मेरा भाग्य छोटा है और इच्छा बहुत बड़ी है, परन्तु मुझे एक विश्वास है कि इसे सुनकर सज्जन सभी सुख पावेंगे और दुष्ट हँसी उड़ावेंगे।
English Translation:
I may not be lucky, but I possess a deep desire and unwavering faith. I believe my poetry will bring joy to the saintly, while the wicked will mock it.
भावार्थ:
दुष्टों के हँसने से मेरा हित ही होगा। मधुर कण्ठ वाली कोयल को कौए कठोर कहते हैं। जैसे बगुले हंस को और मेंढक पपीहे को हँसते हैं, वैसे ही मलिन मन वाले दुष्ट निर्मल वाणी को हँसते हैं।
English Translation:
The ridicule of evil-minded people will only benefit me in its own way. Just as crows fail to appreciate the melodious song of the cuckoo, and swans mock herons, or frogs make fun of the papaya bird, in the same way, sinful individuals mock those who speak with kindness and sweetness.
भावार्थ:
जो न तो कविता के रसिक हैं और न जिनका श्री रामचन्द्रजी के चरणों में प्रेम है, उनके लिए भी यह कविता सुखद हास्यरस का काम देगी। प्रथम तो यह भाषा की रचना है, दूसरे मेरी बुद्धि भोली है, इससे यह हँसने के योग्य ही है, हँसने में उन्हें कोई दोष नहीं।
English Translation:
For those who lack appreciation for poetry or have no devotion to the lotus feet of Shri Ram, my poetry will simply serve as an enjoyable comedy. Firstly, it is composed in the local Awadhi language, and secondly, I am dull-witted, making this poetry a natural target for ridicule. They cannot be blamed for mocking it.
भावार्थ:
जिन्हें न तो प्रभु के चरणों में प्रेम है और न अच्छी समझ ही है, उनको यह कथा सुनने में फीकी लगेगी। जिनकी श्री हरि (भगवान विष्णु) और श्री हर (भगवान शिव) के चरणों में प्रीति है और जिनकी बुद्धि कुतर्क करने वाली नहीं है (जो श्री हरि-हर में भेद की या ऊँच-नीच की कल्पना नहीं करते), उन्हें श्री रघुनाथजी की यह कथा मीठी लगेगी।
English Translation:
For those who lack love for the lotus feet of Shri Ram or do not possess a refined intellect, my story will seem tasteless. However, for those who cherish the lotus feet of Lord Ram and Lord Shiv, and whose minds are free from scepticism and duality (seeing no difference between them), the tale of Shri Ram, the best among the Raghus, will be profoundly sweet and delightful.
भावार्थ:
सज्जनगण इस कथा को अपने जी में श्री रामजी की भक्ति से भूषित जानकर सुंदर वाणी से सराहना करते हुए सुनेंगे। मैं न तो कवि हूँ, न वाक्य रचना में ही कुशल हूँ, मैं तो सब कलाओं तथा सब विद्याओं से रहित हूँ।
English Translation:
The saintly people will see my poetry as adorned with devotion to Shri Ram and will praise it with their sweet voices. I am neither a poet nor skilled with words. I possess no remarkable talents or formal education.
भावार्थ:
नाना प्रकार के अक्षर, अर्थ और अलंकार, अनेक प्रकार की छंद रचना, भावों और रसों के अपार भेद और कविता के भाँति-भाँति के गुण-दोष होते हैं।
English Translation:
Poetry, like a woman adorned with jewellery, is enhanced by various elements that add to its beauty. These include the artful crafting of prose, the composition of verse, the evocation of emotions, the use of symbolism, and the careful structuring of ideas. Poetry encompasses a wide range of perfections and imperfections.
भावार्थ:
इनमें से काव्य सम्बन्धी एक भी बात का ज्ञान मुझमें नहीं है, यह मैं कोरे कागज पर लिखकर (शपथपूर्वक) सत्य-सत्य कहता हूँ।
English Translation:
I can confidently declare, even on a blank piece of paper, that I possess no poetic wisdom.
भावार्थ:
मेरी रचना सब गुणों से रहित है, इसमें बस, जगत्प्रसिद्ध एक गुण है। उसे विचारकर अच्छी बुद्धिवाले पुरुष, जिनके निर्मल ज्ञान है, इसको सुनेंगे।
English Translation:
My poetry may lack merit, but it possesses one world-renowned quality. Because of this, individuals with pure and noble minds and intellect will be inclined to listen to it.
भावार्थ:
इसमें श्री रघुनाथजी का उदार नाम है, जो अत्यन्त पवित्र है, वेद-पुराणों का सार है, कल्याण का भवन है और अमंगलों को हरने वाला है, जिसे पार्वतीजी सहित भगवान शिवजी सदा जपा करते हैं।
English Translation:
The gracious name of Shri Ram, the Lord of the Raghu dynasty, graces this poetry. His sacred and divine name encapsulates the essence of the Vedas and Puranas. It is a fountain of all auspiciousness, dispelling every trace of evil. Lord Shiv, the destroyer of the demon Tripura, unceasingly chants this holy name, joined by Parvati ji.
भावार्थ:
जो अच्छे कवि के द्वारा रची हुई बड़ी अनूठी कविता है, वह भी राम नाम के बिना शोभा नहीं पाती। जैसे चन्द्रमा के समान मुख वाली सुंदर स्त्री सब प्रकार से सुसज्जित होने पर भी वस्त्र के बिना शोभा नहीं देती।
English Translation:
Even the finest poem, crafted by the most skilled poets, lacks true beauty without the name of Lord Ram, much like a beautifully adorned woman with a Moon-like face appears incomplete without her clothing.
भावार्थ:
इसके विपरीत, कुकवि की रची हुई सब गुणों से रहित कविता को भी, राम के नाम एवं यश से अंकित जानकर, बुद्धिमान लोग आदरपूर्वक कहते और सुनते हैं, क्योंकि संतजन भौंरे की भाँति गुण ही को ग्रहण करने वाले होते हैं।
English Translation:
A poem composed by unknown poets, lacking any artistic merit, gains respect when it includes the name and glory of Lord Ram. Intelligent and virtuous people will listen to it with reverence, for saintly souls focus only on goodness, just as a bee extracts nectar from flowers.
भावार्थ:
यद्यपि मेरी इस रचना में कविता का एक भी रस नहीं है, तथापि इसमें श्री रामजी का प्रताप प्रकट है। मेरे मन में यही एक भरोसा है। भले संग से भला, किसने बड़प्पन नहीं पाया?
English Translation:
Though my poem lacks poetic excellence, it carries the glory of Lord Ram. I hold a firm belief in my heart, after all, who has not been elevated by good company?
भावार्थ:
धुआँ भी अगर के संग से सुगंधित होकर अपने स्वाभाविक कड़ुवेपन को छोड़ देता है। मेरी कविता अवश्य भद्दी है, परन्तु इसमें जगत का कल्याण करने वाली रामकथा रूपी उत्तम वस्तु का वर्णन किया गया है।
English Translation:
Just as smoke sheds its natural bitterness and becomes fragrant in the company of aloe wood, similarly, though my poetry is unrefined, it describes something truly beautiful, the glory of Lord Ram. This tale of Lord Ram will bring auspiciousness to the entire world.
भावार्थ:
तुलसीदासजी कहते हैं कि श्री रघुनाथजी की कथा कल्याण करने वाली और कलियुग के पापों को हरने वाली है। मेरी इस भद्दी कविता रूपी नदी की चाल पवित्र जल वाली नदी (गंगाजी) की चाल की भाँति टेढ़ी है। प्रभु श्री रघुनाथजी के सुंदर यश के संग से यह कविता सुंदर तथा सज्जनों के मन को भाने वाली हो जाएगी।
English Translation:
The tale of the Lord of the Raghu dynasty will usher in all auspiciousness and cleanse the sins of Kaliyug. Though my composition flows unevenly, much like the meandering Ganga river, it is made beautiful by the glorious fame of Lord Ram. This blend will delight the hearts of saintly people. Just as the ash from the cremation ground adorning the body of Lord Shiv becomes sacred and purifies through mere meditation, so too will this humble composition radiate beauty and piety.
भावार्थ:
श्री रामजी के यश के संग से मेरी कविता सभी को अत्यन्त प्रिय लगेगी। जैसे मलय पर्वत के संग से काष्ठमात्र (चंदन बनकर) वंदनीय हो जाता है, फिर क्या कोई काठ (की तुच्छता) का विचार करता है?
English Translation:
Enriched with the fame of Lord Ram, my composition will appear pleasing to all, just as the transformation of ordinary wood into the revered sandalwood tree upon association with the Malaya mountain is never questioned.
भावार्थ:
श्यामा गो काली होने पर भी उसका दूध उज्ज्वल और बहुत गुणकारी होता है। यही समझकर सब लोग उसे पीते हैं। इसी तरह गँवारू भाषा में होने पर भी श्री सीतारामजी के यश को बुद्धिमान लोग बड़े चाव से गाते और सुनते हैं।
English Translation:
Like the celestial Surabhi cow, which is dark-hued yet produces pure and highly beneficial milk cherished by all, my composition, though written in the local Awadhi language, will be sung and heard by the wise and intelligent. This is because it is filled with the divine glory of Lord Ram and Sita ji.
भावार्थ:
मणि, माणिक और मोती की जैसी सुंदर छबि है, वह साँप, पर्वत और हाथी के मस्तक पर वैसी शोभा नहीं पाती। राजा के मुकुट और नवयुवती स्त्री के शरीर को पाकर ही ये सब अधिक शोभा को प्राप्त होते हैं।
English Translation:
A rare gem carried by a snake on its hood, a ruby emerging from a mountain, and a unique pearl found on the forehead of one in a million elephants, all are valuable, yet their true beauty is fully realized only when adorning the crown of a king or enhancing the elegance of a young, beautiful woman. Their splendour is elevated when placed in such graceful settings.
भावार्थ:
इसी तरह, बुद्धिमान लोग कहते हैं कि सुकवि की कविता भी उत्पन्न और कहीं होती है और शोभा अन्यत्र कहीं पाती है। कवि के स्मरण करते ही उसकी भक्ति के कारण सरस्वतीजी ब्रह्मलोक को छोड़कर दौड़ी आती हैं।
English Translation:
Similarly, wise individuals have observed that a beautiful composition originates in one place (the poet’s mind) but gains its true fame elsewhere (in the hearts of its admirers), where people appreciate its message, structure, and poetic excellence. Even Goddess Saraswati, drawn by the poet’s devotion, swiftly descends from the abode of Brahma ji at the poet’s invocation.
भावार्थ:
सरस्वतीजी की दौड़ी आने की वह थकावट रामचरित रूपी सरोवर में उन्हें नहलाए बिना दूसरे करोड़ों उपायों से भी दूर नहीं होती। कवि और पण्डित अपने हृदय में ऐसा विचारकर कलियुग के पापों को हरने वाले श्री हरि के यश का ही गान करते हैं।
English Translation:
The fatigue of Goddess Saraswati’s journey from the abode of Brahma Ji cannot be alleviated by a million remedies until she immerses Herself in the lake of Lord Ram’s deeds. Understanding this truth in their hearts, poets and scholars sing the glories of Lord Ram, whose divine stories cleanse all the sins of Kaliyug.
भावार्थ:
संसारी मनुष्यों का गुणगान करने से सरस्वतीजी सिर धुनकर पछताने लगती हैं। बुद्धिमान लोग हृदय को समुद्र, बुद्धि को सीप और सरस्वती को स्वाति नक्षत्र के समान कहते हैं।
English Translation:
Goddess Saraswati beats her head in lamentation when invoked by poets who compose verses glorifying material men and women. Wise individuals draw a comparison between the heart and the sea, the mind and an oyster’s shell, and the Swati star with Goddess Saraswati, just as a drop of dew under the influence of the Swati star falls into the oyster shell and transforms into a pearl.
भावार्थ:
इसमें यदि श्रेष्ठ विचार रूपी जल बरसता है तो मुक्ता मणि के समान सुंदर कविता होती है।
English Translation:
When pure rainwater falls into the oyster shell (a metaphor for a good composition entering the mind), the resulting poetry becomes as captivating and enchanting as a beautiful pearl.
भावार्थ:
जो कविताएँ मोतियों जैसी हैं, उन्हें समझदारी से चुना जाता है और फिर रामचरित के सुंदर धागे में पिरोकर सज्जनों के साफ दिल में रखा जाता है। इससे उन लोगों के दिल में बहुत प्रेम और सुंदरता आती है।
English Translation:
If those pearls (poems) are skillfully strung together on the beautiful thread of Lord Ram’s qualities, saintly people adorn this necklace close to their pure hearts, which radiates great love and beauty.
भावार्थ:
जो लोग इस भयानक कलियुग में जन्मे हैं, उनके कर्म कौए जैसे काले और कपड़े हंस जैसे सुंदर दिखते हैं। वे वेदों को छोड़कर गलत रास्ता अपनाते हैं और कपट और पाप से भरे हुए हैं।
English Translation:
Those born in this dreadful Kaliyug, whose deeds are like those of a crow but who outwardly appear like swans, abandon the Vedic path and walk the sinful path; they are the embodiment of deceit and the dirt of Kali Yuga.
भावार्थ:
जो लोग खुद को राम भक्त कहते हैं पर असल में धन, क्रोध और काम के गुलाम हैं, जो दिखावा करते हैं और झूठे धर्म के झंडे गाड़ते हैं, ऐसे लोगों में मैं सबसे पहला हूँ।
English Translation:
Those who call themselves devotees of Shri Ram but are actually slaves to greed, anger, and lust, who boast loudly and carry the false banner of religion, I count myself first among such people.
भावार्थ:
अगर मैं अपने सारे बुरे गुण बताऊँ तो कहानी बहुत लंबी हो जाएगी और मैं उसे खत्म नहीं कर पाऊँगा। इसलिए मैंने बहुत कम अवगुण बताए हैं। समझदार लोग थोड़ी बात से समझ जाएंगे।
English Translation:
If I were to recount all my faults, the story would become endless, and I would never finish. Therefore, I have only mentioned a few faults, trusting that wise people will understand.
भावार्थ:
मैंने अपने कई तरह के विनती के साथ ये कहानी सुनाई है, इसलिए कोई इसे बुरा नहीं कहेगा। फिर भी जो लोग शक करेंगे, वे मुझसे भी ज्यादा मूर्ख हैं।
English Translation:
Having heard my various humble requests, no one should find fault with this tale. Yet, those who still doubt it are even more foolish than I am.
भावार्थ:
मैं न कवि हूँ और न बहुत बुद्धिमान हूँ। मैं अपनी समझ के हिसाब से रामजी के गुण गाता हूँ। भगवान के गुण बहुत बड़े हैं, और मेरा मन संसार में उलझा हुआ है।
English Translation:
I am neither a poet nor very clever. I sing Lord Ram’s praises according to my understanding. His virtues are infinite, but my mind remains engrossed in worldly attachments.
भावार्थ:
जैसे तेज हवा सुमेरु जैसे बड़े पहाड़ को उड़ा सकती है, वैसे ही मेरे कमजोर मन की तुलना बड़ी बात से नहीं की जा सकती। मैं रामजी की महिमा को समझकर कथा लिखने में झिझकता हूँ।
English Translation:
Just as the wind can blow away the mighty mountain Sumeru, the delicate cotton-like mind cannot compare to such greatness. Realizing the infinite glory of Lord Ram, my mind hesitates to compose this tale.
भावार्थ:
सरस्वती माता, शेषनाग, शिवजी, ब्रह्मा, शास्त्र, वेद और पुराण सब यह कहते हैं कि उन्हें भगवान के गुणों का पूरा वर्णन नहीं पता। वे बस बार-बार यह गाते रहते हैं कि वह अनंत और अपरिमेय है।
English Translation:
Goddess Saraswati, Lord Shesha, Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma, the scriptures, Vedas, and Puranas say "neti-neti" (not this, not that) and continuously sing Lord Ram’s glories, acknowledging His infinite and boundless nature.
