भावार्थ:
प्रतिकूल विधाता की करनी बड़ी कठोर है, जिसने माता कैकेयी को बावली बना दिया (उसकी मति फेर दी)। उस रात को प्रभु श्री रामचंद्रजी बार-बार आदरपूर्वक आपकी बड़ी सराहना करते थे। तुलसीदासजी कहते हैं- (निषादराज कहता है कि-) श्री रामचंद्रजी को आपके समान अतिशय प्रिय और कोई नहीं है, मैं सौगंध खाकर कहता हूँ। परिणाम में मंगल होगा, यह जानकर आप अपने हृदय में धैर्य धारण कीजिए।

सखा के वचन सुनकर, हृदय में धीरज धरकर श्री रामचंद्रजी का स्मरण करते हुए भरतजी डेरे को चले। नगर के सारे स्त्री-पुरुष यह (श्री रामजी के ठहरने के स्थान का) समाचार पाकर बड़े आतुर होकर उस स्थान को देखने चले॥1॥
English Translation:
Hearing his friend’s soothing words, Bharat ji’s heart became calm and he proceeded to his resting place keeping Shri Raghuveer in his thoughts. When the men and women of Ayodhya learnt about this (the spot where Shri Ram had rested), they became very distressed and rushed there to see it.
भावार्थ:
वे उस स्थान की परिक्रमा करके प्रणाम करते हैं और कैकेयी को बहुत दोष देते हैं। नेत्रों में जल भर-भर लेते हैं और प्रतिकूल विधाता को दूषण देते हैं॥2॥
English Translation:
After circumambulating the spot and making obeisance, they blamed Kaikeyi in many ways. Again and again they filled their eyes with tears and blamed the adverse Creator.
भावार्थ:
कोई भरतजी के स्नेह की सराहना करते हैं और कोई कहते हैं कि राजा ने अपना प्रेम खूब निबाहा। सब अपनी निंदा करके निषाद की प्रशंसा करते हैं। उस समय के विमोह और विषाद को कौन कह सकता है?॥3॥
English Translation:
Some people extolled Bharat ji’s affection and others said that the King very well carried out the actions of love. They blamed themselves and praised the Chief of Nishads. Who could describe the delusion and grief on that occasion?
भावार्थ:
इस प्रकार रातभर सब लोग जागते रहे। सबेरा होते ही खेवा लगा। सुंदर नाव पर गुरुजी को चढ़ाकर फिर नई नाव पर सब माताओं को चढ़ाया॥4॥
English Translation:
In this manner, everyone stayed awake that night. At the break of dawn, boarding started (to cross the River Ganga on boats). First Guru Vashishth was escorted atop a beautiful boat, followed by the mothers who were all helped to get on another new boat.
भावार्थ:
चार घड़ी में सब गंगाजी के पार उतर गए। तब भरतजी ने उतरकर सबको सँभाला॥5॥
English Translation:
In approximately one and half hours (96 minutes), everyone crossed Ganga ji. After getting down, Bharat ji took care of everyone.
भावार्थ:
प्रातःकाल की क्रियाओं को करके माता के चरणों की वंदना कर और गुरुजी को सिर नवाकर भरतजी ने विषाद गणों को (रास्ता दिखलाने के लिए) आगे कर लिया और सेना चला दी॥202॥
English Translation:
After performing morning ablutions, bowing at the feet of the mother and Guru Vashishth, Bharat ji asked a few Nishad men to lead the way, while his army marched behind.
भावार्थ:
निषादराज को आगे करके पीछे सब माताओं की पालकियाँ चलाईं। छोटे भाई शत्रुघ्नजी को बुलाकर उनके साथ कर दिया। फिर ब्राह्मणों सहित गुरुजी ने गमन किया॥1॥
English Translation:
Bharat ji asked the Chief of Nishads, Guh, to walk in front of all the palanquins (carriages) of the mothers. Then Bharat ji called his younger brother Shatrughan and sent him with the mothers. Thereafter, Guru Vashishth and the other Brahmins proceeded.
भावार्थ:
तदनन्तर आप (भरतजी) ने गंगाजी को प्रणाम किया और लक्ष्मण सहित श्री सीता-रामजी का स्मरण किया। भरतजी पैदल ही चले। उनके साथ कोतल (बिना सवार के) घोड़े बागडोर से बँधे हुए चले जा रहे हैं॥2॥
English Translation:
Then after paying obeisance to the celestial river Ganga, and meditating on Lakshman ji along with Sita ji and Ram ji, Bharat ji proceeded on foot. The royal horses walked alongside (without the Princes riding them), with their reins held by the attendants.

उत्तम सेवक बार-बार कहते हैं कि हे नाथ! आप घोड़े पर सवार हो लीजिए। (भरतजी जवाब देते हैं कि) श्री रामचंद्रजी तो पैदल ही गए और हमारे लिए रथ, हाथी और घोड़े बनाए गए हैं॥3॥

मुझे उचित तो ऐसा है कि मैं सिर के बल चलकर जाऊँ। सेवक का धर्म सबसे कठिन होता है। भरतजी की दशा देखकर और कोमल वाणी सुनकर सब सेवकगण ग्लानि के मारे गले जा रहे हैं॥4॥
English Translation:
It would be better if I walk on my head (since Shri Ram had walked barefoot on this ground, I should not walk on it, but instead I should place this dust on my head). The duty of a servant is the toughest of all duties. Seeing Bharat ji walk and hearing his soft words, the servants melted with remorse (they felt guilty of walking with their shoes on).
भावार्थ:
प्रेम में उमँग-उमँगकर सीताराम-सीताराम कहते हुए भरतजी ने तीसरे पहर प्रयाग में प्रवेश किया॥203॥
English Translation:
Chanting “Sita Ram, Sita Ram, Sita Ram…” enthusiastically along the way, Bharat ji reached Prayag in the afternoon around 3 p.m.
भावार्थ:
उनके चरणों में छाले कैसे चमकते हैं, जैसे कमल की कली पर ओस की बूँदें चमकती हों। भरतजी आज पैदल ही चलकर आए हैं, यह समाचार सुनकर सारा समाज दुःखी हो गया॥1॥
English Translation:
The blisters on his feet glistened like dew drops on a lotus bud. Upon hearing that Bharat ji had walked the entire journey barefoot on that day, the entire group became sad.
भावार्थ:
जब भरतजी ने यह पता पा लिया कि सब लोग स्नान कर चुके, तब त्रिवेणी पर आकर उन्हें प्रणाम किया। फिर विधिपूर्वक (गंगा-यमुना के) श्वेत और श्याम जल में स्नान किया और दान देकर ब्राह्मणों का सम्मान किया॥2॥
English Translation:
After learning that everyone had taken a bath, Bharat ji came and bowed before the holy Triveni (at the holy Prayag Raj, the confluence point of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati). Then he bathed in the white (Ganga ji) and dark waters (Yamuna ji), as per established rituals. He gave donations and honored the Brahmins.

श्याम और सफेद (यमुनाजी और गंगाजी की) लहरों को देखकर भरतजी का शरीर पुलकित हो उठा और उन्होंने हाथ जोड़कर कहा- हे तीर्थराज! आप समस्त कामनाओं को पूर्ण करने वाले हैं। आपका प्रभाव वेदों में प्रसिद्ध और संसार में प्रकट है॥3॥

Beholding the dark and white waves, Bharat ji’s body thrilled with excitement. He joined his palms and prayed, “O’ King of all pilgrimages, you are the bestower of all wishes. Your glory is known to the Vedas and your renown is well known across the entire world…

मैं अपना धर्म (न माँगने का क्षत्रिय धर्म) त्यागकर आप से भीख माँगता हूँ। आर्त्त मनुष्य कौन सा कुकर्म नहीं करता? ऐसा हृदय में जानकर सुजान उत्तम दानी जगत् में माँगने वाले की वाणी को सफल किया करते हैं (अर्थात् वह जो माँगता है, सो दे देते हैं)॥4॥

I beg for alms before you after renouncing my Kshatriya faith (the warrior class never begs in front of anyone). Is there any evil act that an afflicted person would not undertake (to overcome his affliction)? भावार्थ:
मुझे न अर्थ की रुचि (इच्छा) है, न धर्म की, न काम की और न मैं मोक्ष ही चाहता हूँ। जन्म-जन्म में मेरा श्री रामजी के चरणों में प्रेम हो, बस, यही वरदान माँगता हूँ, दूसरा कुछ नहीं॥204॥
English Translation:
Neither do I desire wealth, nor do I seek religious merit, nor any material pleasures, nor do I ask for salvation. I ask for no boon other than only to have loving devotion in the feet of Shri Ram, in each and every birth.
भावार्थ:
स्वयं श्री रामचंद्रजी भी भले ही मुझे कुटिल समझें और लोग मुझे गुरुद्रोही तथा स्वामी द्रोही भले ही कहें, पर श्री सीता-रामजी के चरणों में मेरा प्रेम आपकी कृपा से दिन-दिन बढ़ता ही रहे॥1॥
English Translation:
Even if Shri Ram Himself considers me deceitful or even if people call me an enemy of my Guru and master, my love for the feet of Sita ji and Ram ji should increase manifolds every day, by your grace.
भावार्थ:
मेघ चाहे जन्मभर चातक की सुध भुला दे और जल माँगने पर वह चाहे वज्र और पत्थर (ओले) ही गिरावे, पर चातक की रटन घटने से तो उसकी बात ही घट जाएगी (प्रतिष्ठा ही नष्ट हो जाएगी)। उसकी तो प्रेम बढ़ने में ही सब तरह से भलाई है॥2॥
English Translation:
Even if clouds forget about the papaya bird for his entire lifespan and when asked for water, they rain down thunderbolts and hailstones, seeing these adverse conditions, if the papaya bird’s chirping (yearning for clouds to give water) becomes less, then his reputation will be destroyed. Intensifying his love for the clouds is the only beneficial thing in every way for the papaya bird.
भावार्थ:
जैसे तपाने से सोने पर आब (चमक) आ जाती है, वैसे ही प्रियतम के चरणों में प्रेम का नियम निबाहने से प्रेमी सेवक का गौरव बढ़ जाता है। भरतजी के वचन सुनकर बीच त्रिवेणी में से सुंदर मंगल देने वाली कोमल वाणी हुई॥3॥
English Translation:
Just like gold shines after being put into fire, similarly by undertaking duties (like fasting, chanting, penance etc.) for the sake of the one’s beloved master, his devotion in the master’s feet intensifies. Hearing Bharat ji’s humble prayer, beautiful and auspicious words appeared from the holy Triveni.
भावार्थ:
हे तात भरत! तुम सब प्रकार से साधु हो। श्री रामचंद्रजी के चरणों में तुम्हारा अथाह प्रेम है। तुम व्यर्थ ही मन में ग्लानि कर रहे हो। श्री रामचंद्रजी को तुम्हारे समान प्रिय कोई नहीं है॥4॥
English Translation:
“O’ Son, you are a saint in every way. You have deep love for the feet of Lord Ram. Do not feel guilty in your heart, there is no one as dear to Shri Ram as you are.”
भावार्थ:
त्रिवेणीजी के अनुकूल वचन सुनकर भरतजी का शरीर पुलकित हो गया, हृदय में हर्ष छा गया। भरतजी धन्य हैं, कहकर देवता हर्षित होकर फूल बरसाने लगे॥205॥
English Translation:
Hearing these favourable words from the Holy Triveni, a thrill ran through Bharat ji’s body and he felt extremely delighted in his heart. The Demigods cheerfully rained down flowers, uttering, “Bharat, you are great, you are great.”
भावार्थ:
तीर्थराज प्रयाग में रहने वाले वनप्रस्थ, ब्रह्मचारी, गृहस्थ और उदासीन (संन्यासी) सब बहुत ही आनंदित हैं और दस-पाँच मिलकर आपस में कहते हैं कि भरतजी का प्रेम और शील पवित्र और सच्चा है॥1॥
English Translation:
All the residents, ascetics, religious students, householders and hermits who lived in Prayag, were all very happy to witness this whole incident. A group of 5-10 men were saying to each other that Bharat ji’s love and amiability is pious and genuine.
भावार्थ:
श्री रामचन्द्रजी के सुंदर गुण समूहों को सुनते हुए वे मुनिश्रेष्ठ भरद्वाजजी के पास आए। मुनि ने भरतजी को दण्डवत प्रणाम करते देखा और उन्हें अपना मूर्तिमान सौभाग्य समझा॥2॥
English Translation:
Listening to many collections of Shri Ram’s beautiful virtues along the way, Bharat ji reached the Chief of Sages, Bhardwaj ji. The Sage saw Bharat ji lying prostrate on the ground before him. The Sage considered himself very lucky to see Bharat ji and saw his own good luck personified in Bharat ji.
भावार्थ:
उन्होंने दौड़कर भरतजी को उठाकर हृदय से लगा लिया और आशीर्वाद देकर कृतार्थ किया। मुनि ने उन्हें आसन दिया। वे सिर नवाकर इस तरह बैठे मानो भागकर संकोच के घर में घुस जाना चाहते हैं॥3॥
English Translation:
He ran and lifted Bharat ji and hugged him. The Sage bestowed his blessings on Bharat ji and gratified him. The Sage offered him a seat and Bharat ji sat down with his head bent low, as if he wanted to run and hide his face in the home of hesitation.
भावार्थ:
उनके मन में यह बड़ा सोच है कि मुनि कुछ पूछेंगे (तो मैं क्या उत्तर दूँगा)। भरतजी के शील और संकोच को देखकर ऋषि बोले- भरत! सुनो, हम सब खबर पा चुके हैं। विधाता के कर्तव्य पर कुछ वश नहीं चलता॥4॥

Bharat ji felt disturbed in his heart by the thought that the Sage might ask him something (and what should his reply be). Seeing Bharat ji’s amiability and apprehension, the Sage said, “Listen Bharat, I have heard everything, there is nothing one can do against the feat of destiny…

माता की करतूत को समझकर (याद करके) तुम हृदय में ग्लानि मत करो। हे तात! कैकेयी का कोई दोष नहीं है, उसकी बुद्धि तो सरस्वती बिगाड़ गई थी॥206॥

Thinking about the deceitful act of your mother, do not feel distressed at heart. O’ Son, it is not Kaikeyi’s fault, Goddess Saraswati deluded her mind…

यह कहते भी कोई भला न कहेगा, क्योंकि लोक और वेद दोनों ही विद्वानों को मान्य है, किन्तु हे तात! तुम्हारा निर्मल यश गाकर तो लोक और वेद दोनों बड़ाई पावेंगे॥1॥

However, even this (to declare Kaikeyi faultless and to put the blame on Goddess Saraswati), will not be approved by all. Because the world knows and both the Vedas and wise men agree that fate (God’s will) is supreme and that you (Bharat) are absolutely not at fault. O’ Son, by singing your pious glories, the world and the Vedas will in fact earn renown…
भावार्थ:
यह लोक और वेद दोनों को मान्य है और सब यही कहते हैं कि पिता जिसको राज्य दे वही पाता है। राजा सत्यव्रती थे, तुमको बुलाकर राज्य देते, तो सुख मिलता, धर्म रहता और बड़ाई होती॥2॥
English Translation:
It is well accepted by the Vedas and the world and people also agree that the son to whom the father gives the Kingdom, he alone gets the throne. The King followed the path of truth and if he had called you and handed over the throne, then this would have brought him joy, religious merit and glory.
भावार्थ:
सारे अनर्थ की जड़ तो श्री रामचन्द्रजी का वनगमन है, जिसे सुनकर समस्त संसार को पीड़ा हुई। वह श्री राम का वनगमन भी भावीवश हुआ। बेसमझ रानी तो भावीवश कुचाल करके अंत में पछताई॥3॥

The root cause of all the trouble was Shri Ram’s exile to the forest. Hearing which, the entire world felt extreme pain. So it was because of fate alone that the unreasonable Queen made a cunning move and is now repenting in the end…
भावार्थ:
उसमें भी तुम्हारा कोई तनिक सा भी अपराध कहे, तो वह अधम, अज्ञानी और असाधु है। यदि तुम राज्य करते तो भी तुम्हें दोष न होता। सुनकर श्री रामचन्द्रजी को भी संतोष ही होता॥4॥

But if anyone puts even the tiniest blame on you, then he is a sinner, an ignorant and unrighteous person. Even if you had accepted sovereignty, you would not have incurred any blame and Shri Ram would also have felt gratified to hear this.

हे भरत! अब तो तुमने बहुत ही अच्छा किया, यही मत तुम्हारे लिए उचित था। श्री रामचन्द्रजी के चरणों में प्रेम होना ही संसार में समस्त सुंदर मंगलों का मूल है॥207॥

…Now what you have done is very good. O’ Bharat, this is the right decision for you. The foundation of all auspiciousness in this world is to have devotion in the feet of Raghuveer…

सो वह (श्री रामचन्द्रजी के चरणों का प्रेम) तो तुम्हारा धन, जीवन और प्राण ही है, तुम्हारे समान बड़भागी कौन है? हे तात! तुम्हारे लिए यह आश्चर्य की बात नहीं है, क्योंकि तुम दशरथजी के पुत्र और श्री रामचन्द्रजी के प्यारे भाई हो॥1॥
English Translation:
…This devotion (love in Shri Ram’s feet) is your wealth, life and soul. Who can be as highly blessed as you? O’ Son, this is not a matter of surprise for you, because you are the son of Dashrath and the dear brother of Ram…
भावार्थ:
हे भरत! सुनो, श्री रामचन्द्र के मन में तुम्हारे समान प्रेम पात्र दूसरा कोई नहीं है। लक्ष्मणजी, श्री रामजी और सीताजी तीनों की सारी रात उस दिन अत्यन्त प्रेम के साथ तुम्हारी सराहना करते ही बीती॥2॥
English Translation:
…Listen, O’ Bharat, no one else is held so dearly in His heart by Raghuveer as you. Lakshman, Ram and Sita most affectionately spent that entire night praising you…

प्रयागराज में जब वे स्नान कर रहे थे, उस समय मैंने उनका यह मर्म जाना। वे तुम्हारे प्रेम में मग्न हो रहे थे। तुम पर श्री रामचन्द्रजी का ऐसा ही (अगाध) स्नेह है, जैसा मूर्ख (विषयासक्त) मनुष्य का संसार में सुखमय जीवन पर होता है॥3॥

…I came to realize this deep truth when Ram was bathing at Prayag. He was completely engrossed in your love. Ram loves you as dearly as a foolish person loves material pleasures in the world…

यह श्री रघुनाथजी की बहुत बड़ाई नहीं है, क्योंकि श्री रघुनाथजी तो शरणागत के कुटुम्ब भर को पालने वाले हैं। हे भरत! मेरा यह मत है कि तुम तो मानो शरीरधारी श्री रामजी के प्रेम ही हो॥4॥

…This however, is not a big praise for Raghuveer because He dearly cherishes the entire family of the suppliant. In my opinion, Bharat, you are the very personification of love for Ram…

हे भरत! तुम्हारे लिए (तुम्हारी समझ में) यह कलंक है, पर हम सबके लिए तो उपदेश है। श्री रामभक्ति रूपी रस की सिद्धि के लिए यह समय गणेश (बड़ा शुभ) हुआ है॥208॥

…What you consider a sin is a lesson for all of us. This very occasion is the most propitious time to attain unalloyed devotion for Shri Ram…

हे तात! तुम्हारा यश निर्मल नवीन चन्द्रमा है और श्री रामचन्द्रजी के दास कुमुद और चकोर हैं (वह चन्द्रमा तो प्रतिदिन अस्त होता और घटता है, जिससे कुमुद और चकोर को दुःख होता है), परन्तु यह तुम्हारा यश रूपी चन्द्रमा सदा उदय रहेगा, कभी अस्त होगा ही नहीं! जगत रूपी आकाश में यह घटेगा नहीं, वरन दिन-दिन दूना होगा॥1॥

…O’ Son, your glory is like the pure and spotless new Moon and the devotees of Raghuveer are like the white lilies and partridges (both feed on moonbeams and become happy and sad to watch Moon’s waxing and waning phases, respectively). Unlike the heavenly Moon which has spots and it waxes and wanes, your Moon in the form of pious glory shall always remain intact on the horizon and it will never set. It will never wane in the skies of this world, but in fact will always grow bigger and bigger…

त्रैलोक्य रूपी चकवा इस यश रूपी चन्द्रमा पर अत्यन्त प्रेम करेगा और प्रभु श्री रामचन्द्रजी का प्रताप रूपी सूर्य इसकी छबि को हरण नहीं करेगा। यह चन्द्रमा रात-दिन सदा सब किसी को सुख देने वाला होगा। कैकेयी का कुकर्म रूपी राहु इसे ग्रास नहीं करेगा॥2॥
English Translation:
…Chakwa bird in the form of the three worlds shall immensely love it (your pious glory in the from of the Moon), while the Sun in the form of Shri Ram’s glory shall never rob it of its splendour. Day and night, it will continue to provide joy to everyone. And Rahu, in the form of Kaikeyi’s acts, shall never devour it…
भावार्थ:
यह चन्द्रमा श्री रामचन्द्रजी के सुंदर प्रेम रूपी अमृत से पूर्ण है। यह गुरु के अपमान रूपी दोष से दूषित नहीं है। तुमने इस यश रूपी चन्द्रमा की सृष्टि करके पृथ्वी पर भी अमृत को सुलभ कर दिया। अब श्री रामजी के भक्त इस अमृत से तृप्त हो लें॥3॥
English Translation:
…It (your glory in the form of Moon) is full of nectar of Shri Ram’s beautiful love. And it is not tainted by the defect of insulting the Guru (unlike Moon that was cursed by his Guru, you will never be punished by your Guru because of your allegiance towards Shri Ram’s devotion instead of coronation as King of Ayodhya). Now the devotees of Shri Ram will be fully satisfied by the nectar of devotion (flowing from the moonbeams of your glory), that you have made easily accessible on Earth…

…King Bhagirath (your ancestor) brought down the celestial river Ganga from Heaven, the mere thought of whom (Ganga ji) is the repository of all auspiciousness. One cannot count the collection of virtues of King Dashrath. What more can one say, there is no one like him in the entire world…

जिनके प्रेम और संकोच (शील) के वश में होकर स्वयं (सच्चिदानंदघन) भगवान श्री राम आकर प्रकट हुए, जिन्हें श्री महादेवजी अपने हृदय के नेत्रों से कभी अघाकर नहीं देख पाए (अर्थात जिनका स्वरूप हृदय में देखते-देखते शिवजी कभी तृप्त नहीं हुए)॥209॥

…Attracted by Dashrath ji’s love and amiability, Shri Ram appeared in a human avatar on Earth. (He is the same Shri Ram) whom Lord Shiv always keeps meditating upon, but the eyes of his heart never get fully satisfied beholding His form…

(परन्तु उनसे भी बढ़कर) तुमने कीर्ति रूपी अनुपम चंद्रमा को उत्पन्न किया, जिसमें श्री राम प्रेम ही हिरन के (चिह्न के) रूप में बसता है। हे तात! तुम व्यर्थ ही हृदय में ग्लानि कर रहे हो। पारस पाकर भी तुम दरिद्रता से डर रहे हो!॥1॥
English Translation:
…You have created a matchless moon of your glory in which Ram’s love resides in the form of a deer (the spot on the moon). O’ Son, do not feel guilty in your heart. You fear poverty, even though you have found the stone that turns iron into gold…
भावार्थ:
हे भरत! सुनो, हम झूठ नहीं कहते। हम उदासीन हैं (किसी का पक्ष नहीं करते), तपस्वी हैं (किसी की मुँह देखी नहीं कहते) और वन में रहते हैं (किसी से कुछ प्रयोजन नहीं रखते)। सब साधनों का उत्तम फल हमें लक्ष्मणजी, श्री रामजी और सीताजी का दर्शन प्राप्त हुआ॥2॥
English Translation:
…Listen, O’ Bharat, I do not lie. I am an ascetic and hermit who lives in the forest (being aloof and engrossed in the Supreme Truth, sages do not have to make up things, instead we speak truthfully). The prime and beautiful fruit of all accomplishments is to behold Lakshman, Ram and Sita with one’s eyes and I have achieved this…
भावार्थ:
(सीता-लक्ष्मण सहित श्री रामदर्शन रूप) उस महान फल का परम फल यह तुम्हारा दर्शन है! प्रयागराज समेत हमारा बड़ा भाग्य है। हे भरत! तुम धन्य हो, तुमने अपने यश से जगत को जीत लिया है। ऐसा कहकर मुनि प्रेम में मग्न हो गए॥3॥
English Translation:
…And the ultimate fruit of that fruit itself (seeing Shri Ram, Sita ji and Lakshman ji) is to behold your sight. It is a great fortune for Prayag (the holiest pilgrimage that gratifies others is itself feeling gratified by your sight), as well as for all of us. Bharat you are great, your glory has conquered the entire world.” Saying these words, Sage Bhardwaj became overwhelmed with emotion.
भावार्थ:
भरद्वाज मुनि के वचन सुनकर सभासद् हर्षित हो गए। ‘साधु-साधु’ कहकर सराहना करते हुए देवताओं ने फूल बरसाए। आकाश में और प्रयागराज में ‘धन्य, धन्य’ की ध्वनि सुन-सुनकर भरतजी प्रेम में मग्न हो रहे हैं॥4॥
English Translation:
Hearing the Sage’s words, everyone in the assembly became extremely happy. The Demigods praised Bharat ji by saying, “You are great, You are great”… and rained down flowers (on Bharat ji) from the sky. The sound of applauses echoed in the sky and on the ground in Prayag. Hearing this, Bharat ji felt overwhelmed with joy.
भावार्थ:
भरतजी का शरीर पुलकित है, हृदय में श्री सीता-रामजी हैं और कमल के समान नेत्र (प्रेमाश्रु के) जल से भरे हैं। वे मुनियों की मंडली को प्रणाम करके गद्गद वचन बोले।
English Translation:
Bharat ji’s body was thrilling with emotion. Adorned with Shri Ram and Sita ji in his heart, his lotus-like eyes were filled with tears, he bowed to the assembly of sages and spoke in a voice choked with sentiments…
भावार्थ:
मुनियों का समाज है और फिर तीर्थराज है। यहाँ सच्ची सौगंध खाने से भी भरपूर हानि होती है। इस स्थान में यदि कुछ बनाकर कहा जाए, तो इसके समान कोई बड़ा पाप और नीचता न होगी।
English Translation:
The assembly of Sages and the King of Pilgrimages Prayag, is present here. Even to take an honest oath here can incur a lot of harm. And if one tells a lie here, then there can be no bigger sin or heinous act…
भावार्थ:
मैं सच्चे भाव से कहता हूँ। आप सर्वज्ञ हैं और श्री रघुनाथजी हृदय के भीतर की जानने वाले हैं (मैं कुछ भी असत्य कहूँगा तो आपसे और उनसे छिपा नहीं रह सकता)। मुझे माता कैकेयी की करनी का कुछ भी सोच नहीं है और न मेरे मन में इसी बात का दुःख है कि जगत मुझे नीच समझेगा।
English Translation:
I speak truthfully and you are the knower of everything, while the Chief of Raghus, Shri Ram knows what is in everyone’s heart. I don’t have any lamentation about my mother’s wrong doings, nor I am sorrowful in my heart if the world sees me as a sinful person …
भावार्थ:
न यही डर है कि मेरा परलोक बिगड़ जाएगा और न पिताजी के मरने का ही मुझे शोक है, क्योंकि उनका सुंदर पुण्य और सुयश विश्व भर में सुशोभित है। उन्होंने श्री राम-लक्ष्मण सरीखे पुत्र पाए।
English Translation:
I am not afraid if my life after death gets spoiled nor am I sad about my father’s demise because his beautiful fame is spread across all the spheres of the cosmos due to his pious deeds. He had sons like Shri Ram and Lakshman…
भावार्थ:
फिर जिन्होंने श्री रामचन्द्रजी के विरह में अपने क्षणभंगुर शरीर को त्याग दिया, ऐसे राजा के लिए सोच करने का कौन प्रसंग है? (सोच इसी बात का है कि) श्री रामजी, लक्ष्मणजी और सीताजी पैरों में बिना जूती के मुनियों का वेष बनाए वन-वन में फिरते हैं।
English Translation:
…and he is the one who renounced his life within minutes as a result of separation from Shri Ram. There is no context to grieve for such a King. Shri Ram, Lakshman and Sita ji roam in the forests without slippers, dressed as hermits…
भावार्थ:
वे वल्कल वस्त्र पहनते हैं, फलों का भोजन करते हैं, पृथ्वी पर कुश और पत्ते बिछाकर सोते हैं और वृक्षों के नीचे निवास करके नित्य सर्दी, गर्मी, वर्षा और हवा सहते हैं।
English Translation:
Clad in deerskin, they consume only fruits as food, they sleep on the ground by spreading kusha grass and leaves. Taking shelter under trees, they endure cold, burning heat, rain and strong winds every day…
भावार्थ:
इसी दुःख की जलन से निरंतर मेरी छाती जलती रहती है। मुझे न दिन में भूख लगती है, न रात को नींद आती है। मैंने मन ही मन समस्त विश्व को खोज डाला, पर इस कुरोग की औषध कहीं नहीं है।
English Translation:
This is my agony from which my chest burns everyday. I do not feel hungry during the day nor am I able to sleep at night. I have explored the entire world in my heart and come to the conclusion that there is no medicine that can cure my illness…
भावार्थ:
माता का कुमत (बुरा विचार) पापों का मूल बढ़ई है। उसने हमारे हित का बसूला बनाया। उससे कलह रूपी कुकाठ का कुयंत्र बनाया और चौदह वर्ष की अवधि रूपी कठिन कुमंत्र पढ़कर उस यंत्र को गाड़ दिया। (यहाँ माता का कुविचार बढ़ई है, भरत को राज्य बसूला है, राम का वनवास कुयंत्र है और चौदह वर्ष की अवधि कुमंत्र है)
English Translation:
My mother’s evil mind represents a sinful carpenter who made a tool to carve out my welfare (coronation as King of Ayodhya). She used destructive and inauspicious wood to make this terrible tool and casting a bad spell on it (of fourteen years of exile for Shri Ram), she buried the tool (in the soil of Ayodhya)…
भावार्थ:
मेरे लिए उसने यह सारा कुठाट (बुरा साज) रचा और सारे जगत को बारहबाट (छिन्न-भिन्न) करके नष्ट कर डाला। यह कुयोग श्री रामचन्द्रजी के लौट आने पर ही मिट सकता है और तभी अयोध्या बस सकती है, दूसरे किसी उपाय से नहीं।
English Translation:
This conspiracy was planned for my sake, which has destroyed the world by breaking it into many pieces. This unfavourable time period shall end only when Shri Ram returns. By no other means can Ayodhya ever thrive again.”
भावार्थ:
भरतजी के वचन सुनकर मुनि ने सुख पाया और सभी ने उनकी बहुत प्रकार से बड़ाई की। (मुनि ने कहा-) हे तात! अधिक सोच मत करो। श्री रामचन्द्रजी के चरणों का दर्शन करते ही सारा दुःख मिट जाएगा।
English Translation:
Hearing Bharat ji’s words, the Sage felt delighted and everyone praised him in many ways. The Sage said, “O’ Son, do not feel so distressed, all your sorrows will disappear the moment you will behold Ram’s feet.”
भावार्थ:
इस प्रकार मुनिश्रेष्ठ भरद्वाजजी ने उनका समाधान करके कहा- अब आप लोग हमारे प्रेम प्रिय अतिथि बनिए और कृपा करके कंद-मूल, फल-फूल जो कुछ हम दें, स्वीकार कीजिए।
English Translation:
After comforting Bharat ji, the Chief of Sages; Bhardwaj ji said, “Now please (accept our invitation and) become our dearly loved guest and happily accept whatever roots, bulbs, fruits and flowers that we offer you.”
भावार्थ:
मुनि के वचन सुनकर भरत के हृदय में सोच हुआ कि यह बेमौके बड़ा बेढब संकोच आ पड़ा! फिर गुरुजनों की वाणी को महत्वपूर्ण (आदरणीय) समझकर, चरणों की वंदना करके हाथ जोड़कर बोले-।
English Translation:
Hearing the Sage’s words Bharat ji felt distressed in his heart. Knowing that this was not the right occasion (to accept an invitation to dine when he should be fasting), he hesitated. But then realizing the importance of Guru’s words, he bowed at the Sage’s feet and replied with joined palms,…
भावार्थ:
हे नाथ! आपकी आज्ञा को सिर चढ़ाकर उसका पालन करना, यह हमारा परम धर्म है। भरतजी के ये वचन मुनिश्रेष्ठ के मन को अच्छे लगे। उन्होंने विश्वासपात्र सेवकों और शिष्यों को पास बुलाया।
English Translation:
“I will accept your orders reverently. This is my prime duty, O’ Lord.” The Sage’s heart was touched by Bharat ji’s words and he called upon his trusted servants and students to come by his side.
भावार्थ:
(और कहा कि) भरत की पहुनाई करनी चाहिए। जाकर कंद, मूल और फल लाओ। उन्होंने ‘हे नाथ! बहुत अच्छा’ कहकर सिर नवाया और तब वे बड़े आनंदित होकर अपने-अपने काम को चल दिए।
English Translation:
The Sage said, “I would like to extend gracious hospitality towards Bharat. Go and get roots, bulbs and fruits.” They bowed their heads and said, “Very well, O’ Lord” and gladly proceeded to perform their assigned tasks.
भावार्थ:
मुनि को चिंता हुई कि हमने बहुत बड़े मेहमान को न्योता है। अब जैसा देवता हो, वैसी ही उसकी पूजा भी होनी चाहिए। यह सुनकर ऋद्धियाँ और अणिमादि सिद्धियाँ आ गईं (और बोलीं-) हे गोसाईं! जो आपकी आज्ञा हो सो हम करें।
English Translation:
The Sage got worried that he had invited a distinguished royal guest for food (and guests are considered and served as Gods in Hindu religion). Gods must be worshipped according to his or her rank and so a royal guest like Bharat ji must also be looked after accordingly. Hearing the Sage’s thoughts, various divine supernatural powers, namely, Riddhi, Siddhi and other eight powers like Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakamaye, Ichita and Vashita came to the Sage and said, “O’ Lord, give us your orders, and we will carry those out.”
