भावार्थ:
अत्यंत भयानक शक्ति को आती देख और यह विचार कर कि मेरा प्रण शरणागत के दुःख का नाश करना है, श्री रामजी ने तुरंत ही विभीषण को पीछे कर लिया और सामने होकर वह शक्ति स्वयं सह ली॥1॥
English Translation:
Seeing the deadly Shakti weapon approaching, Lord Ram recalled His vow to protect and end the distress of the supplicant. He then immediately moved Vibhishan to the back, stepping forward to take the hit from the spear Himself.
भावार्थ:
शक्ति लगने से उन्हें कुछ मूर्छा हो गई। प्रभु ने तो यह लीला की, पर देवताओं को व्याकुलता हुई। प्रभु को श्रम (शारीरिक कष्ट) प्राप्त हुआ देखकर विभीषण क्रोधित हो हाथ में गदा लेकर दौड़े॥2॥
English Translation:
When the Shakti weapon hit Lord Ram, He became unconscious for a while. Although this act was merely a sport on His part, the Demigods were dismayed. Seeing the Lord fatigued from the pain, Vibhishan took his mace in hand and rushed forward in full rage to face Ravan.
भावार्थ:
(और बोले-) अरे अभागे! मूर्ख, नीच दुर्बुद्धि! तूने देवता, मनुष्य, मुनि, नाग सभी से विरोध किया। तूने आदर सहित शिवजी को सिर चढ़ाए। इसी से एक-एक के बदले में करोड़ों पाए॥3॥
English Translation:
Vibhishan shouted, “O’ Unfortunate fool, dull-witted, corrupt-minded wretch, you have always been hostile to Demigods, men, sages, and serpents. You respectfully offered your heads to Lord Shiv and received millions of heads in exchange for every head that you offered to Him…
भावार्थ:
उसी कारण से अरे दुष्ट! तू अब तक बचा है, (किन्तु) अब काल तेरे सिर पर नाच रहा है। अरे मूर्ख! तू राम विमुख होकर सम्पत्ति (सुख) चाहता है? ऐसा कहकर विभीषण ने रावण की छाती के बीचों-बीच गदा मारी॥4॥
English Translation:
…It is for this reason that you have been saved until now, O’ Fool. But now your death has approached and is dancing over your head. Fool, you wish for prosperity through enmity with Lord Ram?” Saying these words, Vibhishan hurled his mace right in the middle of Ravan’s chest.
भावार्थ:
बीच छाती में कठोर गदा की घोर और कठिन चोट लगते ही वह पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा। उसके दसों मुखों से रुधिर बहने लगा, वह अपने को फिर संभालकर क्रोध में भरा हुआ दौड़ा। दोनों अत्यंत बलवान् योद्धा भिड़ गए और मल्लयुद्ध में एक-दूसरे के विरुद्ध होकर मारने लगे। श्री रघुवीर के बल से गर्वित विभीषण उसको (रावण जैसे जगद्विजयी योद्धा को) पासंग के बराबर भी नहीं समझते।
English Translation:
With a mighty blow of the mace to the centre of his chest, Ravan fell to the ground, all his ten mouths spouting blood. Recovering himself, Ravan rushed forward in full fury. The two mighty warriors began a wrestling contest, mauling one another. Inspired by the strength of Lord Ram, Vibhishan didn’t consider his opponent undefeatable.
भावार्थ:
(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे उमा! विभीषण क्या कभी रावण के सामने आँख उठाकर भी देख सकता था? परन्तु अब वही काल के समान उससे भिड़ रहा है। यह श्री रघुवीर का ही प्रभाव है॥94॥
English Translation:
Lord Shiv tells Parvati ji, “Uma, could Vibhishan have ever stood against Ravan in battle? But now he fights with him as if he were Death himself. This is all due to Shri Raghuveer’s influence.”
भावार्थ:
विभीषण को बहुत ही थका हुआ देखकर हनुमान्जी पर्वत धारण किए हुए दौड़े। उन्होंने उस पर्वत से रावण के रथ, घोड़े और सारथी का संहार कर डाला और उसके सीने पर लात मारी॥1॥
English Translation:
Seeing Vibhishan extremely exhausted, Hanuman ji rushed forward with a mountain in his hand, crushing Ravan’s chariot, horses, and charioteer all at once. He then delivered a powerful kick to the middle of Ravan’s chest.
भावार्थ:
रावण खड़ा रहा, पर उसका शरीर अत्यंत काँपने लगा। विभीषण वहाँ गए, जहाँ सेवकों के रक्षक श्री रामजी थे। फिर रावण ने ललकारकर हनुमान्जी को मारा। वे पूँछ फैलाकर आकाश में चले गए॥2॥
English Translation:
Ravan, however, remained standing, though his body was shaking violently all over. Vibhishan then went to where Shri Ram, the protector of devotees, was. Ravan then challenged and struck Hanuman ji. Hanuman ji leaped into the sky, spreading his tail.
भावार्थ:
रावण ने पूँछ पकड़ ली, हनुमान्जी उसको साथ लिए ऊपर उड़े। फिर लौटकर महाबलवान् हनुमान्जी उससे भिड़ गए। दोनों समान योद्धा आकाश में लड़ते हुए एक-दूसरे को क्रोध करके मारने लगे॥3॥
English Translation:
Ravan grabbed hold of Hanuman ji’s tail, but Hanuman ji flew along with him. Mighty Hanuman ji then turned around and clashed with Ravan. The two powerful, well-matched warriors fought in the air, each striking the other in fury.
भावार्थ:
दोनों बहुत से छल-बल करते हुए आकाश में ऐसे शोभित हो रहे हैं मानो कज्जलगिरि और सुमेरु पर्वत लड़ रहे हों। जब बुद्धि और बल से राक्षस गिराए न गिरा तब मारुति श्री हनुमान्जी ने प्रभु को स्मरण किया॥4॥
English Translation:
They appeared glorious in the sky by putting forth all their strength and combat skills, fighting in the air as if a dark kohl mountain and the golden Sumeru mountain were contending with each other. When Hanuman ji was unsuccessful in overthrowing the demon using his might or intellect, the son of the Wind God invoked the Lord.
भावार्थ:
श्री रघुवीर का स्मरण करके धीर हनुमान्जी ने ललकारकर रावण को मारा। वे दोनों पृथ्वी पर गिरते और फिर उठकर लड़ते हैं, देवताओं ने दोनों की ‘जय-जय’ पुकारी। हनुमान्जी पर संकट देखकर वानर-भालू क्रोधातुर होकर दौड़े, किन्तु रण-मद-माते रावण ने सब योद्धाओं को अपनी प्रचण्ड भुजाओं के बल से कुचल और मसल डाला।
English Translation:
After meditating upon Lord Raghuveer, the composed Hanuman ji challenged and struck Ravan. The two fell to the ground and, rising again, resumed fighting. Watching them fight bravely, the Demigods exclaimed, “Glory, glory to both.” Seeing Hanuman ji in a troublesome situation, the monkeys and bears rushed forward in full rage. However, Ravan, mad with passion of war, crushed all the brave fighters with the strength of his mighty arms.
भावार्थ:
तब श्री रघुवीर के ललकारने पर प्रचण्ड वीर वानर दौड़े। वानरों के प्रबल दल को देखकर रावण ने माया प्रकट की॥95॥
English Translation:
Then, rallied by Shri Raghuveer, all the formidable monkey warriors rushed forward to fight with Ravan. Seeing a strong troop approaching, Ravan resorted to illusory tricks.
भावार्थ:
क्षणभर के लिए वह अदृश्य हो गया। फिर उस दुष्ट ने अनेकों रूप प्रकट किए। श्री रघुनाथजी की सेना में जितने रीछ-वानर थे, उतने ही रावण जहाँ-तहाँ (चारों ओर) प्रकट हो गए॥1॥
English Translation:
In an instant, the wretch made himself invisible and then reappeared with many phantoms of himself. The ten-headed Ravan multiplied to match the number of all the monkeys and bears in Lord Raghupati’s army.
भावार्थ:
वानरों ने अपरिमित रावण देखे। भालू और वानर सब जहाँ-तहाँ (इधर-उधर) भाग चले। वानर धीरज नहीं धरते। हे लक्ष्मणजी! हे रघुवीर! बचाइए, बचाइए, यों पुकारते हुए वे भागे जा रहे हैं॥2॥
English Translation:
When the monkeys saw infinite Ravans, they ran helter-skelter with the bears. Unable to compose themselves out of fear, they shouted, “Protect us, Shri Lakshman! Save us, Shri Raghuveer!”
भावार्थ:
दसों दिशाओं में करोड़ों रावण दौड़ते हैं और घोर, कठोर भयानक गर्जन कर रहे हैं। सब देवता डर गए और ऐसा कहते हुए भाग चले कि हे भाई! अब जय की आशा छोड़ दो!॥3॥
English Translation:
Millions of Ravans ran in every direction, roaring in loud, gruesome, and frightful voices. All the Demigods who were watching the battle from the sky started to flee in panic and exclaimed, “O’ Brothers, abandon any hope for victory…
भावार्थ:
एक ही रावण ने सब देवताओं को जीत लिया था, अब तो बहुत से रावण हो गए हैं। इससे अब पहाड़ की गुफाओं का आश्रय लो (अर्थात् उनमें छिप रहो)। वहाँ ब्रह्मा, शम्भु और ज्ञानी मुनि ही डटे रहे, जिन्होंने प्रभु की कुछ महिमा जानी थी॥4॥
English Translation:
One ten-headed Ravan had defeated all the Demigods, and now there are so many. Let’s find a cave in a mountain to hide from him.” Only Lord Brahma, Lord Shiv, wise sages, and those who knew the glory of the Lord in some way, remained at the scene.
भावार्थ:
जो प्रभु का प्रताप जानते थे, वे निर्भय डटे रहे। वानरों ने शत्रुओं (बहुत से रावणों) को सच्चा ही मान लिया। (इससे) सब वानर-भालू विचलित होकर ‘हे कृपालु! रक्षा कीजिए’ (यों पुकारते हुए) भय से व्याकुल होकर भाग चले। अत्यंत बलवान् रणबाँकुरे हनुमान्जी, अंगद, नील और नल लड़ते हैं और कपट रूपी भूमि से अंकुर की भाँति उपजे हुए कोटि-कोटि योद्धा रावणों को मसलते हैं।
English Translation:
Those who knew the Lord’s glory stayed there fearlessly, while the monkeys believed the phantoms of the enemy to be real. Afraid and in distress, all the monkeys and bears rushed to Shri Ram, shouting, “Save us, O’ Merciful Lord.” The most formidable warriors; Hanuman ji, Angad, Nal, and Neel, fought and crushed many phantoms of Ravan, which had sprouted from the ground of deception.
भावार्थ:
देवताओं और वानरों को विकल देखकर कोसलपति श्री रामजी हँसे और शार्गं धनुष पर एक बाण चढ़ाकर (माया के बने हुए) सब रावणों को मार डाला॥96॥
English Translation:
Seeing the Demigods and monkeys in distress, the Lord of the Koshal Kingdom laughed, fitted an arrow to His Sharang bow, and wiped out the entire host of Ravan’s phantoms.
भावार्थ:
प्रभु ने क्षणभर में सब माया काट डाली। जैसे सूर्य के उदय होते ही अंधकार की राशि फट जाती है (नष्ट हो जाती है)। अब एक ही रावण को देखकर देवता हर्षित हुए और उन्होंने लौटकर प्रभु पर बहुत से पुष्प बरसाए॥1॥
English Translation:
Within a fraction of a second, the Lord shattered the entire illusion, just as darkness is dispelled by the rising Sun. Seeing only one Ravan, the Demigods rejoiced. They turned back and showered flowers upon Shri Ram.
भावार्थ:
श्री रघुनाथजी ने भुजा उठाकर सब वानरों को लौटाया। तब वे एक-दूसरे को पुकार-पुकार कर लौट आए। प्रभु का बल पाकर रीछ-वानर दौड़ पड़े। जल्दी से कूदकर वे रणभूमि में आ गए॥2॥
English Translation:
Raising His arm, Lord Raghupati rallied the monkeys, who returned after calling out to one another. Inspired by the Lord’s might, the monkeys and bears sallied forward, leaping swiftly as they arrived on the battlefield.
भावार्थ:
देवताओं को श्री रामजी की स्तुति करते देख कर रावण ने सोचा, मैं इनकी समझ में एक हो गया, (परन्तु इन्हें यह पता नहीं कि इनके लिए मैं एक ही बहुत हूँ) और कहा- अरे मूर्खों! तुम तो सदा के ही मेरे मरैल (मेरी मार खाने वाले) हो। ऐसा कहकर वह क्रोध करके आकाश पर (देवताओं की ओर) दौड़ा॥3॥
English Translation:
When Ravan saw the Demigods praying to Shri Ram, he realized that he had been reduced to one. He exclaimed, “Fools, you have always been victims of my thrashing.” Saying this Ravan rushed forward into the sky to attack the Demigods.
भावार्थ:
देवता हाहाकार करते हुए भागे। (रावण ने कहा-) दुष्टों! मेरे आगे से कहाँ जा सकोगे? देवताओं को व्याकुल देखकर अंगद दौड़े और उछलकर रावण का पैर पकड़कर (उन्होंने) उसको पृथ्वी पर गिरा दिया॥4॥
English Translation:
The Demigods ran, making a loud lamentation. Ravan shouted, “Fools, where will you run from me?” Seeing the Demigods in distress, Angad sallied forward, leaped, and clasped Ravan’s foot, bringing him down to the ground.
भावार्थ:
उसे पकड़कर पृथ्वी पर गिराकर लात मारकर बालिपुत्र अंगद प्रभु के पास चले गए। रावण संभलकर उठा और बड़े भंयकर कठोर शब्द से गरजने लगा। वह दर्प करके दसों धनुष चढ़ाकर उन पर बहुत से बाण संधान करके बरसाने लगा। उसने सब योद्धाओं को घायल और भय से व्याकुल कर दिया और अपना बल देखकर वह हर्षित होने लगा।
English Translation:
After seizing Ravan and throwing him to the ground, the son of Bali, Angad, kicked him and then went to Shri Ram. Recovering himself, the ten-headed Ravan rose again and roared terribly in a shrill voice. In his false pride, he furiously drew ten bows and discharged innumerable arrows, wounding and creating terror and worry in the hearts of the brave monkey army. Seeing his own prowess, Ravan felt delighted in his heart.
भावार्थ:
तब श्री रघुनाथजी ने रावण के सिर, भुजाएँ, बाण और धनुष काट डाले। पर वे फिर बहुत बढ़ गए, जैसे तीर्थ में किए हुए पाप बढ़ जाते हैं (कई गुना अधिक भयानक फल उत्पन्न करते हैं)!॥97॥
English Translation:
Shri Raghupati then severed Ravan’s heads, arms, bows and arrows multiple times. Yet, each time they instantly multiplied manyfold, much like sins multiply when committed in a holy place.
भावार्थ:
शत्रु के सिर और भुजाओं की बढ़ती देखकर रीछ-वानरों को बहुत ही क्रोध हुआ। यह मूर्ख भुजाओं के और सिरों के कटने पर भी नहीं मरता, (ऐसा कहते हुए) भालू और वानर योद्धा क्रोध करके दौड़े॥1॥
English Translation:
Seeing the enemy’s heads and arms multiply, the monkeys and bears grew extremely furious. Exclaiming, “The fool is not dying even though his arms and heads are cut off,” the monkey and bear warriors charged towards him in great fury.
भावार्थ:
बालिपुत्र अंगद, मारुति हनुमान्जी, नल, नील, वानरराज सुग्रीव और द्विविद आदि बलवान् उस पर वृक्ष और पर्वतों का प्रहार करते हैं। वह उन्हीं पर्वतों और वृक्षों को पकड़कर वानरों को मारता है॥2॥
English Translation:
Repository of immense strength, the son of Bali (Angad), the son of the Wind God (Hanuman ji), Nal, Neel, the King of Monkeys (Sugriv), and Dvivid, holding trees and huge mountains, hurled them at Ravan. Ravan caught them and threw the same back at the monkeys.
भावार्थ:
कोई एक वानर नखों से शत्रु के शरीर को फाड़कर भाग जाते हैं, तो कोई उसे लातों से मारकर। तब नल और नील रावण के सिरों पर चढ़ गए और नखों से उसके ललाट को फाड़ने लगे॥3॥
English Translation:
One of the monkeys tore off Ravan’s skin with his claws, while another monkey kicked him and ran away. Meanwhile, Nal and Neel climbed up on Ravan’s heads and, with their claws, started tearing off his foreheads.
भावार्थ:
खून देखकर उसे हृदय में बड़ा दुःख हुआ। उसने उनको पकड़ने के लिए हाथ फैलाए, पर वे पकड़ में नहीं आते, हाथों के ऊपर-ऊपर ही फिरते हैं मानो दो भौंरे कमलों के वन में विचरण कर रहे हों॥4॥
English Translation:
Seeing blood gushing from his body, Ravan was greatly distressed in his heart. In an attempt to seize them, he spread out his arms. Nal and Neel, however, evaded his grasp, leaping from one arm to another like a pair of bees hovering over a forest of lotuses.
भावार्थ:
तब उसने क्रोध करके उछलकर दोनों को पकड़ लिया। पृथ्वी पर पटकते समय वे उसकी भुजाओं को मरोड़कर भाग छूटे। फिर उसने क्रोध करके हाथों में दसों धनुष लिए और वानरों को बाणों से मारकर घायल कर दिया॥5॥
English Translation:
Finally, in a furious move, Ravan leapt and caught them both. However, just as he was about to dash them to the ground, they twisted his arm and ran away. Once more, Ravan, in a fit of fury, took up his bows and wounded the monkeys by striking them with arrows.
भावार्थ:
हनुमान्जी आदि सब वानरों को मूर्च्छित करके और संध्या का समय पाकर रावण हर्षित हुआ। समस्त वानर-वीरों को मूर्च्छित देखकर रणधीर जाम्बवत् दौड़े॥6॥
English Translation:
After rendering Hanuman ji and the other monkeys unconscious and seeing the arrival of dusk, Ravan rejoiced. Observing all the brave monkeys unconscious, the stalwart in battle, Jambvant, rushed forward.
भावार्थ:
जाम्बवान् के साथ जो भालू थे, वे पर्वत और वृक्ष धारण किए रावण को ललकार-ललकार कर मारने लगे। बलवान् रावण क्रोधित हुआ और पैर पकड़-पकड़कर वह अनेकों योद्धाओं को पृथ्वी पर पटकने लगा॥7॥
English Translation:
The bears who accompanied Jambvant held mountains and trees in their hands and began hurling them at Ravan, challenging him for combat again and again. Enraged, the mighty Ravan seized many brave fighters by their legs and smashed them to the ground.
भावार्थ:
जाम्बवान् ने अपने दल का विध्वंस देखकर क्रोध करके रावण की छाती में लात मारी॥8॥
English Translation:
When the King of the Bears saw his battalion being wiped out, he was filled with rage and hurled a powerful kick to the centre of Ravan’s chest.
