भावार्थ:
तब दस हजार राजा एक ही बार धनुष को उठाने लगे, तो भी वह उनके टाले नहीं टलता। शिवजी का वह धनुष कैसे नहीं डिगता था, जैसे कामी पुरुष के वचनों से सती का मन (कभी) चलायमान नहीं होता॥1॥
English Translation:
Ten thousand mighty kings tried to lift the bow together, but they couldn’t move it even slightly. Lord Shiv’s bow remained unmoved, just like the mind of a virtuous woman stays steadfast, unaffected by the temptations of a lustful man.
भावार्थ:
सब राजा उपहास के योग्य हो गए, जैसे वैराग्य के बिना संन्यासी उपहास के योग्य हो जाता है। कीर्ति, विजय, बड़ी वीरता—इन सबको वे धनुष के हाथों बरबस हारकर चले गए॥2॥
English Translation:
All the mighty kings became objects of ridicule, like an ascetic without renunciation. Stripped of their pride, glory, and valour by the sheer might of the bow, they were left with no choice but to retreat in shame.
भावार्थ:
राजा लोग हृदय से हारकर श्रीहीन (हतप्रभ) हो गए और अपने-अपने समाज में जा बैठे। राजाओं को (असफल) देखकर जनक अकुला उठे और ऐसे वचन बोले जो मानो क्रोध में सने हुए थे॥3॥
English Translation:
With their pride shattered and defeat weighing heavy on their hearts, the kings quietly returned to sit among their own retinues. Witnessing their frustration and failure, Janak ji grew deeply troubled and spoke words laced with restrained anger:
भावार्थ:
मैंने जो प्रण ठाना था, उसे सुनकर द्वीप-द्वीप के अनेकों राजा आए। देवता और दैत्य भी मनुष्य का शरीर धारण करके आए तथा और भी बहुत से रणधीर वीर आए॥4॥
English Translation:
“Drawn by the vow I declared, kings have arrived from far and wide, across this world and even beyond. Demigods, demons in human form, and countless valiant warriors have all gathered here…
भावार्थ:
परन्तु धनुष को तोड़कर मनोहर कन्या, बड़ी विजय और अत्यन्त सुंदर कीर्ति को पाने वाला मानो ब्रह्मा ने किसी को रचा ही नहीं॥251॥
English Translation:
…yet it appears that Lord Brahma has not created a man capable of breaking this mighty bow (Pinak) and earning the hand of the most graceful bride, along with unmatched glory, a noble victory, and everlasting fame…
भावार्थ:
कहिए, यह लाभ किसको अच्छा नहीं लगता, परन्तु किसी ने भी शंकरजी का धनुष नहीं चढ़ाया। अरे भाई! चढ़ाना और तोड़ना तो दूर रहा, कोई तिल भर भूमि भी छुड़ा न सका॥1॥
English Translation:
Tell me, who wouldn’t long for such a reward? And yet, no one could string Lord Shankar’s bow. O’ Brother, forget about stringing or breaking it, not a single person could even budge it an inch from the ground…
भावार्थ:
अब कोई वीरता का अभिमानी नाराज न हो। मैंने जान लिया, पृथ्वी वीरों से खाली हो गई। अब आशा छोड़कर अपने-अपने घर जाओ, ब्रह्मा ने सीता का विवाह लिखा ही नहीं॥2॥

Now, let no proud warrior king take offence when I say, there remains no true hero upon this Earth. Abandon all your hopes and return to your kingdoms. It seems it is not the will of the Divine that Sita be wed…
भावार्थ:
यदि प्रण छोड़ता हूँ, तो पुण्य जाता है, इसलिए क्या करूँ, कन्या कुँआरी ही रहे। यदि मैं जानता कि पृथ्वी वीरों से शून्य है, तो प्रण करके उपहास का पात्र न बनता॥3॥
English Translation:
If I break my vow, I risk losing all my earned pious merit. So the Princess must remain unmarried, what else can I do? Brother, had I known the world was bereft of true warriors, I would never have made myself a subject of mockery by taking such a vow.
भावार्थ:
जनक के वचन सुनकर सभी स्त्री-पुरुष जानकीजी की ओर देखकर दुःखी हुए, परन्तु लक्ष्मणजी तमतमा उठे, उनकी भौंहें टेढ़ी हो गईं, होठ फड़कने लगे और नेत्र क्रोध से लाल हो गए॥4॥
English Translation:
Hearing Janak ji’s words, all the men and women turned their gaze toward Janaki ji and were overcome with sorrow. But Lakshman ji was enraged, his eyebrows arched in anger, his lips trembled, and his eyes blazed red with fury.
भावार्थ:
श्री रघुवीरजी के डर से कुछ कह तो सकते नहीं, पर जनक के वचन उन्हें बाण से लगे। (जब न रह सके तब) श्री रामचन्द्रजी के चरण कमलों में सिर नवाकर वे यथार्थ वचन बोले-॥252॥
English Translation:
Out of reverence and fear of Shri Ram, Lakshman Ji held back his words, though King Janak’s remarks had struck his heart like sharp arrows. At last, he bowed at Ram ji’s lotus feet and spoke with heartfelt sincerity:
भावार्थ:
रघुवंशियों में कोई भी जहाँ होता है, उस समाज में ऐसे वचन कोई नहीं कहता, जैसे अनुचित वचन रघुकुल शिरोमणि श्री रामजी को उपस्थित जानते हुए भी जनकजी ने कहे हैं॥1॥

In an assembly graced by even a single member of the Raghu clan, none would dare speak such unfitting words as King Janak has, especially knowing that the very jewel of the Raghu lineage, Shri Ram, is seated before us…

हे सूर्य कुल रूपी कमल के सूर्य! सुनिए, मैं स्वभाव ही से कहता हूँ, कुछ अभिमान करके नहीं, यदि आपकी आज्ञा पाऊँ, तो मैं ब्रह्माण्ड को गेंद की तरह उठा लूँ॥2॥
English Translation:
Listen, O’ Sun of the Solar race, radiant like a lotus, humbly and without pride, I say this from the depths of my heart: if You permit me, I could lift the very egg-shaped Universe as effortlessly as a child lifts a ball…
भावार्थ:
और उसे कच्चे घड़े की तरह फोड़ डालूँ। मैं सुमेरु पर्वत को मूली की तरह तोड़ सकता हूँ, हे भगवन्! आपके प्रताप की महिमा से यह बेचारा पुराना धनुष तो कौन चीज है॥3॥
English Translation:
…and shatter it like a half-baked clay pot. I could crush Mount Meru as easily as snapping a radish. All of this is possible only through the power of Your glory, O’ Lord. What then is this feeble, ancient bow in comparison?
भावार्थ:
ऐसा जानकर हे नाथ! आज्ञा हो तो कुछ खेल करूँ, उसे भी देखिए। धनुष को कमल की डंडी की तरह चढ़ाकर उसे सौ योजन तक दौड़ा लिए चला जाऊँ॥4॥
English Translation:
Knowing this, O’ Lord, if You grant me Your permission, I shall carry out a deed that will serve as living proof before Your eyes. I will string this bow (Pinak) as effortlessly as one would bend a lotus stem, and then run with it for twelve hundred kilometres…
भावार्थ:
हे नाथ! आपके प्रताप के बल से मैं धनुष को कुकुरमुत्ते की तरह तोड़ दूँ। यदि ऐसा न कर सकूँ, तो प्रभु के चरणों की शपथ है कि फिर कभी धनुष और तरकस हाथ में नहीं लूँगा।
English Translation:
O’ Lord, with the power of Your glory, I will break the bow like a mushroom. And if I am unable to do this, I swear by Your feet that I will never hold my bow and quiver again.
भावार्थ:
जब लक्ष्मणजी ने क्रोधपूर्वक वचन बोले, तो पृथ्वी डोलने लगी और दिशाओं के हाथी काँप गए। सब लोग और राजा भयभीत हो उठे। सीता के हृदय में हर्ष भर गया और जनक जी लज्जित हो गए।
English Translation:
As Lakshman ji spoke in anger, the Earth trembled and the elephants of the directions shook. Everyone, including the kings, was struck with fear. Yet in Sita’s heart arose delight, and King Janak felt embarrassed.
भावार्थ:
गुरु, श्रीराम और सभी मुनि मन-ही-मन अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर बार-बार पुलकित हो उठे। श्रीराम ने इशारे से लक्ष्मण को शांत किया और प्रेमपूर्वक अपने पास बैठा लिया।
English Translation:
Guru, Shri Ram, and all the sages rejoiced within and were thrilled repeatedly. Shri Ram gently signaled Lakshman to calm down and lovingly seated him beside Him.
भावार्थ:
विश्वामित्रजी ने समय को शुभ जानकर अत्यंत प्रेमपूर्ण वाणी में कहा – हे राम! उठो, शिव का धनुष तोड़ो और जनकजी का संताप दूर करो।
English Translation:
Sage Vishwamitra, seeing the moment as auspicious, said with affection, “O Ram, rise and break the bow of Shiv, and relieve King Janak’s sorrow.”
भावार्थ:
गुरु के वचन सुनकर श्रीराम ने चरणों में सिर नवाया। न हर्ष हुआ, न विषाद। वे सहज स्वभाव से इस प्रकार उठ खड़े हुए कि उनकी मुद्रा युवराज सिंह को भी लजा दे।
English Translation:
Hearing the Guru’s words, Shri Ram bowed at his feet. Neither joy nor sorrow stirred in His heart. He stood up in such natural grace that even a young lion’s elegance paled in comparison.
भावार्थ:
मंच रूपी उदयाचल पर रघुनाथजी रूपी बालसूर्य का उदय होते ही संत-कमल खिल उठे और उनकी नेत्र-भौंरें आनंद से झूम उठीं।
English Translation:
As Shri Ram, like the rising sun, rose upon the stage (symbolic mountain), all the sages blossomed like lotuses, and their eyes danced like joyful bumblebees.
भावार्थ:
राजाओं की आशा रूपी रात नष्ट हो गई। उनके वचन रूपी तारे अब नहीं चमकते। अभिमानी राजा रूपी कुमुद मुरझा गए और कपटी राजा रूपी उल्लू छिप गए।
English Translation:
The kings’ hopes vanished like the night. Their boastful words, like stars, lost their shine. Arrogant kings, like lilies, shrank away, while the deceitful ones, like owls, hid themselves.
भावार्थ:
मुनि और देवता, चकवे के समान, शोक रहित हो गए। वे पुष्प वर्षा कर अपनी सेवा प्रकट कर रहे थे। श्रीराम ने प्रेम सहित गुरु के चरणों में प्रणाम कर मुनियों से आज्ञा माँगी।
English Translation:
The sages and gods, like chakwa birds freed from sorrow, began to shower flowers in reverence. Shri Ram bowed lovingly at the Guru’s feet and sought permission from the sages.
भावार्थ:
हे सखियों! जो हमारे हितैषी कहलाते हैं, वे भी बस तमाशा देख रहे हैं। कोई भी गुरु से जाकर यह नहीं कहता कि यह बालक है, इसके लिए ऐसा हठ उचित नहीं।
English Translation:
“O friends! Those who claim to be our well-wishers merely watch this spectacle. No one explains to the Guru that this child is too young for such stubborn insistence.”
भावार्थ:
रावण और बाणासुर तक उस धनुष को छू भी न सके, सभी राजा घमंड में हार मान गए। अब वही धनुष इस सुकुमार राजकुमार को दिया जा रहा है। क्या कोई हंस का बच्चा मंदराचल उठा सकता है?
English Translation:
Even Ravan and Banasur could not touch the bow, and all the kings were defeated in pride. Yet now this mighty bow is being handed to this tender prince. Can a baby swan lift the mighty Mandarachal mountain?
भावार्थ:
राजा तो बड़े ज्ञानी हैं, उन्हें गुरु को समझाना चाहिए था। पर लगता है, उनका भी सारा सयानापन समाप्त हो गया। हे सखी! विधाता की गति कुछ समझ में नहीं आती। तब एक चतुर सखी कोमल वाणी से बोली — हे रानी! तेजवान को छोटा नहीं समझना चाहिए।
English Translation:
It seems as though all the King’s wisdom has come to an end. “O’ Friend, the ways of the Creator are beyond understanding.” At this, a wise companion gently replied, “O’ Queen, one should never underestimate a glorious individual, even if he appears small or young in form…
भावार्थ:
कहाँ छोटा सा मुनि अगस्त्य और कहाँ विशाल समुद्र? परंतु उन्होंने उसे सोख लिया। जैसे सूर्य मंडल देखने में छोटा लगता है, पर उसके उदय होते ही तीनों लोकों का अंधकार भाग जाता है।
English Translation:
What comparison is there between Sage Agastya (born of a humble pitcher) and the mighty ocean? Yet he drank it dry. The Sun appears small to the eye, yet the moment it rises, the darkness of all three worlds vanishes.
भावार्थ:
जिसके वश में ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, शिव और सभी देवता हैं, वह मंत्र अत्यन्त छोटा होता है। जैसे महान मतवाले हाथी को छोटा सा अंकुश वश में कर लेता है।
English Translation:
The mantra, though small in form, controls even Brahma, Vishnu, Shiv, and all gods — just like a mighty elephant is controlled by a tiny goad.
भावार्थ:
कामदेव ने फूलों के धनुष-बाण से तीनों लोकों को वश में किया है। हे देवी! संदेह त्यागिए, श्रीराम अवश्य ही धनुष तोड़ेंगे।
English Translation:
Kaamdev ruled all worlds with a bow of flowers. O’ Queen, cast aside your doubt. Shri Ram will surely break the bow.
भावार्थ:
सखी की बातों से रानी को विश्वास हुआ, उदासी मिट गई, रामजी के प्रति प्रेम बढ़ा। तब सीताजी भयभीत हृदय से विभिन्न देवताओं से विनती करने लगीं।
English Translation:
Hearing her friend’s words, the Queen felt assured. Her sorrow vanished and love for Ram deepened. Sita ji, seeing Ram, began praying to various deities with a nervous heart.
भावार्थ:
सीता मन ही मन प्रार्थना कर रही हैं—हे शिव-पार्वती! कृपा करिए, मेरी सेवा सफल करिए और धनुष का भार हल्का कीजिए।
English Translation:
With anxious heart, Sita ji prayed—“O’ Shiv-Parvati! Be pleased with me, make my service fruitful, and lighten the bow’s burden.”
भावार्थ:
हे गणेशजी! आज के दिन के लिए ही मैंने आपकी सेवा की थी। मेरी बारम्बार विनती सुनकर धनुष का भार बहुत कम कर दीजिए।
English Translation:
O’ Ganesh, bestower of boons, I have served You for this day. Please listen to my repeated pleas and reduce the bow’s weight.
भावार्थ:
रघुनाथजी को देख-देखकर सीता धैर्य धर देवताओं से विनती कर रही हैं। आँखों में प्रेमाश्रु भरे हैं और शरीर रोमांचित है।
English Translation:
Seeing Shri Ram, Sita composed herself and prayed to the gods. Her eyes brimmed with tears of love, and her body thrilled with emotion.
भावार्थ:
सीताजी की वाणी रूपी भ्रमरी को उनके मुख रूपी कमल ने रोक रखा है। लाज रूपी रात्रि को देखकर वह प्रकट नहीं हो रही है। नेत्रों का जल नेत्रों के कोने (कोये) में ही रह जाता है। जैसे बड़े भारी कंजूस का सोना कोने में ही गड़ा रह जाता है॥1॥
English Translation:
Sita ji’s words remained trapped, like a bumblebee enclosed within a lotus (when it shuts its petals at night). Modesty, like the night, kept the bumblebee of Her speech from leaving Her lotus-like mouth. Her tears too stayed hidden in the corners of Her eyes, much like a miser’s gold, tucked away in some secret corner of his home.
भावार्थ:
अपनी बढ़ी हुई व्याकुलता जानकर सीताजी सकुचा गईं और धीरज धरकर हृदय में विश्वास ले आईं कि यदि तन, मन और वचन से मेरा प्रण सच्चा है और श्री रघुनाथजी के चरण कमलों में मेरा चित्त वास्तव में अनुरक्त है,॥2॥

Overcome with anxiety, Sita ji turned inward and gathered strength within Her heart. She said to Herself, “If I have remained true to my vow in thought, word, and deed, and if my heart is truly devoted to the lotus feet of Lord Ram…
भावार्थ:
तो सबके हृदय में निवास करने वाले भगवान मुझे रघुश्रेष्ठ श्री रामचन्द्रजी की दासी अवश्य बनाएँगे। जिसका जिस पर सच्चा स्नेह होता है, वह उसे मिलता ही है, इसमें कुछ भी संदेह नहीं है॥3॥
English Translation:
…then the Lord who resides in every heart will surely make me the servant of the noblest among the Raghus, Shri Ram. When one’s love is true and unwavering, they are bound to attain their beloved, of this, there is no doubt.”
भावार्थ:
प्रभु की ओर देखकर सीताजी ने शरीर के द्वारा प्रेम ठान लिया (अर्थात् यह निश्चय कर लिया कि यह शरीर इन्हीं का होकर रहेगा या रहेगा ही नहीं) कृपानिधान श्री रामजी सब जान गए। उन्होंने सीताजी को देखकर धनुष की ओर कैसे ताका, जैसे गरुड़जी छोटे से साँप की ओर देखते हैं॥4॥
English Translation:
Casting a gentle glance at the Lord, Sita ji made a firm resolve, Her heart and body would belong to none but Shri Ram. The all-compassionate Shri Ram understood it all. To reassure Her and fill Her with confidence, He turned His gaze toward the bow, just as Garud ji, the mighty King of Birds, fixes his eyes on a helpless little snake, ready to devour it with effortless ease.
