भावार्थ:
(लक्ष्मणजी ने पास जाकर कहा-) अरे दुष्ट! वानर भालुओं को क्या मार रहा है? मुझे देख, मैं तेरा काल हूँ। (रावण ने कहा-) अरे मेरे पुत्र के घातक! मैं तुझी को ढूँढ रहा था। आज तुझे मारकर (अपनी) छाती ठंडी करूँगा॥1॥
English Translation:
Lakshman ji said, “O’ Vile one, you are killing monkeys and bears. Look at me, I am your Death personified.” Ravan replied, “I have been searching for you only, the slayer of my son. Today, I will kill you and soothe my heart.”
भावार्थ:
ऐसा कहकर उसने प्रचण्ड बाण छोड़े। लक्ष्मणजी ने सबके सैकड़ों टुकड़े कर डाले। रावण ने करोड़ों अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाए। लक्ष्मणजी ने उनको तिल के बराबर करके काटकर हटा दिया॥2॥
English Translation:
Saying these words, Ravan discharged fierce arrows towards Lakshman ji, but Shri Lakshman cut all of them into hundreds of pieces. Ravan then hurled millions of missiles and other weapons at Lakshman ji, but he foiled them all by reducing them to particles as small as sesame seeds.
भावार्थ:
फिर अपने बाणों से (उस पर) प्रहार किया और (उसके) रथ को तोड़कर सारथी को मार डाला। (रावण के) दसों मस्तकों में सौ-सौ बाण मारे। वे सिरों में ऐसे पैठ गए मानो पहाड़ के शिखरों में सर्प प्रवेश कर रहे हों॥3॥
English Translation:
Lakshman ji once again assailed Ravan with his arrows, destroying Ravan’s chariot and slaying his charioteer. Lakshman ji hit Ravan’s ten heads with a hundred arrows in each head, as if serpents were boring their way into mountain peaks.
भावार्थ:
फिर सौ बाण उसकी छाती में मारे। वह पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा, उसे कुछ भी होश न रहा। फिर मूर्च्छा छूटने पर वह प्रबल रावण उठा और उसने वह शक्ति चलाई जो ब्रह्माजी ने उसे दी थी॥4॥
English Translation:
Again, Lakshman ji hit Ravan with a hundred arrows in his chest, causing him to fall unconscious to the ground. Upon regaining consciousness, the mighty Ravan discharged the formidable spear at Lakshman ji, a weapon gifted to him by Lord Brahma.
भावार्थ:
वह ब्रह्मा की दी हुई प्रचण्ड शक्ति लक्ष्मणजी की ठीक छाती में लगी। वीर लक्ष्मणजी व्याकुल होकर गिर पड़े। तब रावण उन्हें उठाने लगा, पर उसके अतुलित बल की महिमा यों ही रह गई, (व्यर्थ हो गई, वह उन्हें उठा न सका)। जिनके एक ही सिर पर ब्रह्मांड रूपी भवन धूल के एक कण के समान विराजता है, उन्हें मूर्ख रावण उठाना चाहता है! वह तीनों भुवनों के स्वामी लक्ष्मणजी को नहीं जानता।
English Translation:
The fierce Shakti spear that Brahma had bestowed upon Ravan struck Lord Anant (Lakshman ji) right in the chest, causing him to drop to the ground, in agony. The ten-headed Ravan tried to lift Lakshman ji to carry him off, but the glory of Ravan’s matchless strength proved ineffective against the one upon whose head the entire cosmos with its fourteen spheres rests like a particle of sand. The foolish Ravan did not recognize the Lord of the three spheres (Earth, Heaven, and the Subterranean region).
भावार्थ:
यह देखकर पवनपुत्र हनुमान्जी कठोर वचन बोलते हुए दौड़े। हनुमान्जी के आते ही रावण ने उन पर अत्यंत भयंकर घूँसे का प्रहार किया॥83॥
English Translation:
Seeing this, the son of the Wind God, Hanuman ji, rushed forward, uttering harsh words. As he approached, Ravan struck him with a terrible blow from his fist.
भावार्थ:
हनुमान्जी घुटने टेककर रह गए, पृथ्वी पर गिरे नहीं और फिर क्रोध से भरे हुए संभलकर उठे। हनुमान्जी ने रावण को एक घूँसा मारा। वह ऐसा गिर पड़ा जैसे वज्र की मार से पर्वत गिरा हो॥1॥
English Translation:
Hanuman ji knelt down, but did not fall to the ground. Recovering himself, he rose with full wrath and struck Ravan with a solid punch. Ravan fell to the ground as if lightning had struck a mountain.
भावार्थ:
मूर्च्छा भंग होने पर फिर वह जागा और हनुमान्जी के बड़े भारी बल को सराहने लगा। (हनुमान्जी ने कहा-) मेरे पौरुष को धिक्कार है, धिक्कार है और मुझे भी धिक्कार है, जो हे देवद्रोही! तू अब भी जीता रह गया॥2॥
English Translation:
Upon regaining consciousness, Ravan started praising Hanuman ji’s enormous strength. Hanuman ji said, “Shame on me, shame on my valour, that you are still alive, O’ Enemy of the Demigods.”
भावार्थ:
ऐसा कहकर और लक्ष्मणजी को उठाकर हनुमान्जी श्री रघुनाथजी के पास ले आए। यह देखकर रावण को आश्चर्य हुआ। श्री रघुवीर ने (लक्ष्मणजी से) कहा- हे भाई! हृदय में समझो, तुम काल के भी भक्षक और देवताओं के रक्षक हो॥3॥
English Translation:
Saying these words, Hanuman ji carried Lakshman ji to Shri Raghunath. The ten-headed Ravan was astonished at the sight of Hanuman ji lifting Shri Lakshman. Shri Raghuveer said to Lakshman ji, “O’ Brother, understand in your heart that you can even devour Death and that you are the protector of the Demigods.”
भावार्थ:
ये वचन सुनते ही कृपालु लक्ष्मणजी उठ बैठे। वह कराल शक्ति आकाश को चली गई। लक्ष्मणजी फिर धनुष-बाण लेकर दौड़े और बड़ी शीघ्रता से शत्रु के सामने आ पहुँचे॥4॥
English Translation:
Immediately on hearing Lord Ram’s words, benevolent Lakshman ji arose and sat up, while the deadly Shakti spear that had pierced Lakshman ji’s chest vanished into the sky. He again took up his bow and arrow and rushed to face the enemy.
भावार्थ:
फिर उन्होंने बड़ी ही शीघ्रता से रावण के रथ को चूर-चूर कर और सारथी को मारकर उसे (रावण को) व्याकुल कर दिया। सौ बाणों से उसका हृदय बेध दिया, जिससे रावण अत्यंत व्याकुल होकर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा। तब दूसरा सारथी उसे रथ में डालकर तुरंत ही लंका को ले गया। प्रताप के समूह श्री रघुवीर के भाई लक्ष्मणजी ने फिर आकर प्रभु के चरणों में प्रणाम किया।
English Translation:
After reaching the battlefield, Lakshman ji quickly destroyed Ravan’s chariot and struck down his charioteer, leaving Ravan restless and grief-stricken. He pierced a hundred arrows into Ravan’s chest, causing him to fall to the ground, much distressed. Another charioteer arrived and immediately took Ravan to Lanka. The mine of glory, Lakshman ji, the Brother of Shri Raghuveer, returned and once again bowed at the Lord’s feet.
भावार्थ:
वहाँ (लंका में) रावण मूर्छा से जागकर कुछ यज्ञ करने लगा। वह मूर्ख और अत्यंत अज्ञानी हठवश श्री रघुनाथजी से विरोध करके विजय चाहता है॥84॥
English Translation:
At the other end in Lanka, upon regaining consciousness, Ravan began a sacrificial ritual. The fool, blinded by false pride, hoped for victory even by opposing Shri Ram.
भावार्थ:
यहाँ विभीषणजी ने सब खबर पाई और तुरंत जाकर श्री रघुनाथजी को कह सुनाई कि हे नाथ! रावण एक यज्ञ कर रहा है। उसके सिद्ध होने पर वह अभागा सहज ही नहीं मरेगा॥1॥
English Translation:
At this end, Vibhishan came to know about Ravan’s plan. He quickly went and told Shri Raghupati, “O’ Lord, Ravan is planning to perform a sacrifice, and if he completes it, the wretch will become invincible…
भावार्थ:
हे नाथ! तुरंत वानर योद्धाओं को भेजिए, जो यज्ञ का विध्वंस करें, जिससे रावण युद्ध में आवे। प्रातःकाल होते ही प्रभु ने वीर योद्धाओं को भेजा। हनुमान् और अंगद आदि सब (प्रधान वीर) दौड़े॥2॥
English Translation:
…So therefore, O’ Lord, immediately send the monkey warriors to destroy Ravan’s sacrifice. This will compel the ten-headed Ravan to return and fight on the battlefield.” As soon as day broke, Lord Ram sent the monkey fighters. Hanuman ji, Angad, and all the others rushed forward.
भावार्थ:
वानर खेल से ही कूदकर लंका पर जा चढ़े और निर्भय होकर रावण के महल में जा घुसे। ज्यों ही उसको यज्ञ करते देखा, त्यों ही सब वानरों को बहुत क्रोध हुआ॥3॥
English Translation:
In a mere sport, the monkeys leaped over the fort of Lanka and fearlessly entered Ravan’s palace. The moment they saw Ravan performing the sacrifice, they all grew wildly furious.
भावार्थ:
(उन्होंने कहा-) अरे ओ निर्लज्ज! रणभूमि से घर भाग आया और यहाँ आकर बगुले का सा ध्यान लगाकर बैठा है? ऐसा कहकर अंगद ने लात मारी। पर उसने इनकी ओर देखा भी नहीं, उस दुष्ट का मन स्वार्थ में अनुरक्त था॥4॥
English Translation:
“O’ Shameless one, you have fled the battlefield and are now sitting in your home, pretending to meditate like a stork trying to catch fish.” Saying these words, Angad hurled a kick, but the fool did not look at them. His heart was deeply absorbed in the selfish pursuit of completing the sacrifice.
भावार्थ:
जब उसने नहीं देखा, तब वानर क्रोध करके उसे दाँतों से पकड़कर (काटने और) लातों से मारने लगे। स्त्रियों को बाल पकड़कर घर से बाहर घसीट लाए, वे अत्यंत ही दीन होकर पुकारने लगीं। तब रावण काल के समान क्रोधित होकर उठा और वानरों को पैर पकड़कर पटकने लगा। इसी बीच में वानरों ने यज्ञ विध्वंस कर डाला, यह देखकर वह मन में हारने लगा। (निराश होने लगा)।
English Translation:
When Ravan ignored the monkey warriors, they, in their fury, hurled kicks at him and bit him with their teeth. The monkeys dragged the palace women out by their hair, while the women cried most piteously. At last, Ravan rose up in a rage, resembling the God of Death. He grabbed the monkeys by their feet and started throwing them away. Meanwhile, the monkeys had already wrecked his sacrifice. Seeing this, Ravan felt heartbroken and defeated in his heart.
भावार्थ:
यज्ञ विध्वंस करके सब चतुर वानर रघुनाथजी के पास आ गए। तब रावण जीने की आश छोड़कर क्रोधित होकर चला॥85॥
English Translation:
After wrecking Ravan’s sacrifice, the monkey warriors returned to Shri Raghupati. Frustrated and filled with fury, Ravan, abandoning all hope for his life, charged forward to fight on the battlefield.
भावार्थ:
चलते समय अत्यंत भयंकर अमंगल (अपशकुन) होने लगे। गीध उड़-उड़कर उसके सिरों पर बैठने लगे, किन्तु वह काल के वश था, इससे किसी भी अपशकुन को नहीं मानता था। उसने कहा- युद्ध का डंका बजाओ॥1॥
English Translation:
Many terrible omens occurred on his way; vultures flew and perched on his many heads. Under the influence of impending death, Ravan paid no heed to the signs. He ordered his army to beat the drums of war.
भावार्थ:
निशाचरों की अपार सेना चली। उसमें बहुत से हाथी, रथ, घुड़सवार और पैदल हैं। वे दुष्ट प्रभु के सामने कैसे दौड़े, जैसे पतंगों के समूह अग्नि की ओर (जलने के लिए) दौड़ते हैं॥2॥
English Translation:
An immense army of demons advanced, accompanied by countless elephants, chariots, foot soldiers, and cavalry. The vile demons charged at Lord Ram like a swarm of moths drawn to a blazing fire.
भावार्थ:
इधर देवताओं ने स्तुति की कि हे श्री रामजी! इसने हमको दारुण दुःख दिए हैं। अब आप इसे (अधिक) न खेलाइए। जानकीजी बहुत ही दुःखी हो रही हैं॥3॥
English Translation:
At this end, the Demigods offered prayers to Lord Ram, saying, “Ravan has inflicted terrible suffering upon us. Now, Shri Ram, do not sport any longer with him, for Sita ji is also in extreme agony.”
भावार्थ:
देवताओं के वचन सुनकर प्रभु मुस्कुराए। फिर श्री रघुवीर ने उठकर बाण सुधारे। मस्तक पर जटाओं के जूड़े को कसकर बाँधे हुए हैं, उसके बीच-बीच में पुष्प गूँथे हुए शोभित हो रहे हैं॥4॥
English Translation:
Hearing the humble supplication of the Demigods, Lord Ram smiled and arose, caressing his arrow. The locks of His hair are firmly tied up in a bun adorning His head, with beads of flowers interwoven, making them look glorious.
भावार्थ:
लाल नेत्र और मेघ के समान श्याम शरीर वाले और संपूर्ण लोकों के नेत्रों को आनंद देने वाले हैं। प्रभु ने कमर में फेंटा तथा तरकस कस लिया और हाथ में कठोर शार्गं धनुष ले लिया॥5॥
English Translation:
Lord Ram has lovely reddish eyes and a bluish complexion like rain clouds, delighting the eyes of the entire universe. He fastened His quiver to the cloth around His waist and took His formidable bow, Sharang, in His hand.
भावार्थ:
प्रभु ने हाथ में शार्गं धनुष लेकर कमर में बाणों की खान (अक्षय) सुंदर तरकस कस लिया। उनके भुजदण्ड पुष्ट हैं और मनोहर चौड़ी छाती पर ब्राह्मण (भृगुजी) के चरण का चिह्न शोभित है। तुलसीदासजी कहते हैं, ज्यों ही प्रभु धनुष-बाण हाथ में लेकर फिराने लगे, त्यों ही ब्रह्माण्ड, दिशाओं के हाथी, कच्छप, शेषजी, पृथ्वी, समुद्र और पर्वत सभी डगमगा उठे।
English Translation:
Lord Ram is adorned with his Sharang bow and a beautiful quiver filled with an inexhaustible stock of arrows, tightly fastened to His waist. He has strong muscular arms and a charming, broad chest adorned with the footprint of the Brahmin Sage Bhrigu. Tulsidas ji narrates that when the Lord began to caress His bow and arrow with His hands, the entire cosmos, along with the elephants guarding the ten directions, the divine Tortoise, the Serpent God Sheshnag on whom the cosmos rests, the Earth, and all its oceans and mountains, began to tremble.
भावार्थ:
(भगवान् की) शोभा देखकर देवता हर्षित होकर फूलों की अपार वर्षा करने लगे और शोभा, शक्ति और गुणों के धाम करुणानिधान प्रभु की जय हो, जय हो, जय हो (ऐसा पुकारने लगे)॥86॥
English Translation:
Seeing the Lord’s beauty, the Demigods rejoiced and showered innumerable flowers, exclaiming, “Glory, glory, glory to the ocean of mercy and the mine of beauty, strength, and virtues.”
भावार्थ:
इसी बीच में निशाचरों की अत्यंत घनी सेना कसमसाती हुई (आपस में टकराती हुई) आई। उसे देखकर वानर योद्धा इस प्रकार (उसके) सामने चले जैसे प्रलयकाल के बादलों के समूह हों॥1॥
English Translation:
Meanwhile, the extremely agitated demon army arrived in massive numbers. Seeing them, the brave monkey fighters advanced to confront them head-on, like a cluster of clouds at the time of universal dissolution.
भावार्थ:
बहुत से कृपाल और तलवारें चमक रही हैं। मानो दसों दिशाओं में बिजलियाँ चमक रही हों। हाथी, रथ और घोड़ों का कठोर चिंग्घाड़ ऐसा लगता है मानो बादल भयंकर गर्जन कर रहे हों॥2॥
English Translation:
Many scimitars and swords shone like gleaming lightning in all the ten directions. The shrill cries of the elephants and horses, along with the rattling of the chariots, resembled the terrible thundering of clouds.
भावार्थ:
वानरों की बहुत सी पूँछें आकाश में छाई हुई हैं। (वे ऐसी शोभा दे रही हैं) मानो सुंदर इंद्रधनुष उदय हुए हों। धूल ऐसी उठ रही है मानो जल की धारा हो। बाण रूपी बूँदों की अपार वृष्टि हुई॥3॥
English Translation:
So many monkeys filled the sky with their tails, resembling the appearance of numerous beautiful rainbows. The dust rose in thick columns like streams of water in the air, and arrows rained down in an endless shower like raindrops.
भावार्थ:
दोनों ओर से योद्धा पर्वतों का प्रहार करते हैं। मानो बारंबार वज्रपात हो रहा हो। श्री रघुनाथजी ने क्रोध करके बाणों की झड़ी लगा दी, (जिससे) राक्षसों की सेना घायल हो गई॥4॥
English Translation:
The fighters from both sides hurled mountains at each other as if thunder and lightning were striking continuously. Shri Raghupati, in His fury, unleashed a continuous stream of arrows that injured hosts of demons.
भावार्थ:
बाण लगते ही वीर चीत्कार कर उठते हैं और चक्कर खा-खाकर जहाँ-तहाँ पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ते हैं। उनके शरीर से ऐसे खून बह रहा है मानो पर्वत के भारी झरनों से जल बह रहा हो। इस प्रकार डरपोकों को भय उत्पन्न करने वाली रुधिर की नदी बह चली॥5॥
English Translation:
The brave soldiers screamed in pain as arrows struck them, whirling around before falling to the ground. Streaming with blood, the wounded demons resembled mountains with large waterfalls, their blood flowing like rivers, causing fear among the cowards.
भावार्थ:
डरपोकों को भय उपजाने वाली अत्यंत अपवित्र रक्त की नदी बह चली। दोनों दल उसके दोनों किनारे हैं। रथ रेत है और पहिए भँवर हैं। वह नदी बहुत भयावनी बह रही है। हाथी, पैदल, घोड़े, गदहे तथा अनेकों सवारियाँ ही, जिनकी गिनती कौन करे, नदी के जल जन्तु हैं। बाण, शक्ति और तोमर सर्प हैं, धनुष तरंगें हैं और ढाल बहुत से कछुवे हैं।
English Translation:
An extremely inauspicious and terrible river of blood flowed across the battlefield, with the two banks represented by opposing armies. The chariots formed the sand, while their wheels represented the whirlpools, making it a truly frightful deluge. Elephants, foot soldiers, horses, donkeys, and various vehicles resembled different aquatic creatures. Arrows, spears, and lances were like serpents, bows formed the waves, and shields resembled tortoises in this dreadful river.
भावार्थ:
वीर पृथ्वी पर इस तरह गिर रहे हैं, मानो नदी-किनारे के वृक्ष ढह रहे हों। बहुत सी मज्जा बह रही है, वही फेन है। डरपोक जहाँ इसे देखकर डरते हैं, वहाँ उत्तम योद्धाओं के मन में सुख होता है॥87॥
English Translation:
The brave warriors fell here and there like uprooted trees, their bone marrow resembling froth in a river. Cowards trembled at the sight, while the brave felt a thrill of delight in their hearts.
