भावार्थ:
श्री रामजी से आज्ञा माँगकर, अंगद आदि वानरों के साथ हाथों में धनुष-बाण लिए हुए श्री लक्ष्मणजी क्रुद्ध होकर चले॥52॥
English Translation:
Lakshman ji then bowed at Lord Ram’s feet. After receiving Ram ji’s permission, he went to fight with Meghnad in full fury, accompanied by Angad and other brave warriors, holding his bow and arrow in his hands.
भावार्थ:
उनके लाल नेत्र हैं, चौड़ी छाती और विशाल भुजाएँ हैं। हिमाचल पर्वत के समान उज्ज्वल (गौरवर्ण) शरीर कुछ ललाई लिए हुए है। इधर रावण ने भी बड़े-बड़े योद्धा भेजे, जो अनेकों अस्त्र-शस्त्र लेकर दौड़े॥1॥
English Translation:
His eyes were blood-red, and he had a massive chest and long arms. His complexion resembled the Himalayan mountain with a slight admixture of red. There, in the battlefield, the ten-headed Ravan sent many brave warriors who rushed forward with various types of missiles and weapons in their hands.
भावार्थ:
पर्वत, नख और वृक्ष रूपी हथियार धारण किए हुए वानर ‘श्री रामचंद्रजी की जय’ पुकारकर दौड़े। वानर और राक्षस सब जोड़ी से जोड़ी भिड़ गए। इधर और उधर दोनों ओर जय की इच्छा कम न थी (अर्थात् प्रबल थी)॥2॥
English Translation:
With mountains, claws, and trees for weapons, the monkeys rushed to meet the demons, shouting, “Victory to Shri Ram!” The armies from both sides clashed one on one with matching opponents. Both sides were equally eager for victory in the battle.
भावार्थ:
वानर उनको घूँसों और लातों से मारते हैं, दाँतों से काटते हैं। विजयशील वानर उन्हें मारकर फिर डाँटते भी हैं। ‘मारो, मारो, पकड़ो, पकड़ो, पकड़कर मार दो, सिर तोड़ दो और भुजाऐँ पकड़कर उखाड़ लो’॥3॥
English Translation:
The monkeys battered the demons with their fists and feet, and bit them with their teeth. The victorious monkeys repeatedly hit and admonished the demons, shouting, “Kill them, slay them, capture them, seize them, break their heads, hold their arms and rip them out.”
भावार्थ:
नवों खंडों में ऐसी आवाज भर रही है। प्रचण्ड रुण्ड (धड़) जहाँ-तहाँ दौड़ रहे हैं। आकाश में देवतागण यह कौतुक देख रहे हैं। उन्हें कभी खेद होता है और कभी आनंद॥4॥
English Translation:
Such sounds resonated throughout the nine divisions of the globe. Headless bodies sprinted furiously hither and thither. Witnessing this spectacle from the sky, the hosts of Demigods would feel joyful when Lord Ram’s army was winning and distressed when Ravan’s demon army was gaining the upper hand.
भावार्थ:
खून गड्ढों में भर-भरकर जम गया है और उस पर धूल उड़कर पड़ रही है (वह दृश्य ऐसा है) मानो अंगारों के ढेरों पर राख छा रही हो॥53॥
English Translation:
The potholes were filled with blood, and clouds of dust covered them, resembling the ashes of the dead over heaps of live coal and lava.
भावार्थ:
घायल वीर कैसे शोभित हैं, जैसे फूले हुए पलास के पेड़। लक्ष्मण और मेघनाद दोनों योद्धा अत्यंत क्रोध करके एक-दूसरे से भिड़ते हैं॥1॥
English Translation:
The wounded fighters, with their bodies battered and bloodied, glorified like sacred trees in full bloom with crimson-coloured flowers. The mighty fighters Lakshman ji and Meghnad battled each other with extreme rage.
भावार्थ:
एक-दूसरे को (कोई किसी को) जीत नहीं सकता। राक्षस छल-बल (माया) और अनीति (अधर्म) करता है, तब भगवान् अनन्तजी (लक्ष्मणजी) क्रोधित हुए और उन्होंने तुरंत उसके रथ को तोड़ डाला और सारथी को टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर दिया!॥2॥
English Translation:
Neither could overpower the other, so the demon resorted to deceitful tricks of strength and unfair means. Then Lakshman ji, the avatar of the Serpent God Shehsa, became furious and quickly destroyed Meghnad’s chariot, killing his charioteer.
भावार्थ:
शेषजी (लक्ष्मणजी) उस पर अनेक प्रकार से प्रहार करने लगे। राक्षस के प्राणमात्र शेष रह गए। रावणपुत्र मेघनाद ने मन में अनुमान किया कि अब तो प्राण संकट आ बना, ये मेरे प्राण हर लेंगे॥3॥
English Translation:
Lakshman ji inflicted numerous injuries on Meghnad, leaving the demon nearly dead. Then Ravan’s son, Meghnad, thought to himself that his life was in danger and that Lakshman ji would take his life away.
भावार्थ:
तब उसने वीरघातिनी शक्ति चलाई। वह तेजपूर्ण शक्ति लक्ष्मणजी की छाती में लगी। शक्ति लगने से उन्हें मूर्छा आ गई। तब मेघनाद भय छोड़कर उनके पास चला गया॥4॥
English Translation:
He then discharged his powerful magical spear, Shakti, at Lakshman ji. Shakti struck Lakshman ji in the heart, causing him to fall unconscious to the ground. Meghnad, shedding all fear, then went near Lakshman ji.
भावार्थ:
मेघनाद के समान सौ करोड़ (अगणित) योद्धा उन्हें उठा रहे हैं, परन्तु जगत् के आधार श्री शेषजी (लक्ष्मणजी) उनसे कैसे उठते? तब वे लजाकर चले गए॥54॥
English Translation:
Millions of brave warriors like Meghnad tried to lift Lakshman ji and take him to Lanka, but how could they lift an avatar of Sheshnag ji, the very support of the cosmos? Thus, being unsuccessful, they left in anger and shame.
भावार्थ:
(शिवजी कहते हैं-) हे गिरिजे! सुनो, (प्रलयकाल में) जिन (शेषनाग) के क्रोध की अग्नि चौदहों भुवनों को तुरंत ही जला डालती है और देवता, मनुष्य तथा समस्त चराचर (जीव) जिनकी सेवा करते हैं, उनको संग्राम में कौन जीत सकता है?॥1॥
English Translation:
Lord Shiv tells Goddess Parvati, “Listen, Girija, the fire of whose wrath burns to ashes all the fourteen spheres of the cosmos at the time of final dissolution, and who is worshipped by Demigods, men, and all animate and inanimate beings, can anyone defeat him in battle?
भावार्थ:
इस लीला को वही जान सकता है, जिस पर श्री रामजी की कृपा हो। संध्या होने पर दोनों ओर की सेनाएँ लौट पड़ीं, सेनापति अपनी-अपनी सेनाएँ संभालने लगे॥2॥
English Translation:
…This playful act can only be understood by those individuals upon whom Lord Ram has bestowed His grace.” It was evening, and both sides of the army divisions returned to their respective camps and began tending to their troops.
भावार्थ:
व्यापक, ब्रह्म, अजेय, संपूर्ण ब्रह्मांड के ईश्वर और करुणा की खान श्री रामचंद्रजी ने पूछा- लक्ष्मण कहाँ है? तब तक हनुमान् उन्हें ले आए। छोटे भाई को (इस दशा में) देखकर प्रभु ने बहुत ही दुःख माना॥3॥
English Translation:
The all-pervading Supreme Soul, the invincible Lord of the cosmos, the ocean of mercy, Shri Ram enquired about Lakshman ji. In the meantime, Hanuman ji brought Lakshman ji there. Seeing His younger brother unconscious, the Lord was extremely sad.
भावार्थ:
जाम्बवान् ने कहा- लंका में सुषेण वैद्य रहता है, उसे लाने के लिए किसको भेजा जाए? हनुमान्जी छोटा रूप धरकर गए और सुषेण को उसके घर समेत तुरंत ही उठा लाए॥4॥
English Translation:
Jambvant said, “Send someone and bring the physician named Sushen who lives in Lanka.” Hanuman ji then assumed a miniature form, quickly reached Lanka, and brought Sushen along with his home.
भावार्थ:
सुषेण ने आकर श्री रामजी के चरणारविन्दों में सिर नवाया। उसने पर्वत और औषध का नाम बताया, (और कहा कि) हे पवनपुत्र! औषधि लेने जाओ॥55॥
English Translation:
Sushen came and bowed at the lotus feet of Shri Ram. After assessing Shri Lakshman’s condition and making a diagnosis, he described the herb needed to make the medicine and the mountain in the Himalayas where it could be found. Sushen then requested Hanuman ji, “Go and retrieve it, O’ Son of the Wind God.”
भावार्थ:
श्री रामजी के चरणकमलों को हृदय में रखकर पवनपुत्र हनुमान्जी अपना बल बखानकर (अर्थात् मैं अभी लिए आता हूँ, ऐसा कहकर) चले। उधर एक गुप्तचर ने रावण को इस रहस्य की खबर दी। तब रावण कालनेमि के घर आया॥1॥
English Translation:
Invoking Shri Ram’s lotus feet in his heart, Hanuman ji expressed his determination and strength to reassure Lord Ram and everyone that he would get the herb in no time. The Son of the Wind God then departed. At the other end, a spy disclosed this secret to Ravan, who then went to his demon ally Kalnemi’s home.
भावार्थ:
रावण ने उसको सारा मर्म (हाल) बतलाया। कालनेमि ने सुना और बार-बार सिर पीटा (खेद प्रकट किया)। (उसने कहा-) तुम्हारे देखते-देखते जिसने नगर जला डाला, उसका मार्ग कौन रोक सकता है?॥2॥
English Translation:
Ravan told him about the entire incident, and upon hearing it, Kalnemi expressed distress by beating his head repeatedly. He said, “The one who burned your city before your eyes, who can obstruct his path?”
भावार्थ:
श्री रघुनाथजी का भजन करके तुम अपना कल्याण करो! हे नाथ! झूठी बकवाद छोड़ दो। नेत्रों को आनंद देने वाले नीलकमल के समान सुंदर श्याम शरीर को अपने हृदय में रखो॥3॥
English Translation:
…By worshiping Lord Ram, do yourself some good. O’ Master, leave your false boasting. Keep the lotus-like, blue-complexioned, charming, and handsome Shri Ram, the One who brings delight to everyone’s eyes, in your heart.
भावार्थ:
मैं-तू (भेद-भाव) और ममता रूपी मूढ़ता को त्याग दो। महामोह (अज्ञान) रूपी रात्रि में सो रहे हो, सो जाग उठो, जो काल रूपी सर्प का भी भक्षक है, कहीं स्वप्न में भी वह रण में जीता जा सकता है?॥4॥
English Translation:
…Dismiss the foolish notion of ‘I, me, and mine,’ and wake up from the night of gross infatuation. The One who devours the Serpent of Time, can you even dream of winning against Him in battle?”
भावार्थ:
उसकी ये बातें सुनकर रावण बहुत ही क्रोधित हुआ। तब कालनेमि ने मन में विचार किया कि (इसके हाथ से मरने की अपेक्षा) श्री रामजी के दूत के हाथ से ही मरूँ तो अच्छा है। यह दुष्ट तो पाप समूह में रत है॥56॥
English Translation:
Hearing Kalnemi’s words, Ravan was furious. Kalnemi then pondered in his heart, “It is better to die at the hands of Lord Ram’s messenger than at the hands of the wretched Ravan, who is engrossed in a multitude of sins.”
भावार्थ:
वह मन ही मन ऐसा कहकर चला और उसने मार्ग में माया रची। तालाब, मंदिर और सुंदर बाग बनाया। हनुमान्जी ने सुंदर आश्रम देखकर सोचा कि मुनि से पूछकर जल पी लूँ, जिससे थकावट दूर हो जाए॥1॥
English Translation:
Saying these words to himself, the demon departed. On his way, he created an illusionary lake, with a beautiful temple, and a lovely garden. The son of the Wind God saw this sacred-looking hermitage and thought to himself, “Let me seek the sage’s permission and drink some water, so that I may be relieved of my fatigue.”
भावार्थ:
राक्षस वहाँ कपट (से मुनि) का वेष बनाए विराजमान था। वह मूर्ख अपनी माया से मायापति के दूत को मोहित करना चाहता था। मारुति ने उसके पास जाकर मस्तक नवाया। वह श्री रामजी के गुणों की कथा कहने लगा॥2॥
English Translation:
The demon Kalnemi, disguised in the beautiful garb of a hermit, sought to delude the messenger of the Lord of Maya (illusion) Himself. The son of the Wind God approached the hermit and bowed his head before him. The demon (in the guise of a hermit) in turn began to recite Lord Ram’s praises.
भावार्थ:
(वह बोला-) रावण और राम में महान् युद्ध हो रहा है। रामजी जीतेंगे, इसमें संदेह नहीं है। हे भाई! मैं यहाँ रहता हुआ ही सब देख रहा हूँ। मुझे ज्ञानदृष्टि का बहुत बड़ा बल है॥3॥
English Translation:
He said, “A fierce battle between Ravan and Lord Ram is underway. In the end, Lord Ram will be victorious, there is no doubt about this. O’ Brother, while sitting here, I can see everything through the supreme strength of my eyes of knowledge.”
भावार्थ:
हनुमान्जी ने उससे जल माँगा, तो उसने कमण्डलु दे दिया। हनुमान्जी ने कहा- थोड़े जल से मैं तृप्त नहीं होने का। तब वह बोला- तालाब में स्नान करके तुरंत लौट आओ तो मैं तुम्हे दीक्षा दूँ, जिससे तुम ज्ञान प्राप्त करो॥4॥
English Translation:
Upon asking for water, the hermit offered Hanuman ji his water pot. Hanuman ji replied, “My thirst cannot be quenched with a small quantity of water.” The hermit then said, “Go take a dip in the lake and quickly come back. I will then initiate you, and you will gain spiritual insight.”
भावार्थ:
तालाब में प्रवेश करते ही एक मगरी ने अकुलाकर उसी समय हनुमान्जी का पैर पकड़ लिया। हनुमान्जी ने उसे मार डाला। तब वह दिव्य देह धारण करके विमान पर चढ़कर आकाश को चली॥57॥
English Translation:
As soon as Hanuman ji entered the lake, a female crocodile seized his foot with great excitement. Hanuman ji swiftly killed it, after which she transformed into a celestial damsel in divine form. She mounted an aerial vehicle which had arrived to take her to Heaven.
भावार्थ:
(उसने कहा-) हे वानर! मैं तुम्हारे दर्शन से पापरहित हो गई। हे तात! श्रेष्ठ मुनि का शाप मिट गया। हे कपि! यह मुनि नहीं है, घोर निशाचर है। मेरा वचन सत्य मानो॥1॥
English Translation:
She said, “By your very sight, O’ Dear monkey, I got rid of my sins, and the curse of a realized saint, which had turned me into a crocodile, has now come to an end. The hermit who just told you to take a dip in this lake is no saint but a formidable demon. O’ Hanuman, believe my words to be true.”
भावार्थ:
ऐसा कहकर ज्यों ही वह अप्सरा गई, त्यों ही हनुमान्जी निशाचर के पास गए। हनुमान्जी ने कहा- हे मुनि! पहले गुरुदक्षिणा ले लीजिए। पीछे आप मुझे मंत्र दीजिएगा॥2॥
English Translation:
As soon as the celestial damsel left after uttering these words, Hanuman ji went near the demon hermit and said, “O’ Sage, first accept a gift from me as my spiritual preceptor, and after that, you can impart to me your sacred knowledge.”
भावार्थ:
हनुमान्जी ने उसके सिर को पूँछ में लपेटकर उसे पछाड़ दिया। मरते समय उसने अपना (राक्षसी) शरीर प्रकट किया। उसने राम-राम कहकर प्राण छोड़े। यह (उसके मुँह से राम-राम का उच्चारण) सुनकर हनुमान्जी मन में हर्षित होकर चले॥3॥
English Translation:
Hanuman ji then wrapped his tail around the hermit, smashed him hard on the ground, and killed him. At the moment of his death, the hermit reverted to his original demon form and muttered, “Ram, Ram” before dying. Hearing this, Hanuman ji rejoiced in his heart and then continued on his journey.
भावार्थ:
उन्होंने पर्वत को देखा, पर औषध न पहचान सके। तब हनुमान्जी ने एकदम से पर्वत को ही उखाड़ लिया। पर्वत लेकर हनुमान्जी रात ही में आकाश मार्ग से दौड़ चले और अयोध्यापुरी के ऊपर पहुँच गए॥4॥
English Translation:
Hanuman ji then saw the mountain that matched the description given by the physician Sushen but could not identify the herb. Without losing any time, Hanuman ji quickly uprooted the entire mountain. Holding the mountain in his hand, he rushed back through the air while it was still night and happened to fly over the city of Ayodhya.
