भावार्थ:
प्रेम सहित बार-बार स्तुति करके और सिर नवाकर तथा अपना अत्यंत मनचाहा वर पाकर सनकादि मुनि ब्रह्मलोक को गए।
English Translation:
After repeatedly praising the Lord and lovingly bowing their heads, Sage Sanak and his brothers departed for Lord Brahma’s abode, having received their heart’s most cherished boon.
भावार्थ:
सनकादि मुनि ब्रह्मलोक को चले गए। तब भाइयों ने श्री रामजी के चरणों में सिर नवाया। सब भाई प्रभु से पूछते सकुचाते हैं। (इसलिए) सब हनुमान्जी की ओर देख रहे हैं।
English Translation:
When Sage Sanak and his brothers departed for Brahma ji’s abode, Shri Ram’s three brothers bowed their heads at His feet. However, too modest to ask the Lord directly, they all turned their gaze towards the son of the Wind God.
भावार्थ:
वे प्रभु के श्रीमुख की वाणी सुनना चाहते हैं, जिसे सुनकर सारे भ्रमों का नाश हो जाता है। अंतरयामी प्रभु सब जान गए और पूछने लगे- कहो हनुमान्! क्या बात है?
English Translation:
They wished to hear from the Lord’s own mouth something that would dispel all the delusions of the mind. The Lord, who knows the hearts of all, understood their desire and asked, “Tell me, Hanuman, what is the matter?”
भावार्थ:
तब हनुमान्जी हाथ जोड़कर बोले- हे दीनदयालु भगवान्! सुनिए। हे नाथ! भरतजी कुछ पूछना चाहते हैं, पर प्रश्न करते मन में सकुचा रहे हैं।
English Translation:
With joined palms, Hanuman ji said, “O’ Lord, merciful to the poor, Bharat ji wishes to ask You something, my Lord, but he is too shy to pose the question.”
भावार्थ:
(भगवान् ने कहा-) हनुमान्! तुम तो मेरा स्वभाव जानते ही हो। भरत के और मेरे बीच में कभी भी कोई अंतर (भेद) है? प्रभु के वचन सुनकर भरतजी ने उनके चरण पकड़ लिए (और कहा-) हे नाथ! हे शरणागत के दुःखों को हरने वाले! सुनिए।

भावार्थ:
हे नाथ! न तो मुझे कुछ संदेह है और न स्वप्न में भी शोक और मोह है। हे कृपा और आनंद के समूह! यह केवल आपकी ही कृपा का फल है।
English Translation:
“I have no doubts, grief, or delusion in my heart, not even in my dreams, O’ Lord. This is all by Your grace, O’ Fountain of kindness and joy…”
भावार्थ:
तथापि हे कृपानिधान! मैं आप से एक धृष्टता करता हूँ। मैं सेवक हूँ और आप सेवक को सुख देने वाले हैं (इससे मेरी दृष्टता को क्षमा कीजिए और मेरे प्रश्न का उत्तर देकर सुख दीजिए)। हे रघुनाथजी वेद-पुराणों ने संतों की महिमा बहुत प्रकार से गाई है।
English Translation:
…I make a bold request to You, O’ Ocean of mercy. I am Your servant, and You are the provider of joy to Your devotees. O’ Finest of the Raghus, the Vedas and Puranas have praised the virtues of saintly people in countless ways…
भावार्थ:
आपने भी अपने श्रीमुख से उनकी बड़ाई की है और उन पर प्रभु (आप) का प्रेम भी बहुत है। हे प्रभो! मैं उनके लक्षण सुनना चाहता हूँ। आप कृपा के समुद्र हैं और गुण तथा ज्ञान में अत्यंत निपुण हैं।
English Translation:
…O’ Lord, even You have graciously extolled them with Your own beautiful mouth, as You bear great affection towards saintly people. I humbly request to hear from You about their distinctive traits. You, an ocean of grace, are supremely accomplished in both virtues and wisdom…
भावार्थ:
हे शरणागत का पालन करने वाले! संत और असंत के भेद अलग-अलग करके मुझको समझाकर कहिए। (श्री रामजी ने कहा-) हे भाई! संतों के लक्षण (गुण) असंख्य हैं, जो वेद और पुराणों में प्रसिद्ध हैं।

भावार्थ:
संत और असंतों की करनी ऐसी है जैसे कुल्हाड़ी और चंदन का आचरण होता है। हे भाई! सुनो, कुल्हाड़ी चंदन को काटती है (क्योंकि उसका स्वभाव या काम ही वृक्षों को काटना है), किंतु चंदन अपने स्वभाववश अपना गुण देकर उसे (काटने वाली कुल्हाड़ी को) सुगंध से सुवासित कर देता है।
English Translation:
…The conduct of saints and the wicked is like that of an axe and sandalwood. Listen, brother, the axe cuts down the sandalwood tree, yet the tree leaves its fragrance upon the axe, perfuming it with its virtue…
भावार्थ:
इसी गुण के कारण चंदन देवताओं के सिरों पर चढ़ता है और जगत् का प्रिय हो रहा है और कुल्हाड़ी के मुख को यह दंड मिलता है कि उसको आग में जलाकर फिर घन से पीटते हैं।
English Translation:
…For this reason, sandalwood paste is applied to the foreheads of Demigods and is revered by the world, while the steel edge of the axe is heated in fire and then forged by a heavy hammer as a form of punishment…
भावार्थ:
संत विषयों में लंपट (लिप्त) नहीं होते, शील और सद्गुणों की खान होते हैं, उन्हें पराया दुःख देखकर दुःख और सुख देखकर सुख होता है। वे (सबमें, सर्वत्र, सब समय) समता रखते हैं, उनके मन कोई उनका शत्रु नहीं है। वे मद से रहित और वैराग्यवान् होते हैं तथा लोभ, क्रोध, हर्ष और भय का त्याग किए हुए रहते हैं।
English Translation:
…Saintly people remain detached from sensory desires and are a reservoir of virtues and kindness. They feel sorrow when seeing others in distress and happiness at the sight of others’ joy. They are equipoised, considering no one to be their enemy, are free from false pride, attachment, greed, anger, excitement, and fear…
भावार्थ:
उनका चित्त बड़ा कोमल होता है। वे दीनों पर दया करते हैं तथा मन, वचन और कर्म से मेरी निष्कपट (विशुद्ध) भक्ति करते हैं। सबको सम्मान देते हैं, पर स्वयं मानरहित होते हैं। हे भरत! वे प्राणी (संतजन) मेरे प्राणों के समान हैं।
English Translation:
They are soft-hearted, compassionate towards the distressed, and they cherish unwavering devotion to me in thought, word, and deed. They honour everyone while remaining humble themselves. Such people, Bharat, are as dear to me as life.
भावार्थ:
उनको कोई कामना नहीं होती। वे मेरे नाम के परायण होते है। शांति, वैराग्य, विनय और प्रसन्नता के घर होते हैं। उनमें शीलता, सरलता, सबके प्रति मित्र भाव और ब्राह्मण के चरणों में प्रीति होती है, जो धर्मों को उत्पन्न करने वाली है।
English Translation:
They are free from material desires and remain devoted to my name. They are an abode of tranquility, dispassion, humility, joy, modesty, guilelessness, and friendliness. They remain devoted to the feet of Brahmins, which are the source of all righteousness.
भावार्थ:
हे तात! ये सब लक्षण जिसके हृदय में बसते हों, उसको सदा सच्चा संत जानना। जो शम (मन के निग्रह), दम (इंद्रियों के निग्रह), नियम और नीति से कभी विचलित नहीं होते और मुख से कभी कठोर वचन नहीं बोलते।
English Translation:
Any person in whom all these noble qualities reside should be regarded as a true saint, dear brother. They never deviate from control over the mind, senses, moral principles, or rules of conduct. They never speak harsh words.
भावार्थ:
जिन्हें निंदा और स्तुति (बड़ाई) दोनों समान हैं और मेरे चरणकमलों में जिनकी ममता है, वे गुणों के धाम और सुख की राशि संतजन मुझे प्राणों के समान प्रिय हैं।
English Translation:
Those people who treat both insult and praise equally, stay balanced and devoted to my lotus feet, are the very embodiments of virtue and bliss, remaining ever dear to me like life itself.
भावार्थ:
अब असंतों दुष्टों का स्वभाव सुनो, कभी भूलकर भी उनकी संगति नहीं करनी चाहिए। उनका संग सदा दुःख देने वाला होता है। जैसे हरहाई (बुरी जाति की) गाय कपिला (सीधी और दुधार) गाय को अपने संग से नष्ट कर डालती है।
English Translation:
Now, listen to the traits of the wicked. It is best to avoid any association with such people, even if you come across them unknowingly, as their company always brings sorrow. Just as an inferior cow can ruin a fine Kapila breed cow by being in its company, so do the wicked corrupt those around them.
भावार्थ:
बदुष्टों के हृदय में बहुत अधिक संताप रहता है। वे पराई संपत्ति (सुख) देखकर सदा जलते रहते हैं। वे जहाँ कहीं दूसरे की निंदा सुन पाते हैं, वहाँ ऐसे हर्षित होते हैं मानो रास्ते में पड़ी निधि (खजाना) पा ली हो।
English Translation:
The hearts of the wicked are tormented by terrible agony, as they burn with envy at the sight of others’ success. Wherever they hear insults directed at others, they rejoice as if they have discovered a treasure lying around.
भावार्थ:
वे काम, क्रोध, मद और लोभ के परायण तथा निर्दयी, कपटी, कुटिल और पापों के घर होते हैं। वे बिना ही कारण सब किसी से वैर किया करते हैं। जो भलाई करता है उसके साथ बुराई भी करते हैं।
English Translation:
They are devoted to the pursuit of sensual desires, anger, false pride, and greed. Merciless, deceitful, and cunning, they are a dwelling place of sin. They treat everyone with animosity without any reason. They repay kindness with harm to even those who do good to them.
भावार्थ:
उनका झूठा ही लेना और झूठा ही देना होता है। झूठा ही भोजन होता है और झूठा ही चबेना होता है। वे ऊपर से मीठे वचन बोलते हैं, जैसे मोर साँपों को भी खा जाता है, वैसे ही वे भी निर्दयी होते हैं।
English Translation:
They are wrongful in all their dealings; whether at home, in business, or during meals. Their words are sweet as honey, much like the peacock, which, despite its beauty, has a ruthless heart and consumes even the most venomous snake.
भावार्थ:
वे दूसरों से द्रोह करते हैं और पराई स्त्री, पराए धन तथा पराई निंदा में आसक्त रहते हैं। वे पामर और पापमय मनुष्य नर शरीर धारण किए हुए राक्षस ही हैं।
English Translation:
They are consumed by hostility towards other people, stay obsessed with others’ wives and wealth, and constantly criticize everyone. Such wicked individuals are sinful, resembling man-eating demons in human form.
भावार्थ:
लोभ ही उनका ओढ़ना और लोभ ही बिछौना होता है। वे पशुओं के समान आहार और मैथुन के ही परायण होते हैं, उन्हें यमपुर का भय नहीं लगता। यदि किसी की बड़ाई सुन पाते हैं, तो वे ऐसी साँस लेते हैं मानों उन्हें जूड़ी आ गई हो।
English Translation:
Greed alone is their blanket and bedding (they remain engulfed by greed). Their only goal is to indulge in lust and satisfy hunger, without any fear of hell. If they ever hear someone being praised, they heave a deep sigh as if stricken by high fever.
भावार्थ:
जब किसी की विपत्ति देखते हैं, तो ऐसे सुखी होते हैं मानो जगत के राजा हो गए हों। वे स्वार्थी, परिवार से विरोध रखने वाले, विषयों और धन के लोभी, और अत्यंत क्रोधी होते हैं।
English Translation:
When they see someone in distress, they rejoice as if they have become the emperor of the world. They are selfish, hostile towards their own family, lecherous, greedy, and filled with rage.
भावार्थ:
वे माता-पिता, गुरु और ब्राह्मणों का आदर नहीं करते। खुद तो विनष्ट रहते ही हैं, दूसरों को भी पतन की ओर ले जाते हैं। मोहवश दूसरों से शत्रुता करते हैं। न संतों की संगति उन्हें अच्छी लगती है, न भगवान की कथा।
English Translation:
They show no respect to mother, father, guru, or Brahmins. Not only are they self-ruined, but they also drag others toward destruction. Driven by delusion, they harbor enmity and neither enjoy the company of saints nor delight in stories of the Lord.
भावार्थ:
वे अवगुणों के समुद्र, मंदबुद्धि, कामी, वेदों के निंदक और दूसरों के धन को हड़पने वाले होते हैं। ब्राह्मणों के प्रति विशेष शत्रुता रखते हैं। भीतर कपट और दंभ रखते हुए बाहर से सुन्दर वेश धारण करते हैं।
English Translation:
They are oceans of vices, foolish, lustful, slanderers of the Vedas, and usurpers of others’ wealth. They bear special hatred toward Brahmins and carry arrogance and deceit within while outwardly appearing saintly.
भावार्थ:
ऐसे नीच और दुष्ट मनुष्य सत्ययुग और त्रेतायुग में नहीं होते। द्वापर में थोड़े और कलियुग में बहुतायत से होते हैं।
English Translation:
Such vile and wicked people do not exist in Satya Yuga or Treta Yuga. A few appear in Dwapar, but in Kaliyuga, they will be present in large numbers.
भावार्थ:
दूसरों की भलाई से बढ़कर कोई धर्म नहीं, और दूसरों को कष्ट देने से बढ़कर कोई अधर्म नहीं। यह वेद और पुराणों का निचोड़ है, जिसे विद्वान समझते हैं।
English Translation:
There is no virtue greater than doing good to others, and no sin worse than inflicting pain on others. This is the conclusion of all the Vedas and Puranas, as known to the wise.
भावार्थ:
जो मनुष्य शरीर पाकर भी दूसरों को कष्ट देते हैं, वे जन्म-मरण के महान दुखों को भोगते हैं। मोहवश पाप करते हैं और स्वार्थ में लिप्त होकर अपना परलोक नष्ट करते हैं।
English Translation:
Those who cause suffering to others despite being born as humans are doomed to face great torments of birth and death. Blinded by attachment, they engage in countless sins and destroy their afterlife in selfishness.
भावार्थ:
हे भ्राता! मैं उनके लिए कालरूप हूँ और उनके शुभ-अशुभ कर्मों का फल देने वाला हूँ। इस बात को समझकर जो ज्ञानी हैं, वे संसार के दुःख को जानकर मेरी भक्ति करते हैं।
English Translation:
O brother! To such wicked beings, I appear as the very form of Time (Death), dispensing the fruits of good and evil deeds. The truly wise, understanding the sorrows of the world, worship Me alone.
भावार्थ:
जो लोग शुभ-अशुभ फल देने वाले कर्मों का त्याग करके देवता, मनुष्य और मुनियों के स्वामी मुझे भजते हैं — मैंने उन्हीं के लिए संत और असंतों के लक्षण कहे हैं। जो लोग इन्हें समझ लेते हैं, वे जन्म-मरण के चक्र में नहीं फँसते।
English Translation:
Those who renounce both good and bad deeds and worship Me—whether gods, humans, or sages—are beyond the cycle of birth and death. To them I have described the traits of saintly and wicked men. Those who reflect on them do not fall into worldly bondage.
