• उर लात घात प्रचंड लागत बिकल रथ ते महि परा।
  गहि भालु बीसहुँ कर मनहुँ कमलन्हि बसे निसि मधुकरा॥
  मुरुछित बिलोकि बहोरि पद हति भालुपति प्रभु पहिं गयो॥
  निसि जानि स्यंदन घालि तेहि तब सूत जतनु करय भयो॥

भावार्थ:
छाती में लात का प्रचण्ड आघात लगते ही रावण व्याकुल होकर रथ से पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा। उसने बीसों हाथों में भालुओं को पकड़ रखा था। (ऐसा जान पड़ता था) मानो रात्रि के समय भौंरे कमलों में बसे हुए हों। उसे मूर्च्छित देखकर, फिर लात मारकर ऋक्षराज जाम्बवान्‌ प्रभु के पास चले। रात्रि जानकर सारथी रावण को रथ में डालकर उसे होश में लाने का उपाय करने लगा।

English Translation:
The powerful impact of the kick rendered Ravan unconscious, causing him to fall from his chariot to the ground. He was holding a bear in each of his twenty hands, as if bees were caught in the folds of lotuses during the night. Seeing him unconscious, the King of Bears, Jambvant, kicked Ravan once more before going to Lord Ram. Perceiving that it was night time, Ravan’s charioteer lifted him onto his chariot and made an effort to bring him out of his swoon.

• मुरुछा बिगत भालु कपि सब आए प्रभु पास।
  निसिचर सकल रावनहि घेरि रहे अति त्रास॥98॥

भावार्थ:
मूर्च्छा दूर होने पर सब रीछ-वानर प्रभु के पास आए। उधर सब राक्षसों ने बहुत ही भयभीत होकर रावण को घेर लिया॥98॥

English Translation:
Upon regaining consciousness, the bears and monkeys came to Shri Ram. Meanwhile, all the demons encircled Ravan, in a very frightened condition.

• तेही निसि सीता पहिं जाई। त्रिजटा कहि सब कथा सुनाई॥
  सिर भुज बाढ़ि सुनत रिपु केरी। सीता उर भइ त्रास घनेरी॥1॥

भावार्थ:
उसी रात त्रिजटा ने सीताजी के पास जाकर उन्हें सब कथा कह सुनाई। शत्रु के सिर और भुजाओं की बढ़ती का संवाद सुनकर सीताजी के हृदय में बड़ा भय हुआ॥1॥

English Translation:
That night, a demoness named Trijita went to Sita ji in the Ashok garden and narrated the entire series of events. Upon hearing about the enemy’s heads and arms being renewed, Sita ji was extremely worried in her heart.

• मुख मलीन उपजी मन चिंता। त्रिजटा सन बोली तब सीता॥
  होइहि कहा कहसि किन माता। केहि बिधि मरिहि बिस्व दुखदाता॥2॥

भावार्थ:
(उनका) मुख उदास हो गया, मन में चिंता उत्पन्न हो गई। तब सीताजी त्रिजटा से बोलीं- हे माता! बताती क्यों नहीं? क्या होगा? संपूर्ण विश्व को दुःख देने वाला यह किस प्रकार मरेगा?॥2॥

English Translation:
With her face turning pale and heart filled with distress, Sita Ji spoke to Trijita, “What is going to happen? Why don’t you tell me, mother? How will the one who brings pain to the world meet his end?…

• रघुपति सर सिर कटेहुँ न मरई। बिधि बिपरीत चरित सब करई॥
  मोर अभाग्य जिआवत ओही। जेहिं हौं हरि पद कमल बिछोही॥3॥

भावार्थ:
श्री रघुनाथजी के बाणों से सिर कटने पर भी नहीं मरता। विधाता सारे चरित्र विपरीत (उलटे) ही कर रहा है। (सच बात तो यह है कि) मेरा दुर्भाग्य ही उसे जिला रहा है, जिसने मुझे भगवान्‌ के चरणकमलों से अलग कर दिया है॥3॥

English Translation:
…He is not even dying despite his heads being severed by Raghupati’s arrows. Fate is acting adversely in every way. Perhaps it is my ill luck that sustains him, the same misfortune that separated me from the lotus feet of Lord Hari (Shri Ram)…

• जेहिं कृत कपट कनक मृग झूठा। अजहुँ सो दैव मोहि पर रूठा॥
  जेहिं बिधि मोहि दुख दुसह सहाए। लछिमन कहुँ कटु बचन कहाए॥4॥

भावार्थ:
जिसने कपट का झूठा स्वर्ण मृग बनाया था, वही दैव अब भी मुझ पर रूठा हुआ है, जिस विधाता ने मुझसे दुःसह दुःख सहन कराए और लक्ष्मण को कड़ुवे वचन कहलाए,॥4॥

English Translation:
…It is fate that created the deceitful, illusory golden deer. Even today, the Gods are upset with me. The same Providence that made me endure this unbearable pain also prompted me to speak harsh words to Lakshman…

---

• रघुपति बिरह सबिष सर भारी। तकि तकि मार बार बहु मारी॥
  ऐसेहुँ दुख जो राख मम प्राना। सोइ बिधि ताहि जिआव न आना॥5॥

भावार्थ:
जो श्री रघुनाथजी के विरह रूपी बड़े विषैले बाणों से तक-तककर मुझे बहुत बार मारकर, अब भी मार रहा है और ऐसे दुःख में भी जो मेरे प्राणों को रख रहा है, वही विधाता उस (रावण) को जिला रहा है, दूसरा कोई नहीं॥5॥

English Translation:
…It is the same Providence which is piercing me through and through, time and again, with the mighty and poisonous arrows of separation from Shri Raghunath ji, and which keeps me alive even under such sorrowful circumstances. It is this same Providence which is keeping Ravan alive.”

• बहु बिधि कर बिलाप जानकी। करि करि सुरति कृपानिधान की॥
  कह त्रिजटा सुनु राजकुमारी। उर सर लागत मरइ सुरारी॥6॥

भावार्थ:
कृपानिधान श्री रामजी की याद कर-करके जानकीजी बहुत प्रकार से विलाप कर रही हैं। त्रिजटा ने कहा- हे राजकुमारी! सुनो, देवताओं का शत्रु रावण हृदय में बाण लगते ही मर जाएगा॥6॥

English Translation:
In this manner, remembering the ocean of mercy, Shri Ram, Janaki ji lamented in many ways. Trijita said, “Listen, O’ Princess, the enemy of demons will surely die if an arrow pierces his heart…

• प्रभु ताते उर हतइ न तेही। एहि के हृदयँ बसति बैदेही॥7॥

भावार्थ:
परन्तु प्रभु उसके हृदय में बाण इसलिए नहीं मारते कि इसके हृदय में जानकीजी (आप) बसती हैं॥7॥

English Translation:
…But the Lord is not striking an arrow at his heart because He knows Videhi (You) abide there…

• एहि के हृदयँ बस जानकी जानकी उर मम बास है।
  मम उदर भुअन अनेक लागत बान सब कर नास है॥
  सुनि बचन हरष बिषाद मन अति देखि पुनि त्रिजटाँ कहा।
  अब मरिहि रिपु एहि बिधि सुनहि सुंदरि तजहि संसय महा॥

भावार्थ:
(वे यही सोचकर रह जाते हैं कि) इसके हृदय में जानकी का निवास है, जानकी के हृदय में मेरा निवास है और मेरे उदर में अनेकों भुवन हैं। अतः रावण के हृदय में बाण लगते ही सब भुवनों का नाश हो जाएगा। यह वचन सुनकर सीताजी के मन में अत्यंत हर्ष और विषाद हुआ देखकर त्रिजटा ने फिर कहा- हे सुंदरी! महान्‌ संदेह का त्याग कर दो, अब सुनो, शत्रु इस प्रकार मरेगा-

English Translation:
…Lord Ram realizes that in Ravan’s heart lives Janaki, and in Janaki’s heart is His (Shri Ram’s) own abode. And in His (Shri Ram’s) heart reside countless universes, which will all perish if His arrow pierces Ravan’s heart.” Hearing Trijita’s explanation, Sita ji’s heart was filled with both extreme joy and deep sorrow at the same time. Perceiving this, Trijita spoke again, “O’ Beautiful lady, renounce all your massive doubts and now listen to how the enemy will meet his death…

• काटत सिर होइहि बिकल छुटि जाइहि तव ध्यान।
  तब रावनहि हृदय महुँ मरिहहिं रामु सुजान॥99॥

भावार्थ:
सिरों के बार-बार काटे जाने से जब वह व्याकुल हो जाएगा और उसके हृदय से तुम्हारा ध्यान छूट जाएगा, तब सुजान (अंतर्यामी) श्री रामजी रावण के हृदय में बाण मारेंगे॥99॥

English Translation:
…When Ravan becomes distressed upon seeing his heads severed and his mind wavers from thinking of you, at that very moment, the all-wise Shri Ram will strike an arrow into Ravan’s heart.”

• अस कहि बहुत भाँति समुझाई। पुनि त्रिजटा निज भवन सिधाई॥
  राम सुभाउ सुमिरि बैदेही। उपजी बिरह बिथा अति तेही॥1॥

भावार्थ:
ऐसा कहकर और सीताजी को बहुत प्रकार से समझाकर फिर त्रिजटा अपने घर चली गई। श्री रामचंद्रजी के स्वभाव का स्मरण करके जानकीजी को अत्यंत विरह व्यथा उत्पन्न हुई॥1॥

English Translation:
In this manner, Trijita comforted Sita ji in many ways and then left for her home. Videhi ji then recalled Shri Ram’s kind disposition, which gave rise to deep agony from their separation.

• निसिहि ससिहि निंदति बहु भाँति। जुग सम भई सिराति न राती॥
  करति बिलाप मनहिं मन भारी। राम बिरहँ जानकी दुखारी॥2॥

भावार्थ:
वे रात्रि की और चंद्रमा की बहुत प्रकार से निंदा कर रही हैं (और कह रही हैं-) रात युग के समान बड़ी हो गई, वह बीतती ही नहीं। जानकीजी श्री रामजी के विरह में दुःखी होकर मन ही मन भारी विलाप कर रही हैं॥2॥

English Translation:
She cursed the night and the Moon in many ways, and spoke to Herself, “The night has become long like an era and it is not ending.” Sorrowful due to separation from Shri Ram, Janaki ji lamented deeply in Her heart.

• जब अति भयउ बिरह उर दाहू। फरकेउ बाम नयन अरु बाहू॥
  सगुन बिचारि धरी मन धीरा। अब मिलिहहिं कृपाल रघुबीरा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
जब विरह के मारे हृदय में दारुण दाह हो गया, तब उनका बायाँ नेत्र और बाहु फड़क उठे। शकुन समझकर उन्होंने मन में धैर्य धारण किया कि अब कृपालु श्री रघुवीर अवश्य मिलेंगे॥3॥

English Translation:
When Her heart was filled with immense agony from the separation, Her left arm and eye started to throb. Considering it a good omen, She controlled Her composure and said, “Now the merciful Raghuveer will surely meet me.”

• इहाँ अर्धनिसि रावनु जागा। निज सारथि सन खीझन लागा।
  सठ रनभूमि छड़ाइसि मोही। धिग धिग अधम मंदमति तोही॥4॥

भावार्थ:
यहाँ आधी रात को रावण (मूर्च्छा से) जागा और अपने सारथी पर रुष्ट होकर कहने लगा- अरे मूर्ख! तूने मुझे रणभूमि से अलग कर दिया। अरे अधम! अरे मंदबुद्धि! तुझे धिक्कार है, धिक्कार है!॥4॥

English Translation:
In his palace, at midnight, Ravan came out of his swoon and started to fret at his charioteer. He said, “O’ Fool, you brought me here from the battlefield. Shame, shame on you, O’ Vile, dull-witted one!”

• तेहिं पद गहि बहु बिधि समुझावा। भोरु भएँ रथ चढ़ि पुनि धावा॥
  सुनि आगवनु दसानन केरा। कपि दल खरभर भयउ घनेरा॥5॥

भावार्थ:
सारथि ने चरण पकड़कर रावण को बहुत प्रकार से समझाया। सबेरा होते ही वह रथ पर चढ़कर फिर दौड़ा। रावण का आना सुनकर वानरों की सेना में बड़ी खलबली मच गई॥5॥

English Translation:
The charioteer clasped his feet and explained to him in various ways. When dawn broke, Ravan once again mounted his chariot and rushed to the battlefield. Hearing about the arrival of the ten-headed Ravan, the monkey army was filled with a lot of commotion.

• जहँ तहँ भूधर बिटप उपारी। धाए कटकटाइ भट भारी॥6॥

भावार्थ:
वे भारी योद्धा जहाँ-तहाँ से पर्वत और वृक्ष उखाड़कर (क्रोध से) दाँत कटकटाकर दौड़े॥6॥

English Translation:
The brave fighters uprooted mountains and trees from wherever they could. Gnashing their teeth and making shrill sounds, they sallied forward to clash with Ravan.
