भावार्थ:
लक्ष्मण के मन में जनकपुर जाकर देखने की विशेष लालसा थी, पर वे श्रीराम के संकोच और मुनि के भय के कारण उसे प्रकट नहीं करते, केवल मन ही मन मुस्कुराते हैं॥1॥
English Translation:
Lakshman had a strong desire in his heart to visit the city of Janakpur. Yet, out of reverence for Lord Ram and hesitation before the Sage, he did not express it aloud and simply smiled inwardly.
भावार्थ:
श्रीराम ने छोटे भाई के मन की दशा जान ली। भक्तों के प्रति प्रेम से उनका हृदय उमड़ आया। गुरु की आज्ञा पाकर वे अत्यंत विनयपूर्वक मुस्कुराते हुए बोले॥2॥
English Translation:
Lord Ram, the knower of hearts, understood His younger brother’s desire. His heart overflowed with affection for His devoted brother. With utmost humility and grace, He received the sage’s permission and then softly spoke.
भावार्थ:
हे नाथ! लक्ष्मण नगर देखना चाहते हैं, परन्तु आपसे डर और संकोच के कारण कह नहीं रहे। यदि आप आज्ञा दें, तो मैं इन्हें नगर दिखाकर तुरंत ही ले आऊँ॥3॥
English Translation:
“O Revered Master, Lakshman wishes to see the city but out of reverence and hesitation, he hasn’t spoken his mind. If you kindly permit, I will show him around and promptly return.”
भावार्थ:
यह सुनकर विश्वामित्रजी ने प्रेमपूर्वक कहा- हे राम! तुम नीति की रक्षा कैसे नहीं करोगे? हे तात! तुम धर्म की मर्यादा के रक्षक और प्रेमवश सेवकों को सुख देने वाले हो॥4॥
English Translation:
Hearing Ram’s gentle words, the sage responded warmly, “O Ram! How could you ever stray from righteousness? Dear child, you uphold dharma and, driven by love, always bring joy to your servants.”
भावार्थ:
हे सुख के भंडार दोनों भाइयो! जाकर नगर देख आओ और अपने सुंदर मुख की झलक देकर सबके नेत्रों को सफल करो॥218॥

भावार्थ:
दोनों भाई मुनि के चरणकमलों की वंदना करके चले। उनके सौंदर्य से मोहित बालकों के झुंड उनके साथ हो लिए, उनके नेत्र और मन लोभित हो उठे॥1॥

After bowing to the sage’s lotus feet, the two brothers—delight of all eyes—set out. Their divine beauty so enchanted the children that they began to follow, their eyes and minds drawn in complete admiration.
भावार्थ:
पीले वस्त्र, कटि में तरकस, हाथों में सुंदर धनुष-बाण, शरीरों पर सुंदर चंदन की खौर लगी थी। श्याम और गौर वर्ण की यह जोड़ी अत्यंत मनोहर है॥2॥
English Translation:
Clad in yellow robes, with quivers tied at the waist and graceful bows and arrows in hand, their forms were adorned with sandal paste suited to their complexion. The dark and fair pair looked exquisitely divine.
भावार्थ:
सिंह जैसे कंधे, विशाल भुजाएँ, वक्ष पर सुंदर नागमणि की माला, कमल-से नेत्र और चंद्रमा जैसा मुख है, जो तीनों प्रकार के तापों को हर लेता है॥3॥
English Translation:
With lion-like shoulders and mighty arms, a beautiful pearl garland on their chests, lotus-like eyes, and faces like the moon—they dispelled all sorrows from those who beheld them.
भावार्थ:
कानों में सुनहरे कर्णफूल शोभा दे रहे हैं। उनकी दृष्टि चित्त को चुरा लेने वाली है। उनकी भृकुटियाँ तिरछी, सुंदर हैं और तिलक की रेखा सौंदर्य की सीमा जैसी प्रतीत होती है॥4॥
English Translation:
Their golden earrings glistened, seeming to steal the hearts of those who glanced at them. Their charming, curved eyebrows and shining tilaks marked the pinnacle of divine elegance.
भावार्थ:
सुंदर चौकोनी टोपियाँ, काले-घुँघराले बाल और सिर से पैर तक सौंदर्य की मूर्तियाँ दोनों भाई, जिनके अंगों की शोभा अद्वितीय है॥219॥
English Translation:
Wearing elegant caps and sporting curly black hair, the brothers radiated charm from head to toe—every limb a perfect example of divine beauty.
भावार्थ:
जब लोगों ने सुना कि राजकुमार नगर देखने आए हैं, तो सब अपने घर और कार्य छोड़कर ऐसे दौड़े, जैसे गरीब खजाना लूटने दौड़ते हैं॥1॥
English Translation:
As soon as the people heard the princes had arrived to see the city, they abandoned everything and ran forth, as if the impoverished had found a treasure to seize.
भावार्थ:
दोनों भाइयों को देखकर नगरवासी नेत्रों का फल पाकर सुखी हो रहे हैं। युवतियाँ झरोखों से प्रेमपूर्वक श्रीराम के रूप को निहार रही हैं॥2॥
English Translation:
Beholding the naturally beautiful brothers, the citizens felt joy as if their eyes had attained fulfillment. Young women gazed lovingly upon Shri Ram from their jharokhas, completely enchanted.
भावार्थ:
वे आपस में प्रेमपूर्वक कहती हैं - सखि! इन्होंने करोड़ों कामदेवों की छवि को जीत लिया है। देवता, मनुष्य, असुर, नाग या मुनि—कहीं भी ऐसी शोभा नहीं देखी-सुनी गई॥3॥
English Translation:
They spoke to each other in delight: “Friend! His beauty has vanquished that of millions of Cupids. Be it gods, men, demons, serpents, or sages—none possess such divine charm.”
भावार्थ:
विष्णु के चार भुजाएँ, ब्रह्मा के चार मुख और शिव के विकट पाँच मुख हैं, पर ऐसी शोभा किसी देवता की नहीं। हे सखी! यह छवि वर्णन से परे है॥4॥
English Translation:
“Vishnu has four arms, Brahma four faces, and Shiva five fierce ones, but none compare. O friend, His beauty defies even the richest descriptions!”
भावार्थ:
दोनों भाई किशोर अवस्था में, सुंदरता के धाम, श्याम-गौर वर्ण के और सुख के सागर हैं। इनके प्रत्येक अंग पर करोड़ों कामदेव न्योछावर हैं॥220॥
English Translation:
In the blossom of youth, one dark, the other fair, these Brothers are the very essence of bliss and beauty. Each of their limbs outshines millions of Kamadevs—the gods of love bow before their form.
भावार्थ:
हे सखी! (भला) कहो तो ऐसा कौन शरीरधारी होगा, जो इस रूप को देखकर मोहित न हो जाए (अर्थात यह रूप जड़-चेतन सबको मोहित करने वाला है)। (तब) कोई दूसरी सखी प्रेम सहित कोमल वाणी से बोली- हे सयानी! मैंने जो सुना है उसे सुनो-॥1॥
English Translation:
Tell me, my friend, who among the living wouldn’t be enchanted by such beauty? One of them, speaking gently and with affection, said, “O’ Dear one, listen to what I’ve heard…”

ये दोनों (राजकुमार) महाराज दशरथजी के पुत्र हैं! बाल राजहंसों का सा सुंदर जोड़ा है। ये मुनि विश्वामित्र के यज्ञ की रक्षा करने वाले हैं, इन्होंने युद्ध के मैदान में राक्षसों को मारा है॥2॥

दोनों भाई ब्राह्मण विश्वामित्र का काम करके और रास्ते में मुनि गौतम की स्त्री अहल्या का उद्धार करके यहाँ धनुषयज्ञ देखने आए हैं। यह सुनकर सब स्त्रियाँ प्रसन्न हुईं॥221॥
English Translation:
Having fulfilled the tasks entrusted to them by the Brahmin Sage Vishwamitra, and liberating the wife of Sage Gautam, Ahalya, along the way, both Brothers have now arrived to witness the bow sacrifice.” Upon hearing this, all the women were filled with joy.
भावार्थ:
श्री रामचन्द्रजी की छबि देखकर कोई एक (दूसरी सखी) कहने लगी- यह वर जानकी के योग्य है। हे सखी! यदि कहीं राजा इन्हें देख ले, तो प्रतिज्ञा छोड़कर हठपूर्वक इन्हीं से विवाह कर देगा॥1॥
English Translation:
Beholding Lord Ram’s beauty, one of the women said, “He is the perfect match for Janaki (Sita ji). O’ Friend, if the King were to lay eyes on Him, he would abandon his vow of marrying Her only to the one who breaks Lord Shiv’s bow and would at once insist on their (Shri Ram and Sita ji’s) union.”
भावार्थ:
किसी ने कहा- राजा ने इन्हें पहचान लिया है और मुनि के सहित इनका आदरपूर्वक सम्मान किया है, परंतु हे सखी! राजा अपना प्रण नहीं छोड़ता। वह होनहार के वशीभूत होकर हठपूर्वक अविवेक का ही आश्रय लिए हुए हैं (प्रण पर अड़े रहने की मूर्खता नहीं छोड़ता)॥2॥
English Translation:
Someone said, “The King is aware of who they are, he has greeted them with respect along with the Sage. But O’ Friend, he will not break his vow. Bound by the will of the Divine, he remains stubborn and unyielding.”
भावार्थ:
कोई कहती है- यदि विधाता भले हैं और सुना जाता है कि वे सबको उचित फल देते हैं, तो जानकीजी को यही वर मिलेगा। हे सखी! इसमें संदेह नहीं है॥3॥

Someone said, “If God is just, and as everyone says, grants each what they truly deserve, then Janaki ji will surely have Him as Her groom. O’ Dear friend, there’s no doubt about it…

जो दैवयोग से ऐसा संयोग बन जाए, तो हम सब लोग कृतार्थ हो जाएँ। हे सखी! मेरे तो इसी से इतनी अधिक आतुरता हो रही है कि इसी नाते कभी ये यहाँ आवेंगे॥4॥

नहीं तो (विवाह न हुआ तो) हे सखी! सुनो, हमको इनके दर्शन दुर्लभ हैं। यह संयोग तभी हो सकता है, जब हमारे पूर्वजन्मों के बहुत पुण्य हों॥222॥

If by God’s will such a union takes place, everyone will be filled with gratitude. O’ Dear friend, the very thought fills me with joy and longing, that through this bond, He (Lord Ram) might visit us from time to time…

The women, with beautiful faces and lovely eyes, showered flowers upon the two Brothers with hearts full of joy. Wherever the Brothers went, they brought with them an air of divine bliss.

दोनों भाई नगर के पूरब ओर गए, जहाँ धनुषयज्ञ के लिए (रंग) भूमि बनाई गई थी। बहुत लंबा-चौड़ा सुंदर ढाला हुआ पक्का आँगन था, जिस पर सुंदर और निर्मल वेदी सजाई गई थी॥1॥
English Translation:
The two Brothers headed eastward in the city, where the grand arena for the bow sacrifice had been built. A vast and beautiful floor was laid out, and at its centre stood an immaculate, richly adorned altar.

चारों ओर सोने के बड़े-बड़े मंच बने थे, जिन पर राजा लोग बैठेंगे। उनके पीछे समीप ही चारों ओर दूसरे मचानों का मंडलाकार घेरा सुशोभित था॥2॥

On all four sides of the altar, grand golden platforms had been constructed for the kings (prospective grooms) to take their seats. Just behind these, on every side, another majestic platform encircled the area, adding to the splendour of the scene.

जहाँ अपने-अपने कुल के अनुसार सब स्त्रियाँ यथायोग्य (जिसको जहाँ बैठना उचित है) बैठकर देखेंगी। नगर के बालक कोमल वचन कह-कहकर आदरपूर्वक प्रभु श्री रामचन्द्रजी को (यज्ञशाला की) रचना दिखला रहे हैं॥4॥
English Translation:
…where women were to be seated according to their social status. The children of the city, in their soft and gentle voices, were respectfully guiding Shri Ram through the layout of the arena.

सब बालक इसी बहाने प्रेम के वश में होकर श्री रामजी के मनोहर अंगों को छूकर शरीर से पुलकित हो रहे हैं और दोनों भाइयों को देख-देखकर उनके हृदय में अत्यन्त हर्ष हो रहा है॥224॥

Using the excuse of showing Shri Ram and Shri Lakshman the arrangements for the bow sacrifice, the children lovingly touched their limbs, so graceful and captivating that they enchanted every heart. Their bodies brimmed with joy, and their hearts overflowed with delight as they gazed upon the divine beauty of the two Brothers, again and again.

श्री रामचन्द्रजी ने सब बालकों को प्रेम के वश जानकर (यज्ञभूमि के) स्थानों की प्रेमपूर्वक प्रशंसा की। (इससे बालकों का उत्साह, आनंद और प्रेम और भी बढ़ गया, जिससे) वे सब अपनी-अपनी रुचि के अनुसार उन्हें बुला लेते हैं और (प्रत्येक के बुलाने पर) दोनों भाई प्रेम सहित उनके पास चले जाते हैं॥1॥
English Translation:
Seeing all the children enchanted with affection, Lord Ram gently praised the beautifully constructed structures prepared for the bow sacrifice. Overjoyed by the love and warmth shown by Shri Ram and Shri Lakshman, the children eagerly called them to different spots, and the two Brothers, out of pure love and kindness, went wherever the children wished.

…that same gracious Lord, who, for the sake of devotion, becomes accessible to His devotees, now gazed with wonder at the arena of the bow sacrifice. After viewing all the arrangements, the two Brothers returned to Guru Vishwamitra. Realizing it was getting late, a quiet sense of concern stirred in their hearts.

जिनके भय से डर को भी डर लगता है, वही प्रभु भजन का प्रभाव (जिसके कारण ऐसे महान प्रभु भी भय का नाट्य करते हैं) दिखला रहे हैं। उन्होंने कोमल, मधुर और सुंदर बातें कहकर बालकों को जबर्दस्ती विदा किया॥4॥

The very Lord from whom even fear is afraid, now reveals the gentle strength of devotion. Speaking soft, sweet, and beautiful words, the Brothers lovingly but firmly bid the children farewell.

फिर भय, प्रेम, विनय और बड़े संकोच के साथ दोनों भाई गुरु के चरण कमलों में सिर नवाकर आज्ञा पाकर बैठे॥225॥

Then, with hearts filled with a blend of reverence, love, humility, and deep hesitation, both Brothers bowed at the lotus feet of Guru Vishwamitra and, with his permission, took their seats beside him.

रात्रि का प्रवेश होते ही (संध्या के समय) मुनि ने आज्ञा दी, तब सबने संध्यावंदन किया। फिर प्राचीन कथाएँ तथा इतिहास कहते-कहते सुंदर रात्रि दो पहर बीत गई॥1॥
English Translation:
As dusk approached, Sage Vishwamitra gave the command, and everyone performed their evening prayers. Afterwards, the Sage narrated ancient legends and stories from the Scriptures, and in this manner, six hours of the evening quietly passed.

…Those very two Brothers, won over by love, were tenderly pressing the lotus feet of their Guru with deep affection. Only after the Sage repeatedly urged them to rest did Shri Raghuveer, finally rise and go to sleep.

Now Shri Lakshman, with a touch of fear, deep affection, and immense joy, held the Lord Ram’s feet close to his heart and began pressing them. Again and again, the Lord gently said, “O’ Dear one, go to sleep.” Only then did Lakshman ji lie down, holding the image of his Brother’s lotus feet close within his heart.
भावार्थ:
रात बीतने पर, मुर्गे का शब्द कानों से सुनकर लक्ष्मणजी उठे। जगत के स्वामी सुजान श्री रामचन्द्रजी भी गुरु से पहले ही जाग गए॥226॥
English Translation:
Hearing the crowing of the rooster, Shri Lakshman woke as the night came to an end. The Lord of the Universe, the all-knowing Shri Ram, also rose, before His guru awoke.
भावार्थ:
सब शौचक्रिया करके वे जाकर नहाए। फिर (संध्या-अग्निहोत्रादि) नित्यकर्म समाप्त करके उन्होंने मुनि को मस्तक नवाया। (पूजा का) समय जानकर, गुरु की आज्ञा पाकर दोनों भाई फूल लेने चले॥
English Translation:
After completing their ablutions, bathing, and morning rituals (such as prayers and the fire yajna), the two Brothers approached the Sage and bowed their heads at his feet. Realizing it was time for the Guru’s prayers, they sought his permission and then set off to gather flowers.
