Lomash's Curse and Grace

छूटी त्रिबिधि ईषना गाढ़ी। एक लालसा उर अति बाढ़ी॥
राम चरन बारिज जब देखौं। तब निज जन्म सफल करि लेखौं॥7॥

भावार्थ:
मेरी तीनों प्रकार की (पुत्र की, धन की और मान की) गहरी प्रबल वासनाएँ छूट गईं और हृदय में एक यही लालसा अत्यंत बढ़ गई कि जब श्री रामजी के चरणकमलों के दर्शन करूँ तब अपना जन्म सफल हुआ समझूँ॥7॥

English Translation:
…My deepest threefold desires (offspring, wealth, and fame) had faded away, yet my heart remained overwhelmed with an intense, ever-growing longing to behold the lotus feet of Lord Ram. Only then would I deem the true purpose of my life fulfilled…

जेहि पूँछउँ सोइ मुनि अस कहई। ईस्वर सर्ब भूतमय अहई॥
निर्गुन मत नहिं मोहि सोहाई। सगुन ब्रह्म रति उर अधिकाई॥8॥

भावार्थ:
जिनसे मैं पूछता, वे ही मुनि ऐसा कहते कि ईश्वर सर्वभूतमय है। यह निर्गुण मत मुझे नहीं सुहाता था। हृदय में सगुण ब्रह्म पर प्रीति बढ़ रही थी॥8॥

English Translation:
…Every sage I consulted would say, “The Lord is omnipresent and dwells within every creature.” Yet, I did not favour the belief that God was without form; my heart was more drawn to the aspect of the Supreme Lord with a form…

गुर के बचन सुरति करि राम चरन मनु लाग।
रघुपति जस गावत फिरउँ छन छन नव अनुराग॥110क॥

भावार्थ:
गुरुजी के वचनों का स्मरण करके मेरा मन श्री रामजी के चरणों में लग गया। मैं क्षण-क्षण नया-नया प्रेम प्राप्त करता हुआ श्री रघुनाथजी का यश गाता फिरता था॥110क॥

English Translation:
…Recalling the words of my Guru, my heart became filled with devotion to the feet of Lord Ram. With each passing moment, I found newer and ever deeper love for Shri Raghunath, and I wandered about, singing the ever new virtues of Lord Ram…

मेरु सिखर बट छायाँ मुनि लोमस आसीन।
देखि चरन सिरु नायउँ बचन कहेउँ अति दीन॥110ख॥

भावार्थ:
सुमेरु पर्वत के शिखर पर बड़ की छाया में लोमश मुनि बैठे थे। उन्हें देखकर मैंने उनके चरणों में सिर नवाया और अत्यंत दीन वचन कहे॥110ख॥

English Translation:
…On the summit of Mount Meru, Sage Lomash was seated under a banyan tree. I approached him, bowed my head at his feet, and addressed him with utmost humility…

सुनि मम बचन बिनीत मृदु मुनि कृपाल खगराज।
मोहि सादर पूँछत भए द्विज आयहु केहि काज॥110ग॥

भावार्थ:
हे पक्षीराज! मेरे अत्यंत नम्र और कोमल वचन सुनकर कृपालु मुनि मुझसे आदर के साथ पूछने लगे- हे ब्राह्मण! आप किस कार्य से यहाँ आए हैं॥110ग॥

English Translation:
…O’ King of Birds, upon hearing my gentle and humble words, the gracious sage kindly asked, “O’ Brahmin, what is the purpose of your visit?”…

तब मैं कहा कृपानिधि तुम्ह सर्बग्य सुजान।
सगुन ब्रह्म अवराधन मोहि कहहु भगवान॥110घ॥

भावार्थ:
तब मैंने कहा- हे कृपा निधि! आप सर्वज्ञ हैं और सुजान हैं। हे भगवान्‌ मुझे सगुण ब्रह्म की आराधना (की प्रक्रिया) कहिए। 110घ॥

English Translation:
…Thereupon, I replied, “O’ Ocean of Mercy, you are omniscient and all-wise. Lord, please enlighten me about the method of worshipping the Supreme Lord in his embodied form.”…

तब मुनीस रघुपति गुन गाथा। कहे कछुक सादर खगनाथा॥
ब्रह्मग्यान रत मुनि बिग्यानी। मोहि परम अधिकारी जानी॥1॥

भावार्थ:
तब हे पक्षीराज! मुनीश्वर ने श्री रघुनाथजी के गुणों की कुछ कथाएँ आदर सहित कहीं। फिर वे ब्रह्मज्ञान परायण विज्ञानवान्‌ मुनि मुझे परम अधिकारी जानकर-॥1॥

English Translation:
…O’ King of Birds, the great sage reverently recited tales of Shri Raghupati. Being himself immersed in the knowledge of Supreme Brahm, the enlightened sage, considered me to be a highly worthy candidate for initiation,…

लागे करन ब्रह्म उपदेसा। अज अद्वैत अगुन हृदयेसा॥
अकल अनीह अनाम अरूपा। अनुभव गम्य अखंड अनूपा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
ब्रह्म का उपदेश करने लगे कि वह अजन्मा है, अद्वैत है, निर्गुण है और हृदय का स्वामी (अंतर्यामी) है। उसे कोई बुद्धि के द्वारा माप नहीं सकता, वह इच्छारहित, नामरहित, रूपरहित, अनुभव से जानने योग्य, अखण्ड और उपमारहित है॥2॥

…and began delivering discourses on the Absolute Supreme, the unborn, the One without a second, free from material qualities, the Lord of everyone’s heart, incomprehensible and without desires, nameless and formless, attainable only through realization, the Supreme who is indivisible, incomparable,…

मन गोतीत अमल अबिनासी। निर्बिकार निरवधि सुख रासी॥
सो तैं ताहि तोहि नहिं भेदा। बारि बीचि इव गावहिं बेदा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
वह मन और इंद्रियों से परे, निर्मल, विनाशरहित, निर्विकार, सीमारहित और सुख की राशि है। वेद ऐसा गाते हैं कि वही तू है, (तत्वमसि), जल और जल की लहर की भाँति उसमें और तुझमें कोई भेद नहीं है॥3॥

English Translation:
…beyond the grasp of mind and senses, pure, indestructible, immutable, limitless, and the embodiment of eternal bliss. The sage said, “All that I have described is none other than you, for there is no difference between you and the Lord, just as there is no distinction between water and its wave, as proclaimed by the Vedas.”…

बिबिधि भाँति मोहि मुनि समुझावा। निर्गुन मत मम हृदयँ न आवा॥
पुनि मैं कहेउँ नाइ पद सीसा। सगुन उपासन कहहु मुनीसा॥4॥

भावार्थ:
मुनि ने मुझे अनेकों प्रकार से समझाया, पर निर्गुण मत मेरे हृदय में नहीं बैठा। मैंने फिर मुनि के चरणों में सिर नवाकर कहा- हे मुनीश्वर! मुझे सगुण ब्रह्म की उपासना कहिए॥4॥

English Translation:
…The sage instructed me in many ways, but the idea that the individual living entity is identical to the Absolute Brahm (devoid of material form) did not resonate with my heart. I bowed at his feet and humbly requested again, “O’ Great sage, please teach me how to worship the embodied form of the Lord…

राम भगति जल मम मन मीना। किमि बिलगाइ मुनीस प्रबीना॥
सोइ उपदेस कहहु करि दाया। निज नयनन्हि देखौं रघुराया॥5॥

भावार्थ:
मेरा मन रामभक्ति रूपी जल में मछली हो रहा है (उसी में रम रहा है)। हे चतुर मुनीश्वर ऐसी दशा में वह उससे अलग कैसे हो सकता है? आप दया करके मुझे वही उपदेश (उपाय) कहिए जिससे मैं श्री रघुनाथजी को अपनी आँखों से देख सकूँ॥5॥

English Translation:
…My heart is like a fish in the waters of Lord Ram’s devotion, how can it be separated from it, O’ Wise chief of sages? Please be gracious, therefore, and instruct me in the method by which I may behold the Chief of Raghus, Shri Ram, with my own eyes…

भरि लोचन बिलोकि अवधेसा। तब सुनिहउँ निर्गुन उपदेसा॥
मुनि पुनि कहि हरिकथा अनूपा। खंडि सगुन मत अगुन निरूपा॥6॥

भावार्थ:
(पहले) नेत्र भरकर श्री अयोध्यानाथ को देखकर, तब निर्गुण का उपदेश सुनूँगा। मुनि ने फिर अनुपम हरिकथा कहकर, सगुण मत का खण्डन करके निर्गुण का निरूपण किया॥6॥

English Translation:
…Having feasted my eyes on the Lord of Ayodhya, only then will I listen to your discourse on the attribute-less Supreme Brahm. The sage once again recited the incomparable exploits of Lord Hari. However, ignoring the idea of the Lord having a physical form, the sage focused on the formless nature of the Supreme Being…

तब मैं निर्गुन मत कर दूरी। सगुन निरूपउँ करि हठ भूरी॥
उत्तर प्रतिउत्तर मैं कीन्हा। मुनि तन भए क्रोध के चीन्हा॥7॥

भावार्थ:
तब मैं निर्गुण मत को हटाकर (काटकर) बहुत हठ करके सगुण का निरूपण करने लगा। मैंने उत्तर-प्रत्युत्तर किया, इससे मुनि के शरीर में क्रोध के चिह्न उत्पन्न हो गए॥7॥

English Translation:
…Thereupon, I forcefully shifted the discussion from God’s attributeless form to the embodied form. I countered each of the sage’s arguments with responses of my own. At that moment, signs of anger became evident on the sage’s body…

सुनु प्रभु बहुत अवग्या किएँ। उपज क्रोध ग्यानिन्ह के हिएँ॥
अति संघरषन जौं कर कोई। अनल प्रगट चंदन ते होई॥8॥

भावार्थ:
हे प्रभो! सुनिए, बहुत अपमान करने पर ज्ञानी के भी हृदय में क्रोध उत्पन्न हो जाता है। यदि कोई चंदन की लकड़ी को बहुत अधिक रग़ड़े, तो उससे भी अग्नि प्रकट हो जाएगी॥8॥

English Translation:
…Listen, Lord, excessive disobedience can stir anger even in the heart of an enlightened being. Too much friction can ignite a fire, even from sandalwood…

बारंबार सकोप मुनि करइ निरूपन ग्यान।
मैं अपनें मन बैठ तब करउँ बिबिधि अनुमान॥111क॥

भावार्थ:
मुनि बार-बार क्रोध सहित ज्ञान का निरूपण करने लगे। तब मैं बैठा-बैठा अपने मन में अनेकों प्रकार के अनुमान करने लगा॥111क॥

English Translation:
… The sage, again and again, delivered spiritual teachings angrily, while I sat silently, pondering over various questions in my heart…

क्रोध कि द्वैतबुद्धि बिनु द्वैत कि बिनु अग्यान।
मायाबस परिछिन्न जड़ जीव कि ईस समान॥111ख॥

भावार्थ:
बिना द्वैतबुद्धि के क्रोध कैसा और बिना अज्ञान के क्या द्वैतबुद्धि हो सकती है? माया के वश रहने वाला परिच्छिन्न जड़ जीव क्या ईश्वर के समान हो सकता है?॥111ख॥

English Translation:
…Can anger exist without duality in the mind? Can duality arise without ignorance? The deluded independent living entity, bound by the spell of Maya, can it ever be equal to the Lord?…

कबहुँ कि दुःख सब कर हित ताकें। तेहि कि दरिद्र परस मनि जाकें॥
परद्रोही की होहिं निसंका। कामी पुनि कि रहहिं अकलंका॥1॥

भावार्थ:
सबका हित चाहने से क्या कभी दुःख हो सकता है? जिसके पास पारसमणि है, उसके पास क्या दरिद्रता रह सकती है? दूसरे से द्रोह करने वाले क्या निर्भय हो सकते हैं और कामी क्या कलंकरहित (बेदाग) रह सकते हैं?॥1॥

English Translation:
Can there be any suffering in wishing for the well-being of all? Can someone remain poor while possessing a stone that turns iron into gold upon a mere touch? Can a person hostile to others ever remain free from fear? And can a lecherous individual truly remain unblemished?…

बंस कि रह द्विज अनहित कीन्हें। कर्म की होहिं स्वरूपहि चीन्हें॥
काहू सुमति कि खल सँग जामी। सुभ गति पाव कि परत्रिय गामी॥2॥

भावार्थ:
ब्राह्मण का बुरा करने से क्या वंश रह सकता है? स्वरूप की पहिचान (आत्मज्ञान) होने पर क्या (आसक्तिपूर्वक) कर्म हो सकते हैं? दुष्टों के संग से क्या किसी के सुबुद्धि उत्पन्न हुई है? परस्त्रीगामी क्या उत्तम गति पा सकता है?॥2॥

English Translation:
Can a clan survive after causing harm to Brahmins? Can one continue performing actions with attachment even after attaining self-realization? Has anyone ever developed a good intellect by associating with the vile? Can a person indulging in adultery attain a noble destiny?…

भव कि परहिं परमात्मा बिंदक। सुखी कि होहिं कबहुँ हरि निंदक॥
राजु कि रहइ नीति बिनु जानें। अघ कि रहहिं हरि चरित बखानें॥3॥

भावार्थ:
परमात्मा को जानने वाले कहीं जन्म-मरण (के चक्कर) में पड़ सकते हैं? भगवान्‌ की निंदा करने वाले कभी सुखी हो सकते हैं? नीति बिना जाने क्या राज्य रह सकता है? श्री हरि के चरित्र वर्णन करने पर क्या पाप रह सकते हैं?॥3॥

English Translation:
Can someone who has realized the Supreme Lord fall back into the ocean of mundane existence? Can a person who insults Lord Hari ever find happiness? Can a kingdom endure without the wisdom of statecraft? Can sins remain after recounting the glorious exploits of Lord Hari?…

पावन जस कि पुन्य बिनु होई। बिनु अघ अजस कि पावइ कोई॥
लाभु कि किछु हरि भगति समाना। जेहि गावहिं श्रुति संत पुराना॥4॥

भावार्थ:
बिना पुण्य के क्या पवित्र यश (प्राप्त) हो सकता है? बिना पाप के भी क्या कोई अपयश पा सकता है? जिसकी महिमा वेद, संत और पुराण गाते हैं और उस हरि भक्ति के समान क्या कोई दूसरा लाभ भी है?॥4॥

English Translation:
Can anyone attain pious fame without performing good deeds? Can someone earn a bad reputation without committing sin? Is there any gain as precious as devotion to Lord Hari, the One who is glorified by the Vedas, sages, and the Puranas?…

हानि कि जग एहि सम किछु भाई। भजिअ न रामहि नर तनु पाई॥
अघ कि पिसुनता सम कछु आना। धर्म कि दया सरिस हरिजाना॥5॥

भावार्थ:
हे भाई! जगत्‌ में क्या इसके समान दूसरी भी कोई हानि है कि मनुष्य का शरीर पाकर भी श्री रामजी का भजन न किया जाए? चुगलखोरी के समान क्या कोई दूसरा पाप है? और हे गरुड़जी! दया के समान क्या कोई दूसरा धर्म है?॥5॥

English Translation:
O’ Brother, is there any greater loss in this world than failing to worship Lord Ram even after attaining a human birth? Can there be a greater sin than backbiting, or a virtue far greater than compassion, O’ Mount of Lord Hari?…

एहि बिधि अमिति जुगुति मन गुनऊँ। मुनि उपदेस न सादर सुनउँ॥
पुनि पुनि सगुन पच्छ मैं रोपा। तब मुनि बोलेउ बचन सकोपा॥6॥

भावार्थ:
इस प्रकार मैं अनगिनत युक्तियाँ मन में विचारता था और आदर के साथ मुनि का उपदेश नहीं सुनता था। जब मैंने बार-बार सगुण का पक्ष स्थापित किया, तब मुनि क्रोधयुक्त वचन बोले-॥6॥

English Translation:
In this way, I pondered countless arguments in my heart, without listening to the sage’s teachings with due reverence. Time and again, I defended the embodied form of the Supreme Lord until, at last, the sage spoke these words in anger:…

मूढ़ परम सिख देउँ न मानसि। उत्तर प्रतिउत्तर बहु आनसि॥
सत्य बचन बिस्वास न करही। बायस इव सबही ते डरही॥7॥

भावार्थ:
अरे मूढ़! मैं तुझे सर्वोत्तम शिक्षा देता हूँ, तो भी तू उसे नहीं मानता और बहुत से उत्तर-प्रत्युत्तर (दलीलें) लाकर रखता है। मेरे सत्य वचन पर विश्वास नहीं करता। कौए की भाँति सभी से डरता है॥7॥

English Translation:
“O’ Fool, even after bestowing upon you the supreme knowledge, you have failed to accept it. Instead, you engage in endless arguments and counterarguments. Lacking faith in the truth, you, like a crow, view everything with suspicion!…

सठ स्वपच्छ तव हृदयँ बिसाला। सपदि होहि पच्छी चंडाला॥
लीन्ह श्राप मैं सीस चढ़ाई। नहिं कछु भय न दीनता आई॥8॥

भावार्थ:
अरे मूर्ख! तेरे हृदय में अपने पक्ष का बड़ा भारी हठ है, अतः तू शीघ्र चाण्डाल पक्षी (कौआ) हो जा। मैंने आनंद के साथ मुनि के शाप को सिर पर चढ़ा लिया। उससे मुझे न कुछ भय हुआ, न दीनता ही आई॥8॥

English Translation:
Fool, you are excessively and stubbornly self-opinionated; therefore, you shall immediately turn into a meat-eating bird (crow).” I accepted the sage’s curse with humility, feeling neither fear nor regret about my condition…

तुरत भयउँ मैं काग तब पुनि मुनि पद सिरु नाइ।
सुमिरि राम रघुबंस मनि हरषित चलेउँ उड़ाइ॥112क॥

भावार्थ:
तब मैं तुरंत ही कौआ हो गया। फिर मुनि के चरणों में सिर नवाकर और रघुकुल शिरोमणि श्री रामजी का स्मरण करके मैं हर्षित होकर उड़ चला॥112क॥

English Translation:
Immediately, I was transformed into a crow. Bowing once again at the sage’s feet, I fixed my thoughts on Shri Ram, the crown jewel of Raghu’s clan and, filled with joy, I took flight…

उमा जे राम चरन रत बिगत काम मद क्रोध।
निज प्रभुमय देखहिं जगत केहि सन करहिं बिरोध॥112ख॥

भावार्थ:
(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे उमा! जो श्री रामजी के चरणों के प्रेमी हैं और काम, अभिमान तथा क्रोध से रहित हैं, वे जगत्‌ को अपने प्रभु से भरा हुआ देखते हैं, फिर वे किससे वैर करें॥112ख॥

English Translation:
Lord Shiv says to Parvati ji, “O’ Uma, those who are devoted to the feet of Lord Ram and free from material desires, false pride, and anger, perceive their Lord’s presence in all of creation, how then can they bear hostility against anyone?”

सुनु खगेस नहिं कछु रिषि दूषन। उर प्रेरक रघुबंस बिभूषन॥
कृपासिंधु मुनि मति करि भोरी। लीन्ही प्रेम परिच्छा मोरी॥1॥

भावार्थ:
(काकभुशुण्डिजी ने कहा-) हे पक्षीराज गरुड़जी! सुनिए, इसमें ऋषि का कुछ भी दोष नहीं था। रघुवंश के विभूषण श्री रामजी ही सबके हृदय में प्रेरणा करने वाले हैं। कृपा सागर प्रभु ने मुनि की बुद्धि को भोली करके (भुलावा देकर) मेरे प्रेम की परीक्षा ली॥1॥

English Translation:
“Listen, O’ King of Birds, the sage was not at fault. It is the crown jewel of the Raghu dynasty, Lord Ram, who governs all hearts. The Lord deluded the sage’s mind to test my devotion to Him (Lord Ram)…”

मन बच क्रम मोहि निज जन जाना। मुनि मति पुनि फेरी भगवाना॥
रिषि मम महत सीलता देखी। राम चरन बिस्वास बिसेषी॥2॥

भावार्थ:
मन, वचन और कर्म से जब प्रभु ने मुझे अपना दास जान लिया, तब भगवान्‌ ने मुनि की बुद्धि फिर पलट दी। ऋषि ने मेरा महान्‌ पुरुषों का सा स्वभाव (धैर्य, अक्रोध, विनय आदि) और श्री रामजी के चरणों में विशेष विश्वास देखा॥2॥

English Translation:
When the Lord found me to be His devoted servant in thought, word, and deed, He removed the delusion from the sage’s mind once again. The sage recognized my exceptional modest nature and unwavering faith in Lord Ram’s feet…

अति बिसमय पुनि पुनि पछिताई। सादर मुनि मोहि लीन्ह बोलाई॥
मम परितोष बिबिधि बिधि कीन्हा। हरषित राममंत्र तब दीन्हा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
तब मुनि ने बहुत दुःख के साथ बार-बार पछताकर मुझे आदरपूर्वक बुला लिया। उन्होंने अनेकों प्रकार से मेरा संतोष किया और तब हर्षित होकर मुझे राममंत्र दिया॥3॥

English Translation:
He was deeply saddened and repeatedly regretted his curse. The sage then called me back, consoled me in various ways, and joyfully bestowed upon me a mantra to invoke and worship Lord Ram…

बालक रूप राम कर ध्याना। कहेउ मोहि मुनि कृपानिधाना॥
सुंदर सुखद मोहि अति भावा। सो प्रथमहिं मैं तुम्हहि सुनावा॥4॥

भावार्थ:
कृपानिधान मुनि ने मुझे बालक रूप श्री रामजी का ध्यान (ध्यान की विधि) बतलाया। सुंदर और सुख देने वाला यह ध्यान मुझे बहुत ही अच्छा लगा। वह ध्यान मैं आपको पहले ही सुना चुका हूँ॥4॥

English Translation:
The all-gracious sage taught me how to meditate upon the child form of Lord Ram, which is beautiful, blissful, and extremely dear to me. I have already shared this with you…

मुनि मोहि कछुक काल तहँ राखा। रामचरितमानस तब भाषा॥
सादर मोहि यह कथा सुनाई। पुनि बोले मुनि गिरा सुहाई॥5॥

भावार्थ:
मुनि ने कुछ समय तक मुझको वहाँ (अपने पास) रखा। तब उन्होंने रामचरित मानस वर्णन किया। आदरपूर्वक मुझे यह कथा सुनाकर फिर मुनि मुझसे सुंदर वाणी बोले-॥5॥

English Translation:
The sage kept me in his hermitage for some time and then recited Shri Ramcharitmanas (the Mansarovar Lake of Lord Ram’s divine exploits). After reverently narrating the sacred story, the sage addressed me with the following gracious words:…

रामचरित सर गुप्त सुहावा। संभु प्रसाद तात मैं पावा॥
तोहि निज भगत राम कर जानी। ताते मैं सब कहेउँ बखानी॥6॥

भावार्थ:
हे तात! यह सुंदर और गुप्त रामचरित मानस मैंने शिवजी की कृपा से पाया था। तुम्हें श्री रामजी का ‘निज भक्त’ जाना, इसी से मैंने तुमसे सब चरित्र विस्तार के साथ कहा॥6॥

English Translation:
“O’ Son, I discovered this secret and enchanting lake of Shri Ram’s divine exploits through the grace of Lord Shambhu. Recognizing you as a beloved devotee of Shri Ram, I have narrated it to you in its entirety…”

राम भगति जिन्ह कें उर नाहीं। कबहुँ न तात कहिअ तिन्ह पाहीं॥
मुनि मोहि बिबिधि भाँति समुझावा। मैं सप्रेम मुनि पद सिरु नावा॥7॥

भावार्थ:
हे तात! जिनके हृदय में श्री रामजी की भक्ति नहीं है, उनके सामने इसे कभी भी नहीं कहना चाहिए। मुनि ने मुझे बहुत प्रकार से समझाया। तब मैंने प्रेम के साथ मुनि के चरणों में सिर नवाया॥7॥

English Translation:
…”Son, do not recite it in front of those who lack devotion to Lord Ram in their hearts.” The sage offered me his advice in various ways. After that, I affectionately bowed my head at his feet…

निज कर कमल परसि मम सीसा। हरषित आसिष दीन्ह मुनीसा॥
राम भगति अबिरल उर तोरें। बसिहि सदा प्रसाद अब मोरें॥8॥

भावार्थ:
मुनीश्वर ने अपने करकमलों से मेरा सिर स्पर्श करके हर्षित होकर आशीर्वाद दिया कि अब मेरी कृपा से तेरे हृदय में सदा प्रगाढ़ राम भक्ति बसेगी॥8॥

English Translation:
…The great sage gently caressed my head with his lotus-like hands and joyfully blessed me, saying, ‘Henceforth, by my grace, uninterrupted devotion to Lord Ram shall forever dwell in your heart…

सदा राम प्रिय होहु तुम्ह सुभ गुन भवन अमान।
कामरूप इच्छा मरन ग्यान बिराग निधान॥113क॥

भावार्थ:
तुम सदा श्री रामजी को प्रिय होओ और कल्याण रूप गुणों के धाम, मानरहित, इच्छानुसार रूप धारण करने में समर्थ, इच्छा मृत्यु (जिसकी शरीर छोड़ने की इच्छा करने पर ही मृत्यु हो, बिना इच्छा के मृत्यु न हो) एवं ज्ञान और वैराग्य के भण्डार होओ॥113क॥

English Translation:
…You will forever remain dear to Shri Ram, a treasure trove of auspicious virtues, free from false pride. You will possess the ability to assume any form at will and depart from this world at a time of your choosing. You shall also be a fountain of spiritual wisdom and profound detachment…

जेहिं आश्रम तुम्ह बसब पुनि सुमिरत श्रीभगवंत।
ब्यापिहि तहँ न अबिद्या जोजन एक प्रजंत॥113ख॥

भावार्थ:
इतना ही नहीं, श्री भगवान्‌ को स्मरण करते हुए तुम जिस आश्रम में निवास करोगे वहाँ एक योजन (चार कोस) तक अविद्या (माया मोह) नहीं व्यापेगी॥113ख॥

English Translation:
…Wherever you reside with your mind steadfastly focused on Lord Shri Ram, ignorance will be unable to approach within a radius of twelve kilometers of that hermitage…

काल कर्म गुन दोष सुभाऊ। कछु दुख तुम्हहि न ब्यापिहि काऊ॥
राम रहस्य ललित बिधि नाना। गुप्त प्रगट इतिहास पुराना॥1॥

भावार्थ:
काल, कर्म, गुण, दोष और स्वभाव से उत्पन्न कुछ भी दुःख तुमको कभी नहीं व्यापेगा। अनेकों प्रकार के सुंदर श्री रामजी के रहस्य (गुप्त मर्म के चरित्र और गुण), जो इतिहास और पुराणों में गुप्त और प्रकट हैं। (वर्णित और लक्षित हैं)॥1॥

English Translation:
…You will never experience any suffering arising from time, destiny, temperament, merit, or demerit. There are numerous profound and beautiful secrets about Shri Ram (His character, qualities, and divine exploits), hidden and revealed within the ancient historical Scriptures and Puranas,…

बिनु श्रम तुम्ह जानब सब सोऊ। नित नव नेह राम पद होऊ॥
जो इच्छा करिहहु मन माहीं। हरि प्रसाद कछु दुर्लभ नाहीं॥2॥

भावार्थ:
तुम उन सबको भी बिना ही परिश्रम जान जाओगे। श्री रामजी के चरणों में तुम्हारा नित्य नया प्रेम हो। अपने मन में तुम जो कुछ इच्छा करोगे, श्री हरि की कृपा से उसकी पूर्ति कुछ भी दुर्लभ नहीं होगी॥2॥

English Translation:
…which you will come to know without any effort or difficulty. Your love for the feet of Shri Ram will forever remain fresh and grow brighter. Whatever you desire in your heart will be effortlessly attained by the grace of Lord Hari.”…

सुनि मुनि आसिष सुनु मतिधीरा। ब्रह्मगिरा भइ गगन गँभीरा॥
एवमस्तु तव बच मुनि ग्यानी। यह मम भगत कर्म मन बानी॥3॥

भावार्थ:
हे धीरबुद्धि गरुड़जी! सुनिए, मुनि का आशीर्वाद सुनकर आकाश में गंभीर ब्रह्मवाणी हुई कि हे ज्ञानी मुनि! तुम्हारा वचन ऐसा ही (सत्य) हो। यह कर्म, मन और वचन से मेरा भक्त है॥3॥

English Translation:
…O’ Calm-minded Garud ji, upon hearing the sage’s words, a deep divine voice of the Lord echoed from the sky: “May your prophecy ring true, O’ Enlightened sage. He is indeed my devotee in action, thought and word.”…

सुनि नभगिरा हरष मोहि भयऊ। प्रेम मगन सब संसय गयऊ॥
करि बिनती मुनि आयसु पाई। पद सरोज पुनि पुनि सिरु नाई॥4॥

भावार्थ:
आकाशवाणी सुनकर मुझे बड़ा हर्ष हुआ। मैं प्रेम में मग्न हो गया और मेरा सब संदेह जाता रहा। तदनन्तर मुनि की विनती करके, आज्ञा पाकर और उनके चरणकमलों में बार-बार सिर नवाकर- ॥4॥

English Translation:
…Hearing the heavenly voice, I was filled with joy, overwhelmed by love, and freed from all my doubts. After offering humble supplications and seeking the sage’s permission, I repeatedly bowed my head at his feet…

हरष सहित एहिं आश्रम आयउँ। प्रभु प्रसाद दुर्लभ बर पायउँ॥
इहाँ बसत मोहि सुनु खग ईसा। बीते कलप सात अरु बीसा॥5॥

भावार्थ:
मैं हर्ष सहित इस आश्रम में आया। प्रभु श्री रामजी की कृपा से मैंने दुर्लभ वर पा लिया। हे पक्षीराज! मुझे यहाँ निवास करते सत्ताईस कल्प बीत गए॥5॥

English Translation:
…Filled with great joy, I arrived at this hermitage. By the grace of the Lord, I received this unique boon. Listen, O’ King of Birds, I have been residing here for twenty-seven cycles of creation…

करउँ सदा रघुपति गुन गाना। सादर सुनहिं बिहंग सुजाना॥
जब जब अवधपुरीं रघुबीरा। धरहिं भगत हित मनुज सरीरा॥6॥

भावार्थ:
मैं यहाँ सदा श्री रघुनाथजी के गुणों का गान किया करता हूँ और चतुर पक्षी उसे आदरपूर्वक सुनते हैं। अयोध्यापुरी में जब-जब श्री रघुवीर भक्तों के (हित के) लिए मनुष्य शरीर धारण करते हैं,॥6॥

English Translation:
…I constantly sing the praises of Shri Raghupati, and the enlightened birds listen to them with reverence. Each time Lord Raghuveer incarnates in the city of Ayodhya for the sake of His devotees,…

तब तब जाइ राम पुर रहऊँ। सिसुलीला बिलोकि सुख लहऊँ॥
पुनि उर राखि राम सिसुरूपा। निज आश्रम आवउँ खगभूपा॥7॥

भावार्थ:
तब-तब मैं जाकर श्री रामजी की नगरी में रहता हूँ और प्रभु की शिशुलीला देखकर सुख प्राप्त करता हूँ। फिर हे पक्षीराज! श्री रामजी के शिशु रूप को हृदय में रखकर मैं अपने आश्रम में आ जाता हूँ॥7॥

English Translation:
…I go to reside in Shri Ram’s Kingdom and delight in witnessing the playful acts of the child Lord Ram. O’ King of Birds, thereafter, enshrining the image of Lord Ram in my heart, I return to my hermitage…

कथा सकल मैं तुम्हहि सुनाई। काग देहि जेहिं कारन पाई॥
कहिउँ तात सब प्रस्न तुम्हारी। राम भगति महिमा अति भारी॥8॥

भावार्थ:
जिस कारण से मैंने कौए की देह पाई, वह सारी कथा आपको सुना दी। हे तात! मैंने आपके सब प्रश्नों के उत्तर कहे। अहा! रामभक्ति की बड़ी भारी महिमा है॥8॥

English Translation:
…I have now shared the story of how I came to receive this form of a crow. O’ Brother, I have also answered all your questions. Truly, the glory of devotion to Lord Ram is unparalleled…

ताते यह तन मोहि प्रिय भयउ राम पद नेह।
निज प्रभु दरसन पायउँ गए सकल संदेह॥114क॥

भावार्थ:
मुझे अपना यह काक शरीर इसीलिए प्रिय है कि इसमें मुझे श्री रामजी के चरणों का प्रेम प्राप्त हुआ। इसी शरीर से मैंने अपने प्रभु के दर्शन पाए और मेरे सब संदेह जाते रहे (दूर हुए)॥114क॥

English Translation:
…And for this reason, this body of a crow is very dear to me, for it was in this very form that I attained devotion to Shri Ram’s feet. I was blessed with the divine sight of my Lord, and all my doubts were dispelled…

भगति पच्छ हठ करि रहेउँ दीन्हि महारिषि साप।
मुनि दुर्लभ बर पायउँ देखहु भजन प्रताप॥114ख॥

भावार्थ:
मैं हठ करके भक्ति पक्ष पर अड़ा रहा, जिससे महर्षि लोमश ने मुझे शाप दिया, परंतु उसका फल यह हुआ कि जो मुनियों को भी दुर्लभ है, वह वरदान मैंने पाया। भजन का प्रताप तो देखिए!॥114ख॥

English Translation:
…The great sage cursed me for my stubbornness in devotion to the divine form of the Supreme Brahm. Yet, in the end, I was blessed with a unique boon, one that even sages find difficult to attain. Just look at the profound power of worshipping the divine!
