठि नहिं कीन्ह प्रनाम॥106क॥

भावार्थ:
एक दिन मैं शिवजी के मंदिर में शिवनाम जप रहा था। उसी समय गुरुजी वहाँ आए, पर अभिमान के मारे मैंने उठकर उनको प्रणाम नहीं किया।

English Translation:
Once, while sitting in the temple and chanting Lord Shiv’s name, my Guru arrived. Out of pride, I did not stand up to greet him.

• सो दयाल नहिं कहेउ कछु उर न रोष लवलेस।
  अति अघ गुर अपमानता सहि नहिं सके महेस॥106ख॥

भावार्थ:
गुरुजी दयालु थे, उन्होंने कुछ नहीं कहा, उनके हृदय में लेशमात्र भी क्रोध नहीं हुआ। पर गुरु का अपमान बहुत बड़ा पाप है, अतः महादेवजी उसे नहीं सह सके।

English Translation:
But my Guru was extremely kind; he neither said anything nor felt the slightest anger in his heart. However, Lord Shiv could not tolerate my hugely grievous sin.

• मंदिर माझ भई नभबानी। रे हतभाग्य अग्य अभिमानी॥
  जद्यपि तव गुर के नहिं क्रोधा। अति कृपाल चित सम्यक बोधा॥1॥

भावार्थ:
मंदिर में आकाशवाणी हुई कि अरे हतभाग्य! मूर्ख! अभिमानी! यद्यपि तेरे गुरु को क्रोध नहीं है, वे अत्यंत कृपालु हैं और पूर्ण ज्ञान से युक्त हैं।

English Translation:
A divine voice echoed within the temple, saying, “O’ Unfortunate wretch, dull-witted and egoistic! Though your Guru did not get angry at your disrespect, he is exceedingly compassionate and a fully enlightened saint.

• तदपि साप सठ दैहउँ तोही। नीति बिरोध सोहाइ न मोही॥
  जौं नहिं दंड करौं खल तोरा। भ्रष्ट होइ श्रुतिमारग मोरा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
तो भी हे मूर्ख! तुझको मैं शाप दूँगा, क्योंकि नीति का विरोध मुझे अच्छा नहीं लगता। यदि मैं तुझे दण्ड न दूँ, तो मेरा वेदमार्ग ही भ्रष्ट हो जाए।

English Translation:
Yet, O’ Fool, I shall pronounce a curse upon you. I do not tolerate anyone defying the rules of proper conduct. Wretch, if I do not punish you, the sanctity of my Vedic laws will be compromised.

• जे सठ गुर सन इरिषा करहीं। रौरव नरक कोटि जुग परहीं॥
  त्रिजग जोनि पुनि धरहिं सरीरा। अयुत जन्म भरि पावहिं पीरा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
जो मूर्ख गुरु से ईर्षा करते हैं, वे करोड़ों युगों तक रौरव नरक में पड़े रहते हैं। फिर वे तिर्यक्‌ योनियों में जन्म लेकर दस हजार जन्मों तक दुःख पाते रहते हैं।

English Translation:
Those fools who harbour jealousy towards their gurus are condemned to suffer in terrible hells for millions of years. Thereafter, they are born into lower forms of life, such as birds, insects, worms, and animals, enduring torment for ten thousand successive years in each existence.

• बैठि रहेसि अजगर इव पापी। सर्प होहि खल मल मति ब्यापी॥
  महा बिटप कोटर महुँ जाई। रहु अधमाधम अधगति पाई॥4॥

भावार्थ:
अरे पापी! तू गुरु के सामने अजगर की भाँति बैठा रहा। तेरी बुद्धि पाप से ढँक गई है, तू सर्प हो जा और इस अधोगति को पाकर किसी बड़े पेड़ के खोखले में जाकर रह।

English Translation:
Since you remained seated like a python, O’ Sinful one, you are cursed to become a snake. With a mind tainted by sin, you shall now reside in the hollow of a massive tree, enduring a wretched and impious existence in the most degraded state of life.
