अस कहि नयन नीर भरि गहि पद कंपित गात।
नाथ भजहु रघुनाथहि अचल होइ अहिवात॥7॥

भावार्थ:
ऐसा कहकर, नेत्रों में (करुणा का) जल भरकर और पति के चरण पकड़कर, काँपते हुए शरीर से मंदोदरी ने कहा- हे नाथ! श्री रघुनाथजी का भजन कीजिए, जिससे मेरा सुहाग अचल हो जाए॥7॥

English Translation:
With these words, tears welled up in Mandodari’s eyes, and her limbs trembled as she clasped Ravan’s feet. She pleaded, “My Lord, worship Shri Raghunath, so that my marital life may last for eternity.”

तब रावन मयसुता उठाई। कहै लाग खल निज प्रभुताई॥1॥

भावार्थ:
तब रावण ने मंदोदरी को उठाया और वह दुष्ट उससे अपनी प्रभुता कहने लगा- हे प्रिये! सुन, तूने व्यर्थ ही भय मान रखा है। बता तो जगत्‌ में मेरे समान योद्धा है कौन?॥1॥

English Translation:
Ravan then lifted Mandodari, the Maya demon’s daughter, and began boasting of his own prowess, saying, “Listen, my dear, do not fear needlessly. Is there any warrior in the entire world like me?”

बरुन कुबेर पवन जम काला। भुज बल जितेउँ सकल दिगपाला॥
देव दनुज नर सब बस मोरें। कवन हेतु उपजा भय तोरें॥2॥

भावार्थ:
वरुण, कुबेर, पवन, यमराज आदि सभी दिक्पालों को तथा काल को भी मैंने अपनी भुजाओं के बल से जीत रखा है। देवता, दानव और मनुष्य सभी मेरे वश में हैं। फिर तुझको यह भय किस कारण उत्पन्न हो गया?॥2॥

English Translation:
With the might of my arms, I have conquered Demigods such as Varun (Water), Kuber (Wealth), Pawan (Wind), Yamraj (God of Death), and all the guardians of the ten directions. All the Demigods, demons and human beings are under my control. So why, then, has fear gripped you?

नाना बिधि तेहि कहेसि बुझाई। सभाँ बहोरि बैठ सो जाई॥
मंदोदरीं हृदयँ अस जाना। काल बस्य उपजा अभिमाना॥3॥

भावार्थ:
मंदोदरी ने उसे बहुत तरह से समझाकर कहा (किन्तु रावण ने उसकी एक भी बात न सुनी) और वह फिर सभा में जाकर बैठ गया। मंदोदरी ने हृदय में ऐसा जान लिया कि काल के वश होने से पति को अभिमान हो गया है॥3॥

English Translation:
After reassuring Mandodari in various ways, he returned once more to his court and took his seat. In her heart, Mandodari realized that Ravan was under the sway of his impending death, which fueled his false pride.

सभाँ आइ मंत्रिन्ह तेहिं बूझा। करब कवन बिधि रिपु सैं जूझा॥
कहहिं सचिव सुनु निसिचर नाहा। बार बार प्रभु पूछहु काहा॥4॥

भावार्थ:
सभा में आकर उसने मंत्रियों से पूछा कि शत्रु के साथ किस प्रकार से युद्ध करना होगा? मंत्री कहने लगे- हे राक्षसों के नाथ! हे प्रभु! सुनिए, आप बार-बार क्या पूछते हैं?॥4॥

English Translation:
Upon returning to his court, Ravan once again sought advice from his ministers, asking, “How shall we proceed in confronting the enemy?” The ministers responded, “Listen, O’ Lord of the Demons, why do you repeatedly inquire about this matter?”

कहहु कवन भय करिअ बिचारा। नर कपि भालु अहार हमारा॥5॥

भावार्थ:
कहिए तो (ऐसा) कौन-सा बड़ा भय है, जिसका विचार किया जाए? (भय की बात ही क्या है?) मनुष्य और वानर-भालू तो हमारे भोजन (की सामग्री) हैं॥5॥

English Translation:
What is there to fear that we must contemplate? Humans, monkeys, and bears are merely our food to consume.

सब के बचन श्रवन सुनि कह प्रहस्त कर जोरि।
नीति बिरोध न करिअ प्रभु मंत्रिन्ह मति अति थोरि॥8॥

भावार्थ:
कानों से सबके वचन सुनकर (रावण का पुत्र) प्रहस्त हाथ जोड़कर कहने लगा- हे प्रभु! नीति के विरुद्ध कुछ भी नहीं करना चाहिए, मन्त्रियों में बहुत ही थोड़ी बुद्धि है॥8॥

English Translation:
Having listened to the words of the ministers, Ravan’s son, Prahast, started to speak with folded palms, “My Lord, I request you not to act against the principles of righteousness, for the wisdom of the ministers is limited.”

कहहिं सचिव सठ ठकुर सोहाती। नाथ न पूर आव एहि भाँती॥
बारिधि नाघि एक कपि आवा। तासु चरित मन महुँ सबु गावा॥1॥

भावार्थ:
ये सभी मूर्ख (खुशामदी) मन्त्र ठकुरसुहाती (मुँहदेखी) कह रहे हैं। हे नाथ! इस प्रकार की बातों से पूरा नहीं पड़ेगा। एक ही बंदर समुद्र लाँघकर आया था। उसका चरित्र सब लोग अब भी मन-ही-मन गाया करते हैं (स्मरण किया करते हैं) ॥1॥

English Translation:
These foolish ministers are engaging in flattery, speaking words that they believe you desire to hear. My Lord, their words will not serve you in any beneficial manner. A monkey leaped across the ocean and arrived in Lanka. To this day, all the people reminisce and sing about his exploits in their hearts.

छुधा न रही तुम्हहि तब काहू। जारत नगरु कस न धरि खाहू॥
सुनत नीक आगें दुख पावा। सचिवन अस मत प्रभुहि सुनावा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
उस समय तुम लोगों में से किसी को भूख न थी? (बंदर तो तुम्हारा भोजन ही हैं, फिर) नगर जलाते समय उसे पकड़कर क्यों नहीं खा लिया? इन मन्त्रियों ने स्वामी (आप) को ऐसी सम्मति सुनायी है जो सुनने में अच्छी है पर जिससे आगे चलकर दुःख पाना होगा॥2॥

English Translation:
Did everyone lose their appetite then? When he was burning the city, why didn’t anyone catch and devour him? These ministers have provided advice that is pleasing to hear, but in the end, it will bring sorrow.

जेहिं बारीस बँधायउ हेला। उतरेउ सेन समेत सुबेला॥
सो भनु मनुज खाब हम भाई। बचन कहहिं सब गाल फुलाई॥3॥

भावार्थ:
जिसने खेल-ही-खेल में समुद्र बँधा लिया और जो सेना सहित सुबेल पर्वत पर आ उतरा है। हे भाई! कहो वह मनुष्य है, जिसे कहते हो कि हम खा लेंगे? सब गाल फुला-फुलाकर (पागलों की तरह) वचन कह रहे हैं!॥3॥

English Translation:
The One who effortlessly built a bridge over the ocean, as if it were child’s play and led His army to the Subel mountain, can He be an ordinary man, whom you claim to devour? All these people are simply bragging (talking like mad people).

तात बचन मम सुनु अति आदर। जनि मन गुनहु मोहि करि कादर॥
प्रिय बानी जे सुनहिं जे कहहीं। ऐसे नर निकाय जग अहहीं॥4॥

भावार्थ:
हे तात! मेरे वचनों को बहुत आदर से (बड़े गौर से) सुनिए। मुझे मन में कायर न समझ लीजिएगा। जगत्‌ में ऐसे मनुष्य झुंड-के-झुंड (बहुत अधिक) हैं, जो प्यारी (मुँह पर मीठी लगने वाली) बात ही सुनते और कहते हैं॥4॥

English Translation:
Dear father, please listen to me attentively and do not consider me to be a coward. In this world, there are countless individuals who are inclined to speak and hear pleasant words.

बचन परम हित सुनत कठोरे। सुनहिं जे कहहिं ते नर प्रभु थोरे॥
प्रथम बसीठ पठउ सुनु नीती। सीता देइ करहु पुनि प्रीती॥5॥

भावार्थ:
हे प्रभो! सुनने में कठोर परन्तु (परिणाम में) परम हितकारी वचन जो सुनते और कहते हैं, वे मनुष्य बहुत ही थोड़े हैं। नीति सुनिये, (उसके अनुसार) पहले दूत भेजिये, और (फिर) सीता को देकर श्रीरामजी से प्रीति (मेल) कर लीजिये॥5॥

English Translation:
Those men, however, who hear and speak words that are most beneficial, yet harsh to the ears are rare, my Lord. Listen to my righteous advice, first, send an envoy to Shri Ram, and upon returning Sita ji, establish friendship with Him.

नारि पाइ फिरि जाहिं जौं तौ न बढ़ाइअ रारि।
नाहिं त सन्मुख समर महि तात करिअ हठि मारि॥9॥

भावार्थ:
यदि वे स्त्री पाकर लौट जाएँ, तब तो (व्यर्थ) झगड़ा न बढ़ाइये। नहीं तो (यदि न फिरें तो) हे तात! सम्मुख युद्धभूमि में उनसे हठपूर्वक (डटकर) मार-काट कीजिए॥9॥

English Translation:
If Shri Ram were to go back with His army upon getting His wife, there is no point in provoking a fight. However, if He does not, then you may confront Him face to face on the battlefield, O’ Father, and fight fiercely.

यह मत जौं मानहु प्रभु मोरा।
उभय प्रकार सुजसु जग तोरा॥
सुत सन कह दसकंठ रिसाई।
असि मति सठ केहिं तोहि सिखाई॥1॥

भावार्थ:
हे प्रभो! यदि आप मेरी यह सम्मति मानेंगे, तो जगत्‌ में दोनों ही प्रकार से आपका सुयश होगा। रावण ने गुस्से में भरकर पुत्र से कहा- अरे मूर्ख! तुझे ऐसी बुद्धि किसने सिखायी?॥1॥

English Translation:
O’ Lord, if you agree with my advice, your fair renown will spread throughout the world, in both the scenarios, by returning Janaki ji or by winning or bravely perishing in battle. The ten-headed Ravan got extremely angry upon hearing his son’s advice and said, “Who has imparted such wisdom to you?”

अबहीं ते उर संसय होई।
बेनुमूल सुत भयहु घमोई॥
सुनि पितु गिरा परुष अति घोरा।
चला भवन कहि बचन कठोरा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
अभी से हृदय में सन्देह (भय) हो रहा है? हे पुत्र! तू तो बाँस की जड़ में घमोई हुआ (तू मेरे वंश के अनुकूल या अनुरूप नहीं हुआ)। पिता की अत्यन्त घोर और कठोर वाणी सुनकर प्रहस्त ये कड़े वचन कहता हुआ घर को चला गया॥2॥

English Translation:
You are harbouring doubt and fear even before the fight has begun. You have indeed become a blemish on your clan, akin to a prickly plant that infects bamboo roots, causing destruction to the bamboo. Upon hearing his father’s extremely harsh and rude words, Prahast departed for his home, uttering these bitter words.

हित मत तोहि न लागत कैसें।
काल बिबस कहुँ भेषज जैसें॥
संध्या समय जानि दससीसा।
भवन चलेउ निरखत भुज बीसा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
हित की सलाह आपको कैसे नहीं लगती (आप पर कैसे असर नहीं करती), जैसे मृत्यु के वश हुए (रोगी) को दवा नहीं लगती। संध्या का समय जानकर रावण अपनी बीसों भुजाओं को देखता हुआ महल को चला॥3॥

English Translation:
Just as medicine proves ineffective on a person destined to die, good advice seems to have no impact on you. Realizing that it was now evening, the ten-headed Ravan left for his palace, proudly admiring his twenty arms.

लंका सिखर उपर आगारा।
अति बिचित्र तहँ होइ अखारा॥
बैठ जाइ तेहिं मंदिर रावन।
लागे किंनर गुन गन गावन॥4॥

भावार्थ:
लंका की चोटी पर एक अत्यन्त विचित्र महल था। वहाँ नाच-गान का अखाड़ा जमता था। रावण उस महल में जाकर बैठ गया। किन्नर उसके गुण समूहों को गाने लगे॥4॥

English Translation:
Atop Lanka, there stood a palace with a unique amphitheatre. Ravan went and sat there, while the Kinnars (celestial musicians and dancers) started reciting songs in praise of him.

बाजहिं ताल पखाउज बीना।
नृत्य करहिं अपछरा प्रबीना॥5॥

भावार्थ:
ताल (करताल), पखावज (मृदंग) और बीणा बज रहे हैं। नृत्य में प्रवीण अप्सराएँ नाच रही हैं॥5॥

English Translation:
Many musical instruments, such as cymbals, drums, tabor, and harp (veena) played, while skilled celestial damsels danced.

सुनासीर सत सरिस सो संतत करइ बिलास।
परम प्रबल रिपु सीस पर तद्यपि सोच न त्रास॥10॥ (दोहा)

भावार्थ:
वह निरन्तर सैकड़ों इन्द्रों के समान भोग-विलास करता रहता है। यद्यपि (श्रीरामजी-सरीखा) अत्यन्त प्रबल शत्रु सिर पर है, फिर भी उसको न तो चिन्ता है और न डर ही है॥10॥

English Translation:
Ravan constantly indulged in luxuries, surpassing the opulence of even the Demigod Indra, the Lord of Heaven, a hundred times over. He harboured no fear or worry about the immensely powerful enemy at his door.

इहाँ सुबेल सैल रघुबीरा।
उतरे सेन सहित अति भीरा॥
सिखर एक उतंग अति देखी।
परम रम्य सम सुभ्र बिसेषी॥1॥ (चौपाई)

भावार्थ:
यहाँ श्री रघुवीर सुबेल पर्वत पर सेना की बड़ी भीड़ (बड़े समूह) के साथ उतरे। पर्वत का एक बहुत ऊँचा, परम रमणीय, समतल और विशेष रूप से उज्ज्वल शिखर देखकर-॥1॥

English Translation:
At this end, Shri Raghuveer encamped with His vast army on the Subel mountain. Upon seeing a very high, supremely picturesque, flat, and notably shiny bright summit,…

तहँ तरु किसलय सुमन सुहाए।
लछिमन रचि निज हाथ डसाए॥
ता पर रुचिर मृदुल मृगछाला।
तेहिं आसन आसीन कृपाला॥2॥

भावार्थ:
वहाँ लक्ष्मणजी ने वृक्षों के कोमल पत्ते और सुंदर फूल अपने हाथों से सजाकर बिछा दिए। उस पर सुंदर और कोमल मृग छाला बिछा दी। उसी आसन पर कृपालु श्री रामजी विराजमान थे॥2॥

English Translation:
Lakshman ji meticulously adorned a spot with beautiful flowers and soft leaves from the trees with his own hands, and laid a charming and soft deerskin on top of them. It was upon this seat that the gracious Lord Ram rested Himself.

प्रभु कृत सीस कपीस उछंगा।
बाम दहिन दिसि चाप निषंगा॥
दुहुँ कर कमल सुधारत बाना।
कह लंकेस मंत्र लगि काना॥3॥

भावार्थ:
प्रभु श्री रामजी वानरराज सुग्रीव की गोद में अपना सिर रखे हैं। उनकी बायीं ओर धनुष तथा दाहिनी ओर तरकस (रखा) है। वे अपने दोनों करकमलों से बाण सुधार रहे हैं। विभीषणजी कानों से लगकर सलाह कर रहे हैं॥3॥

English Translation:
The Lord rested His head on Sugriv’s lap, with the bow to His left and the quiver to His right. With both His lotus-like hands, He gently caressed His arrow, while the King of Lanka, Vibhishan, whispered some words into His ears.

बड़भागी अंगद हनुमाना।
चरन कमल चापत बिधि नाना॥
प्रभु पाछें लछिमन बीरासन।
कटि निषंग कर बान सरासन॥4॥

भावार्थ:
परम भाग्यशाली अंगद और हनुमान अनेकों प्रकार से प्रभु के चरण कमलों को दबा रहे हैं। लक्ष्मणजी कमर में तरकस कसे और हाथों में धनुष-बाण लिए वीरासन से प्रभु के पीछे सुशोभित हैं॥4॥

English Translation:
The blessed Angad and Hanuman ji tenderly massaged the Lord’s lotus feet in various ways. Lakshman ji sat behind in a warrior’s posture, with his quiver securely fastened to his waist and bow and arrow in his hands.

**ऐहि बिधि कृपा रूप गुन धाम रामु आसीन।
धन्य ते नर एहिं ध्यान जे रहत सदा लयलीन॥11 क॥

भावार्थ:
इस प्रकार कृपा, रूप (सौंदर्य) और गुणों के धाम श्री रामजी विराजमान हैं। वे मनुष्य धन्य हैं, जो सदा इस ध्यान में लौ लगाए रहते हैं॥11 क॥

English Translation:
In this manner, the gracious Lord, a mine of virtues and beauty, Shri Ram, rested. Those people are truly blessed who are always immersed in thoughts of the Lord, as depicted here.

पूरब दिसा बिलोकि प्रभु देखा उदित मयंक।
कहत सबहि देखहु ससिहि मृगपति सरिस असंक॥11 ख॥

भावार्थ:
पूर्व दिशा की ओर देखकर प्रभु श्री रामजी ने चंद्रमा को उदय हुआ देखा। तब वे सबसे कहने लगे- चंद्रमा को तो देखो। कैसा सिंह के समान निडर है!॥11 ख॥

English Translation:
Gazing eastward, the Lord beheld the moon ascending above the horizon and addressing everyone, He said, “Just look at the Moon; see how fearless, akin to the king of the jungle (lion), it appears…”

पूरब दिसि गिरिगुहा निवासी।
परम प्रताप तेज बल रासी॥
मत्त नाग तम कुंभ बिदारी।
ससि केसरी गगन बन चारी॥1॥

भावार्थ:
पूर्व दिशा रूपी पर्वत की गुफा में रहने वाला, अत्यंत प्रताप, तेज और बल की राशि यह चंद्रमा रूपी सिंह अंधकार रूपी मतवाले हाथी के मस्तक को विदीर्ण करके आकाश रूपी वन में निर्भय विचर रहा है॥1॥

English Translation:
Residing in the eastern quarter, which may be compared to a mountain cave, the Moon is an embodiment of supreme grandeur, glory, and strength. Tearing off the forehead of an intoxicated elephant, symbolizing darkness, the lion in the form of the Moon roams in the forest of the sky.

बिथुरे नभ मुकुताहल तारा।
निसि सुंदरी केर सिंगारा॥
कह प्रभु ससि महुँ मेचकताई।
कहहु काह निज निज मति भाई॥2॥

भावार्थ:
आकाश में बिखरे हुए तारे मोतियों के समान हैं, जो रात्रि रूपी सुंदर स्त्री के श्रृंगार हैं। प्रभु ने कहा- भाइयो! चंद्रमा में जो कालापन है, वह क्या है? अपनी-अपनी बुद्धि के अनुसार कहो॥2॥

English Translation:
The stars scattered across the sky resemble numerous pearls adorning a beautiful woman, akin to the night.” The Lord then asked, “O’ Brothers, now tell me, what do you think of the dark spots on the Moon, according to each of your perspectives?”

कह सुग्रीव सुनहु रघुराई।
ससि महुँ प्रगट भूमि कै झाँई॥
मारेउ राहु ससिहि कह कोई।
उर महँ परी स्यामता सोई॥3॥

भावार्थ:
सुग्रीव ने कहा- हे रघुनाथजी! सुनिए! चंद्रमा में पृथ्वी की छाया दिखाई दे रही है। किसी ने कहा- चंद्रमा को राहु ने मारा था। वही (चोट का) काला दाग हृदय पर पड़ा हुआ है॥3॥

English Translation:
Sugriv said, “Listen, O’ Chief of the Raghus, it is only the shadow of the Earth that is seen on the Moon.” Someone said, “The demon Rahu had struck Moon; the scar left on his heart appears as dark spots on it.”

कोउ कह जब बिधि रति मुख कीन्हा।
सार भाग ससि कर हरि लीन्हा॥
छिद्र सो प्रगट इंदु उर माहीं।
तेहि मग देखिअ नभ परिछाहीं॥4॥

भावार्थ:
कोई कहता है- जब ब्रह्मा ने (कामदेव की स्त्री) रति का मुख बनाया, तब उसने चंद्रमा का सार भाग निकाल लिया (जिससे रति का मुख तो परम सुंदर बन गया, परन्तु चंद्रमा के हृदय में छेद हो गया)। वही छेद चंद्रमा के हृदय में वर्तमान है, जिसकी राह से आकाश की काली छाया उसमें दिखाई पड़ती है॥4॥

English Translation:
Someone else said, “When Lord Brahma created the face of Cupid’s wife, Rati, He extracted the essence of the Moon’s beauty and bestowed it upon her. That void is still visible in the heart of the Moon, and the shadow of the sky falls upon this passage, resembling the Moon’s dark spots.”

प्रभु कह गरल बंधु ससि केरा।
अति प्रिय निज उर दीन्ह बसेरा॥
बिष संजुत कर निकर पसारी।
जारत बिरहवंत नर नारी॥5॥

भावार्थ:
प्रभु श्री रामजी ने कहा- विष चंद्रमा का बहुत प्यारा भाई है, इसी से उसने विष को अपने हृदय में स्थान दे रखा है। विषयुक्त अपने किरण समूह को फैलाकर वह वियोगी नर-नारियों को जलाता रहता है॥5॥

English Translation:
The Lord said, “Poison is Moon’s most beloved brother and that is why the Moon has given him a place in his heart. Spreading its rays of material desires, it causes agony in the hearts of separated lovers (men and women).”
