भावार्थ:
हे नाथ! मैंने श्री हरि का अनुपम चरित्र अपनी बुद्धि के अनुसार कहीं विस्तार से और कहीं संक्षेप से कहा। हे सर्पों के शत्रु गरुड़जी! श्रुतियों का यही सिद्धांत है कि सब काम भुलाकर श्रीरामजी का भजन करना चाहिए॥1॥
English Translation:
O Lord, I have narrated to you the incomparable exploits of Lord Hari, both in detail and in brief according to my intellect. O Foe of serpents, the Vedas declare this supreme truth — that one should abandon all else and worship Lord Ram.
भावार्थ:
प्रभु श्री रघुनाथजी को छोड़कर और किसका भजन किया जाए, जिनका मुझ जैसे मूर्ख पर भी स्नेह है। हे नाथ! आप विज्ञान रूप हैं, आप पर मोह का प्रभाव नहीं है, फिर भी आपने मुझ पर अत्यन्त कृपा की है॥2॥
English Translation:
Tell me, who else could be worshipped, forsaking Lord Raghupati — who has shown love even to a fool like me? O Lord! You are the embodiment of knowledge, untouched by delusion, yet you have shown me deep compassion.
भावार्थ:
आपने मुझसे जो रामकथा पूछी है, वह शुकदेव, सनकादि, और शिवजी के मन को प्रिय और अति पवित्र है। संसार में घड़ी भर का या पल भर का भी सत्संग दुर्लभ है॥3॥
English Translation:
You have asked me to narrate the most sacred story of Lord Ram, cherished by sages like Sukdev, the Sanak brothers, and Lord Shambhu. In this world, even a moment or blink of true saintly company is extremely rare.
भावार्थ:
हे गरुड़जी! अपने हृदय में विचार कर देखिए, क्या मैं भी श्रीरामजी के भजन का अधिकारी हूँ? मैं पक्षियों में सबसे नीच और सर्वथा अपवित्र हूँ, पर प्रभु ने मुझे जगत्प्रसिद्ध पावन कर दिया॥4॥
English Translation:
O Garudji, reflect within and consider: am I worthy of singing Lord Raghuveer’s praise? I am low among birds and impure in every way, yet the Lord made me known as a purifier of the world.
भावार्थ:
यद्यपि मैं हर प्रकार से हीन हूँ, फिर भी आज मैं अत्यंत धन्य हूँ क्योंकि श्रीरामजी ने मुझे अपना निज जन मानकर संतों का संग दिया॥123क॥
English Translation:
Though I am lacking in every virtue, today I feel most blessed — for Lord Ram has accepted me as His own and granted me the company of saints.
भावार्थ:
हे नाथ! मैंने अपनी बुद्धि के अनुसार कहा, कुछ भी छिपाया नहीं। श्री रघुनाथजी के चरित्र समुद्र के समान हैं — उनकी गहराई को कौन जान सकता है?॥123ख॥
English Translation:
O Lord, I have spoken according to my understanding, hiding nothing. The stories of Lord Raghunayak are like an ocean — who can fathom their depth?
भावार्थ:
श्रीरामजी के अनेकों गुणों को स्मरण करके, सुजाण भुशुण्डिजी बार-बार आनंदित होते हैं। जिनकी महिमा वेदों ने ‘नेति-नेति’ कहकर गाई है, जिनका बल, प्रताप और प्रभुत्व अतुलनीय है॥1॥
English Translation:
The wise Kak Bhushundi, contemplating Lord Ram’s countless virtues, rejoices again and again. The Vedas sing His glories saying “neti-neti” (not this, not this), for His power and majesty are beyond compare.
भावार्थ:
जिन श्री रघुनाथजी के चरण शिव और ब्रह्मा द्वारा पूजित हैं, उनकी मुझ पर कृपा उनकी परम कोमलता है। ऐसा स्वभाव कहीं सुनने या देखने में नहीं आता। गरुड़जी! मैं किसे रघुपति के समान मानूँ?॥2॥
English Translation:
The feet of Lord Raghunath are revered even by Shiv and Brahma — yet He has graced me. Such tender compassion is unheard and unseen. O King of Birds, who can equal Raghupati?
भावार्थ:
साधक, सिद्ध, जीवनमुक्त, विरक्त, कवि, विद्वान, कृतज्ञ, संन्यासी, योगी, शूरवीर, तपस्वी, ज्ञानी, धर्मनिष्ठ, पंडित और विज्ञानी—॥3॥

भावार्थ:
ये सब मेरे स्वामी श्रीरामजी की सेवा बिना उद्धार नहीं पा सकते। मैं उन्हीं को बार-बार नमस्कार करता हूँ। जिनकी शरण में आकर मुझ जैसे पापी भी शुद्ध हो जाते हैं, उन अविनाशी श्रीरामजी को मैं नमस्कार करता हूँ॥4॥
English Translation:
None of these can be redeemed without serving my Lord Ram. I bow, and bow, and bow again to Him. The Eternal One, at whose refuge even great sinners like me are purified — to Him I offer my salutations.
भावार्थ:
जिनका नाम जन्म-मरण रूपी रोग की (अव्यर्थ) औषध और तीनों भयंकर पीड़ाओं (आधिदैविक, आधिभौतिक और आध्यात्मिक दुःखों) को हरने वाला है, वे कृपालु श्री रामजी मुझ पर और आप पर सदा प्रसन्न रहें।
English Translation:
…whose name acts like a medicine, curing the disease of repeated births and deaths and alleviating the three kinds of terrible pain (Adhyatmik, Adhidaivik, and Adhibhoutik). May the same compassionate Lord Ram always remain propitious to you and me.
भावार्थ:
भुशुण्डिजी के मंगलमय वचन सुनकर और श्री रामजी के चरणों में उनका अतिशय प्रेम देखकर संदेह से भलीभाँति छूटे हुए गरुड़जी प्रेमसहित वचन बोले।
English Translation:
Hearing Kak Bhushundi ji’s blessed discourse and witnessing his unwavering devotion to Lord Ram’s feet, Garud ji, now free from all doubts, affectionately said:
भावार्थ:
श्री रघुवीर के भक्ति रस में सनी हुई आपकी वाणी सुनकर मैं कृतकृत्य हो गया। श्री रामजी के चरणों में मेरी नवीन प्रीति हो गई और माया से उत्पन्न सारी विपत्ति चली गई।
English Translation:
“I am completely gratified after listening to your discourse, steeped in the nectar of Lord Ram’s devotion. I have found intense new love for the feet of Lord Ram, and the troubles caused by Maya have vanished.
भावार्थ:
मोह रूपी समुद्र में डूबते हुए मेरे लिए आप जहाज हुए। हे नाथ! आपने मुझे बहुत प्रकार के सुख दिए। मुझसे इसका प्रत्युपकार नहीं हो सकता। मैं तो आपके चरणों की बार-बार वंदना ही करता हूँ।
English Translation:
You became a vessel for me to cross the vast ocean of delusion. O’ Lord, you have blessed me with happiness in every way. However, I am incapable of repaying the favour and can only bow at your feet again and again.
भावार्थ:
आप पूर्णकाम हैं और श्री रामजी के प्रेमी हैं। हे तात! आपके समान कोई बड़भागी नहीं है। संत, वृक्ष, नदी, पर्वत और पृथ्वी- इन सबकी क्रिया पराए हित के लिए ही होती है।
English Translation:
You are blessedly content and a devotee of Lord Ram. O’ Dear Kak Bhushundi ji, no one is as highly fortunate as you. The sages, trees, rivers, mountains, and the earth—all exist solely for the benefit of others.
भावार्थ:
संतों का हृदय मक्खन के समान होता है, ऐसा कवियों ने कहा है, परंतु उन्होंने कहना नहीं जाना, क्योंकि मक्खन तो अपने को ताप मिलने से पिघलता है और परम पवित्र संत दूसरों के दुःख से पिघल जाते हैं।
English Translation:
Poets proclaim that the hearts of sages are like butter, but they fail to express the truth accurately. While butter melts only when heated, the hearts of saints melt at the mere sight of others’ suffering.
भावार्थ:
मेरा जीवन और जन्म सफल हो गया। आपकी कृपा से सब संदेह चला गया। मुझे सदा अपना दास ही जानिएगा। (शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे उमा! पक्षी श्रेष्ठ गरुड़जी बार-बार ऐसा कह रहे हैं।
English Translation:
My life and birth have been rewarded, and by your grace, all doubts have vanished. Always regard me as your humble servant.” Lord Shiv then said to Parvati, “O’ Uma, the Chief of Birds repeatedly expressed these words.
भावार्थ:
उन (भुशुण्डिजी) के चरणों में प्रेमसहित सिर नवाकर और हृदय में श्री रघुवीर को धारण करके धीरबुद्धि गरुड़जी तब वैकुंठ को चले गए।
English Translation:
After affectionately bowing his head at the feet of Kak Bhushundi, the serene-minded Garud flew towards Vaikunth, having enshrined Lord Raghuveer in his heart.
भावार्थ:
हे गिरिजे! संत समागम के समान दूसरा कोई लाभ नहीं है। पर वह श्री हरि की कृपा के बिना नहीं हो सकता, ऐसा वेद और पुराण गाते हैं।
English Translation:
O’ Girija, there is no treasure more precious than the communion of saints. Such divine association is attainable only through the mercy of Lord Hari, as proclaimed by the Vedas and Puranas.
भावार्थ:
मैंने यह परम पवित्र इतिहास कहा, जिसे कानों से सुनते ही भवपाश (संसार के बंधन) छूट जाते हैं और शरणागतों को कल्पवृक्ष तथा दया के समूह श्री रामजी के चरणकमलों में प्रेम उत्पन्न होता है।
English Translation:
I have recited this supremely sacred account of Lord Ram’s divine exploits. By listening to it, one gets free from the bonds of worldly existence and develops unwavering love for the lotus feet of Shri Ram, the wish-fulfilling tree and embodiment of boundless compassion.
भावार्थ:
जो कान और मन लगाकर इस कथा को सुनते हैं, उनके मन, वचन और कर्म (शरीर) से उत्पन्न सब पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। तीर्थ यात्रा आदि बहुत से साधन, योग, वैराग्य और ज्ञान में निपुणता भी प्राप्त होती है।
English Translation:
Those who listen to this sacred story with focused attention are absolved of all sins committed through thought, word, or deed. They gain the fruits of pilgrimages and other spiritual practices, including mastery in yoga, renunciation, and divine knowledge.
भावार्थ:
अनेकों प्रकार के कर्म, धर्म, व्रत और दान, अनेकों संयम, इन्द्रियनिग्रह, जप, तप और यज्ञ, प्राणियों पर दया, ब्राह्मण और गुरु की सेवा, विद्या, विनय और विवेक की महिमा — ये सब इस कथा में समाहित हैं।
English Translation:
Various righteous deeds and religious disciplines — such as vows, charity, self-restraint, chanting, penance, sacrifices, compassion for beings, service to Brahmins and Gurus, learning, humility, and wisdom — all are encompassed within this sacred tale.
भावार्थ:
हे भवानी! जहाँ तक वेदों ने जितने भी साधन बताए हैं, उन सबका फल श्री हरि की भक्ति ही है। परंतु वह श्री रघुनाथजी की भक्ति, जिसे वेदों ने गाया है, वह भी केवल श्री रामजी की कृपा से ही किसी एक को प्राप्त होती है।
English Translation:
O Bhawani, all spiritual disciplines mentioned in the Vedas culminate in devotion to Lord Hari. However, the devotion to Shri Ram, as extolled by the Vedas, is attained only by a rare soul through Lord Ram’s grace.
भावार्थ:
जो मनुष्य विश्वासपूर्वक इस कथा को निरंतर सुनते हैं, वे बिना किसी कठिन प्रयास के ही मुनियों को भी दुर्लभ श्री हरि की भक्ति को प्राप्त कर लेते हैं।
English Translation:
Those who listen to this divine narrative with steadfast faith attain devotion to Lord Hari — a treasure so rare that even sages struggle to achieve it — without any difficulty.
भावार्थ:
जिसका मन श्री रामजी के चरणों में अनुरक्त है, वही सर्वज्ञ, गुणी, ज्ञानी, पृथ्वी का भूषण, पंडित और दानी है। वही धर्मपरायण है और वही अपने कुल का रक्षक है।
English Translation:
He alone is wise, virtuous, enlightened, a true scholar and generous giver — the one whose heart is devoted to Lord Ram’s feet. He is the embodiment of righteousness and the protector of his lineage.
भावार्थ:
जो छल-कपट छोड़कर श्री रघुनाथजी का भजन करता है, वही नीति में निपुण, परम बुद्धिमान, वेदों के सिद्धांत का जानकार, कवि, विद्वान और रणधीर होता है।
English Translation:
He who discards deceit and worships Lord Raghunath is truly wise, a master of moral conduct, well-versed in Vedic truths, a poet, a scholar, and a valiant warrior.
भावार्थ:
वह देश धन्य है जहाँ गंगा बहती है, वह स्त्री धन्य है जो पति व्रत धर्म का पालन करती है, वह राजा धन्य है जो न्याय करता है, और वह ब्राह्मण धन्य है जो अपने धर्म से नहीं डिगता।
English Translation:
Blessed is the land through which the sacred Ganga flows; blessed is the wife who remains loyal and faithful to her husband; blessed is the king who upholds justice; and blessed is the Brahmin who steadfastly follows his dharma.
भावार्थ:
वह धन धन्य है जिसका पहला उपयोग दान में होता है, वही बुद्धि धन्य और परिपक्व है जो पुण्य में लगी हो। वह घड़ी धन्य है जब सत्संग हो, और वह जन्म धन्य है जिसमें ब्राह्मण की अखण्ड भक्ति हो।
English Translation:
Blessed is the wealth used first for charity; blessed and refined is the mind that engages in virtuous deeds; blessed is the moment spent in the holy company of saints; and blessed is the birth that fosters unbroken devotion to the Brahmins.
भावार्थ:
हे उमा! सुनो, वह कुल धन्य है, संसार में पूजनीय और परम पवित्र है, जिसमें श्री रघुवीर परायण, विनयी पुरुष उत्पन्न होते हैं।
English Translation:
O Uma, listen! Blessed is that family, revered by the world and supremely sacred, in which humble men devoted to Lord Raghubeer are born.
भावार्थ:
मैंने अपनी बुद्धि के अनुसार यह कथा कही। यद्यपि पहले इसे गुप्त रखा था, लेकिन जब तुम्हारे मन में श्री रामजी के प्रति प्रीति अधिक देखी, तब मैंने यह कथा सुनाई।
English Translation:
I narrated this story according to my understanding. Though I initially kept it hidden, I was moved to share it when I saw your deep love for Shri Ram.
भावार्थ:
यह कथा उस मूढ़, हठी, लोभी, क्रोधी और कामी पुरुष को नहीं कहनी चाहिए, जो मन लगाकर श्री हरि की लीला नहीं सुनता और चराचर के स्वामी श्री राम का भजन नहीं करता।
English Translation:
This story should not be told to the obstinate fool who won’t listen attentively to Lord Hari’s exploits, nor to the greedy, angry, or lustful man who refuses to worship the Lord of all creation.
भावार्थ:
ब्राह्मणों से द्वेष रखने वाले को यह कथा कभी नहीं सुनानी चाहिए, चाहे वह इन्द्र के समान ऐश्वर्यशाली राजा ही क्यों न हो। श्रीरामकथा के अधिकारी वे हैं जिन्हें सत्संगति बहुत प्रिय हो।
English Translation:
Never recite this story to someone hostile to Brahmins, even if he be a mighty king like Indra. Only those who cherish the company of saints are worthy of hearing the story of Shri Ram.
भावार्थ:
जिनका गुरु के चरणों में प्रेम है, जो धर्मनिष्ठ हैं और ब्राह्मणों के सेवक हैं — वही इसके अधिकारी हैं। और जिसके लिए श्रीरामजी प्राणप्रिय हैं, उसके लिए यह कथा विशेष रूप से सुख देने वाली है।
English Translation:
He who is devoted to the feet of his Guru, lives by dharma, and serves Brahmins is the true recipient of this story. It brings immense joy to those for whom Shri Ram is dearer than life itself.

Anyone seeking devotion for the feet of Lord Ram or liberation should reverently listen to the story of Shri Ram, drinking it through the cup of their ears.

O’ Girija, I have thus recited Shri Ramcharitmanas, which destroys the sins of Kaliyug and purifies the heart of its impurities. It is like the Sanjeevani herb, a life-giving remedy that cures the disease of birth and death, as proclaimed by the Vedas and affirmed by learned scholars.

Shri Ramcharitmanas consists of seven beautiful steps in the form of chapters. These chapters serve as pathways leading to the ultimate devotion to Shri Raghupati. Only one who is blessed with the boundless grace of Lord Hari can embark on this path of devotion.

Those who recite this story with a heart free of deceit find all their desires fulfilled. Whether one recites it, listens to it, or even appreciates it, they can effortlessly cross the vast ocean of worldly existence, as easily as stepping over the footprint of a cow’s hoof.

After listening to the story of Lord Ram, which greatly delighted Her heart, Goddess Girija joyfully said, “O’ Lord, by your mercy all my doubts have vanished, and I have developed an ever-renewing devotional love for the feet of Lord Ram.”

By your grace, O’ Omnipresent Lord, I am experiencing inner contentment, have developed unwavering devotion to Lord Ram, and all my affliction has come to an end.

The sacred dialogue between Lord Shambhu and Goddess Uma bestows happiness, dispels all distress, ends the cycle of transmigration, and removes all doubts. It brings joy to devotees and is cherished by saints.

There is nothing more endearing to the devotees of Shri Ram in this world than Shri Ramcharitmanas. By the grace of Lord Raghupati, I have narrated this sacred and enchanting tale to the best of my ability.

In this age of Kaliyug, no other discipline is effective — neither yoga, sacrifices, chanting, penance, vows, nor rituals. One should simply meditate upon Lord Ram, glorify Him alone, and constantly listen to the countless virtues of Lord Ram.
English Translation:
The one whose noble vow is to sanctify even the sinners — such is the glory sung by poets, the Vedas, saints, and the Puranas. O mind, give up all crookedness and worship Him! Who has ever failed to attain liberation by worshipping Shri Ram?
भावार्थ:
अरे मूर्ख मन! सुन, पतितों को भी पावन करने वाले श्री राम को भजकर किसने परमगति नहीं पाई? गणिका, अजामिल, व्याध, गीध, गज आदि बहुत से दुष्टों को उन्होंने तार दिया। आभीर, यवन, किरात, खस, श्वपच (चाण्डाल) आदि जो अत्यंत पाप रूप ही हैं, वे भी केवल एक बार जिनका नाम लेकर पवित्र हो जाते हैं, उन श्री रामजी को मैं नमस्कार करता हूँ।
English Translation:
O’ Foolish heart, ponder—who has not attained liberation by worshipping the virtuous Lord Ram, the redeemer of the fallen? The courtesan Pingala, the sinful Ajamil, the hunter Valmiki, the vulture Jatayu, the elephant, and countless other grievous sinners have been saved by Him. Even tribals, outcastes, hunters, dog-meat eaters, and others burdened with extreme sins are purified and liberated by merely uttering His name once. I bow in reverence to that Shri Ram.
भावार्थ:
जो मनुष्य रघुवंश के भूषण श्री रामजी का यह चरित्र कहते हैं, सुनते हैं और गाते हैं, वे कलियुग के पाप और मन के मल को धोकर बिना ही परिश्रम श्री रामजी के परम धाम को चले जाते हैं। जो मनुष्य पाँच-सात चौपाइयों को भी श्रेष्ठ मानकर उन्हें हृदय में धारण कर लेता है, उनके भी पाँच प्रकार की अविद्या से उत्पन्न विकारों को श्री रामचंद्रजी हर लेते हैं।
English Translation:
Those who recite, hear, or sing the glorious deeds of the jewel of the Raghu clan wash away all sins and mental impurities of Kaliyug and reach the divine abode of Lord Ram without effort. Even if one embraces five to seven verses of this tale with devotion, Shri Ram removes the five illusions born of ignorance troubling their heart.
भावार्थ:
जो परम सुंदर, सुजान, कृपानिधान और अनाथों पर विशेष प्रेम करने वाले हैं, वे केवल एक श्री राम ही हैं। उनके समान निःस्वार्थ हित करने वाला और मोक्ष देने वाला कोई नहीं है। जिनकी थोड़ी-सी कृपा से मंदबुद्धि तुलसीदास ने परम शांति प्राप्त की, उनके समान प्रभु कहीं नहीं हैं।
English Translation:
The most graceful, wise, and compassionate toward the helpless is none other than Shri Ram. No one else selflessly blesses and grants salvation like Him. Even dull-minded Tulsidas attained supreme peace through but a speck of His mercy. There is no Lord equal to Ram.
भावार्थ:
हे श्री रघुवीर! मेरे समान कोई दीन नहीं और आपके समान कोई दीनों का हित करने वाला नहीं। ऐसा विचार कर, हे रघुवंशमणि! मेरे जन्म-मरण के भयानक दुःख को हर लीजिए।
English Translation:
O’ Raghubeer! No one is as destitute as I, and none as kind to the wretched as You. Knowing this, O jewel of the Raghu lineage, please destroy the torment of this terrible cycle of birth and death.
भावार्थ:
जैसे कामी को स्त्री प्रिय लगती है और लोभी को जैसे धन प्यारा लगता है, वैसे ही हे रघुनाथजी! आप निरंतर मुझे प्रिय लगिए।
English Translation:
Just as a lustful man longs for women and a greedy man craves wealth, so too, O Raghunath, may You remain ever dear to me, O Ram!
भावार्थ:
भगवान शिवजी, जो श्रेष्ठ कवि हैं, उन्होंने श्री रामजी के चरणकमलों में नित्य भक्ति प्राप्त करने के लिए जो दुर्गम रामायण रची थी, उसी को श्री रघुनाथजी के नाम में निमग्न मानकर अपने अंतःकरण के अंधकार को मिटाने हेतु तुलसीदास ने भाषा में इस मानस को रचा।
English Translation:
The divine sage and poet Lord Shambhu (Shiva) once composed a deep Ramayan to attain constant devotion to the lotus feet of Lord Ram. Inspired by that sacred tale, and with the purpose of dispelling inner darkness, Tulsidas rendered this ‘Manas’ in simple language, immersed in devotion to the name of Raghunath.

यह श्री रामचरितमानस पुण्य रूप है, पापों को हरने वाला, सदा कल्याणकारी, ज्ञान और भक्ति देने वाला, माया-मोह और मल का नाश करने वाला, अत्यंत निर्मल, प्रेम रूपी जल से परिपूर्ण और मंगलकारी है। जो भक्त इस मानस रूपी सरोवर में श्रद्धापूर्वक स्नान करते हैं, वे संसार रूपी प्रचण्ड अग्निकिरणों से नहीं जलते।
English Translation:
This Shri Ramcharitmanas is full of merit, sin-destroying, ever-auspicious, and bestows both knowledge and devotion. It wipes out delusion and impurity, is immaculately pure, filled with the nectar of divine love, and radiates auspiciousness. Those who immerse themselves in it with devotion are never scorched by the blazing rays of worldly sorrows.
भावार्थ:
कलियुग के समस्त पापों का नाश करने वाला श्री रामचरितमानस का यह सातवाँ सोपान (उत्तरकाण्ड) समाप्त हुआ।
English Translation:
Thus ends the seventh step (Uttarkand) of Shri Ramcharitmanas, the destroyer of all sins of the Kaliyug.
