• अस बिचारि सुनु प्रानपति प्रभु सन बयरु बिहाइ।
  प्रीति करहु रघुबीर पद मम अहिवात न जाइ॥15 ख॥

भावार्थ:
हे प्राणपति सुनिए, ऐसा विचार कर प्रभु से वैर छोड़कर श्री रघुवीर के चरणों में प्रेम कीजिए, जिससे मेरा सुहाग न जाए॥15 ख॥

English Translation:
Listen, O’ Beloved, contemplating in this manner, abandon enmity with God and nurture devotion towards the feet of Shri Raghuveer, ensuring that I never lose you in this lifetime.

• बिहँसा नारि बचन सुनि काना। अहो मोह महिमा बलवाना॥
  नारि सुभाउ सत्य सब कहहीं। अवगुन आठ सदा उर रहहीं॥1॥

भावार्थ:
पत्नी के वचन कानों से सुनकर रावण खूब हँसा (और बोला-) अहो! मोह (अज्ञान) की महिमा बड़ी बलवान्‌ है। स्त्री का स्वभाव सब सत्य ही कहते हैं कि उसके हृदय में आठ अवगुण सदा रहते हैं-॥1॥

  रिपु कर रूप सकल तैं गावा। अति बिसाल भय मोहि सुनावा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
साहस, झूठ, चंचलता, माया (छल), भय (डरपोकपन) अविवेक (मूर्खता), अपवित्रता और निर्दयता। तूने शत्रु का समग्र (विराट) रूप गाया और मुझे उसका बड़ा भारी भय सुनाया॥2॥

…Courage, falsehood, fickleness, deceit, ignorance, fearfulness, impurity and mercilessness. You have revealed the enemy’s full cosmic form and conveyed its formidable terror to me…

• सो सब प्रिया सहज बस मोरें। समुझि परा अब प्रसाद तोरें॥
  जानिउँ प्रिया तोरि चतुराई। एहि बिधि कहहु मोरि प्रभुताई॥3॥

भावार्थ:
हे प्रिये! वह सब (यह चराचर विश्व तो) स्वभाव से ही मेरे वश में है। तेरी कृपा से मुझे यह अब समझ पड़ा। हे प्रिये! तेरी चतुराई मैं जान गया। तू इस प्रकार (इसी बहाने) मेरी प्रभुता का बखान कर रही है॥3॥

• तव बतकही गूढ़ मृगलोचनि। समुझत सुखद सुनत भय मोचनि॥
  मंदोदरि मन महुँ अस ठयऊ। पियहि काल बस मति भ्रम भयउ॥4॥

भावार्थ:
हे मृगनयनी! तेरी बातें बड़ी गूढ़ (रहस्यभरी) हैं, समझने पर सुख देने वाली और सुनने से भय छुड़ाने वाली हैं। मंदोदरी ने मन में ऐसा निश्चय कर लिया कि पति को कालवश मतिभ्रम हो गया है॥4॥

English Translation:
…O’ Doe-eyed beauty, your words are profoundly enlightening, delightful to comprehend and dispel fear upon hearing them.” Mandodari was now convinced in her heart that her husband’s impending death had deluded his mind.

• ऐहि बिधि करत बिनोद बहु प्रात प्रगट दसकंध।
  सहज असंक लंकपति सभाँ गयउ मद अंध॥16 क॥

भावार्थ:
इस प्रकार (अज्ञानवश) बहुत से विनोद करते हुए रावण को सबेरा हो गया। तब स्वभाव से ही निडर और घमंड में अंधा लंकापति सभा में गया॥16 (क)॥

English Translation:
Ravan spent the entire night indulging in laughter and jest in various ways, until the break of dawn. Then, the naturally fearless ruler of Lanka, consumed by his false pride, departed for his royal court.

• फूलइ फरइ न बेत जदपि सुधा बरषहिं जलद।
  मूरुख हृदयँ न चेत जौं गुर मिलहिं बिरंचि सम॥16 ख॥

भावार्थ:
यद्यपि बादल अमृत सा जल बरसाते हैं तो भी बेत फूलता-फलता नहीं। इसी प्रकार चाहे ब्रह्मा के समान भी ज्ञानी गुरु मिलें, तो भी मूर्ख के हृदय में चेत (ज्ञान) नहीं होता॥16 (ख)॥

English Translation:
Even if the clouds were to rain down nectar, a bamboo cane does not bear flowers or fruits. Similarly, the light of wisdom will never dawn in the heart of a fool, even though he may have a teacher as great as Lord Brahma.

• इहाँ प्रात जागे रघुराई। पूछा मत सब सचिव बोलाई॥
  कहहु बेगि का करिअ उपाई। जामवंत कह पद सिरु नाई॥1॥

भावार्थ:
यहाँ (सुबेल पर्वत पर) प्रातःकाल श्री रघुनाथजी जागे और उन्होंने सब मंत्रियों को बुलाकर सलाह पूछी कि शीघ्र बताइए, अब क्या उपाय करना चाहिए? जाम्बवान्‌ ने श्री रामजी के चरणों में सिर नवाकर कहा-॥1॥

• सुनु सर्बग्य सकल उर बासी। बुधि बल तेज धर्म गुन रासी॥
  मंत्र कहउँ निज मति अनुसारा। दूत पठाइअ बालि कुमारा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
हे सर्वज्ञ (सब कुछ जानने वाले)! हे सबके हृदय में बसने वाले (अंतर्यामी)! हे बुद्धि, बल, तेज, धर्म और गुणों की राशि! सुनिए! मैं अपनी बुद्धि के अनुसार सलाह देता हूँ कि बालिकुमार अंगद को दूत बनाकर भेजा जाए!॥2॥

English Translation:
…”Listen, O’ Omniscient Lord, You dwell in the hearts of all, and You are the repository of wisdom, glory, righteousness, and virtues. I will propose a solution according to my intellect. You should dispatch Bali’s son, Angad, to Lanka as an envoy.”

• नीक मंत्र सब के मन माना। अंगद सन कह कृपानिधाना॥
  बालितनय बुधि बल गुन धामा। लंका जाहु तात मम कामा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
यह अच्छी सलाह सबके मन में जँच गई। कृपा के निधान श्री रामजी ने अंगद से कहा- हे बल, बुद्धि और गुणों के धाम बालिपुत्र! हे तात! तुम मेरे काम के लिए लंका जाओ॥3॥

This suggestion found favour with everyone, and the epitome of mercy, Shri Ram, addressed Angad, “O’ Son of Bali, you are a mine of wisdom, strength, and virtues. Go to Lanka for the fulfilment of my mission…

• बहुत बुझाइ तुम्हहि का कहऊँ। परम चतुर मैं जानत अहऊँ॥
  काजु हमार तासु हित होई। रिपु सन करेहु बतकही सोई॥4॥

भावार्थ:
तुमको बहुत समझाकर क्या कहूँ! मैं जानता हूँ, तुम परम चतुर हो। शत्रु से वही बातचीत करना, जिससे हमारा काम हो और उसका कल्याण हो॥4॥

… You are exceedingly smart, and you already understand everything; there is no need for me to give you any further instructions. Engage in dialogue with the enemy in such a manner that it accomplishes our objectives while also promoting their well-being…

• प्रभु अग्या धरि सीस चरन बंदि अंगद उठेउ।
  सोइ गुन सागर ईस राम कृपा जा कर करहु॥17 क॥

भावार्थ:
प्रभु की आज्ञा सिर चढ़कर और उनके चरणों की वंदना करके अंगदजी उठे (और बोले-) हे भगवान्‌ श्री रामजी! आप जिस पर कृपा करें, वही गुणों का समुद्र हो जाता है॥17 क॥

English Translation:
Bowing before the Lord’s command and offering his obeisance to Shri Ram’s feet, Angad got up and said, “O’ Lord Ram, he himself becomes an ocean of virtues upon whom You bestow Your grace.”

• स्वयंसिद्ध सब काज नाथ मोहि आदरु दियउ।
  अस बिचारि जुबराज तन पुलकित हरषित हियउ॥17 ख॥

भावार्थ:
स्वामी सब कार्य अपने-आप सिद्ध हैं, यह तो प्रभु ने मुझ को आदर दिया है (जो मुझे अपने कार्य पर भेज रहे हैं)। ऐसा विचार कर युवराज अंगद का हृदय हर्षित और शरीर पुलकित हो गया॥17 ख॥

English Translation:
“All the tasks of My Lord are self-accomplishing. He has simply honoured me by assigning His task to me.” Prince Angad rejoiced in his heart with this thought, and his body thrilled with joy.
