• कतहुँ होइ निसिचर सैं भेटा।
  प्रान लेहिं एक एक चपेटा॥
  बहु प्रकार गिरि कानन हेरहिं।
  कोउ मुनि मिलइ ताहि सब घेरहिं॥1॥

भावार्थ:
कहीं किसी राक्षस से भेंट हो जाती है, तो एक-एक चपत में ही उसके प्राण ले लेते हैं। पर्वतों और वनों को बहुत प्रकार से खोज रहे हैं। कोई मुनि मिल जाता है तो पता पूछने के लिए उसे सब घेर लेते हैं॥1॥

English Translation:
If they encountered any demons along the way, they would simply eliminate them with a single slap. They searched mountains and forests extensively. If they met any sage, they would surround him and inquire about Sita ji.

• लागि तृषा अतिसय अकुलाने।
  मिलइ न जल घन गहन भुलाने॥
  मन हनुमान्‌ कीन्ह अनुमाना।
  मरन चहत सब बिनु जल पाना॥2॥

भावार्थ:
इतने में ही सबको अत्यंत प्यास लगी, जिससे सब अत्यंत ही व्याकुल हो गए, किंतु जल कहीं नहीं मिला। घने जंगल में सब भुला गए। हनुमान्‌जी ने मन में अनुमान किया कि जल पिए बिना सब लोग मरना ही चाहते हैं॥2॥

English Translation:
Feeling extremely thirsty and restless, they were unable to find water anywhere and lost their way in the dense forest. Hanuman ji contemplated to himself that without water to drink, everyone would perish.

• चढ़ि गिरि सिखर चहूँ दिसि देखा।
  भूमि बिबर एक कौतुक पेखा॥
  चक्रबाक बक हंस उड़ाहीं।
  बहुतक खग प्रबिसहिं तेहि माहीं॥3॥

भावार्थ:
उन्होंने पहाड़ की चोटी पर चढ़कर चारों ओर देखा तो पृथ्वी के अंदर एक गुफा में उन्हें एक कौतुक (आश्चर्य) दिखाई दिया। उसके ऊपर चकवे, बगुले और हंस उड़ रहे हैं और बहुत से पक्षी उसमें प्रवेश कर रहे हैं॥3॥

English Translation:
He climbed to the top of a hill and surveyed in all four directions. He witnessed an unusual phenomenon within a cavity in the ground, where numerous chakwas, herons, swans, and various other birds were hovering, with many others making their way into the cave.

• गिरि ते उतरि पवनसुत आवा।
  सब कहुँ लै सोइ बिबर देखावा॥
  आगें कै हनुमंतहि लीन्हा।
  पैठे बिबर बिलंबु न कीन्हा॥4॥

भावार्थ:
पवन कुमार हनुमान्‌जी पर्वत से उतर आए और सबको ले जाकर उन्होंने वह गुफा दिखलाई। सबने हनुमान्‌जी को आगे कर लिया और वे गुफा में घुस गए, देर नहीं की॥4॥

English Translation:
Hanuman ji descended the hill, took them all, and showed them the cave. In no time they all entered the cave with Hanuman ji leading the way.

• दीख जाइ उपबन बर सर बिगसित बहु कंज।
  मंदिर एक रुचिर तहँ बैठि नारि तप पुंज॥24॥

भावार्थ:
अंदर जाकर उन्होंने एक उत्तम उपवन (बगीचा) और तालाब देखा, जिसमें बहुत से कमल खिले हुए हैं। वहीं एक सुंदर मंदिर है, जिसमें एक तपोमूर्ति स्त्री बैठी है॥24॥

English Translation:
They went in and saw a beautiful garden and a pond adorned with many fully blossomed lotuses. There stood a charming temple nearby, where a woman, who was an embodiment of penance, was seated.

• दूरि ते ताहि सबन्हि सिरु नावा।
  पूछें निज बृत्तांत सुनावा॥
  तेहिं तब कहा करहु जल पाना।
  खाहु सुरस सुंदर फल नाना॥1॥

भावार्थ:
दूर से ही सबने उसे सिर नवाया और पूछने पर अपना सब वृत्तांत कह सुनाया। तब उसने कहा- जलपान करो और भाँति-भाँति के रसीले सुंदर फल खाओ॥1॥

English Translation:
From a distance, everyone bowed their heads to her, and upon inquiring, they narrated the entire story. She then said, “Go, drink water, and consume lovely and juicy fruits of various kinds.”

• मज्जनु कीन्ह मधुर फल खाए।
  तासु निकट पुनि सब चलि आए॥
  तेहिं सब आपनि कथा सुनाई।
  मैं अब जाब जहाँ रघुराई॥2॥

भावार्थ:
(आज्ञा पाकर) सबने स्नान किया, मीठे फल खाए और फिर सब उसके पास चले आए। तब उसने अपनी सब कथा कह सुनाई (और कहा-) मैं अब वहाँ जाऊँगी जहाँ श्री रघुनाथजी हैं॥2॥

English Translation:
After bathing and enjoying sweet fruits, the monkeys approached her again. She then shared her story with them, saying, “I will now go where the Chief of Raghus is…”

• मूदहु नयन बिबर तजि जाहू।
  पैहहु सीतहि जनि पछिताहू॥
  नयन मूदि पुनि देखहिं बीरा।
  ठाढ़े सकल सिंधु कें तीरा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
तुम लोग आँखें मूँद लो और गुफा को छोड़कर बाहर जाओ। तुम सीताजी को पा जाओगे, पछताओ नहीं (निराश न होओ)। आँखें मूँदकर फिर जब आँखें खोलीं तो सब वीर क्या देखते हैं कि सब समुद्र के तीर पर खड़े हैं॥3॥

English Translation:
…Now, close your eyes, and you will find yourself outside this cave. Do not feel disheartened, you will find Sita Ji.” After closing their eyes and then opening them, the brave monkeys found themselves standing on the shore of the sea.

• सो पुनि गई जहाँ रघुनाथा।
  जाइ कमल पद नाएसि माथा॥
  नाना भाँति बिनय तेहिं कीन्हीं।
  अनपायनी भगति प्रभु दीन्हीं॥4॥

भावार्थ:
और वह स्वयं वहाँ गई जहाँ श्री रघुनाथजी थे। उसने जाकर प्रभु के चरण कमलों में मस्तक नवाया और बहुत प्रकार से विनती की। प्रभु ने उसे अपनी अनपायिनी (अचल) भक्ति दी॥4॥

English Translation:
The hermitess then went to where Shri Raghunath was. She bowed her head at the lotus feet of the Lord and made humble supplications to Him in many ways. The Lord then granted her the boon of His everlasting devotion.

• बदरीबन कहुँ सो गई प्रभु अग्या धरि सीस।
  उर धरि राम चरन जुग जे बंदत अज ईस॥25॥

भावार्थ:
प्रभु की आज्ञा सिर पर धारण कर और श्री रामजी के युगल चरणों को, जिनकी ब्रह्मा और महेश भी वंदना करते हैं, हृदय में धारण कर वह (स्वयंप्रभा) बदरिकाश्रम को चली गई॥25॥

English Translation:
She proceeded to the Badrinath forest in the Himalayan mountains after reverently following Shri Ram’s orders and installing His feet in her heart, which are worshipped by Lord Brahma and Lord Shiv too.

• इहाँ बिचारहिं कपि मन माहीं।
  बीती अवधि काज कछु नाहीं॥
  सब मिलि कहहिं परस्पर बाता।
  बिनु सुधि लएँ करब का भ्राता॥1॥

भावार्थ:
यहाँ वानरगण मन में विचार कर रहे हैं कि अवधि तो बीत गई, पर काम कुछ न हुआ। सब मिलकर आपस में बात करने लगे कि हे भाई! अब तो सीताजी की खबर लिए बिना लौटकर भी क्या करेंगे!॥1॥

English Translation:
On this side, standing on the seashore, the monkeys contemplated in their hearts, “The time-limit (given by Sugriv) has expired, and we have not yet been able to accomplish our task.” Everyone gathered and said to each other, “Now, without any news of Sita ji, what will we do even if we return?”

• कह अंगद लोचन भरि बारी।
  दुहुँ प्रकार भइ मृत्यु हमारी॥
  इहाँ न सुधि सीता कै पाई।
  उहाँ गएँ मारिहि कपिराई॥2॥

भावार्थ:
अंगद ने नेत्रों में जल भरकर कहा कि दोनों ही प्रकार से हमारी मृत्यु हुई। यहाँ तो सीताजी की सुध नहीं मिली और वहाँ जाने पर वानरराज सुग्रीव मार डालेंगे॥2॥

English Translation:
Angad, with tears welling up in his eyes, expressed, “Our death is inevitable in both scenarios; here, we are unable to gather any news of Sita Ji, and upon return, the monkey King Sugriv will definitely kill us all…”

• पिता बधे पर मारत मोही।
  राखा राम निहोर न ओही॥
  पुनि पुनि अंगद कह सब पाहीं।
  मरन भयउ कछु संसय नाहीं॥3॥

भावार्थ:
वे तो पिता के वध होने पर ही मुझे मार डालते। श्री रामजी ने ही मेरी रक्षा की, इसमें सुग्रीव का कोई एहसान नहीं है। अंगद बार-बार सबसे कह रहे हैं कि अब मरण हुआ, इसमें कुछ भी संदेह नहीं है॥3॥

English Translation:
…Sugriv would have killed me at the time of my father’s death had Lord Ram not protected me; hence, I owe no gratitude to Sugriv.” Angad told everyone repeatedly that their death was imminent, and that there was no doubt about it.

• अंगद बचन सुन कपि बीरा।
  बोलि न सकहिं नयन बह नीरा॥
  छन एक सोच मगन होइ रहे।
  पुनि अस बचन कहत सब भए॥4॥

भावार्थ:
वानर वीर अंगद के वचन सुनते हैं, किंतु कुछ बोल नहीं सकते। उनके नेत्रों से जल बह रहा है। एक क्षण के लिए सब सोच में मग्न हो रहे। फिर सब ऐसा वचन कहने लगे-॥4॥

English Translation:
Hearing Angad’s words, all the brave monkeys were unable to speak, and tears welled up in their eyes. For a fraction of a second, they were lost in deep thought, and then they spoke these words…

• हम सीता कै सुधि लीन्हें बिना।
  नहिं जैहैं जुबराज प्रबीना॥
  अस कहि लवन सिंधु तट जाई।
  बैठे कपि सब दर्भ डसाई॥5॥

भावार्थ:
हे सुयोग्य युवराज! हम लोग सीताजी की खोज लिए बिना नहीं लौटेंगे। ऐसा कहकर लवणसागर के तट पर जाकर सब वानर कुश बिछाकर बैठ गए॥5॥

English Translation:
…”O’ Extremely wise Prince, we will not return until we find some news of Sita ji.” Uttering these words, they went to the shore of the salty ocean and sat down after spreading grass.

• जामवंत अंगद दुख देखी।
  कहीं कथा उपदेस बिसेषी॥
  तात राम कहुँ नर जनि मानहु।
  निर्गुन ब्रह्म अजित अज जानहु॥6॥

भावार्थ:
जाम्बवान्‌ ने अंगद का दुःख देखकर विशेष उपदेश की कथाएँ कहीं। (वे बोले-) हे तात! श्री रामजी को मनुष्य न मानो, उन्हें निर्गुण ब्रह्म, अजेय और अजन्मा समझो॥6॥

English Translation:
Observing Angad’s distress, Jambvant delivered a profoundly meaningful discourse. He said, “O’ Son, one should not consider Ram as a mere human. One should recognize Him as the Supreme Soul who is devoid of material form and attributes, is invincible, and unborn…

• हम सब सेवक अति बड़भागी।
  संतत सगुन ब्रह्म अनुरागी॥7॥

भावार्थ:
हम सब सेवक अत्यंत बड़भागी हैं, जो निरंतर सगुण ब्रह्म (श्री रामजी) में प्रीति रखते हैं॥7॥

English Translation:
…We, His servants, are extremely fortunate to be constantly devoted to Shri Ram, who is the same Supreme Soul that has manifested in a divine form…

• निज इच्छाँ प्रभु अवतरइ सुर मह गो द्विज लागि।
  सगुन उपासक संग तहँ रहहिं मोच्छ सब त्यागि॥26॥

भावार्थ:
देवता, पृथ्वी, गो और ब्राह्मणों के लिए प्रभु अपनी इच्छा से (किसी कर्मबंधन से नहीं) अवतार लेते हैं। वहाँ सगुणोपासक (भक्तगण सालोक्य, सामीप्य, सारुप्य, सार्ष्टि और सायुज्य) सब प्रकार के मोक्षों को त्यागकर उनकी सेवा में साथ रहते हैं॥26॥

English Translation:
Of His own free will, the Lord incarnates for the welfare of Demigods, Earth, Cows, and Brahmins. Devotees who worship the Lord’s divine form choose to stay with Him, renouncing all forms of liberation, when the Lord takes an avatar.

• एहि बिधि कथा कहहिं बहु भाँती।
  गिरि कंदराँ सुनी संपाती॥
  बाहेर होइ देखि बहु कीसा।
  मोहि अहार दीन्ह जगदीसा॥1॥

भावार्थ:
इस प्रकार जाम्बवान्‌ बहुत प्रकार से कथाएँ कह रहे हैं। इनकी बातें पर्वत की कन्दरा में सम्पाती ने सुनीं। बाहर निकलकर उसने बहुत से वानर देखे। (तब वह बोला-) जगदीश्वर ने मुझको घर बैठे बहुत सा आहार भेज दिया!॥1॥

English Translation:
In this manner, Jambvant recited numerous discourses. Sampati, a vulture and the brother of Jatayu, who was sitting in a nearby cave, overheard their conversation. He emerged from the cave and saw numerous monkeys. He said, “The Lord of the cosmos has provided me with food.”

• आजु सबहि कहँ भच्छन करऊँ।
  दिन बहु चले अहार बिनु मरऊँ॥
  कबहुँ न मिल भरि उदर अहारा।
  आजु दीन्ह बिधि एकहिं बारा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
आज इन सबको खा जाऊँगा। बहुत दिन बीत गए, भोजन के बिना मर रहा था। पेटभर भोजन कभी नहीं मिलता। आज विधाता ने एक ही बार में बहुत सा भोजन दे दिया॥2॥

English Translation:
Today, I will devour them all. I have been starving for many days, unable to find a satisfying meal. The Lord has blessed me today with an abundance of food all at once.

• डरपे गीध बचन सुनि काना।
  अब भा मरन सत्य हम जाना॥
  कपि सब उठे गीध कहँ देखी।
  जामवंत मन सोच बिसेषी॥3॥

भावार्थ:
गीध के वचन कानों से सुनते ही सब डर गए कि अब सचमुच ही मरना हो गया। यह हमने जान लिया। फिर उस गीध (सम्पाती) को देखकर सब वानर उठ खड़े हुए। जाम्बवान्‌ के मन में विशेष सोच हुआ॥3॥

English Translation:
Upon hearing the vulture’s words, the monkeys trembled with fear, thinking, “Now we know that our death is certain.” Seeing the vulture, all the monkeys stood up, and Jambvant felt deeply perturbed in his heart.

• कह अंगद बिचारि मन माहीं।
  धन्य जटायू सम कोउ नाहीं॥
  राम काज कारन तनु त्यागी।
  हरि पुर गयउ परम बड़भागी॥4॥

भावार्थ:
अंगद ने मन में विचार कर कहा- अहा! जटायु के समान धन्य कोई नहीं है। श्री रामजी के कार्य के लिए शरीर छोड़कर वह परम बड़भागी भगवान्‌ के परमधाम को चला गया॥4॥

English Translation:
After contemplating in his heart, Angad said, “Ah! There is no one as blessed as Jatayu, who sacrificed his life in the service of Shri Ram and ascended to Lord Hari’s abode; indeed, he was extremely fortunate.”

• सुनि खग हरष सोक जुत बानी।
  आवा निकट कपिन्ह भय मानी॥
  तिन्हहि अभय करि पूछेसि जाई।
  कथा सकल तिन्ह ताहि सुनाई॥5॥

भावार्थ:
हर्ष और शोक से युक्त वाणी (समाचार) सुनकर वह पक्षी (सम्पाती) वानरों के पास आया। वानर डर गए। उनको अभय करके (अभय वचन देकर) उसने पास जाकर जटायु का वृत्तांत पूछा, तब उन्होंने सारी कथा उसे कह सुनाई॥5॥

English Translation:
Upon hearing Angad’s words, which were both joyful (full of praise for Sampati’s brother, Jatayu) and sorrowful (as Jatayu was no longer alive), Sampati drew closer. The monkeys felt fearful as he approached. Assuring them of safety, he asked the monkeys about his younger brother Jatayu, and they narrated the entire story to him.

• सुनि संपाति बंधु कै करनी।
  रघुपति महिमा बहुबिधि बरनी॥6॥

भावार्थ:
भाई जटायु की करनी सुनकर सम्पाती ने बहुत प्रकार से श्री रघुनाथजी की महिमा वर्णन की॥6॥

English Translation:
Upon hearing the exploits of his brother and how the Lord had personally performed his last rites, Sampati glorified Lord Ram in many ways.

• मोहि लै जाहु सिंधुतट देउँ तिलांजलि ताहि।
  बचन सहाइ करबि मैं पैहहु खोजहु जाहि॥27॥

भावार्थ:
(उसने कहा-) मुझे समुद्र के किनारे ले चलो, मैं जटायु को तिलांजलि दे दूँ। इस सेवा के बदले मैं तुम्हारी वचन से सहायता करूँगा (अर्थात्‌ सीताजी कहाँ हैं सो बतला दूँगा), जिसे तुम खोज रहे हो उसे पा जाओगे॥27॥

English Translation:
Sampati said, “Now take me to the seashore and so that I can perform the last rites of my brother. I will provide verbal assistance for this favour, and in doing so, you will successfully locate the person you are searching for.”

• अनुज क्रिया करि सागर तीरा।
  कहि निज कथा सुनहु कपि बीरा॥
  हम द्वौ बंधु प्रथम तरुनाई।
  गगन गए रबि निकट उड़ाई॥1॥

भावार्थ:
समुद्र के तीर पर छोटे भाई जटायु की क्रिया (श्राद्ध आदि) करके सम्पाती अपनी कथा कहने लगा- हे वीर वानरों! सुनो, हम दोनों भाई उठती जवानी में एक बार आकाश में उड़कर सूर्य के निकट चले गए॥1॥

English Translation:
After conducting the last rites for his younger brother at the seashore, Sampati began narrating his tale. He said, “Listen, O’ Monkey champions, during the peak of our adolescence, my brother and I soared through the sky and approached close to the Sun.”

• तेज न सहि सक सो फिरि आवा।
  मैं अभिमानी रबि निअरावा॥
  जरे पंख अति तेज अपारा।
  परेउँ भूमि करि घोर चिकारा॥2॥

भावार्थ:
वह (जटायु) तेज नहीं सह सका, इससे लौट आया (किंतु), मैं अभिमानी था इसलिए सूर्य के पास चला गया। अत्यंत अपार तेज से मेरे पंख जल गए। मैं बड़े जोर से चीख मारकर जमीन पर गिर पड़ा॥2॥

English Translation:
Jatayu couldn’t withstand the intense heat of the Sun, so he turned back. Driven by my own ego, I approached the Sun. The intense heat scorched my feathers, and I fell to the ground with a piercing scream.

• मुनि एक नाम चंद्रमा ओही।
  लागी दया देखि करि मोही॥
  बहु प्रकार तेहिं ग्यान सुनावा।
  देहजनित अभिमान छुड़ावा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
वहाँ चंद्रमा नाम के एक मुनि थे। मुझे देखकर उन्हें बड़ी दया लगी। उन्होंने बहुत प्रकार से मुझे ज्ञान सुनाया और मेरे देहजनित (देह संबंधी) अभिमान को छुड़ा दिया॥3॥

English Translation:
In that place, there was a sage named Chandrama. Witnessing my distressed state, he felt compassion. He imparted numerous discourses and assisted me in shedding the ego that had stemmed from my attachment to my own body.

• त्रेताँ ब्रह्म मनुज तनु धरिही।
  तासु नारि निसिचर पति हरिही॥
  तासु खोज पठइहि प्रभु दूता।
  तिन्हहि मिलें तैं होब पुनीता॥4॥

भावार्थ:
(उन्होंने कहा-) त्रेतायुग में साक्षात्‌ परब्रह्म मनुष्य शरीर धारण करेंगे। उनकी स्त्री को राक्षसों का राजा हर ले जाएगा। उसकी खोज में प्रभु दूत भेजेंगे। उनसे मिलने पर तू पवित्र हो जाएगा॥4॥

English Translation:
The sage had conveyed to me, “In the Treta era, the Supreme Lord will incarnate as a human, and the king of demons will abduct His wife. In His quest for Her, the Lord will send his spies, and meeting them will result in the removal of all sins, leading to your purification.”

• जमिहहिं पंख करसि जनि चिंता।
  तिन्हहि देखाइ देहेसु तैं सीता॥
  मुनि कइ गिरा सत्य भइ आजू।
  सुनि मम बचन करहु प्रभु काजू॥5॥

भावार्थ:
और तेरे पंख उग आएँगे, चिंता न कर। उन्हें तू सीताजी को दिखा देना। मुनि की वह वाणी आज सत्य हुई। अब मेरे वचन सुनकर तुम प्रभु का कार्य करो॥5॥

English Translation:
And your feathers will grow back, don’t worry. Show them where Sita ji is. Today the prediction of the sage has come true. Now, listen to my words and embark on the Lord’s mission.

• गिरि त्रिकूट ऊपर बस लंका।
  तहँ रह रावन सहज असंका॥
  तहँ असोक उपबन जहँ रहई।
  सीता बैठि सोच रत अहई॥6॥

भावार्थ:
त्रिकूट पर्वत पर लंका बसी हुई है। वहाँ स्वभाव से ही निडर रावण रहता है। वहाँ अशोक नाम का उपवन (बगीचा) है, जहाँ सीताजी रहती हैं। (इस समय भी) वे सोच में मग्न बैठी हैं॥6॥

English Translation:
Atop Trikut mountain stands the city of Lanka, where the naturally fearless Ravan resides. There in a garden named Ashok, Sita ji is staying, and even right now She is sitting there lost in deep distress.

• मैं देखउँ तुम्ह नाहीं गीधहि दृष्टि अपार।
  बूढ़ भयउँ न त करतेउँ कछुक सहाय तुम्हार॥28॥

भावार्थ:
मैं उन्हें देख रहा हूँ, तुम नहीं देख सकते, क्योंकि गीध की दृष्टि अपार होती है (बहुत दूर तक जाती है)। क्या करूँ? मैं बूढ़ा हो गया, नहीं तो तुम्हारी कुछ तो सहायता अवश्य करता॥28॥

English Translation:
I can see Her, but you all cannot see because the eyesight of vultures is boundless. I have grown old now; otherwise, I would have rendered some help to you.
