भावार्थ:
भूत, पिशाच और बेताल, बड़े-बड़े झोंटों वाले महान् भयंकर झोटिंग और प्रमथ (शिवगण) उस नदी में स्नान करते हैं। कौए और चील भुजाएँ लेकर उड़ते हैं और एक-दूसरे से छीनकर खा जाते हैं॥1॥
English Translation:
In the bloody river, ghosts, demons, goblins, and the fearsome, long-haired, massive attendants of Lord Shiv plunged. Crows and eagles flew above, carrying the arms of fallen warriors in their beaks, snatching, tearing, and eating from one another.
भावार्थ:
एक (कोई) कहते हैं, अरे मूर्खों! ऐसी सस्ती (बहुतायत) है, फिर भी तुम्हारी दरिद्रता नहीं जाती? घायल योद्धा तट पर पड़े कराह रहे हैं, मानो जहाँ-तहाँ अर्धजल (वे व्यक्ति जो मरने के समय आधे जल में रखे जाते हैं) पड़े हों॥2॥
English Translation:
Some lamented, “What a pity, fools, that you continue to suffer from want even amidst such plenty?” The wounded brave fighters, fallen on the banks, groaned like the dying, lying all around, half in and half out of the water.
भावार्थ:
गीध आँतें खींच रहे हैं, मानो मछली मार नदी तट पर से चित्त लगाए हुए (ध्यानस्थ होकर) बंसी खेल रहे हों (बंसी से मछली पकड़ रहे हों)। बहुत से योद्धा बहे जा रहे हैं और पक्षी उन पर चढ़े चले जा रहे हैं। मानो वे नदी में नावरि (नौका क्रीड़ा) खेल रहे हों॥3॥
English Translation:
The vultures pulled out the intestines of the dead, resembling fishermen holding their fishing rods with full attention. Many dead warriors floated in the river of blood, with birds perched on top of them, as if they were enjoying a game of rowing boats on the river.
भावार्थ:
योगिनियाँ खप्परों में भर-भरकर खून जमा कर रही हैं। भूत-पिशाचों की स्त्रियाँ आकाश में नाच रही हैं। चामुण्डाएँ योद्धाओं की खोपड़ियों का करताल बजा रही हैं और नाना प्रकार से गा रही हैं॥4॥
English Translation:
The yoginis (female attendants of Goddess Durga with yogic powers) filled and stored the skulls with blood. The witches and demonesses danced in the sky. Clashing the skulls of dead warriors like pairs of cymbals, the Chamundas (female attendants of Goddess Durga with yogic powers) sang in various ways.
भावार्थ:
गीदड़ों के समूह कट-कट शब्द करते हुए मुरदों को काटते, खाते, हुआँ-हुआँ करते और पेट भर जाने पर एक-दूसरे को डाँटते हैं। करोड़ों धड़ बिना सिर के घूम रहे हैं और सिर पृथ्वी पर पड़े जय-जय बोल रहे है॥5॥
English Translation:
Herds of jackals, gnashing their teeth, bit into the corpses and feasted on them. Their cries echoed, and when they were satiated, they growled. Millions of headless bodies trotted across the battlefield, while the heads lying on the ground shouted, “Victory, victory.”
भावार्थ:
मुण्ड (कटे सिर) जय-जय बोल बोलते हैं और प्रचण्ड रुण्ड (धड़) बिना सिर के दौड़ते हैं। पक्षी खोपड़ियों में उलझ-उलझकर परस्पर लड़े मरते हैं, उत्तम योद्धा दूसरे योद्धाओं को ढहा रहे हैं। श्री रामचंद्रजी बल से दर्पित हुए वानर राक्षसों के झुंडों को मसले डालते हैं। श्री रामजी के बाण समूहों से मरे हुए योद्धा लड़ाई के मैदान में सो रहे हैं।
English Translation:
The heads shouted, “Victory, victory,” while the fearful headless bodies ran helter-skelter across the battlefield. Birds got entangled in the skulls as they contended with one another. The brave warriors overthrew their rivals. The monkeys, boasting of the might of Lord Ram, crushed hosts of demon troops. Warriors struck by the volleys of arrows from Shri Ram lay dead on the battlefield.
भावार्थ:
रावण ने हृदय में विचारा कि राक्षसों का नाश हो गया है। मैं अकेला हूँ और वानर-भालू बहुत हैं, इसलिए मैं अब अपार माया रचूँ॥88॥
English Translation:
Ravan thought to himself, “My demons have been wiped out, and I am left alone, while the monkeys and bears are still in large numbers. Let me resort to infinite illusory tricks.”
भावार्थ:
देवताओं ने प्रभु को पैदल (बिना सवारी के युद्ध करते) देखा, तो उनके हृदय में बड़ा भारी क्षोभ (दुःख) उत्पन्न हुआ। (फिर क्या था) इंद्र ने तुरंत अपना रथ भेज दिया। (उसका सारथी) मातलि हर्ष के साथ उसे ले आया॥1॥
English Translation:
When the Demigods saw the Lord barefoot, they were deeply troubled in their hearts. Indra, the Lord of the Demigods, quickly dispatched his own chariot, which his charioteer, Matali, joyfully brought to Shri Ram.
भावार्थ:
उस दिव्य अनुपम और तेज के पुंज (तेजोमय) रथ पर कोसलपुरी के राजा श्री रामचंद्रजी हर्षित होकर चढ़े। उसमें चार चंचल, मनोहर, अजर, अमर और मन की गति के समान शीघ्र चलने वाले (देवलोक के) घोड़े जुते थे॥2॥
English Translation:
The divine chariot was unique and a repository of splendour. The King of the Koshal Kingdom, Shri Ram, joyfully mounted it. The chariot was driven by four fast-moving, horses who were playful, charming, invincible, immortal, and flew as swiftly as the thoughts of the mind.
भावार्थ:
श्री रघुनाथजी को रथ पर चढ़े देखकर वानर विशेष बल पाकर दौड़े। वानरों की मार सही नहीं जाती। तब रावण ने माया फैलाई॥3॥
English Translation:
Seeing Shri Raghunath mounted atop the chariot, the monkeys rushed forward with renewed vigour. Unable to tolerate the onslaught of the monkeys, Ravan expanded his illusory powers.
भावार्थ:
एक श्री रघुवीर के ही वह माया नहीं लगी। सब वानरों ने और लक्ष्मणजी ने भी उस माया को सच मान लिया। वानरों ने राक्षसी सेना में भाई लक्ष्मणजी सहित बहुत से रामों को देखा॥4॥
English Translation:
But that illusory energy did not affect Shri Raghuveer. However, Shri Lakshman and the entire monkey army believed it to be real. The monkeys saw numerous Lords of the Koshal Kingdom, Shri Ram, along with His younger brother, Shri Lakshman, among the demon army.
भावार्थ:
बहुत से राम-लक्ष्मण देखकर वानर-भालू मन में मिथ्या डर से बहुत ही डर गए। लक्ष्मणजी सहित वे मानो चित्र लिखे से जहाँ के तहाँ खड़े देखने लगे। अपनी सेना को आश्चर्यचकित देखकर कोसलपति भगवान् हरि (दुःखों के हरने वाले श्री रामजी) ने हँसकर धनुष पर बाण चढ़ाकर, पल भर में सारी माया हर ली। वानरों की सारी सेना हर्षित हो गई।
English Translation:
When the monkeys and bears saw numerous Shri Rams and Shri Lakshmans among the demon army, they were terrified at heart. They stood in awe like figures in a painting, alongside Shri Lakshman, wherever they were. Seeing His army astounded, Shri Ram laughed. The Lord of Koshal then fitted an arrow to His bow, and within a fraction of a second, Lord Hari dispelled the illusion of Maya, to the delight of the entire monkey army.
भावार्थ:
फिर श्री रामजी सबकी ओर देखकर गंभीर वचन बोले- हे वीरों! तुम सब बहुत ही थक गए हो, इसलिए अब (मेरा और रावण का) द्वंद्व युद्ध देखो॥89॥
English Translation:
Then Shri Ram, after glancing at everyone, spoke in a serious tone, “O’ Brave soldiers, you all are very tired. Now watch me fight one-on one with Ravan.”
भावार्थ:
ऐसा कहकर श्री रघुनाथजी ने ब्राह्मणों के चरणकमलों में सिर नवाया और फिर रथ चलाया। तब रावण के हृदय में क्रोध छा गया और वह गरजता तथा ललकारता हुआ सामने दौड़ा॥1॥
English Translation:
Saying these words, Lord Ram bowed His head in reverence to the Brahmins in His heart and proceeded forward in His chariot. The King of Lanka – Ravan, filled with fury, rushed to meet Shri Ram face to face, roaring and challenging Him.
भावार्थ:
(उसने कहा-) अरे तपस्वी! सुनो, तुमने युद्ध में जिन योद्धाओं को जीता है, मैं उनके समान नहीं हूँ। मेरा नाम रावण है, मेरा यश सारा जगत् जानता है, लोकपाल तक जिसके कैद खाने में पड़े हैं॥2॥
English Translation:
Ravan said, “Listen, O’ Hermit, I am not like the brave fighters you have vanquished in battle until now. I am Ravan. The entire world knows my glory, and my prison holds even the guardians of the various regions of the Universe…
भावार्थ:
तुमने खर, दूषण और विराध को मारा! बेचारे बालि का व्याध की तरह वध किया। बड़े-बड़े राक्षस योद्धाओं के समूह का संहार किया और कुंभकर्ण तथा मेघनाद को भी मारा॥3॥
English Translation:
You killed Khar, Dushan, and Viradh. And like a hunter, you slew the poor Bali. You have killed hosts of powerful demon warriors, as well as Kumbhkaran and Meghnad…
भावार्थ:
अरे राजा! यदि तुम रण से भाग न गए तो आज मैं (वह) सारा वैर निकाल लूँगा। आज मैं तुम्हें निश्चय ही काल के हवाले कर दूँगा। तुम कठिन रावण के पाले पड़े हो॥4॥
English Translation:
…O’ Prince, today I will fulfill my revenge for all of them unless you flee from the battlefield. O’ Fool, today I will surely hand you over to the God of Death, for you have encountered the formidable Ravan.”
भावार्थ:
रावण के दुर्वचन सुनकर और उसे कालवश जान कृपानिधान श्री रामजी ने हँसकर यह वचन कहा- तुम्हारी सारी प्रभुता, जैसा तुम कहते हो, बिल्कुल सच है। पर अब व्यर्थ बकवाद न करो, अपना पुरुषार्थ दिखलाओ॥5॥
English Translation:
Hearing Ravan’s foul words and knowing that he was under the influence of his impending death, the ocean of mercy, Shri Ram, laughed and said, “True, true are your words about your glory. Now stop blabbering and show me your valour…
भावार्थ:
व्यर्थ बकवाद करके अपने सुंदर यश का नाश न करो। क्षमा करना, तुम्हें नीति सुनाता हूँ, सुनो! संसार में तीन प्रकार के पुरुष होते हैं- पाटल (गुलाब), आम और कटहल के समान। एक (पाटल) फूल देते हैं, एक (आम) फूल और फल दोनों देते हैं एक (कटहल) में केवल फल ही लगते हैं। इसी प्रकार (पुरुषों में) एक कहते हैं (करते नहीं), दूसरे कहते और करते भी हैं और एक (तीसरे) केवल करते हैं, पर वाणी से कहते नहीं॥
English Translation:
…By boasting and blabbering worthlessly, do not ruin your great reputation. Pardon me, and listen to the rules of conduct: in the world, there are three types of men—those resembling a rose, a mango, and a jackfruit, respectively. The rose gives flowers alone, the mango gives both flowers and fruit, and the jackfruit yields fruit alone. Similarly, the first type of men only talk, the second both talk and act, while the third only act but never go about proclaiming it.”
भावार्थ:
श्री रामजी के वचन सुनकर वह खूब हँसा (और बोला-) मुझे ज्ञान सिखाते हो? उस समय वैर करते तो नहीं डरे, अब प्राण प्यारे लग रहे हैं॥90॥
English Translation:
Upon hearing Shri Ram’s words, Ravan burst into laughter and remarked, “You are teaching me wisdom. You showed no fear when starting enmity with me, and now You hold Your life dear.”
भावार्थ:
दुर्वचन कहकर रावण क्रुद्ध होकर वज्र के समान बाण छोड़ने लगा। अनेकों आकार के बाण दौड़े और दिशा, विदिशा तथा आकाश और पृथ्वी में, सब जगह छा गए॥1॥
English Translation:
After hurling harsh and taunting words, Ravan, in fury, started to discharge arrows like thunderbolts at Shri Ram. Various types of fierce arrows flew in all the ten directions, including the mid-point, and everywhere covering the entire area of the ground and the sky.
भावार्थ:
श्री रघुवीर ने अग्निबाण छोड़ा, (जिससे) रावण के सब बाण क्षणभर में भस्म हो गए। तब उसने खिसियाकर तीक्ष्ण शक्ति छोड़ी, (किन्तु) श्री रामचंद्रजी ने उसको बाण के साथ वापस भेज दिया॥2॥
English Translation:
Shri Raghuveer responded with arrows invoked by the fire deity, and within seconds, all the arrows of the demon king were destroyed. Frustrated, Ravan then discharged the Shakti spear at the Lord. Shri Ram’s arrow swiftly turned it back towards Ravan.
भावार्थ:
वह करोड़ों चक्र और त्रिशूल चलाता है, परन्तु प्रभु उन्हें बिना ही परिश्रम काटकर हटा देते हैं। रावण के बाण किस प्रकार निष्फल होते हैं, जैसे दुष्ट मनुष्य के सब मनोरथ!॥3॥
English Translation:
Ravan hurled millions of discs and tridents, but Shri Ram effortlessly cut them off, stopping them from advancing. Ravan’s arrows became futile, just like all the desires of the heart of a sinful person end up in vain.
भावार्थ:
तब उसने श्री रामजी के सारथी को सौ बाण मारे। वह श्री रामजी की जय पुकारकर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा। श्री रामजी ने कृपा करके सारथी को उठाया। तब प्रभु अत्यंत क्रोध को प्राप्त हुए॥4॥
English Translation:
Ravan then struck Lord Ram’s charioteer, Matali, with one hundred arrows. The charioteer fell to the ground, crying, “Victory to Shri Ram.” Lord Ram, filled with compassion, lifted him up. Then, Lord Ram was filled with extreme fury.
भावार्थ:
युद्ध में शत्रु के विरुद्ध श्री रघुनाथजी क्रोधित हुए, तब तरकस में बाण कसमसाने लगे (बाहर निकलने को आतुर होने लगे)। उनके धनुष का अत्यंत प्रचण्ड शब्द (टंकार) सुनकर मनुष्यभक्षी सब राक्षस वातग्रस्त हो गए (अत्यंत भयभीत हो गए)। मंदोदरी का हृदय काँप उठा, समुद्र, कच्छप, पृथ्वी और पर्वत डर गए। दिशाओं के हाथी पृथ्वी को दाँतों से पकड़कर चिग्घाड़ने लगे। यह कौतुक देखकर देवता हँसे।
English Translation:
When Lord Ram became furious against His enemy on the battlefield, the arrows in His quiver quivered with excitement, eager to be released. Shri Ram twanged His bow, and the terrible sound struck fear among the man-eating demons, leaving them breathless. Mandodari’s heart trembled with fear, as did the mighty tortoise on whose back the cosmos rests, along with the Ocean, Earth, and the Mountains. The elephants holding the ten directions of the cosmos trumpeted, clutching the Earth with their tusks. The Demigods watching the scene from the skies, laughed.
भावार्थ:
धनुष को कान तक तानकर श्री रामचंद्रजी ने भयानक बाण छोड़े। श्री रामजी के बाण समूह ऐसे चले मानो सर्प लहलहाते (लहराते) हुए जा रहे हों॥91॥
English Translation:
Shri Ram drew His bow-string to His ear and unleashed a volley of terrifying arrows, which sped through the sky, swaying like serpents.
भावार्थ:
बाण ऐसे चले मानो पंख वाले सर्प उड़ रहे हों। उन्होंने पहले सारथी और घोड़ों को मार डाला। फिर रथ को चूर-चूर करके ध्वजा और पताकाओं को गिरा दिया। तब रावण बड़े जोर से गरजा, पर भीतर से उसका बल थक गया था॥1॥
English Translation:
The arrows sallied forth like winged serpents. First, they killed Ravan’s charioteer and horses, then destroyed his chariot and tore off his ensign and flag. Ravan roared loudly, but internally his strength had abandoned him.
भावार्थ:
तुरंत दूसरे रथ पर चढ़कर खिसियाकर उसने नाना प्रकार के अस्त्र-शस्त्र छोड़े। उसके सब उद्योग वैसे ही निष्फल हो गए, जैसे परद्रोह में लगे हुए चित्त वाले मनुष्य के होते हैं॥2॥
English Translation:
Frustrated, he immediately mounted another chariot and hurled deadly weapons and missiles of various kinds at Shri Ram. All his efforts, however, failed like those of a man who is always engrossed with the intention of causing harm to others.
भावार्थ:
तब रावण ने दस त्रिशूल चलाए और श्री रामजी के चारों घोड़ों को मारकर पृथ्वी पर गिरा दिया। घोड़ों को उठाकर श्री रघुनाथजी ने क्रोध करके धनुष खींचकर बाण छोड़े॥3॥
English Translation:
Then Ravan hurled ten tridents, striking the four horses of Shri Ram’s chariot and overthrowing them onto the ground. Shri Raghunath raised the horses and, in fury, drew His bow-string and discharged many arrows.
भावार्थ:
रावण के सिर रूपी कमल वन में विचरण करने वाले श्री रघुवीर के बाण रूपी भ्रमरों की पंक्ति चली। श्री रामचंद्रजी ने उसके दसों सिरों में दस-दस बाण मारे, जो आर-पार हो गए और सिरों से रक्त के पनाले बह चले॥4॥
English Translation:
The volleys of arrows from Shri Raghuveer sallied forth like swarms of bees to roam in the forest of Ravan’s many heads, each compared to a lotus. Shri Ram struck ten arrows into each of Ravan’s ten heads. The arrows pierced through, and blood gushed forth in torrents.
भावार्थ:
रुधिर बहते हुए ही बलवान् रावण दौड़ा। प्रभु ने फिर धनुष पर बाण संधान किया। श्री रघुवीर ने तीस बाण मारे और बीसों भुजाओं समेत दसों सिर काटकर पृथ्वी पर गिरा दिए॥5॥
English Translation:
Despite his wounds and bleeding profusely, Ravan surged forward. The Lord then took aim and released thirty arrows, severing his heads and arms, causing them to fall to the ground.
भावार्थ:
(सिर और हाथ) काटते ही फिर नए हो गए। श्री रामजी ने फिर भुजाओं और सिरों को काट गिराया। इस तरह प्रभु ने बहुत बार भुजाएँ और सिर काटे, परन्तु काटते ही वे तुरंत फिर नए हो गए॥6॥
English Translation:
But the severed hands and heads quickly regenerated as soon as they were cut off. Shri Ram, however, struck off his heads and arms once more. Thereafter, multiple times, the Lord severed Ravan’s arms and heads, yet they renewed as soon as they were severed.
भावार्थ:
प्रभु बार-बार उसकी भुजा और सिरों को काट रहे हैं, क्योंकि कोसलपति श्री रामजी बड़े कौतुकी हैं। आकाश में सिर और बाहु ऐसे छा गए हैं, मानो असंख्य केतु और राहु हों॥7॥
English Translation:
The Lord of the Koshal Kingdom, Shri Ram, who is extremely playful, continued severing Ravan’s heads and arms. The sky became filled with them, resembling an endless swarm of Rahus and Ketus.
भावार्थ:
मानो अनेकों राहु और केतु रुधिर बहाते हुए आकाश मार्ग से दौड़ रहे हों। श्री रघुवीर के प्रचण्ड बाणों के (बार-बार) लगने से वे पृथ्वी पर गिरने नहीं पाते। एक-एक बाण से समूह के समूह सिर छिदे हुए आकाश में उड़ते ऐसे शोभा दे रहे हैं मानो सूर्य की किरणें क्रोध करके जहाँ-तहाँ राहुओं को पिरो रही हों।
English Translation:
It appeared as if innumerable Rahus and Ketus were rushing through the sky, streaming with blood. They did not fall to the ground when struck by the formidable arrows of Shri Raghuveer. Ravan’s multiple heads, which were flying in the air after being impaled by swarms of Lord’s arrows, shone gloriously as if angry beams of the Sun were stringing numerous Rahus.
भावार्थ:
जैसे-जैसे प्रभु उसके सिरों को काटते हैं, वैसे ही वैसे वे अपार होते जाते हैं। जैसे विषयों का सेवन करने से काम (उन्हें भोगने की इच्छा) दिन-प्रतिदिन नया-नया बढ़ता जाता है॥92॥
English Translation:
As soon as the Lord severed Ravan’s heads, they renewed in large numbers instantaneously, much like desires ever increasing with renewed interest when one indulges in the pleasures of the senses.
भावार्थ:
सिरों की बाढ़ देखकर रावण को अपना मरण भूल गया और बड़ा गहरा क्रोध हुआ। वह महान् अभिमानी मूर्ख गरजा और दसों धनुषों को तानकर दौड़ा॥1॥
English Translation:
When the ten-headed Ravan saw the multiplication of his heads, he forgot about his impending death, and his wrath intensified. The fool then roared in great pride and rushed forward with all ten of his bows drawn.
भावार्थ:
रणभूमि में रावण ने क्रोध किया और बाण बरसाकर श्री रघुनाथजी के रथ को ढँक दिया। एक दण्ड (घड़ी) तक रथ दिखलाई न पड़ा, मानो कुहरे में सूर्य छिप गया हो॥2॥
English Translation:
The ten-headed Ravan flew into a fit of fury on the battlefield, raining arrows on Shri Raghupati’s chariot and completely covering it. For twenty-four minutes, the chariot became invisible, as if the Sun was hidden by fog.
भावार्थ:
जब देवताओं ने हाहाकार किया, तब प्रभु ने क्रोध करके धनुष उठाया और शत्रु के बाणों को हटाकर उन्होंने शत्रु के सिर काटे और उनसे दिशा, विदिशा, आकाश और पृथ्वी सबको पाट दिया॥3॥
English Translation:
When the Demigods made a loud lamentation, the Lord took His bow in fury, rendering Ravan’s arrows ineffective. He then severed Ravan’s heads, which covered all the ten directions, including the midpoints, the sky (Heaven), and the ground (Earth).
भावार्थ:
काटे हुए सिर आकाश मार्ग से दौड़ते हैं और जय-जय की ध्वनि करके भय उत्पन्न करते हैं। ‘लक्ष्मण और वानरराज सुग्रीव कहाँ हैं? कोसलपति रघुवीर कहाँ हैं?’॥4॥
English Translation:
The severed heads flew through the sky, causing terror in the hearts of the monkeys, shouting, “Victory, victory! Where is Lakshman? Where is Sugriv, the King of monkeys? Where is Raghuveer, the King of the Koshal Kingdom?”
भावार्थ:
‘राम कहाँ हैं?’ यह कहकर सिरों के समूह दौड़े, उन्हें देखकर वानर भाग चले। तब धनुष सन्धान करके रघुकुलमणि श्री रामजी ने हँसकर बाणों से उन सिरों को भलीभाँति बेध डाला। हाथों में मुण्डों की मालाएँ लेकर बहुत सी कालिकाएँ झुंड की झुंड मिलकर इकट्ठी हुईं और वे रुधिर की नदी में स्नान करके चलीं। मानो संग्राम रूपी वटवृक्ष की पूजा करने जा रही हों।
English Translation:
Multitudes of heads sped through the air, shouting, “Where is Ram?” Seeing this, the monkeys ran in fear. The crown jewel of the Raghu clan, Shri Ram, laughed and skillfully pierced all the heads with his arrows. Many groups of female attendants of Goddess Kali took garlands of skulls in their hands and gathered in numerous batches. It seemed as if they were going together in groups, having bathed in the stream of blood, proceeding to pray at the banyan tree of the battlefield.
भावार्थ:
फिर रावण ने क्रोधित होकर प्रचण्ड शक्ति छोड़ी। वह विभीषण के सामने ऐसी चली जैसे काल (यमराज) का दण्ड हो॥93॥
English Translation:
Then the ten-headed Ravan, in his fury, discharged a formidable spear that flew straight toward Vibhishan, like the terrible rod of the God of Death.
