भावार्थ:
कुछ मारे गए, कुछ घायल हुए, कुछ भागकर गढ़ पर चढ़ गए। अपने बल से शत्रुदल को विचलित करके रीछ और वानर (वीर) गरज रहे हैं॥47॥
English Translation:
Some demons died, others were injured, and yet others fled, climbing onto the fort. The monkeys and bears, with their immense strength, caused the demon army to lose ground and roared loudly in triumph.
भावार्थ:
रात हुई जानकर वानरों की चारों सेनाएँ (टुकड़ियाँ) वहाँ आईं, जहाँ कोसलपति श्री रामजी थे। श्री रामजी ने ज्यों ही सबको कृपा करके देखा त्यों ही ये वानर श्रमरहित हो गए॥1॥
English Translation:
Knowing it was night, the four divisions of the army reached where the Lord of Koshal was. Lord Ram cast a merciful glance at all of them, instantly freeing all the monkeys and bears from their fatigue.
भावार्थ:
वहाँ (लंका में) रावण ने मंत्रियों को बुलाया और जो योद्धा मारे गए थे, उन सबको सबसे बताया। (उसने कहा-) वानरों ने आधी सेना का संहार कर दिया! अब शीघ्र बताओ, क्या विचार (उपाय) करना चाहिए?॥2॥
English Translation:
In Lanka, the ten-headed Ravan summoned all his ministers. He informed them about the brave fighters who had been killed in action. He said, “The monkeys have slain half of the demon army. Now, quickly tell me a plan we should undertake?”
भावार्थ:
माल्यवंत (नाम का एक) अत्यंत बूढ़ा राक्षस था। वह रावण की माता का पिता (अर्थात् उसका नाना) और श्रेष्ठ मंत्री था। वह अत्यंत पवित्र नीति के वचन बोला- हे तात! कुछ मेरी सीख भी सुनो-॥3॥
English Translation:
Malyavan was an extremely old demon, Ravan’s maternal grandfather, and an eminent minister. He spoke words of wisdom to Ravan, “O Son, listen to my advice…”
भावार्थ:
जब से तुम सीता को हर लाए हो, तब से इतने अपशकुन हो रहे हैं कि जो वर्णन नहीं किए जा सकते। वेद-पुराणों ने जिनका यश गाया है, उन श्री राम से विमुख होकर किसी ने सुख नहीं पाया॥4॥
English Translation:
…Ever since you abducted Sita ji, everything inauspicious has been happening, beyond description. The Vedas and Scriptures sing the glories of Lord Ram, and no one can find happiness by being hostile to Him…
भावार्थ:
भाई हिरण्यकशिपु सहित हिरण्याक्ष को बलवान् मधु-कैटभ को जिन्होंने मारा था, वे ही कृपा के समुद्र भगवान् (रामरूप से) अवतरित हुए हैं॥ 48 क॥
English Translation:
…The same gracious Lord who killed Hiranyakashyapu along with his brother Hiranyaksha and slew the powerful demons Madhu and Kaitabha has taken an avatar as Lord Ram…
भावार्थ:
जो कालस्वरूप हैं, दुष्टों के समूह रूपी वन के भस्म करने वाले (अग्नि) हैं, गुणों के धाम और ज्ञानघन हैं एवं शिवजी और ब्रह्माजी भी जिनकी सेवा करते हैं, उनसे वैर कैसा?॥48 ख॥
English Translation:
…The one who is Death personified, a fire that consumes the forest of sinners, a repository of virtues, and a mine of wisdom. There is no point in being hostile to the one who is worshipped by Lord Shiv and Lord Brahma…
भावार्थ:
(अतः) वैर छोड़कर उन्हें जानकीजी को दे दो और कृपानिधान परम स्नेही श्री रामजी का भजन करो। रावण को उसके वचन बाण के समान लगे। (वह बोला-) अरे अभागे! मुँह काला करके (यहाँ से) निकल जा॥1॥
English Translation:
…So, renounce your animosity, return Videhi to Him, and worship the ocean of mercy who is extremely affectionate to His devotees.” Malyavan’s words pierced Ravan like arrows, and he said, “O unworthy one, blacken your face and leave from here…
भावार्थ:
तू बूढ़ा हो गया, नहीं तो तुझे मार ही डालता। अब मेरी आँखों को अपना मुँह न दिखला। रावण के ये वचन सुनकर उसने (माल्यवान् ने) अपने मन में ऐसा अनुमान किया कि इसे कृपानिधान श्री रामजी अब मारना ही चाहते हैं॥2॥
English Translation:
…You have become old; otherwise, I would have killed you. Now, never show me your face again.” Hearing Ravan’s words, Malyavan pondered in his heart that the ocean of mercy, Lord Ram, must have decided to slay Ravan, and that is why he is not paying any heed to good advice.
भावार्थ:
वह रावण को दुर्वचन कहता हुआ उठकर चला गया। तब मेघनाद क्रोधपूर्वक बोला- सबेरे मेरी करामात देखना। मैं बहुत कुछ करूँगा, थोड़ा क्या कहूँ? (जो कुछ वर्णन करूँगा थोड़ा ही होगा)॥3॥
English Translation:
Thus, Malyavan rose and left, uttering curses at his grandson Ravan as he went. Then, Meghnad spoke in rage, “Tomorrow you will witness my prowess on the battlefield. I will accomplish much, and there is no point in boasting about it now.”
भावार्थ:
पुत्र के वचन सुनकर रावण को भरोसा आ गया। उसने प्रेम के साथ उसे गोद में बैठा लिया। विचार करते-करते ही सबेरा हो गया। वानर फिर चारों दरवाजों पर जा लगे॥4॥
English Translation:
Hearing his son’s words, Ravan felt confident and affectionately made Meghnad sit on his lap. As they discussed their strategy, dawn broke. The monkeys once again assailed the four gates of Lanka.
भावार्थ:
वानरों ने क्रोध करके दुर्गम किले को घेर लिया। नगर में बहुत ही कोलाहल (शोर) मच गया। राक्षस बहुत तरह के अस्त्र-शस्त्र धारण करके दौड़े और उन्होंने किले पर पहाड़ों के शिखर ढहाए॥5॥
English Translation:
In their fury, the monkey army laid siege to the insurmountable fort. There was a huge outcry in the city of Lanka. The demons rushed out, carrying various weapons, and hurled down mountain peaks from the top of the fort.
भावार्थ:
उन्होंने पर्वतों के करोड़ों शिखर ढहाए, अनेक प्रकार से गोले चलने लगे। वे गोले ऐसा घहराते हैं जैसे वज्रपात हुआ हो (बिजली गिरी हो) और योद्धा ऐसे गरजते हैं, मानो प्रलयकाल के बादल हों। विकट वानर योद्धा भिड़ते हैं, कट जाते हैं (घायल हो जाते हैं), उनके शरीर जर्जर (चलनी) हो जाते हैं, तब भी वे लटते नहीं (हिम्मत नहीं हारते)। वे पहाड़ उठाकर उसे किले पर फेंकते हैं। राक्षस जहाँ के तहाँ (जो जहाँ होते हैं, वहीं) मारे जाते हैं।
English Translation:
The demons hurled down millions of mountain peaks and various kinds of bombshells on the monkey army. The bombs exploded like the thundering sound of lightning, while the contending warriors roared like clouds at the time of universal dissolution. The mighty monkey warriors clashed with the demons. Though severely wounded and badly battered from their combat, they did not give up. Holding rocks and mountain peaks, they hurled them at the fort, crushing and killing the demons wherever they stood.
भावार्थ:
मेघनाद ने कानों से ऐसा सुना कि वानरों ने आकर फिर किले को घेर लिया है। तब वह वीर किले से उतरा और डंका बजाकर उनके सामने चला॥49॥
English Translation:
When Meghnad heard that the monkey army had again surrounded the fort, the brave warrior descended and sallied forth at the beat of the drums to meet the enemy face to face.
भावार्थ:
(मेघनाद ने पुकारकर कहा-) समस्त लोकों में प्रसिद्ध धनुर्धर कोसलाधीश दोनों भाई कहाँ हैं? नल, नील, द्विविद, सुग्रीव और बल की सीमा अंगद और हनुमान् कहाँ हैं?
English Translation:
He shouted, “Where are the two Brothers, the Princes of the Koshal Kingdom, the famous archers who are renowned across all the spheres of the cosmos? Where are Nal, Neel, Dvivid, Sugriv, and the limits of strength, Angad and Hanuman?”
भावार्थ:
भाई से द्रोह करने वाला विभीषण कहाँ है? आज मैं सबको और उस दुष्ट को तो हठपूर्वक (अवश्य ही) मारूँगा। ऐसा कहकर उसने धनुष पर कठिन बाणों का सन्धान किया और अत्यंत क्रोध करके उसे कान तक खींचा।
English Translation:
“Where is Vibhishan, the traitor of his own brother? Today, I will forcibly kill everyone.” Uttering these words, Meghnad fitted formidable arrows on his bow and, with great fury, strung it up to his ear.
भावार्थ:
वह बाणों के समूह छोड़ने लगा। मानो बहुत से पंखवाले साँप दौड़े जा रहे हों। जहाँ-तहाँ वानर गिरते दिखाई पड़ने लगे। उस समय कोई भी उसके सामने न हो सके।
English Translation:
…and began discharging volleys of arrows that flew like so many winged serpents. The monkeys started falling to the ground in every direction, and no one dared to face him at that time.
भावार्थ:
रीछ-वानर जहाँ-तहाँ भाग चले। सबको युद्ध की इच्छा भूल गई। रणभूमि में ऐसा एक भी वानर या भालू नहीं दिखाई पड़ा, जिसको उसने प्राणमात्र अवशेष न कर दिया हो।
English Translation:
The monkeys and bears fled in every direction, abandoning all desire to continue fighting. There was not a single monkey or bear in the army whom he had left without severe defeat in spirit, sparing only their lives.
भावार्थ:
फिर उसने सबको दस-दस बाण मारे, वानर वीर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़े। बलवान् और धीर मेघनाद सिंह के समान नाद करके गरजने लगा।
English Translation:
Meghnad struck each brave monkey warrior with ten arrows, causing them to fall to the ground. Staunch on the battlefield, the mighty Meghnad then roared like a lion.
भावार्थ:
सारी सेना को बेहाल देखकर पवनसुत हनुमान् क्रोध करके ऐसे दौड़े मानो स्वयं काल दौड़ आता हो। उन्होंने तुरंत एक बड़ा भारी पहाड़ उखाड़ लिया और बड़े ही क्रोध के साथ उसे मेघनाद पर छोड़ा।
English Translation:
Seeing the army in distress, the son of Wind God, Hanuman ji, rushed angrily, as though the God of Death himself was furiously approaching. He quickly uprooted a massive mountain and hurled it towards Meghnad with intense rage.
भावार्थ:
पहाड़ों को आते देखकर वह आकाश में उड़ गया। उसके रथ, सारथी और घोड़े सब नष्ट हो गए। हनुमान्जी उसे बार-बार ललकारते हैं। पर वह निकट नहीं आता, क्योंकि वह उनके बल का मर्म जानता था।
English Translation:
Seeing the mountain coming towards him, Meghnad flew into the sky, abandoning his chariot, charioteer, and horses to perish. Hanuman ji repeatedly challenged Meghnad to a fight, but Meghnad did not approach Hanuman ji, knowing his formidable strength.
भावार्थ:
(तब) मेघनाद श्री रघुनाथजी के पास गया और उसने (उनके प्रति) अनेकों प्रकार के दुर्वचनों का प्रयोग किया। फिर उसने उन पर अस्त्र-शस्त्र तथा और सब हथियार चलाए। प्रभु ने खेल में ही सबको काटकर अलग कर दिया।
English Translation:
Meghnad then approached Lord Raghupati and hurled every kind of abuse at Him. He launched all types of weapons, both those activated with spells and those deadly in nature, at Shri Ram. The Lord, in a playful act, cut them asunder before they could reach Him.
भावार्थ:
श्री रामजी का प्रताप देखकर वह मूर्ख लज्जित हो गया और अनेकों प्रकार की माया करने लगा। जैसे कोई व्यक्ति छोटा सा साँप का बच्चा हाथ में लेकर गरुड़ को डरावे और उससे खेल करे।
English Translation:
Seeing the valour of the Lord, the fool felt angry and frustrated. He then began to practice his various illusionary powers, much like a person holding a small snake does antics with it, trying to scare the King of Birds, Garud.
भावार्थ:
शिवजी और ब्रह्माजी तक बड़े-छोटे (सभी) जिनकी अत्यंत बलवान् माया के वश में हैं, नीच बुद्धि निशाचर उनको अपनी माया दिखलाता है।
English Translation:
Whose potent illusory energy (Maya) holds sway over all, including Lord Shiv, Lord Brahma, and other big and small Demigods and realized individuals; to that very Lord, the foolish-minded demon was displaying his own illusory energy.
भावार्थ:
आकाश में चढ़कर वह बहुत से अंगारे बरसाने लगा। पृथ्वी से जल की धाराएँ प्रकट होने लगीं। अनेक प्रकार के पिशाच तथा पिशाचिनियाँ नाच-नाचकर ‘मारो, काटो’ की आवाज करने लगीं।
English Translation:
Meghnad climbed high into the sky and rained down many flaming pieces of rocks and lava. He created numerous water fountains erupting from the Earth. The ground and sky were filled with many demons and demonesses dancing and shouting, “Kill them, cut them all.”
भावार्थ:
वह कभी तो विष्टा, पीब, खून, बाल और हड्डियाँ बरसाता था और कभी बहुत से पत्थर फेंक देता था। फिर उसने धूल बरसाकर ऐसा अँधेरा कर दिया कि अपना ही पसारा हुआ हाथ नहीं सूझता था।
English Translation:
Sometimes he rained feces, pus, blood, hair, and bones, and at other times he hurled down many stones from the sky. Sometimes he would discharge so much dust that it became extremely dark, and one could not even see their own hands.
भावार्थ:
माया देखकर वानर अकुला उठे। वे सोचने लगे कि इस हिसाब से तो सबका मरण आ बना। यह कौतुक देखकर श्री रामजी मुस्कुराए। उन्होंने जान लिया कि सब वानर भयभीत हो गए हैं।
English Translation:
Seeing the Maya created by Meghnad, the monkeys felt very distressed. They all thought that at this rate, their days were numbered and they would soon die. Seeing the diabolical act of Meghnad, Shri Ram smiled, understanding at the same time that all the monkeys were afraid.
भावार्थ:
तब श्री रामजी ने एक ही बाण से सारी माया काट डाली, जैसे सूर्य अंधकार के समूह को हर लेता है। तदनन्तर उन्होंने कृपाभरी दृष्टि से वानर-भालुओं की ओर देखा, जिससे वे ऐसे प्रबल हो गए कि रण में रोकने पर भी नहीं रुकते थे।
English Translation:
Then, Lord Ram slashed the spell of the demonic Maya with a single arrow, just like the Sun dissipates a thick veil of darkness. He cast His gracious looks on the monkeys and bears, and they became so strong that they seemed unstoppable in the battle.
