बन्दि चरन उर धरि प्रभुताई। अंगद चलेउ सबहि सिरु नाई॥
प्रभु प्रताप उर सहज असंका। रन बाँकुरा बालिसुत बंका॥1॥

भावार्थ:
चरणों की वंदना करके और भगवान्‌ की प्रभुता हृदय में धरकर अंगद सबको सिर नवाकर चले। प्रभु के प्रताप को हृदय में धारण किए हुए रणबाँकुरे वीर बालिपुत्र स्वाभाविक ही निर्भय हैं॥1॥

English Translation:
After paying homage to the Lord’s feet and cherishing His glory in his heart, Angad bowed his head before everyone and departed. With the Lord’s glory enshrined in his heart, Angad, the gallant son of Bali, was a naturally fearless warrior.

पुर पैठत रावन कर बेटा। खेलत रहा सो होइ गै भेंटा॥
बातहिं बात करष बढ़ि आई। जुगल अतुल बल पुनि तरुनाई॥2॥

भावार्थ:
लंका में प्रवेश करते ही रावण के पुत्र से भेंट हो गई, जो वहाँ खेल रहा था। बातों ही बातों में दोनों में झगड़ा बढ़ गया (क्योंकि) दोनों ही अतुलनीय बलवान्‌ थे और फिर दोनों की युवावस्था थी॥2॥

English Translation:
Upon entering Lanka, Angad encountered one of Ravan’s sons (Prahast), engrossed in play. Their exchange swiftly escalated as both were extremely brave and in the prime of their youth.

तेहिं अंगद कहुँ लात उठाई। गहि पद पटकेउ भूमि भवाँई॥
निसिचर निकर देखि भट भारी। जहँ तहँ चले न सकहिं पुकारी॥3॥

भावार्थ:
उसने अंगद पर लात उठाई। अंगद ने (वही) पैर पकड़कर उसे घुमाकर जमीन पर दे पटका (मार गिराया)। राक्षस के समूह भारी योद्धा देखकर जहाँ-तहाँ (भाग) चले, वे डर के मारे पुकार भी न मचा सके॥3॥

English Translation:
Ravan’s son raised his foot to kick Angad, who seized his leg, swung him around, and dashed him to the ground with such massive force that it resulted in his demise. When the hosts of demons saw such a formidable warrior, they scattered in all directions, too frightened to even raise an alarm.

एक एक सन मरमु न कहहीं। समुझि तासु बध चुप करि रहहीं॥
भयउ कोलाहल नगर मझारी। आवा कपि लंका जेहिं जारी॥4॥

भावार्थ:
एक-दूसरे को मर्म (असली बात) नहीं बतलाते, उस (रावण के पुत्र) का वध समझकर सब चुप मारकर रह जाते हैं। (रावण पुत्र की मृत्यु जानकर और राक्षसों को भय के मारे भागते देखकर) नगरभर में कोलाहल मच गया कि जिसने लंका जलाई थी, वही वानर फिर आ गया है॥4॥

English Translation:
They refrained from informing one another of what had occurred, choosing instead to remain silent as they thought of the death of Ravan’s son. A cry echoed throughout the entire city, declaring that the same monkey who had set Lanka ablaze had arrived.

अब धौं कहा करिहि करतारा। अति सभीत सब करहिं बिचारा॥
बिनु पूछें मगु देहिं दिखाई। जेहि बिलोक सोइ जाइ सुखाई॥5॥

भावार्थ:
सब अत्यंत भयभीत होकर विचार करने लगे कि विधाता अब न जाने क्या करेगा। वे बिना पूछे ही अंगद को (रावण के दरबार की) राह बता देते हैं। जिसे ही वे देखते हैं, वही डर के मारे सूख जाता है॥5॥

English Translation:
Everyone became gripped with extreme fear, wondering, “O’ Lord, what will he do now?” Without uttering a word, they directed Angad to the royal palace. Anyone who caught Angad’s gaze turned pale with fear…

गयउ सभा दरबार तब सुमिरि राम पद कंज।
सिंह ठवनि इत उत चितव धीर बीर बल पुंज॥18॥

भावार्थ:
श्री रामजी के चरणकमलों का स्मरण करके अंगद रावण की सभा के द्वार पर गए और वे धीर, वीर और बल की राशि अंगद सिंह की सी ऐंड़ (शान) से इधर-उधर देखने लगे॥18॥

English Translation:
Meditating on Lord Ram’s lotus-feet within his heart, Angad arrived at the gates of Ravan’s royal court. The valiant Angad, an embodiment of strength and patience, stood tall and proud like a lion, surveying his surroundings.

तुरत निसाचर एक पठावा। समाचार रावनहि जनावा॥
सुनत बिहँसि बोला दससीसा। आनहु बोलि कहाँ कर कीसा॥1॥

भावार्थ:
तुरंत ही उन्होंने एक राक्षस को भेजा और रावण को अपने आने का समाचार सूचित किया। सुनते ही रावण हँसकर बोला- बुला लाओ, (देखें) कहाँ का बंदर है॥1॥

English Translation:
Angad swiftly dispatched a demon to inform Ravan of his arrival. Upon hearing the news, the ten-headed Ravan burst into laughter and remarked, “Let him come. Let us see from where this monkey has arrived.”

आयसु पाइ दूत बहु धाए। कपिकुंजरहि बोलि लै आए॥
अंगद दीख दसानन बैसें। सहित प्रान कज्जलगिरि जैसें॥2॥

भावार्थ:
आज्ञा पाकर बहुत से दूत दौड़े और वानरों में हाथी के समान अंगद को बुला लाए। अंगद ने रावण को ऐसे बैठे हुए देखा, जैसे कोई प्राणयुक्त (सजीव) काजल का पहाड़ हो!॥2॥

English Translation:
Hearing Ravan’s command, numerous messengers ran to bring Angad, the elephant among monkeys, to the court. Angad arrived and beheld Ravan seated in his court, resembling a towering mountain of kohl.

भुजा बिटप सिर सृंग समाना। रोमावली लता जनु नाना॥
मुख नासिका नयन अरु काना। गिरि कंदरा खोह अनुमाना॥3॥

भावार्थ:
भुजाएँ वृक्षों के और सिर पर्वतों के शिखरों के समान हैं। रोमावली मानो बहुत सी लताएँ हैं। मुँह, नाक, नेत्र और कान पर्वत की कन्दराओं और खोहों के बराबर हैं॥3॥

English Translation:
Ravan’s arms resembled mighty trees, his heads akin to towering mountain peaks, while the hair covering his body resembled countless creepers. His mouths, noses, eyes, and ears resembled vast caves and crevasses.

गयउ सभाँ मन नेकु न मुरा। बालितनय अतिबल बाँकुरा॥
उठे सभासद कपि कहुँ देखी। रावन उर भा क्रोध बिसेषी॥4॥

भावार्थ:
अत्यंत बलवान्‌ बाँके वीर बालिपुत्र अंगद सभा में गए, वे मन में जरा भी नहीं झिझके। अंगद को देखते ही सब सभासद् उठ खड़े हुए। यह देखकर रावण के हृदय में बड़ा क्रोध हुआ॥4॥

English Translation:
The son of Bali was an exceedingly courageous warrior, harbouring no fear in his heart as he stepped into Ravan’s court. The assembly immediately rose at the sight of Angad, igniting great fury within Ravan’s heart.

जथा मत्त गज जूथ महुँ पंचानन चलि जाइ।
राम प्रताप सुमिरि मन बैठ सभाँ सिरु नाइ॥19॥

भावार्थ:
जैसे मतवाले हाथियों के झुंड में सिंह (निःशंक होकर) चला जाता है, वैसे ही श्री रामजी के प्रताप का हृदय में स्मरण करके वे (निर्भय) सभा में सिर नवाकर बैठ गए॥19॥

English Translation:
Just as a fearless lion enters and walks amidst a herd of intoxicated elephants, Angad took his seat after bowing in Ravan’s court, having meditated on Shri Ram’s glory in his heart.

कह दसकंठ कवन तैं बंदर। मैं रघुबीर दूत दसकंधर॥
मम जनकहि तोहि रही मिताई। तव हित कारन आयउँ भाई॥1॥

भावार्थ:
रावण ने कहा- अरे बंदर! तू कौन है? (अंगद ने कहा-) हे दशग्रीव! मैं श्री रघुवीर का दूत हूँ। मेरे पिता से और तुमसे मित्रता थी, इसलिए हे भाई! मैं तुम्हारी भलाई के लिए ही आया हूँ॥1॥

The ten-headed Ravan asked, “Monkey, who are you?” Angad replied, “O’ Ten-shouldered Ravan, I am Shri Raghuveer’s messenger. My father and you were friends. That is why I have come for your welfare, O’ Sir…

उत्तम कुल पुलस्ति कर नाती। सिव बिंरचि पूजेहु बहु भाँती॥
बर पायहु कीन्हेहु सब काजा। जीतेहु लोकपाल सब राजा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
तुम्हारा उत्तम कुल है, पुलस्त्य ऋषि के तुम पौत्र हो। शिवजी की और ब्रह्माजी की तुमने बहुत प्रकार से पूजा की है। उनसे वर पाए हैं और सब काम सिद्ध किए हैं। लोकपालों और सब राजाओं को तुमने जीत लिया है॥2॥

English Translation:
…You belong to a noble clan and are a grandson of Sage Pulastya. You have worshipped Lord Brahma and Lord Shiv in many ways, received boons from them, and accomplished all your tasks. You have won over the guardians of various regions of the universe and all the kings…

नृप अभिमान मोह बस किंबा। हरि आनिहु सीता जगदंबा॥
अब सुभ कहा सुनहु तुम्ह मोरा। सब अपराध छमिहि प्रभु तोरा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
राजमद से या मोहवश तुम जगज्जननी सीताजी को हर लाए हो। अब तुम मेरे शुभ वचन (मेरी हितभरी सलाह) सुनो! (उसके अनुसार चलने से) प्रभु श्री रामजी तुम्हारे सब अपराध क्षमा कर देंगे॥3॥

English Translation:
…Under the influence of your kingly pride and attachments, you have abducted the Mother of the Universe, Sita ji. Now, heed my friendly advice, and the Lord will forgive all your offences…

दसन गहहु तृन कंठ कुठारी। परिजन सहित संग निज नारी॥
सादर जनकसुता करि आगें। एहि बिधि चलहु सकल भय त्यागें॥4॥

भावार्थ:
दाँतों में तिनका दबाओ, गले में कुल्हाड़ी डालो और कुटुम्बियों सहित अपनी स्त्रियों को साथ लेकर, आदरपूर्वक जानकीजी को आगे करके, इस प्रकार सब भय छोड़कर चलो-॥4॥

English Translation:
…Place a straw between your teeth, take an axe by your throat, and gather all your family members, including your wives, with you. Then, respectfully place the daughter of King Janak in front and proceed to Shri Ram, shedding all fear…

प्रनतपाल रघुबंसमनि त्राहि त्राहि अब मोहि।
आरत गिरा सुनत प्रभु अभय करेंगे तोहि॥20॥

भावार्थ:
और ‘हे शरणागत के पालन करने वाले रघुवंश शिरोमणि श्री रामजी! मेरी रक्षा कीजिए, रक्षा कीजिए।’ (इस प्रकार आर्त प्रार्थना करो।) आर्त पुकार सुनते ही प्रभु तुमको निर्भय कर देंगे॥20॥

English Translation:
…And when you plead, ‘O’ Protector of those who surrender to You, the crown jewel of the Raghu clan, save me, save me, now.’ The moment He hears your piteous cry, the Lord will surely rid you of all fear.”

रे कपिपोत बोलु संभारी। मूढ़ न जानेहि मोहि सुरारी॥
कहु निज नाम जनक कर भाई। केहि नातें मानिऐ मिताई॥1॥

भावार्थ:
(रावण ने कहा-) अरे बंदर के बच्चे! सँभालकर बोल! मूर्ख! मुझ देवताओं के शत्रु को तूने जाना नहीं? अरे भाई! अपना और अपने बाप का नाम तो बता। किस नाते से मित्रता मानता है?॥1॥

English Translation:
Ravan said, “O’ Monkey child, watch your tongue! Do you not realize that I am the enemy of the Demigods? “Come on, disclose your name and that of your father, and by what connection do you claim your friendship with me?”

अंगद नाम बालि कर बेटा। तासों कबहुँ भई ही भेंटा॥
अंगद बचन सुनत सकुचाना। रहा बालि बानर मैं जाना॥2॥

भावार्थ:
(अंगद ने कहा-) मेरा नाम अंगद है, मैं बालि का पुत्र हूँ। उनसे कभी तुम्हारी भेंट हुई थी? अंगद का वचन सुनते ही रावण कुछ सकुचा गया (और बोला-) हाँ, मैं जान गया (मुझे याद आ गया), बालि नाम का एक बंदर था॥2॥

English Translation:
Angad replied, “I am Angad, the son of Bali. Have you ever met him?” Upon hearing Angad’s response, Ravan grew uneasy and responded, “Yes, there was indeed one monkey named Bali…”

अंगद तहीं बालि कर बालक। उपजेहु बंस अनल कुल घालक॥
गर्भ न गयहु ब्यर्थ तुम्ह जायहु। निज मुख तापस दूत कहायहु॥3॥

भावार्थ:
अरे अंगद! तू ही बालि का लड़का है? अरे कुलनाशक! तू तो अपने कुलरूपी बाँस के लिए अग्नि रूप ही पैदा हुआ! गर्भ में ही क्यों न नष्ट हो गया तू? व्यर्थ ही पैदा हुआ जो अपने ही मुँह से तपस्वियों का दूत कहलाया!॥3॥

English Translation:
…O’ Angad, so you are the son of that Bali? You have emerged as blazing fire for the destruction of your own race, like fire destroys a cluster of bamboo. Why did you not perish within your mother’s womb? You were born in vain, now that you are proclaiming to be an envoy of hermits with your own mouth…

अब कहु कुसल बालि कहँ अहई। बिहँसि बचन तब अंगद कहई॥
दिन दस गएँ बालि पहिं जाई। बूझेहु कुसल सखा उर लाई॥4॥

भावार्थ:
अब बालि की कुशल तो बता, वह (आजकल) कहाँ है? तब अंगद ने हँसकर कहा- दस (कुछ) दिन बीतने पर (स्वयं ही) बालि के पास जाकर, अपने मित्र को हृदय से लगाकर, उसी से कुशल पूछ लेना॥4॥

English Translation:
…Now tell me about the well-being and whereabouts of Bali these days.” Hearing Ravan’s words, Angad laughed loudly and replied, “In just ten days, you shall go to Bali yourself and inquire about his welfare after embracing him…

राम बिरोध कुसल जसि होई। सो सब तोहि सुनाइहि सोई॥
सुनु सठ भेद होइ मन ताकें। श्री रघुबीर हृदय नहिं जाकें॥5॥

भावार्थ:
श्री रामजी से विरोध करने पर जैसी कुशल होती है, वह सब तुमको वे सुनावेंगे। हे मूर्ख! सुन, भेद उसी के मन में पड़ सकता है, (भेद नीति उसी पर अपना प्रभाव डाल सकती है) जिसके हृदय में श्री रघुवीर न हों॥5॥

English Translation:
…What type of welfare comes to a person who is hostile towards Shri Ram, my father Bali will surely tell you himself. Listen, O’ Fool, only those people harbour doubt in their hearts who lack devotion for Shri Raghuveer…

हम कुल घालक सत्य तुम्ह कुल पालक दससीस।
अंधउ बधिर न अस कहहिं नयन कान तव बीस॥21॥

भावार्थ:
सच है, मैं तो कुल का नाश करने वाला हूँ और हे रावण! तुम कुल के रक्षक हो। अंधे-बहरे भी ऐसी बात नहीं कहते, तुम्हारे तो बीस नेत्र और बीस कान हैं!॥21॥

English Translation:
…Indeed, I am the destroyer of my lineage, while you, O’ Ten-headed Ravan, stand as the protector of yours. Even a blind or deaf person would refrain from declaring such words, whereas you possess twenty ears and eyes…

सिव बिरंचि सुर मुनि समुदाई। चाहत जासु चरन सेवकाई॥
तासु दूत होइ हम कुल बोरा। अइसिहुँ मति उर बिहर न तोरा॥1॥

भावार्थ:
शिव, ब्रह्मा (आदि) देवता और मुनियों के समुदाय जिनके चरणों की सेवा (करना) चाहते हैं, उनका दूत होकर मैंने कुल को डुबा दिया? अरे ऐसी बुद्धि होने पर भी तुम्हारा हृदय फट नहीं जाता?॥1॥

English Translation:
…Whose feet Lord Shiv, Lord Brahma, all the Demigods, and hosts of Sages yearn to serve, as His very envoy, how could I possibly be the destroyer of my own lineage? To have such an intellect, does your heart simply not burst?”

सुनि कठोर बानी कपि केरी। कहत दसानन नयन तरेरी॥
खल तव कठिन बचन सब सहऊँ। नीति धर्म मैं जानत अहऊँ॥2॥

भावार्थ:
वानर (अंगद) की कठोर वाणी सुनकर रावण आँखें तरेरकर (तिरछी करके) बोला- अरे दुष्ट! मैं तेरे सब कठोर वचन इसीलिए सह रहा हूँ कि मैं नीति और धर्म को जानता हूँ (उन्हीं की रक्षा कर रहा हूँ)॥2॥

English Translation:
…Upon hearing Angad’s harsh words, Ravan retorted with an angry glance, saying, “Fool, I am tolerating your harsh words because I understand the rules prescribed in the Scriptures and the codes of righteousness.”

कह कपि धर्मसीलता तोरी। हमहुँ सुनी कृत पर त्रिय चोरी॥
देखी नयन दूत रखवारी। बूड़ि न मरहु धर्म ब्रतधारी॥3॥

भावार्थ:
अंगद ने कहा- तुम्हारी धर्मशीलता मैंने भी सुनी है। (वह यह कि) तुमने पराई स्त्री की चोरी की है! और दूत की रक्षा की बात तो अपनी आँखों से देख ली। ऐसे धर्म के व्रत को धारण (पालन) करने वाले तुम डूबकर मर नहीं जाते!॥3॥

English Translation:
Angad countered, “I have heard of your righteousness, you’ve abducted another person’s wife. I’ve seen firsthand how you treat an envoy. Why not just drown yourself and end your life, O’ Upholder of so-called righteousness?”…

कान नाक बिनु भगिनि निहारी। छमा कीन्हि तुम्ह धर्म बिचारी॥
धर्मसीलता तव जग जागी। पावा दरसु हमहुँ बड़भागी॥4॥

भावार्थ:
नाक-कान से रहित बहिन को देखकर तुमने धर्म विचारकर ही तो क्षमा कर दिया था! तुम्हारी धर्मशीलता जगजाहिर है। मैं भी बड़ा भाग्यवान्‌ हूँ, जो मैंने तुम्हारा दर्शन पाया?॥4॥

English Translation:
…When you beheld your sister, with her ears and nose severed, you forgave her after considering righteousness. Your acts of morality are renowned worldwide. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have witnessed your presence now.”

जनि जल्पसि जड़ जंतु कपि सठ बिलोकु मम बाहु।
लोकपाल बल बिपुल ससि ग्रसन हेतु सब राहु॥22 क॥

भावार्थ:
(रावण ने कहा-) अरे जड़ जन्तु वानर! व्यर्थ बक-बक न कर, अरे मूर्ख! मेरी भुजाएँ तो देख। ये सब लोकपालों के विशाल बल रूपी चंद्रमा को ग्रसने के लिए राहु हैं॥22 क॥

English Translation:
Ravan replied, “Stop blabbering needlessly, you foolish animal. Instead take a look at my arms, which represent many Rahus (adverse planet) to devour the Moon, representing the might of the guardians of the various regions of the universe…

पुनि नभ सर मम कर निकर कमलन्हि पर करि बास।
सोभत भयउ मराल इव संभु सहित कैलास॥22 ख॥

भावार्थ:
फिर (तूने सुना ही होगा कि) आकाश रूपी तालाब में मेरी भुजाओं रूपी कमलों पर बसकर शिवजी सहित कैलास हंस के समान शोभा को प्राप्त हुआ था!॥22 ख॥

English Translation:
…Then you must have heard that on my mighty arms, in the form of lotuses, Lord Shiv adorns Himself like a swan in the celestial lake of Mansarovar, akin to the vast sky, along with the Kailash mountain…

तुम्हरे कटक माझ सुनु अंगद। मो सन भिरिहि कवन जोधा बद॥
तब प्रभु नारि बिरहँ बलहीना। अनुज तासु दुख दुखी मलीना॥1॥

भावार्थ:
अरे अंगद! सुन, तेरी सेना में बता, ऐसा कौन योद्धा है, जो मुझसे भिड़ सकेगा। तेरा मालिक तो स्त्री के वियोग में बलहीन हो रहा है और उसका छोटा भाई उसी के दुःख से दुःखी और उदास है॥1॥

English Translation:
…Listen, Angad, tell me, which warrior in your army will be able to encounter me? Your Lord (Shri Ram), has grown weak as result of separation from His wife, while His younger brother (Shri Lakshman) is distressed from witnessing his brother in pain…

तुम्ह सुग्रीव कूलद्रुम दोऊ। अनुज हमार भीरु अति सोऊ॥
जामवंत मंत्री अति बूढ़ा। सो कि होइ अब समरारूढ़ा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
तुम और सुग्रीव, दोनों (नदी) तट के वृक्ष हो (रहा) मेरा छोटा भाई विभीषण, (सो) वह भी बड़ा डरपोक है। मंत्री जाम्बवान्‌ बहुत बूढ़ा है। वह अब लड़ाई में क्या चढ़ (उद्यत हो) सकता है?॥2॥

English Translation:
…You and Sugriv are akin to two trees on the riverbank (vulnerable to being washed away at any moment). My younger brother, Vibhishan, is a great coward. As for the minister, Jambvant, he is very old and unable to take a stand on the battlefield…

सिल्पि कर्म जानहिं नल नीला। है कपि एक महा बलसीला॥
आवा प्रथम नगरु जेहिं जारा। सुनत बचन कह बालिकुमारा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
नल-नील तो शिल्प-कर्म जानते हैं (वे लड़ना क्या जानें?)। हाँ, एक वानर जरूर महान्‌ बलवान्‌ है, जो पहले आया था और जिसने लंका जलाई थी। यह वचन सुनते ही बालि पुत्र अंगद ने कहा-॥3॥

English Translation:
Nal and Neel possess craftsmanship (but are not suited for fighting on the battlefield). But indeed, there is one mighty monkey in your army who had previously come to Lanka and set it ablaze.” Hearing these words, the son of Bali, replied,…

सत्य बचन कहु निसिचर नाहा। साँचेहुँ कीस कीन्ह पुर दाहा॥
रावण नगर अल्प कपि दहई। सुनि अस बचन सत्य को कहई॥4॥

भावार्थ:
हे राक्षसराज! सच्ची बात कहो! क्या उस वानर ने सचमुच तुम्हारा नगर जला दिया? रावण (जैसे जगद्विजयी योद्धा) का नगर एक छोटे से वानर ने जला दिया। ऐसे वचन सुनकर उन्हें सत्य कौन कहेगा?॥4॥

English Translation:
…”Tell me the truth, O’ Lord of the demons, is it a fact that a monkey burned down your capital? A puny monkey set fire to Ravan’s capital! Who would say these words are true upon hearing them?…

जो अति सुभट सराहेहु रावन। सो सुग्रीव केर लघु धावन॥
चलइ बहुत सो बीर न होई। पठवा खबरि लेन हम सोई॥5॥

भावार्थ:
हे रावण! जिसको तुमने बहुत बड़ा योद्धा कहकर सराहा है, वह तो सुग्रीव का एक छोटा सा दौड़कर चलने वाला हरकारा है। वह बहुत चलता है, वीर नहीं है। उसको तो हमने (केवल) खबर लेने के लिए भेजा था॥5॥

English Translation:
…O’ Ravan, the one you call a mighty warrior, is actually one of the smallest runners in Sugriv’s army. He walks a long distance, but he’s no champion. We sent him only to gather information…

सत्य नगरु कपि जारेउ बिनु प्रभु आयसु पाइ।
फिरि न गयउ सुग्रीव पहिं तेहिं भय रहा लुकाइ॥23 क॥

भावार्थ:
क्या सचमुच ही उस वानर ने प्रभु की आज्ञा पाए बिना ही तुम्हारा नगर जला डाला? मालूम होता है, इसी डर से वह लौटकर सुग्रीव के पास नहीं गया और कहीं छिप रहा!

English Translation:
Is it true that the monkey burned the city without the Lord’s permission? That’s why he didn’t return to Sugriv and instead went into hiding out of fear of the consequences of his actions.

सत्य कहहि दसकंठ सब मोहि न सुनि कछु कोह।
कोउ न हमारें कटक अस तो सन लरत जो सोह॥23 ख॥

भावार्थ:
हे रावण! तुम सब सत्य ही कहते हो, मुझे सुनकर कुछ भी क्रोध नहीं है। सचमुच हमारी सेना में कोई भी ऐसा नहीं है, जो तुमसे लड़ने में शोभा पाए।

English Translation:
Ravan, you speak the truth, and I harbour no anger upon hearing it. There is indeed no one in our army who would find it honourable to engage in battle with you.

प्रीति बिरोध समान सन करिअ नीति असि आहि।
जौं मृगपति बध मेडुकन्हि भल कि कहइ कोउ ताहि॥23 ग॥

भावार्थ:
प्रीति और वैर बराबरी वाले से ही करना चाहिए, नीति ऐसी ही है। सिंह यदि मेंढकों को मारे, तो क्या उसे कोई भला कहेगा?

English Translation:
Principles and policy dictate that love and animosity should be directed towards equals. If a lion were to kill frogs, would anyone consider it a commendable act?

जद्यपि लघुता राम कहुँ तोहि बधें बड़ दोष।
तदपि कठिन दसकंठ सुनु छत्र जाति कर रोष॥23 घ॥

भावार्थ:
यद्यपि तुम्हें मारने में श्री रामजी की लघुता है और बड़ा दोष भी है तथापि हे रावण! सुनो, क्षत्रिय जाति का क्रोध बड़ा कठिन होता है।

English Translation:
Though it would be demeaning for Lord Ram to kill you, and He would receive great blame for it, yet, mark me, the wrath of the warrior race is indeed fearsome, O’ Ten-headed Ravan.

बक्र उक्ति धनु बचन सर हृदय दहेउ रिपु कीस।
प्रतिउत्तर सड़सिन्ह मनहुँ काढ़त भट दससीस॥23 ङ॥

भावार्थ:
वक्रोक्ति रूपी धनुष से वचन रूपी बाण मारकर अंगद ने शत्रु का हृदय जला दिया। वीर रावण उन बाणों को मानो प्रत्युत्तर रूपी सँड़सियों से निकाल रहा है।

English Translation:
In this manner, Angad’s twisted words, sharp as arrows, shot forth from the bow of sarcasm, burning the enemy’s heart. The warrior Ravan proceeded to extract the arrows using a pair of pliers, in the form of his reply.

हँसि बोलेउ दसमौलि तब कपि कर बड़ गुन एक।
जो प्रतिपालइ तासु हित करइ उपाय अनेक॥23 च॥

भावार्थ:
तब रावण हँसकर बोला- बंदर में यह एक बड़ा गुण है कि जो उसे पालता है, उसका वह अनेकों उपायों से भला करने की चेष्टा करता है।

English Translation:
Then the ten-headed Ravan laughed and said, “Monkeys possess one great quality. They do everything in their power to serve those who take care of them.

धन्य कीस जो निज प्रभु काजा। जहँ तहँ नाचइ परिहरि लाजा॥
नाचि कूदि करि लोग रिझाई। पति हित करइ धर्म निपुनाई॥1॥

भावार्थ:
बंदर को धन्य है, जो अपने मालिक के लिए लाज छोड़कर जहाँ-तहाँ नाचता है। नाच-कूदकर, लोगों को रिझाकर, मालिक का हित करता है। यह उसके धर्म की निपुणता है।

English Translation:
Blessed are those monkeys, who for the sake of their master’s task, dance and skip everywhere, setting aside any sense of shame. They dance, jump, and entertain people, proficiently fulfilling their responsibility of assisting their masters. This is the mastery of their duty towards their master.

अंगद स्वामिभक्त तव जाती। प्रभु गुन कस न कहसि एहि भाँती॥
मैं गुन गाहक परम सुजाना। तव कटु रटनि करउँ नहिं काना॥2॥

भावार्थ:
हे अंगद! तेरी जाति स्वामिभक्त है (फिर भला) तू अपने मालिक के गुण इस प्रकार कैसे न बखानेगा? मैं गुण ग्राहक (गुणों का आदर करने वाला) और परम सुजान (समझदार) हूँ, इसी से तेरी जली-कटी बक-बक पर कान (ध्यान) नहीं देता।

English Translation:
Angad, your entire race is devoted to their master, so it’s no surprise that you too would extol your Master’s virtues in this manner. On the other hand, I appreciate good virtues and possess great wisdom, so I won’t lend an ear to your repeated bitter words.

कह कपि तव गुन गाहकताई। सत्य पवनसुत मोहि सुनाई॥
बन बिधंसि सुत बधि पुर जारा। तदपि न तेहिं कछु कृत अपकारा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
अंगद ने कहा- तुम्हारी सच्ची गुण ग्राहकता तो मुझे हनुमान्‌ ने सुनाई थी। उसने अशोक वन में विध्वंस (तहस-नहस) करके, तुम्हारे पुत्र को मारकर नगर को जला दिया था। तो भी (तुमने अपनी गुण ग्राहकता के कारण यही समझा कि) उसने तुम्हारा कुछ भी अपकार नहीं किया।

English Translation:
Angad replied, “The Son of the Wind God gave me a true account of your appreciation for good virtues. Even after witnessing the ransacking of your Ashok forest, the killing of your son, and the burning of your city, you still acknowledged that Hanuman ji did you no wrong.

सोइ बिचारि तव प्रकृति सुहाई। दसकंधर मैं कीन्हि ढिठाई॥
देखेउँ आइ जो कछु कपि भाषा। तुम्हरें लाज न रोष न माखा॥4॥

भावार्थ:
तुम्हारा वही सुंदर स्वभाव विचार कर, हे दशग्रीव! मैंने कुछ धृष्टता की है। हनुमान्‌ ने जो कुछ कहा था, उसे आकर मैंने प्रत्यक्ष देख लिया कि तुम्हें न लज्जा है, न क्रोध है और न चिढ़ है।

English Translation:
Recalling your charming disposition, O’ Ten-shouldered Ravan, I dared to undertake such audacity. Now, with my own eyes, I have witnessed what Hanuman ji also told me when he came back: that you possess no shame, anger, nor any feeling of resentment whatsoever.

जौं असि मति पितु खाए कीसा। कहि अस बचन हँसा दससीसा॥
पितहि खाइ खातेउँ पुनि तोही। अबहीं समुझि परा कछु मोही॥5॥

भावार्थ:
(रावण बोला-) अरे वानर! जब तेरी ऐसी बुद्धि है, तभी तो तू बाप को खा गया। ऐसा वचन कहकर रावण हँसा। अंगद ने कहा- पिता को खाकर फिर तुमको भी खा डालता, परन्तु अभी तुरंत कुछ और ही बात मेरी समझ में आ गई!

English Translation:
“With such a mentality, undoubtedly you have proven to be the cause of death for your own father, O’ Monkey.” Uttering these words, Ravan burst into laughter. Angad replied, “I have devoured my father, and now I will consume you as well. However, a thought has just occurred to me.

बालि बिमल जस भाजन जानी। हतउँ न तोहि अधम अभिमानी॥
कहु रावन रावन जग केते। मैं निज श्रवन सुने सुनु जेते॥6॥

भावार्थ:
अरे नीच अभिमानी! बालि के निर्मल यश का पात्र (कारण) जानकर तुम्हें मैं नहीं मारता। रावण! यह तो बता कि जगत्‌ में कितने रावण हैं? मैंने जितने रावण अपने कानों से सुन रखे हैं, उन्हें सुन-

English Translation:
Knowing you to be the reason of my father Bali’s pious glory and the recipient of his benevolence, I will not kill you, O’ Vile egotist. Tell me, how many Ravans are there in this world? Or listen to how many I have heard of.

बलिहि जितन एक गयउ पताला। राखेउ बाँधि सिसुन्ह हयसाला॥
खेलहिं बालक मारहिं जाई। दया लागि बलि दीन्ह छोड़ाई॥7॥

भावार्थ:
एक रावण तो बलि को जीतने पाताल में गया था, तब बच्चों ने उसे घुड़साल में बाँध रखा। बालक खेलते थे और जा-जाकर उसे मारते थे। बलि को दया लगी, तब उन्होंने उसे छुड़ा दिया।

English Translation:
Once, Ravan went to Pataal (the deepest realm beneath the Earth), with the intention of conquering Bali (the ruler of that domain). However, the children of Pataal bound him within the horses’ stable. They amused themselves by teasing and striking him until Bali, moved by compassion, ordered his release.

एक बहोरि सहसभुज देखा। धाइ धरा जिमि जंतु बिसेषा॥
कौतुक लागि भवन लै आवा। सो पुलस्ति मुनि जाइ छोड़ावा॥8॥

भावार्थ:
फिर एक रावण को सहस्रबाहु ने देखा, और उसने दौड़कर उसको एक विशेष प्रकार के (विचित्र) जन्तु की तरह (समझकर) पकड़ लिया। तमाशे के लिए वह उसे घर ले आया। तब पुलस्त्य मुनि ने जाकर उसे छुड़ाया।

English Translation:
Another Ravan was once discovered by the thousand-armed Sahastra Bahu. Mistaking him for a unique creature, Shasta Bahu ran and captured Ravan, bringing him to his palace for amusement. Sage Pulastya, Ravan’s grandfather, intervened and secured his release.

एक कहत मोहि सकुच अति रहा बालि कीं काँख।
इन्ह महुँ रावन तैं कवन सत्य बदहि तजि माख॥24॥

भावार्थ:
एक रावण की बात कहने में तो मुझे बड़ा संकोच हो रहा है- वह (बहुत दिनों तक) बालि की काँख में रहा था। इनमें से तुम कौन से रावण हो? खीझना छोड़कर सच-सच बताओ।

English Translation:
Then there was yet another Ravan, whom I feel ashamed to mention, as he was held in the armpits of my father, Bali. Among all these Ravans, which one are you? Please tell me truthfully, without getting angry.

सुनु सठ सोइ रावन बलसीला। हरगिरि जान जासु भुज लीला॥
जान उमापति जासु सुराई। पूजेउँ जेहि सिर सुमन चढ़ाई॥1॥

भावार्थ:
(रावण ने कहा-) अरे मूर्ख! सुन, मैं वही बलवान्‌ रावण हूँ, जिसकी भुजाओं की लीला (करामात) कैलास पर्वत जानता है। जिसकी शूरता उमापति महादेवजी जानते हैं, जिन्हें अपने सिर रूपी पुष्प चढ़ा-चढ़ाकर मैंने पूजा था॥1॥

English Translation:
Ravan replied, “Listen, O’ Fool, I am the same mighty Ravan, whose feats of arms are known to Mount Kailash, the sacred abode of Shiv ji. The Lord of Goddess Uma, Lord Shiv, is well aware of my valour, whom I worshipped by offering my heads as flowers…

सिर सरोज निज करन्हि उतारी। पूजेउँ अमित बार त्रिपुरारी॥
भुज बिक्रम जानहिं दिगपाला। सठ अजहूँ जिन्ह कें उर साला॥2॥

भावार्थ:
सिर रूपी कमलों को अपने हाथों से उतार-उतारकर मैंने अगणित बार त्रिपुरारि शिवजी की पूजा की है। अरे मूर्ख! मेरी भुजाओं का पराक्रम दिक्पाल जानते हैं, जिनके हृदय में वह आज भी चुभ रहा है॥2॥

English Translation:
…I severed my heads with my own hands and offered them as lotuses while worshipping the Slayer of Tripur, (the destroyer of the three cities of the demon brothers), countless times. The might of my arms is known to the guardians of the ten directions of the Universe. Fool, until this day, they bear the pain from the injuries inflicted on their chests…

जानहिं दिग्गज उर कठिनाई। जब जब भिरउँ जाइ बरिआई॥
जिन्ह के दसन कराल न फूटे। उर लागत मूलक इव टूटे॥3॥

भावार्थ:
दिग्गज (दिशाओं के हाथी) मेरी छाती की कठोरता को जानते हैं। जिनके भयानक दाँत, जब-जब जाकर मैं उनसे जबरदस्ती भिड़ा, मेरी छाती में कभी नहीं फूटे (अपना चिह्न भी बना सके), बल्कि मेरी छाती से लगते ही वे मूली की तरह टूट गए॥3॥

English Translation:
…The elephants upholding the ten directions of the cosmos know the toughness of my chest. Every time I forcefully engaged in combat with them, their fierce tusks never ruptured my chest; instead, they snapped off like radishes upon impact…

जासु चलत डोलति इमि धरनी। चढ़त मत्त गज जिमि लघु तरनी॥
सोइ रावन जग बिदित प्रतापी। सुनेहि न श्रवन अलीक प्रलापी॥4॥

भावार्थ:
जिसके चलते समय पृथ्वी इस प्रकार हिलती है जैसे मतवाले हाथी के चढ़ते समय छोटी नाव! मैं वही जगत प्रसिद्ध प्रतापी रावण हूँ। अरे झूठी बकवास करने वाले! क्या तूने मुझको कानों से कभी सुना?॥4॥

English Translation:
…Upon whose walking, the Earth shakes like a small boat under the weight of an intoxicated elephant. I am that same world-famous, glorious Ravan. Have you not heard of me, you lying, blabbering fool?…

तेहि रावन कहँ लघु कहसि नर कर करसि बखान।
रे कपि बर्बर खर्ब खल अब जाना तव ग्यान॥25॥

भावार्थ:
उस (महान प्रतापी और जगत प्रसिद्ध) रावण को (मुझे) तू छोटा कहता है और मनुष्य की बड़ाई करता है? अरे दुष्ट, असभ्य, तुच्छ बंदर! अब मैंने तेरा ज्ञान जान लिया॥25॥

English Translation:
…You regard Ravan as insignificant, and praise a mere mortal? O’ Foolish, uncivilized, puny monkey, I have now understood your lack of wisdom.”

सुनि अंगद सकोप कह बानी। बोलु संभारि अधम अभिमानी॥
सहसबाहु भुज गहन अपारा। दहन अनल सम जासु कुठारा॥1॥

भावार्थ:
रावण के ये वचन सुनकर अंगद क्रोध सहित वचन बोले- अरे नीच अभिमानी! सँभलकर (सोच-समझकर) बोल। जिनका फरसा सहस्रबाहु की भुजाओं रूपी अपार वन को जलाने के लिए अग्नि के समान था,॥1॥

Hearing Ravan’s words, Angad retorted with anger, “Mind your words, O’ Impious, egoistic one. Parshuram, whose formidable axe was like fire that engulfed the infinite arms of Sahastra Bahu, in the form of a dense forest…

जासु परसु सागर खर धारा। बूड़े नृप अगनित बहु बारा॥
तासु गर्ब जेहि देखत भागा। सो नर क्यों दससीस अभागा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
जिनके फरसा रूपी समुद्र की तीव्र धारा में अनगिनत राजा अनेकों बार डूब गए, उन परशुरामजी का गर्व जिन्हें देखते ही भाग गया, अरे अभागे दशशीश! वे मनुष्य क्यों कर हैं?॥2॥

English Translation:
…Whose axe, in the form of strong tides, had drowned countless kings numerous times. The same Parshuram’s pride had melted away as soon as he saw Shri Ram. Can that Shri Ram be a mere mortal, you unfortunate, ten-headed Ravan?…

राम मनुज कस रे सठ बंगा। धन्वी कामु नदी पुनि गंगा॥
पसु सुरधेनु कल्पतरु रूखा। अन्न दान अरु रस पीयूषा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
क्यों रे मूर्ख उद्दण्ड! श्री रामचंद्रजी मनुष्य हैं? कामदेव भी क्या धनुर्धारी है? और गंगाजी क्या नदी हैं? कामधेनु क्या पशु है? और कल्पवृक्ष क्या पेड़ है? अन्न भी क्या दान है? और अमृत क्या रस है?॥3॥

English Translation:
…How can Shri Ram be a mere human, you arrogant fool? Is the God of Love just an archer? Is the celestial river Ganga merely a river? Is the wish-yielding celestial cow, Surabhi, just an animal? Is the heavenly wish-yielding Kalpavriksh merely a tree? Is the gift of food an ordinary offering? Is the nectar just an ordinary juice?…

बैनतेय खग अहि सहसानन। चिंतामनि पुनि उपल दसानन॥
सुनु मतिमंद लोक बैकुंठा। लाभ कि रघुपति भगति अकुंठा॥4॥

भावार्थ:
गरुड़जी क्या पक्षी हैं? शेषजी क्या सर्प हैं? अरे रावण! चिंतामणि भी क्या पत्थर है? अरे ओ मूर्ख! सुन, वैकुण्ठ भी क्या लोक है? और श्री रघुनाथजी की अखण्ड भक्ति क्या (और लाभों जैसा ही) लाभ है?॥4॥

English Translation:
…Is the mighty Garud, the son of Vinta, just a mere bird? Is the thousand-headed King of serpents, Shesha, merely a snake? Is the wish-yielding gem, Chintamani, just a stone? O’ Ten-headed monster! Listen, O’ Dull-witted one, tell me, is the abode of Lord Vishnu, Vaikunth, an ordinary realm? Is unwavering devotion to Lord Raghupati just an ordinary gain?…

सेन सहित तव मान मथि बन उजारि पुर जारि।
कस रे सठ हनुमान कपि गयउ जो तव सुत मारि॥26॥

भावार्थ:
सेना समेत तेरा मान मथकर, अशोक वन को उजाड़कर, नगर को जलाकर और तेरे पुत्र को मारकर जो लौट गए (तू उनका कुछ भी न बिगाड़ सका), क्यों रे दुष्ट! वे हनुमान्‌जी क्या वानर हैं?॥26॥

English Translation:
…Tell me, O’ Fool, was Hanuman ji just an ordinary monkey who crushed not only your ego but also that of your army, destroyed your Ashok forest, set your Lanka ablaze, and departed unscathed after slaying your son?…

सुनु रावन परिहरि चतुराई। भजसि न कृपासिंधु रघुराई॥
जौं खल भएसि राम कर द्रोही। ब्रह्म रुद्र सक राखि न तोही॥1॥

भावार्थ:
अरे रावण! चतुराई (कपट) छोड़कर सुन। कृपा के समुद्र श्री रघुनाथजी का तू भजन क्यों नहीं करता? अरे दुष्ट! यदि तू श्री रामजी का वैरी हुआ तो तुझे ब्रह्मा और रुद्र भी नहीं बचा सकेंगे॥1॥

English Translation:
…Listen Ravan, forsake your cunning ways. Why do you not worship the ocean of mercy, the Chief of Raghus, Shri Ram? O’ Wretch, if you turn against Shri Ram, even Lord Brahma and Lord Shiv will not be able to offer you any protection…

मूढ़ बृथा जनि मारसि गाला। राम बयर अस होइहि हाला॥
तव सिर निकर कपिन्ह के आगें। परिहहिं धरनि राम सर लागें॥2॥

भावार्थ:
हे मूढ़! व्यर्थ गाल न मार (डींग न हाँक)। श्री रामजी से वैर करने पर तेरा ऐसा हाल होगा कि तेरे सिर समूह श्री रामजी के बाण लगते ही वानरों के आगे पृथ्वी पर पड़ेंगे,॥2॥

English Translation:
…Fool, your boasting is in vain. Should you harbour hostility towards Shri Ram, this shall be your fate: your severed heads struck down by the arrows of Lord Ram will fall on the ground in front of the monkeys…

ते तव सिर कंदुक सम नाना। खेलिहहिं भालु कीस चौगाना॥
जबहिं समर कोपिहि रघुनायक। छुटिहहिं अति कराल बहु सायक॥3॥

भावार्थ:
और रीछ-वानर तेरे उन गेंद के समान अनेकों सिरों से चौगान खेलेंगे। जब श्री रघुनाथजी युद्ध में कोप करेंगे और उनके अत्यंत तीक्ष्ण बहुत से बाण छूटेंगे,॥3॥

English Translation:
…And the monkeys and bears will play with those heads as if they were mere balls. When Lord Raghunayak becomes enraged on the battlefield and unleashes numerous fierce arrows,…

तब कि चलिहि अस गाल तुम्हारा। अस बिचारि भजु राम उदारा॥
सुनत बचन रावन परजरा। जरत महानल जनु घृत परा॥4॥

भावार्थ:
तब क्या तेरा गाल चलेगा? ऐसा विचार कर उदार (कृपालु) श्री रामजी को भज। अंगद के ये वचन सुनकर रावण बहुत अधिक जल उठा। मानो जलती हुई प्रचण्ड अग्नि में घी पड़ गया हो॥4॥

English Translation:
…will your big talk be of any use then? Realizing this, worship the generous Lord Shri Ram.” Hearing Angad’s words, Ravan’s rage flared up like a blazing fire into which clarified butter had been thrown.

कुंभकरन अस बंधु मम सुत प्रसिद्ध सक्रारि।
मोर पराक्रम नहिं सुनेहि जितेऊँ चराचर झारि॥27॥

भावार्थ:
(वह बोला- अरे मूर्ख!) कुंभकर्ण- ऐसा मेरा भाई है, इन्द्र का शत्रु सुप्रसिद्ध मेघनाद मेरा पुत्र है! और मेरा पराक्रम तो तूने सुना ही नहीं कि मैंने संपूर्ण जड़-चेतन जगत्‌ को जीत लिया है!॥27॥

English Translation:
Ravan replied, “I have a brother like Kumbhkaran, and the renowned Meghnad, the enemy of Demigod Indra, as my son. Have you not heard of my own valour, by which I have conquered the entire creation, including all animate and inanimate beings?…

सठ साखामृग जोरि सहाई। बाँधा सिंधु इहइ प्रभुताई॥
नाघहिं खग अनेक बारीसा। सूर न होहिं ते सुनु सब कीसा॥1॥

भावार्थ:
रे दुष्ट! वानरों की सहायता जोड़कर राम ने समुद्र बाँध लिया, बस, यही उसकी प्रभुता है। समुद्र को तो अनेकों पक्षी भी लाँघ जाते हैं। पर इसी से वे सभी शूरवीर नहीं हो जाते। अरे मूर्ख बंदर! सुन-॥1॥

English Translation:
O’ Fool, getting help from monkeys and erecting a bridge across the ocean, is this what you count as your Lord’s valour? Even birds can fly across the ocean, but they are not deemed brave because of this act, O’ Monkey…

मम भुज सागर बल जल पूरा। जहँ बूड़े बहु सुर नर सूरा॥
बीस पयोधि अगाध अपारा। को अस बीर जो पाइहि पारा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
मेरा एक-एक भुजा रूपी समुद्र बल रूपी जल से पूर्ण है, जिसमें बहुत से शूरवीर देवता और मनुष्य डूब चूके हैं। (बता,) कौन ऐसा शूरवीर है, जो मेरे इन अथाह और अपार बीस समुद्रों का पार पा जाएगा?॥2॥

English Translation:
Each of my arm brims with valour akin to the ocean, brimming with raging waters, where many valiant Demigods and men have drowned. Tell me, is there any courageous hero capable of traversing the twenty immense and unfathomable oceans, represented by my arms?…

दिगपालन्ह मैं नीर भरावा। भूप सुजस खल मोहि सुनावा॥
जौं पै समर सुभट तव नाथा। पुनि पुनि कहसि जासु गुन गाथा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
अरे दुष्ट! मैंने दिक्पालों तक से जल भरवाया और तू एक राजा का मुझे सुयश सुनाता है! यदि तेरा मालिक, जिसकी गुणगाथा तू बार-बार कह रहा है, संग्राम में लड़ने वाला योद्धा है-॥3॥

I have made the Guardians of the ten regions of the cosmos perform menial duties. O’ Fool, you glorify an earthly prince before me? If your master is truly valiant in battle, whose glory you repeatedly proclaim,…

तौ बसीठ पठवत केहि काजा। रिपु सन प्रीति करत नहिं लाजा॥
हरगिरि मथन निरखु मम बाहू। पुनि सठ कपि निज प्रभुहि सराहू॥4॥

भावार्थ:
तो (फिर) वह दूत किसलिए भेजता है? शत्रु से प्रीति (सन्धि) करते उसे लाज नहीं आती? (पहले) कैलास का मथन करने वाली मेरी भुजाओं को देख। फिर अरे मूर्ख वानर! अपने मालिक की सराहना करना॥4॥

English Translation:
then why did He send an envoy? Does He not feel ashamed to send a proposal of friendship to His enemy? First, cast your eyes upon my mighty arms that violently shook Lord Shiv’s Kailash mountain, and then extol your master, O’ Foolish monkey…

सूर कवन रावन सरिस स्वकर काटि जेहिं सीस।
हुने अनल अति हरष बहु बार साखि गौरीस॥28॥

भावार्थ:
रावण के समान शूरवीर कौन है? जिसने अपने हाथों से सिर काट-काटकर अत्यंत हर्ष के साथ बहुत बार उन्हें अग्नि में होम दिया! स्वयं गौरीपति शिवजी इस बात के साक्षी हैं॥28॥

English Translation:
Who else can boast of being a valiant hero like Ravan (myself), who severed his own heads with his own hands and joyfully offered them countless times to the sacrificial fire? Goddess Parvati’s Lord – Shiv ji Himself witnessed this act of mine…

जरत बिलोकेउँ जबहि कपाला। बिधि के लिखे अंक निज भाला॥
नर कें कर आपन बध बाँची। हसेउँ जानि बिधि गिरा असाँची॥1॥

भावार्थ:
मस्तकों के जलते समय जब मैंने अपने ललाटों पर लिखे हुए विधाता के अक्षर देखे, तब मनुष्य के हाथ से अपनी मृत्यु होना बाँचकर, विधाता की वाणी (लेख को) असत्य जानकर मैं हँसा॥1॥

English Translation:
As my heads were being consumed by the flames, I saw the inscription of Lord Brahma upon the foreheads, loudly foretelling my demise at the hands of a human. I laughed, for I knew that Brahma’s prophecy was false…

सोउ मन समुझि त्रास नहिं मोरें। लिखा बिरंचि जरठ मति भोरें॥
आन बीर बल सठ मम आगें। पुनि पुनि कहसि लाज पति त्यागें॥2॥

भावार्थ:
उस बात को समझकर (स्मरण करके) भी मेरे मन में डर नहीं है। (क्योंकि मैं समझता हूँ कि) बूढ़े ब्रह्मा ने बुद्धि भ्रम से ऐसा लिख दिया है। अरे मूर्ख! तू लज्जा और मर्यादा छोड़कर मेरे आगे बार-बार दूसरे वीर का बल कहता है!॥2॥

English Translation:
Recalling this incident, my heart does not feel frightened because I know that Lord Brahma is old and His mind has become delusional. Yet, you fool, you repeatedly praise another hero in my presence, displaying neither shame nor a sense of dignity.”

कह अंगद सलज्ज जग माहीं। रावन तोहि समान कोउ नाहीं॥
लाजवंत तव सहज सुभाऊ। निज मुख निज गुन कहसि न काऊ॥3॥

भावार्थ:
अंगद ने कहा- अरे रावण! तेरे समान लज्जावान्‌ जगत्‌ में कोई नहीं है। लज्जाशीलता तो तेरा सहज स्वभाव ही है। तू अपने मुँह से अपने गुण कभी नहीं कहता॥3॥

English Translation:
Angad replied, “Ravan, there is no one in this world as bashful as you. Shyness is inherent in your nature. You never boast of your virtues with your own mouth…

सिर अरु सैल कथा चित रही। ताते बार बीस तैं कहीं॥
सो भुजबल राखेहु उर घाली। जीतेहु सहसबाहु बलि बाली॥4॥

भावार्थ:
सिर काटने और कैलास उठाने की कथा चित्त में चढ़ी हुई थी, इससे तूने उसे बीसों बार कहा। भुजाओं के उस बल को तूने हृदय में ही टाल (छिपा) रखा है, जिससे तूने सहस्रबाहु, बलि और बालि को जीता था॥4॥

English Translation:
The story of cutting off your own heads and lifting the Kailash mountain is deeply ingrained in your heart. That’s why you’ve recounted it to me at least twenty times. The very might of your arms, with which you conquered Sahastra Bahu, Bali (my father), and Bali (the King of Pataal), you have kept secret in your heart…

सुनु मतिमंद देहि अब पूरा। काटें सीस कि होइअ सूरा॥
इंद्रजालि कहुँ कहिअ न बीरा। काटइ निज कर सकल सरीरा॥5॥

भावार्थ:
अरे मंद बुद्धि! सुन, अब बस कर। सिर काटने से भी क्या कोई शूरवीर हो जाता है? इंद्रजाल रचने वाले को वीर नहीं कहा जाता, यद्यपि वह अपने ही हाथों अपना सारा शरीर काट डालता है!॥5॥

English Translation:
Listen O’ Dull-witted fool, do not brag any more. Can anyone become a hero by cutting off his own heads? No one regards a magician as a hero even if he slices his entire body to pieces with his own hands…

जरहिं पतंग मोह बस भार बहहिं खर बृंद।
ते नहिं सूर कहावहिं समुझि देखु मतिमंद॥29॥

भावार्थ:
अरे मंद बुद्धि! समझकर देख। पतंगे मोहवश आग में जल मरते हैं, गदहों के झुंड बोझ लादकर चलते हैं, पर इस कारण वे शूरवीर नहीं कहलाते॥29॥

English Translation:
Because of infatuation, moths are drawn and consumed by fire upon contact, and herds of donkeys bear heavy burdens. They are not considered courageous for these reason. (Like them) you also are not a courageous hero, see for yourself, O’ Ignorant fool…

अब जनि बतबढ़ाव खल करही। सुनु मम बचन मान परिहरही॥
दसमुख मैं न बसीठीं आयउँ। अस बिचारि रघुबीर पठायउँ॥1॥

भावार्थ:
अरे दुष्ट! अब बतबढ़ाव मत कर, मेरा वचन सुन और अभिमान त्याग दे! हे दशमुख! मैं दूत की तरह (सन्धि करने) नहीं आया हूँ। श्री रघुवीर ने ऐसा विचार कर मुझे भेजा है-॥1॥

English Translation:
Cease your futile arguments, O’ Fool, and heed my word. Abandon your false pride. O’ Ten-headed Ravan, I have not arrived as an envoy to seek terms with you. Lord Raghuveer has dispatched me for different reasons…

बार बार अस कहइ कृपाला। नहिं गजारि जसु बंधे सृकाला॥
मन महुँ समुझि बचन प्रभु केरे। सहेउँ कठोर बचन सठ तेरे॥2॥

भावार्थ:
कृपालु श्री रामजी बार-बार ऐसा कहते हैं कि स्यार के मारने से सिंह को यश नहीं मिलता। अरे मूर्ख! प्रभु के (उन) वचनों को मन में समझकर (याद करके) ही मैंने तेरे कठोर वचन सहे हैं॥2॥

English Translation:
The compassionate Lord has often stated that a lion gains no honour by slaying a jackal. Bearing in mind the Lord’s words, I have endured your harsh words thus far, O’ Fool…

नाहिं त करि मुख भंजन तोरा। लैं जातेउँ सीतहि बरजोरा॥
जानेउँ तव बल अधम सुरारी। सूनें हरि आनिहि परनारी॥3॥

भावार्थ:
नहीं तो तेरे मुँह तोड़कर मैं सीताजी को जबरदस्ती ले जाता। अरे अधम! देवताओं के शत्रु! तेरा बल तो मैंने तभी जान लिया, जब तू सूने में पराई स्त्री को हर (चुरा) लाया॥3॥

English Translation:
Otherwise, I would have smashed your face and taken Sita ji back by force. O’ Wretch, enemy of the Demigods, I have gauged your strength from the very act of abducting another’s wife while she was alone…

तै निसिचर पति गर्ब बहूता। मैं रघुपति सेवक कर दूता॥
जौं न राम अपमानहिं डरऊँ। तोहि देखत अस कौतुक करउँ॥4॥

भावार्थ:
तू राक्षसों का राजा और बड़ा अभिमानी है, परन्तु मैं तो श्री रघुनाथजी के सेवक (सुग्रीव) का दूत (सेवक का भी सेवक) हूँ। यदि मैं श्री रामजी के अपमान से न डरूँ तो तेरे देखते-देखते ऐसा तमाशा करूँ कि-॥4॥

English Translation:
You are the Lord of the demons and exceedingly proud. Whereas I am a messenger of one of the Lord’s servants. If I were not fearful of offending Shri Ram, I would have displayed this spectacle before your very eyes that…

तोहि पटकि महि सेन हति चौपट करि तव गाउँ।
तव जुबतिन्ह समेत सठ जनकसुतहि लै जाउँ॥30॥

भावार्थ:
तुझे जमीन पर पटककर, तेरी सेना का संहार कर और तेरे गाँव को चौपट (नष्ट-भ्रष्ट) करके, अरे मूर्ख! तेरी युवती स्त्रियों सहित जानकीजी को ले जाऊँ॥30॥

English Translation:
…I would have crushed you to the ground, vanquished your army, destroyed your city, and taken King Janak’s daughter Sita ji, and all your wives, O’ Fool…

जौं अस करौं तदपि न बड़ाई।
मुएहि बधें नहिं कछु मनुसाई॥
कौल कामबस कृपिन बिमूढ़ा।
अति दरिद्र अजसी अति बूढ़ा॥1॥

भावार्थ:
यदि ऐसा करूँ, तो भी इसमें कोई बड़ाई नहीं है। मरे हुए को मारने में कुछ भी पुरुषत्व (बहादुरी) नहीं है। वाममार्गी, कामी, कंजूस, अत्यंत मूढ़, अति दरिद्र, बदनाम, बहुत बूढ़ा,॥1॥

English Translation:
…Even if I were to do so, it would not bring me any credit, for slaying one who is already dead is not an act of valour. A person who acts against the norms set by the Scriptures, one consumed by lust, excessively miserly, a profound fool, exceedingly impoverished, one plagued by infamy, extremely aged…

सदा रोगबस संतत क्रोधी।
बिष्नु बिमुख श्रुति संत बिरोधी॥
तनु पोषक निंदक अघ खानी
जीवत सव सम चौदह प्रानी॥2॥

भावार्थ:
नित्य का रोगी, निरंतर क्रोधयुक्त रहने वाला, भगवान्‌ विष्णु से विमुख, वेद और संतों का विरोधी, अपना ही शरीर पोषण करने वाला, पराई निंदा करने वाला और पाप की खान (महान्‌ पापी)- ये चौदह प्राणी जीते ही मुरदे के समान हैं॥2॥

English Translation:
…one who is perpetually ill, consistently angry, hostile to Lord Vishnu, an adversary of the Vedas and saints, one who is solely dedicated to indulging in his own body, one who slanders, one who is a repository of sin – these fourteen types of individuals should be deemed akin to living corpses…

अस बिचारि खल बधउँ न तोही।
अब जनि रिस उपजावसि मोही॥
सुनि सकोप कह निसिचर नाथा।
अधर दसन दसि मीजत हाथा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
अरे दुष्ट! ऐसा विचार कर मैं तुझे नहीं मारता। अब तू मुझमें क्रोध न पैदा कर (मुझे गुस्सा न दिला)। अंगद के वचन सुनकर राक्षस राज रावण दाँतों से होठ काटकर, क्रोधित होकर हाथ मलता हुआ बोला-॥3॥

English Translation:
….Realizing this, I refrain from killing you, O’ Wretch. Now, do not enrage me any further.” Hearing Angad’s words, the King of demons, Ravan, bit his lips, clenched his hands in anger and replied furiously…

रे कपि अधम मरन अब चहसी।
छोटे बदन बात बड़ि कहसी॥
कटु जल्पसि जड़ कपि बल जाकें।
बल प्रताप बुधि तेज न ताकें॥4॥

भावार्थ:
अरे नीच बंदर! अब तू मरना ही चाहता है! इसी से छोटे मुँह बड़ी बात कहता है। अरे मूर्ख बंदर! तू जिसके बल पर कड़ुए वचन बक रहा है, उसमें बल, प्रताप, बुद्धि अथवा तेज कुछ भी नहीं है॥4॥

English Translation:
…O’ Vile Monkey, do you wish to meet your demise? With your small mouth, you have spoken words of great audacity. O’ Foolish monkey, the One on whose strength you are blabbering such harsh words possesses no valour, glory, intellect, or splendour at all….

अगुन अमान जानि तेहि दीन्ह पिता बनबास।
सो दुख अरु जुबती बिरह पुनि निसि दिन मम त्रास॥31 क॥

भावार्थ:
उसे गुणहीन और मानहीन समझकर ही तो पिता ने वनवास दे दिया। उसे एक तो वह (उसका) दुःख, उस पर युवती स्त्री का विरह और फिर रात-दिन मेरा डर बना रहता है॥31 क॥

English Translation:
…Finding Him (Shri Ram) lacking in virtues and self-esteem, His father exiled Him in the forest. He is saddened by this and also carries the sorrow of separation from His wife in His heart. Above all, my fear torments Him day and night…

जिन्ह के बल कर गर्ब तोहि अइसे मनुज अनेक।
खाहिं निसाचर दिवस निसि मूढ़ समुझु तजि टेक॥31 ख॥

भावार्थ:
जिनके बल का तुझे गर्व है, ऐसे अनेकों मनुष्यों को तो राक्षस रात-दिन खाया करते हैं। अरे मूढ़! जिद्द छोड़कर समझ (विचार कर)॥ 31 ख॥

English Translation:
…The One whose strength you feel so proud of, my demons devour so many of such men every day. Understand this, O’ Fool, and give up your stubbornness.”

जब तेहिं कीन्हि राम कै निंदा।
क्रोधवंत अति भयउ कपिंदा॥
हरि हर निंदा सुनइ जो काना।
होइ पाप गोघात समाना॥1॥

भावार्थ:
जब उसने श्री रामजी की निंदा की, तब तो कपिश्रेष्ठ अंगद अत्यंत क्रोधित हुए, क्योंकि (शास्त्र ऐसा कहते हैं कि) जो अपने कानों से भगवान्‌ विष्णु और शिव की निंदा सुनता है, उसे गो वध के समान पाप होता है॥1॥

English Translation:
When Ravan insulted Shri Ram, the finest of monkeys, Angad became extremely furious. The person who listens to insults of Lord Hari or Lord Shankar incurs as great a sin as anyone who kills a cow.

कटकटान कपिकुंजर भारी।
दुहु भुजदंड तमकि महि मारी॥
डोलत धरनि सभासद खसे।
चले भाजि भय मारुत ग्रसे॥2॥

भावार्थ:
वानर श्रेष्ठ अंगद बहुत जोर से कटकटाए (शब्द किया) और उन्होंने तमककर (जोर से) अपने दोनों भुजदण्डों को पृथ्वी पर दे मारा। पृथ्वी हिलने लगी, (जिससे बैठे हुए) सभासद् गिर पड़े और भय रूपी पवन (भूत) से ग्रस्त होकर भाग चले॥2॥

English Translation:
The elephant among monkeys, Angad, let out a loud shrill and furiously struck both his mighty arms against the ground. The Earth trembled, and all the people in the assembly fell from their respective seats and took flight, as if possessed by the ghost of fear.

गिरत सँभारि उठा दसकंधर।
भूतल परे मुकुट अति सुंदर॥
कछु तेहिं लै निज सिरन्हि सँवारे।
कछु अंगद प्रभु पास पबारे॥3॥

भावार्थ:
रावण गिरते-गिरते सँभलकर उठा। उसके अत्यंत सुंदर मुकुट पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़े। कुछ तो उसने उठाकर अपने सिरों पर सुधाकर रख लिए और कुछ अंगद ने उठाकर प्रभु श्री रामचंद्रजी के पास फेंक दिए॥3॥

English Translation:
The ten-shouldered Ravan was also about to topple down but managed to recover himself and stand up. His charming crowns fell on the ground, but he picked up a few and adorned his heads with them. Meanwhile, Angad took a few and threw them in the direction of where Lord Ram was.

आवत मुकुट देखि कपि भागे।
दिनहीं लूक परन बिधि लागे॥
की रावन करि कोप चलाए।
कुलिस चारि आवत अति धाए॥4॥

भावार्थ:
मुकुटों को आते देखकर वानर भागे। (सोचने लगे) विधाता! क्या दिन में ही उल्कापात होने लगा (तारे टूटकर गिरने लगे)? अथवा क्या रावण ने क्रोध करके चार वज्र चलाए हैं, जो बड़े धाए के साथ (वेग से) आ रहे हैं?॥4॥

English Translation:
Seeing the crowns approaching, the monkeys fled and thought, “O Lord, how come meteor showers are happening in daytime? Or has Ravan hurled four thunderbolts in anger, which are coming with great speed?”

कह प्रभु हँसि जनि हृदयँ डेराहू।
लूक न असनि केतु नहिं राहू॥
ए किरीट दसकंधर केरे।
आवत बालितनय के प्रेरे॥5॥

भावार्थ:
प्रभु ने (उनसे) हँसकर कहा- मन में डरो नहीं। ये न उल्का हैं, न वज्र हैं और न केतु या राहु ही हैं। अरे भाई! ये तो रावण के मुकुट हैं, जो बालिपुत्र अंगद के फेंके हुए आ रहे हैं॥5॥

English Translation:
Lord Ram laughed and said, “Don’t be frightened in your hearts. They are neither meteor showers nor thunderbolts, nor the malefic planets, Rahu or Ketu. They are the crowns of the ten-shouldered Ravan, dispatched by the son of Bali, that are coming this way.”

तरकि पवनसुत कर गहे आनि धरे प्रभु पास।
कौतुक देखहिं भालु कपि दिनकर सरिस प्रकास॥32 क॥

भावार्थ:
पवन पुत्र श्री हनुमान्‌जी ने उछलकर उनको हाथ से पकड़ लिया और लाकर प्रभु के पास रख दिया। रीछ और वानर तमाशा देखने लगे। उनका प्रकाश सूर्य के समान था॥32 क॥

English Translation:
Hanuman ji leaped forth and caught Ravan’s crowns with his own hands. He then took them to Lord Ram and placed them before Him. The bears and monkeys watched in awe at this playful act; the crowns gleamed with brilliance akin to the Sun’s radiance.

उहाँ सकोपि दसानन सब सन कहत रिसाइ।
धरहु कपिहि धरि मारहु सुनि अंगद मुसुकाइ॥32 ख॥

भावार्थ:
वहाँ (सभा में) क्रोधयुक्त रावण सबसे क्रोधित होकर कहने लगा कि- बंदर को पकड़ लो और पकड़कर मार डालो। अंगद यह सुनकर मुस्कुराने लगे॥32 ख॥

English Translation:
In the royal assembly, Ravan angrily ordered, “Capture this monkey and kill him.” Upon hearing these words, Angad smiled.

एहि बधि बेगि सुभट सब धावहु। खाहु भालु कपि जहँ जहँ पावहु॥
मर्कटहीन करहु महि जाई। जिअत धरहु तापस द्वौ भाई॥1॥

भावार्थ:
(रावण फिर बोला-) इसे मारकर सब योद्धा तुरंत दौड़ो और जहाँ कहीं रीछ-वानरों को पाओ, वहीं खा डालो। पृथ्वी को बंदरों से रहित कर दो और जाकर दोनों तपस्वी भाइयों (राम-लक्ष्मण) को जीते जी पकड़ लो॥1॥

English Translation:
Ravan continued, “After killing him, all you brave warriors, quickly run and devour monkeys and bears wherever you find them. Go and make the Earth devoid of monkeys. And capture the two hermit Brothers alive.”

पुनि सकोप बोलेउ जुबराजा। गाल बजावत तोहि न लाजा॥
मरु गर काटि निलज कुलघाती। बल बिलोकि बिहरति नहिं छाती॥2॥

भावार्थ:
(रावण के ये कोपभरे वचन सुनकर) तब युवराज अंगद क्रोधित होकर बोले- तुझे गाल बजाते लाज नहीं आती! अरे निर्लज्ज! अरे कुलनाशक! गला काटकर (आत्महत्या करके) मर जा! मेरा बल देखकर भी क्या तेरी छाती नहीं फटती!॥2॥

English Translation:
The monkey prince once again became enraged and said, “Are you not ashamed to boast like this? Go cut your throat and end your life, you shameless destroyer of your own race. Your heart does not burst even upon witnessing my strength!…”

रे त्रिय चोर कुमारग गामी। खल मल रासि मंदमति कामी॥
सन्यपात जल्पसि दुर्बादा। भएसि कालबस खल मनुजादा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
अरे स्त्री के चोर! अरे कुमार्ग पर चलने वाले! अरे दुष्ट, पाप की राशि, मन्द बुद्धि और कामी! तू सन्निपात में क्या दुर्वचन बक रहा है? अरे दुष्ट राक्षस! तू काल के वश हो गया है!॥3॥

English Translation:
…O’ Stealer of women, you walk on an evil path, you are dull-witted, vile, lecherous and a repository of sins. You babble foul words and suffer from diarrhea of the mouth. You have come under the influence of Death, O’ Man-eater…

याको फलु पावहिगो आगें। बानर भालु चपेटन्हि लागें॥
रामु मनुज बोलत असि बानी। गिरहिं न तव रसना अभिमानी॥4॥

भावार्थ:
इसका फल तू आगे वानर और भालुओं के चपेटे लगने पर पावेगा। राम मनुष्य हैं, ऐसा वचन बोलते ही, अरे अभिमानी! तेरी जीभें नहीं गिर पड़तीं?॥4॥

English Translation:
…You will soon bear the fruits of this action when the monkeys and bears will slap your face. O’ Egoistic demon, it’s strange that despite uttering disgraceful words that Shri Ram is a mere mortal, your tongue has not fallen off…

गिरिहहिं रसना संसय नाहीं। सिरन्हि समेत समर महि माहीं॥5॥

भावार्थ:
इसमें संदेह नहीं है कि तेरी जीभें (अकेले नहीं वरन) सिरों के साथ रणभूमि में गिरेंगी॥5॥

English Translation:
…There is no doubt that your tongues will fall to the ground along with your heads in the battlefield…

सो नर क्यों दसकंध बालि बध्यो जेहिं एक सर।
बीसहुँ लोचन अंध धिग तव जन्म कुजाति जड़॥33 क॥

भावार्थ:
रे दशकन्ध! जिसने एक ही बाण से बालि को मार डाला, वह मनुष्य कैसे है? अरे कुजाति, अरे जड़! बीस आँखें होने पर भी तू अंधा है। तेरे जन्म को धिक्कार है॥33 क॥

English Translation:
…Could He, Shri Ram, be a mere human who vanquished Bali with just one arrow, O’ Ten-headed Ravan? Despite your twenty eyes, you remain blind, shame upon you. Your birth is meaningless, O’ Dim-witted demon of low stature…

तव सोनित कीं प्यास तृषित राम सायक निकर।
तजउँ तोहि तेहि त्रास कटु जल्पक निसिचर अधम॥33 ख॥

भावार्थ:
श्री रामचंद्रजी के बाण समूह तेरे रक्त की प्यास से प्यासे हैं। (वे प्यासे ही रह जाएँगे) इस डर से, अरे कड़वी बकवाद करने वाले नीच राक्षस! मैं तुझे छोड़ता हूँ॥33 ख॥

English Translation:
…The arsenal of Shri Ram’s arrows thirsts for your blood. Out of fear of displeasing Shri Ram, I shall spare your life, O’ Sinful demon with a bitter tongue…

मैं तव दसन तोरिबे लायक। आयसु मोहि न दीन्ह रघुनायक॥
असि रिस होति दसउ मुख तोरौं। लंका गहि समुद्र महँ बोरौं॥1॥

भावार्थ:
मैं तेरे दाँत तोड़ने में समर्थ हूँ। पर क्या करूँ? श्री रघुनाथजी ने मुझे आज्ञा नहीं दी। ऐसा क्रोध आता है कि तेरे दसों मुँह तोड़ डालूँ और (तेरी) लंका को पकड़कर समुद्र में डुबो दूँ॥1॥

English Translation:
…Though I am capable of shattering your teeth, Shri Raghunayak has not granted me permission to do so. Otherwise, I am filled with such rage that I feel like smashing all ten of your faces and then lifting Lanka up to submerge it into the ocean…

गूलरि फल समान तव लंका। बसहु मध्य तुम्ह जंतु असंका॥
मैं बानर फल खात न बारा। आयसु दीन्ह न राम उदारा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
तेरी लंका गूलर के फल के समान है। तुम सब कीड़े उसके भीतर (अज्ञानवश) निडर होकर बस रहे हो। मैं बंदर हूँ, मुझे इस फल को खाते क्या देर थी? पर उदार (कृपालु) श्री रामचंद्रजी ने वैसी आज्ञा नहीं दी॥2॥

English Translation:
…Your Lanka resembles the fruit of a fig tree, within which all your demons unsuspectingly reside, much like the insects inside the fruit of a fig tree. I am a monkey and would waste no time to devour the fruit, but the gracious Lord Ram has not given me permission to do so.”

जुगुति सुनत रावन मुसुकाई। मूढ़ सिखिहि कहँ बहुत झुठाई॥
बालि न कबहुँ गाल अस मारा। मिलि तपसिन्ह तैं भएसि लबारा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
अंगद की युक्ति सुनकर रावण मुस्कुराया (और बोला-) अरे मूर्ख! बहुत झूठ बोलना तूने कहाँ से सीखा? बालि ने तो कभी ऐसा गाल नहीं मारा। जान पड़ता है तू तपस्वियों से मिलकर लबार हो गया है॥3॥

English Translation:
Ravan smiled upon hearing these cutting remarks and said, “Fool, from where did you learn to speak so many lies? Bali never boasted like this. It appears that your association with the hermits has turned you into a liar.”

साँचेहुँ मैं लबार भुज बीहा। जौं न उपारिउँ तव दस जीहा॥
समुझि राम प्रताप कपि कोपा। सभा माझ पन करि पद रोपा॥4॥

भावार्थ:
(अंगद ने कहा-) अरे बीस भुजा वाले! यदि तेरी दसों जीभें मैंने नहीं उखाड़ लीं तो सचमुच मैं लबार ही हूँ। श्री रामचंद्रजी के प्रताप को समझकर (स्मरण करके) अंगद क्रोधित हो उठे और उन्होंने रावण की सभा में प्रण करके (दृढ़ता के साथ) पैर रोप दिया॥4॥

English Translation:
Angad replied, O’ Demon with twenty arms, indeed I would be a liar, if I do not pull out your ten tongues.” Then, invoking Shri Ram’s glory in his heart, Angad filled himself with anger and firmly planted his foot in the midst of the entire assembly.

जौं मम चरन सकसि सठ टारी। फिरहिं रामु सीता मैं हारी॥
सुनहु सुभट सब कह दससीसा। पद गहि धरनि पछारहु कीसा॥5॥

भावार्थ:
(और कहा-) अरे मूर्ख! यदि तू मेरा चरण हटा सके तो श्री रामजी सीताजी लौट जाएँगे, मैं हार मान लूँगा। रावण ने कहा- हे सब वीरो! सुनो, पैर पकड़कर बंदर को पृथ्वी पर पछाड़ दो॥5॥

English Translation:
Angad said to Ravan, “O’ Fool, if anyone is able to lift my foot, I will accept my defeat and not fight with you on behalf of Shri Ram. Regardless of this, Shri Ram Himself will kill you and return with Sita ji to Ayodhya, that is for certain.” The ten-headed Ravan exclaimed, “Listen, all you brave warriors! Seize the foot of the monkey and dash him to the ground.”

इंद्रजीत आदिक बलवाना। हरषि उठे जहँ तहँ भट नाना॥
झपटहिं करि बल बिपुल उपाई। पद न टरइ बैठहिं सिरु नाई॥6॥

भावार्थ:
इंद्रजीत (मेघनाद) आदि अनेकों बलवान्‌ योद्धा जहाँ-तहाँ से हर्षित होकर उठे। वे पूरे बल से बहुत से उपाय करके झपटते हैं। पर पैर टलता नहीं, तब सिर नीचा करके फिर अपने-अपने स्थान पर जा बैठ जाते हैं॥6॥

English Translation:
Ravan’s son Indrajeet and many other brave warriors eagerly got up from their seats and rushed forward with all their might, employing various techniques, yet Angad’s foot remained unmoved. They then returned to their seats, with their heads bowed down in shame.

पुनि उठि झपटहिं सुर आराती। टरइ न कीस चरन एहि भाँती॥
पुरुष कुजोगी जिमि उरगारी। मोह बिटप नहिं सकहिं उपारी॥7॥

भावार्थ:
(काकभुशुण्डिजी कहते हैं-) वे देवताओं के शत्रु (राक्षस) फिर उठकर झपटते हैं, परन्तु हे सर्पों के शत्रु गरुड़जी! अंगद का चरण उनसे वैसे ही नहीं टलता जैसे कुयोगी (विषयी) पुरुष मोह रूपी वृक्ष को नहीं उखाड़ सकते॥7॥

English Translation:
Kak Bhushundi ji tells Garud ji, “Once again, the enemies of the Demigods (demons) rose up and dashed forward, but they were unable to move the monkey’s foot, just like persons attached to material desires are unable to uproot the tree of desires implanted in their hearts.”

कोटिन्ह मेघनाद सम सुभट उठे हरषाइ।
झपटहिं टरै न कपि चरन पुनि बैठहिं सिर नाइ॥34 क॥

भावार्थ:
करोड़ों वीर योद्धा जो बल में मेघनाद के समान थे, हर्षित होकर उठे, वे बार-बार झपटते हैं, पर वानर का चरण नहीं उठता, तब लज्जा के मारे सिर नवाकर बैठ जाते हैं॥34 क॥

English Translation:
Millions of courageous warriors possessing strength equal to Meghnad’s might, eagerly got up and rushed to lift Angad’s foot with joy, only to find themselves unable to do so. Disheartened, they bowed their heads and sat back down.

भूमि न छाँड़त कपि चरन देखत रिपु मद भाग।
कोटि बिघ्न ते संत कर मन जिमि नीति न त्याग॥34 ख॥

भावार्थ:
जैसे करोड़ों विघ्न आने पर भी संत का मन नीति को नहीं छोड़ता, वैसे ही वानर (अंगद) का चरण पृथ्वी को नहीं छोड़ता। यह देखकर शत्रु (रावण) का मद दूर हो गया!॥34 ख॥

English Translation:
Angad’s foot remained firmly planted on the ground, much like the unwavering determination of a saintly individual who remains steadfast in the pursuit of righteousness, despite facing countless obstacles. The enemy’s pride dissipated upon witnessing this.
