भावार्थ:
श्री रामजी के गुणों के समूह कुमार्ग, कुतर्क, कुचाल और कलियुग के कपट, दम्भ और पाखण्ड को जलाने के लिए वैसे ही हैं, जैसे ईंधन के लिए प्रचण्ड अग्नि॥
English Translation:
The qualities of Lord Ram are like a blazing fire, consuming the dry wood of evil ways, doubts, deceitful practices, cunningness, ego, and hypocrisy that prevail in Kaliyug.
भावार्थ:
रामचरित्र पूर्णिमा के चन्द्रमा की किरणों के समान सभी को सुख देने वाले हैं, परन्तु सज्जन रूपी कुमुदिनी और चकोर के चित्त के लिए तो विशेष हितकारी और महान लाभदायक हैं॥
English Translation:
The qualities of Lord Ram are akin to the soothing rays of the full Moon, bringing happiness to all. For the minds of saintly people, compared to white water-lilies and partridges, these qualities are especially beneficial. Just as the white water-lily blossoms in moonlight and the partridge, enchanted by the Moon, is said to feed on its beams, so do the saintly flourish and find joy in the virtues of Lord Ram.
भावार्थ:
जिस प्रकार श्री पार्वतीजी ने श्री शिवजी से प्रश्न किया और जिस प्रकार से श्री शिवजी ने विस्तार से उसका उत्तर कहा, वह सब कारण मैं विचित्र कथा की रचना करके गाकर कहूँगा॥
English Translation:
Just as Goddess Parvati earnestly questioned Lord Shiv (about the reasons for the formless Brahm manifesting on Earth as Lord Ram, and sought to hear the complete story of His divine pastimes), and just as Lord Shankar praised Her devotion, answered Her questions with great reverence, and narrated the sacred Ram Katha, I too shall now share those reasons with you and sing the tale of Lord Ram through my unique composition.
भावार्थ:
जिसने यह कथा पहले न सुनी हो, वह इसे सुनकर आश्चर्य न करे। जो ज्ञानी इस विचित्र कथा को सुनते हैं, वे यह जानकर आश्चर्य नहीं करते कि संसार में रामकथा की कोई सीमा नहीं है (रामकथा अनंत है)। उनके मन में ऐसा विश्वास रहता है। नाना प्रकार से श्री रामचन्द्रजी के अवतार हुए हैं और सौ करोड़ तथा अपार रामायण हैं॥
English Translation:
Those who have not heard this tale before should not be surprised upon hearing it. The Ram Katha is divine, and saintly individuals who hear it are not astonished, as they firmly understand that the story of Lord Ram is infinite across all worlds. They hold an unwavering belief in this truth. The reasons for His incarnations, as well as the avatars of Lord Ram are infinite, and there are over a billion Ramayanas in existence.
भावार्थ:
कल्पभेद के अनुसार श्री हरि के सुंदर चरित्रों को मुनीश्वरों ने अनेकों प्रकार से गया है। हृदय में ऐसा विचार कर संदेह न कीजिए और आदर सहित प्रेम से इस कथा को सुनिए॥
English Translation:
Many saints have sung about the divine exploits of Lord Ram in various ways, influenced by Kalpbhed (differences arising from the acts of the Lord performed in different yugas across the kalpas, the vast spans of cosmic time). Understanding this truth in one’s heart, one should harbour no doubt and listen to the sacred story with respect and love in their heart.
भावार्थ:
श्री रामचन्द्रजी अनन्त हैं, उनके गुण भी अनन्त हैं और उनकी कथाओं का विस्तार भी असीम है। अतएव जिनके विचार निर्मल हैं, वे इस कथा को सुनकर आश्चर्य नहीं मानेंगे॥
English Translation:
Lord Ram is boundless, with countless divine qualities, and His tales are infinite. Those with deeply pious and virtuous minds will not be astonished upon hearing the sacred story of Lord Ram.
भावार्थ:
इस प्रकार सब संदेहों को दूर करके और श्री गुरुजी के चरणकमलों की रज को सिर पर धारण करके मैं पुनः हाथ जोड़कर सबकी विनती करता हूँ, जिससे कथा की रचना में कोई दोष स्पर्श न करने पावे॥
English Translation:
With this approach, having removed all doubts and adorning the dust of my guru’s lotus feet upon my head, I humbly bow to everyone with joined palms, seeking your mercy, so that no fault may be attributed to the telling of this sacred story.
भावार्थ:
अब मैं आदरपूर्वक श्री शिवजी को सिर नवाकर श्री रामचन्द्रजी के गुणों की निर्मल कथा कहता हूँ। श्री हरि के चरणों पर सिर रखकर संवत् १६३१ (विक्रम सम्बत = ईस्वी सन + ५७) यानि १५७४ ईस्वी सन् में इस कथा का आरंभ करता हूँ॥
English Translation:
Now, with utmost respect, I bow my head to Lord Shiv and prepare to recite the sacred tale of the divine qualities of Lord Ram. Bowing at the feet of Lord Hari, I commence the composition of the Ramcharitmanas in the year 1574 A.D., corresponding to 1631 Vikram Sambat (calculated as A.D. + 57 years = Vikram Sambat).
भावार्थ:
चैत्र मास की नवमी तिथि मंगलवार को श्री अयोध्याजी में यह चरित्र प्रकाशित हुआ। जिस दिन श्री रामजी का जन्म होता है, वेद कहते हैं कि उस दिन सारे तीर्थ वहाँ (श्री अयोध्याजी में) चले आते हैं॥
English Translation:
On Tuesday, the 9th day of Chaitra month in the Hindu calendar (Spring), in the sacred Ayodhya city, the divine story of Lord Ram illuminated the world. The Vedas proclaim that on the auspicious day of Lord Ram’s birth, the presiding deities of all holy places gathered in Ayodhya to honour the divine event.
भावार्थ:
असुर-नाग, पक्षी, मनुष्य, मुनि और देवता सब अयोध्याजी में आकर श्री रघुनाथजी की सेवा करते हैं। बुद्धिमान लोग जन्म का महोत्सव मनाते हैं और श्री रामजी की सुंदर कीर्ति का गान करते हैं॥
English Translation:
Demons, snakes, birds, humans, sages, and Demigods all came to Ayodhya to pay homage to and serve Lord Raghunayak. The wise and enlightened beings celebrate His divine birth, singing the beautiful glories of Lord Ram with reverence and joy.
भावार्थ:
सज्जनों के बहुत से समूह उस दिन श्री सरयूजी के पवित्र जल में स्नान करते हैं और हृदय में सुंदर श्याम शरीर श्री रघुनाथजी का ध्यान करके उनके नाम का जप करते हैं॥
English Translation:
Groups of saintly people immerse themselves in the sacred waters of the Sarayu River. With hearts filled with devotion, they chant the holy name of Lord Ram, holding His beautiful, swarthy form firmly in their minds.
भावार्थ:
वेद-पुराण कहते हैं कि श्री सरयूजी का दर्शन, स्पर्श, स्नान और जलपान पापों को हरता है। यह नदी बड़ी ही पवित्र है, इसकी महिमा अनन्त है, जिसे विमल बुद्धि वाली सरस्वतीजी भी नहीं कह सकतीं॥
English Translation:
The Vedas and Puranas proclaim that merely seeing, touching, bathing in, or drinking the water of the Sarayu River absolves one of all sins. This sacred river is renowned for its unparalleled sanctity and limitless fame. Even the pure and eloquent mind of Goddess Saraswati cannot adequately express the infinite glory of this divine river.
भावार्थ:
यह शोभायमान अयोध्यापुरी श्री रामचन्द्रजी के परमधाम की देने वाली है, सब लोकों में प्रसिद्ध है और अत्यन्त पवित्र है। जगत में (अण्डज, स्वेदज, उद्भिज्ज और जरायुज) चार खानि (प्रकार) के अनन्त जीव हैं, इनमें से जो कोई भी अयोध्याजी में शरीर छोड़ते हैं, वे फिर संसार में नहीं आते (जन्म-मृत्यु के चक्कर से छूटकर भगवान के परमधाम में निवास करते हैं)॥
English Translation:
The city of Ayodhya, the sacred abode of Lord Ram, is unparalleled in beauty, revered across all realms, and profoundly holy. Among the 8.4 million species of lifeforms, divided into four types (those born from eggs, sweat, womb, and Earth), any being fortunate enough to be born in Ayodhya attains liberation upon death, breaking free from the cycle of birth and death, never to return to the material world.
भावार्थ:
इस अयोध्यापुरी को सब प्रकार से मनोहर, सब सिद्धियों की देने वाली और कल्याण की खान समझकर मैंने इस निर्मल कथा का आरंभ किया, जिसके सुनने से काम, मद और दम्भ नष्ट हो जाते हैं॥3॥
English Translation:
The city of Ayodhya is delightful in every aspect, offering joy to the heart, bestowing success and power, and serving as a treasure trove of all auspiciousness. I shall now begin the exceedingly sacred tale of Lord Ram. Merely by listening to this, all material desires, false pride, and hypocrisy are eradicated.
भावार्थ:
इसका नाम रामचरित मानस है, जिसके कानों से सुनते ही शांति मिलती है। मन रूपी हाथी विषय रूपी दावानल में जल रहा है, वह यदि इस रामचरित मानस रूपी सरोवर में आ पड़े तो सुखी हो जाए॥
English Translation:
The name of my composition is Shri Ramcharitmanas. By listening to it, one attains eternal peace. The heart, compared to an elephant, is scorched by the flames of sensual desires. As soon as this elephant-like heart immerses itself in the sacred lake of Lord Ram’s divine deeds, it experiences profound happiness and bliss.
भावार्थ:
यह रामचरित मानस मुनियों का प्रिय है, इस सुहावने और पवित्र मानस की शिवजी ने रचना की। यह तीनों प्रकार के दोषों, दुःखों और दरिद्रता को तथा कलियुग की कुचालों और सब पापों का नाश करने वाला है॥
English Translation:
Shri Ramcharitmanas is immensely cherished by the sages. It eradicates all defects of thoughts, words and deeds, and removes every kind of sorrow (Adhyatamik, arising from one’s body like birth, death, and old age; Adhidevik, caused by Demigods or natural forces; and Adhibhotik, resulting from one’s karma). Shri Ramcharitmanas alleviates miseries, dispels the evils of Kaliyug, and annihilates all forms of sin.
भावार्थ:
श्री महादेवजी ने इसको रचकर अपने मन में रखा था और सुअवसर पाकर पार्वतीजी से कहा। इसी से शिवजी ने इसको अपने हृदय में देखकर और प्रसन्न होकर इसका सुंदर ‘रामचरित मानस’ नाम रखा॥
English Translation:
Lord Shiv was the first to conceive Shri Ramcharitmanas in His heart. (The word manas means heart. Lord Shiv gave this story the title Shri Ramcharitmanas for two reasons: it contains the divine life account of Lord Ram, which resembles a sacred lake, and because Lord Shiv first treasured it in His heart) When the right moment came, Lord Shiv narrated it to Parvati ji. Seeing this sacred story within His heart filled Lord Shiv with immense delight, and in His joy, He named this beautiful composition Shri Ramcharitmanas.
भावार्थ:
मैं उसी सुख देने वाली सुहावनी रामकथा को कहता हूँ, हे सज्जनों! आदरपूर्वक मन लगाकर इसे सुनिए॥
English Translation:
I shall now recite this beautiful and delightful story. Let all noble devotees listen to it respectfully and with full attention.
भावार्थ:
यह रामचरित मानस जैसा है, जिस प्रकार बना है और जिस हेतु से जगत में इसका प्रचार हुआ, अब वही सब कथा मैं श्री उमा-महेश्वर का स्मरण करके कहता हूँ॥
English Translation:
Invoking Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiv, who bears the symbol of a bull (representing dharma) on His flag, I now begin to narrate the various aspects of Shri Ramcharitmanas, its essence, how it came into being, and the reasons for its widespread reverence and popularity in the world.
भावार्थ:
श्री शिवजी की कृपा से उसके हृदय में सुंदर बुद्धि का विकास हुआ, जिससे यह तुलसीदास श्री रामचरित मानस का कवि हुआ। अपनी बुद्धि के अनुसार तो वह इसे मनोहर ही बनाता है, किन्तु फिर भी हे सज्जनो! सुंदर चित्त से सुनकर इसे आप सुधार लीजिए
English Translation:
By the grace of Lord Shambhu, a beautiful and divine intellect overflowed in Tulsidas ji’s heart, inspiring him to compose Shri Ramcharitmanas. While Tulsidas ji, as a poet, endeavours to make it pleasing to everyone’s heart according to his own understanding, he humbly requests noble persons to listen to it with their pure and discerning minds and refine it further if needed.
भावार्थ:
सुंदर (सात्त्वकी) बुद्धि भूमि है, हृदय ही उसमें गहरा स्थान है, वेद-पुराण समुद्र हैं और साधु-संत मेघ हैं। वे (साधु रूपी मेघ) श्री रामजी के सुयश रूपी सुंदर, मधुर, मनोहर और मंगलकारी जल की वर्षा करते हैं॥
English Translation:
If a pious mind is likened to the Earth, the heart to a deep cavity within it, the Vedas and Scriptures to a vast ocean, and saintly people to clouds, then these saintly individuals shower pure water in the form of the sweet glories of Lord Ram. These glories are beautiful, pleasing to the heart, and entirely auspicious.
भावार्थ:
सगुण लीला का जो विस्तार से वर्णन करते हैं, वही राम सुयश रूपी जल की निर्मलता है, जो मल का नाश करती है और जिस प्रेमाभक्ति का वर्णन नहीं किया जा सकता, वही इस जल की मधुरता और सुंदर शीतलता है॥
English Translation:
The glorious deeds performed by Lord Ram in His manifested human form are compared to the purity of the rainwater mentioned above, which washes away all sins. The inexpressible love and devotion for Lord Ram are the sweetness and the cool, soothing effect of this divine water.
भावार्थ:
वह (राम सुयश रूपी) जल सत्कर्म रूपी धान के लिए हितकर है और श्री रामजी के भक्तों का तो जीवन ही है। वह पवित्र जल बुद्धि रूपी पृथ्वी पर गिरा और सिमटकर सुहावने कान रूपी मार्ग से चला और मानस (हृदय) रूपी श्रेष्ठ स्थान में भरकर वहीं स्थिर हो गया। वही पुराना होकर सुंदर, रुचिकर, शीतल और सुखदाई हो गया॥
English Translation:
With this water (the beautiful glories of Lord Ram), the auspicious acts, likened to crops of grain, flourish, and this water serves as the very lifeline for Lord Ram’s devotees. When this pure water falls upon the mind, just as rain falls on the Earth, it accumulates and flows down through the passage of the ears, gathering in the serene and sacred spot of the heart. There, it becomes steady, and over time, it transforms into a clear, delightful, cool, and refreshing lake.
भावार्थ:
इस कथा में बुद्धि से विचारकर जो चार अत्यन्त सुंदर और उत्तम संवाद (भुशुण्डि-गरुड़, शिव-पार्वती, याज्ञवल्क्य-भरद्वाज और तुलसीदास और संत) रचे हैं, वही इस पवित्र और सुंदर सरोवर के चार मनोहर घाट हैं॥
English Translation:
The four most beautiful and excellent dialogues (between Bhushundi ji and Garud ji, Lord Shiv and Goddess Parvati, Yajyavalkya ji and Bhardwaj ji, and Tulsidas ji and other saints), narrated after deep deliberation of the intellect, serve as the four lovely piers of the sacred and enchanting lake of Shri Ramcharitmanas.
