Janak on Bharat

अस कहि पग परि प्रेम अति सिय हित बिनय सुनाइ।
सिय समेत सियमातु तब चली सुआयसु पाइ॥285॥

भावार्थ:
ऐसा कहकर बड़े प्रेम से पैरों पड़कर सीताजी (को साथ भेजने) के लिए विनती करके और सुंदर आज्ञा पाकर तब सीताजी समेत सीताजी की माता डेरे को चलीं॥285॥

English Translation:
After uttering these words, Queen Sunayana lovingly bowed at the feet of Kaushalya ji and humbly requested to take Sita ji with her. Upon receiving Kaushalya ji’s gracious permission, she took Sita ji along with her.

प्रिय परिजनहि मिली बैदेही। जो जेहि जोगु भाँति तेहि तेही॥
तापस बेष जानकी देखी। भा सबु बिकल बिषाद बिसेषी॥1॥

भावार्थ:
जानकीजी अपने प्यारे कुटुम्बियों से- जो जिस योग्य था, उससे उसी प्रकार मिलीं। जानकीजी को तपस्विनी के वेष में देखकर सभी शोक से अत्यन्त व्याकुल हो गए॥1॥

English Translation:
Sita ji then warmly greeted Her beloved relatives, each in accordance with their respective relationship. Upon seeing Sita ji dressed in Her hermit attire, everyone felt distressed and profoundly saddened.

जनक राम गुर आयसु पाई। चले थलहि सिय देखी आई॥
लीन्हि लाइ उर जनक जानकी। पाहुनि पावन प्रेम प्रान की॥2॥

भावार्थ:
जनकजी श्री रामजी के गुरु वशिष्ठजी की आज्ञा पाकर डेरे को चले और आकर उन्होंने सीताजी को देखा। जनकजी ने अपने पवित्र प्रेम और प्राणों की पाहुनी जानकीजी को हृदय से लगा लिया॥2॥

English Translation:
In the interim, with Guru Vashishth ji’s approval, King Janak came to visit Sita ji. Janak ji embraced his daughter Janaki ji, the cherished guest of his pure love and life.

उर उमगेउ अंबुधि अनुरागू। भयउ भूप मनु मनहुँ पयागू॥
सिय सनेह बटु बाढ़त जोहा। ता पर राम पेम सिसु सोहा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
उनके हृदय में (वात्सल्य) प्रेम का समुद्र उमड़ पड़ा। राजा का मन मानो प्रयाग हो गया। उस समुद्र के अंदर उन्होंने (आदि शक्ति) सीताजी के (अलौकिक) स्नेह रूपी अक्षयवट को बढ़ते हुए देखा। उस (सीताजी के प्रेम रूपी वट) पर श्री रामजी का प्रेम रूपी बालक (बाल रूप धारी भगवान) सुशोभित हो रहा है॥3॥

English Translation:
An immense ocean of love brimmed up in King Janak’s heart, resembling the sacred Prayag, the confluence of three rivers. Within his heart, he witnessed a sacred Akshay tree, representing boundless love of Sita ji, continually growing and crowned with the presence of Shri Ram in the form of a child, the very embodiment of love.

चिरजीवी मुनि ग्यान बिकल जनु। बूड़त लहेउ बाल अवलंबनु॥
मोह मगन मति नहिं बिदेह की। महिमा सिय रघुबर सनेह की॥4॥

भावार्थ:
जनकजी का ज्ञान रूपी चिरंजीवी (मार्कण्डेय) मुनि व्याकुल होकर डूबते-डूबते मानो उस श्री राम प्रेम रूपी बालक का सहारा पाकर बच गया। वस्तुतः (ज्ञानिशिरोमणि) विदेहराज की बुद्धि मोह में मग्न नहीं है। यह तो श्री सीता-रामजी के प्रेम की महिमा है (जिसने उन जैसे महान ज्ञानी के ज्ञान को भी विकल कर दिया)॥4॥

English Translation:
King Janak’s wisdom in the form of the immortal Sage (Markandey) was greatly bewildered and was on the brink of being submerged in the waters (of divine love) when he found support in the infant Shri Ram, and was ultimately saved. While Janak ji’s mind remained untouched by infatuation, it was the glory of the pure and unadulterated love that he held for Shri Raghuveer and Sita ji.

सिय पितु मातु सनेह बस बिकल न सकी सँभारि।
धरनिसुताँ धीरजु धरेउ समउ सुधरमु बिचारि॥286॥

भावार्थ:
पिता-माता के प्रेम के मारे सीताजी ऐसी विकल हो गईं कि अपने को सँभाल न सकीं। (परन्तु परम धैर्यवती) पृथ्वी की कन्या सीताजी ने समय और सुंदर धर्म का विचार कर धैर्य धारण किया॥286॥

English Translation:
In Her overwhelming love for Her father and mother, Sita ji couldn’t contain Her emotions. However, the daughter of the Earth, (the embodiment of patience) Sita ji, regained Her composure by realizing the significance of the moment and Her rightful duty.

तापस बेष जनक सिय देखी। भयउ पेमु परितोषु बिसेषी॥
पुत्रि पबित्र किए कुल दोऊ। सुजस धवल जगु कह सबु कोऊ॥1॥

भावार्थ:
सीताजी को तपस्विनी वेष में देखकर जनकजी को विशेष प्रेम और संतोष हुआ। (उन्होंने कहा-) बेटी! तूने दोनों कुल पवित्र कर दिए। तेरे निर्मल यश से सारा जगत उज्ज्वल हो रहा है, ऐसा सब कोई कहते हैं॥1॥

English Translation:
Upon seeing Sita ji dressed as a hermit, he was overwhelmed with love and contentment. He proudly praised, “Daughter, You have sanctified both sides of the family. Your glory is radiating throughout the world, and everyone is acknowledging it…

जिति सुरसरि कीरति सरि तोरी। गवनु कीन्ह बिधि अंड करोरी॥
गंग अवनि थल तीनि बड़ेरे। एहिं किए साधु समाज घनेरे॥2॥

भावार्थ:
तेरी कीर्ति रूपी नदी देवनदी गंगाजी को भी जीतकर (जो एक ही ब्रह्माण्ड में बहती है) करोड़ों ब्रह्माण्डों में बह चली है। गंगाजी ने तो पृथ्वी पर तीन ही स्थानों (हरिद्वार, प्रयागराज और गंगासागर) को बड़ा (तीर्थ) बनाया है। पर तेरी इस कीर्ति नदी ने तो अनेकों संत समाज रूपी तीर्थ स्थान बना दिए हैं॥2॥

English Translation:
…Your glorious fame has eclipsed even the celestial river Ganga as it has pierced through millions of universes. While Ganga ji has bestowed Her glory upon only three places on Earth (Haridwar, Prayagraj, and Gangasagar), Your virtuous renown has elevated the countless gatherings of revered sages.”

पितु कह सत्य सनेहँ सुबानी। सीय सकुच महुँ मनहुँ समानी॥
पुनि पितु मातु लीन्हि उर लाई। सिख आसिष हित दीन्हि सुहाई॥3॥

भावार्थ:
पिता जनकजी ने तो स्नेह से सच्ची सुंदर वाणी कही, परन्तु अपनी बड़ाई सुनकर सीताजी मानो संकोच में समा गईं। पिता-माता ने उन्हें फिर हृदय से लगा लिया और हितभरी सुंदर सीख और आशीष दिया॥3॥

English Translation:
Upon hearing Her father’s sincere and affectionate words of praise, it appeared as though Sita ji’s heart got immersed in the sea of bashfulness. Her parents, once more, embraced Her and imparted their beautiful and favourable advice and blessings.

कहति न सीय सकुचि मन माहीं। इहाँ बसब रजनीं भल नाहीं॥
लखि रुख रानि जनायउ राऊ। हृदयँ सराहत सीलु सुभाऊ॥4॥

भावार्थ:
सीताजी कुछ कहती नहीं हैं, परन्तु सकुचा रही हैं कि रात में (सासुओं की सेवा छोड़कर) यहाँ रहना अच्छा नहीं है। रानी सुनयनाजी ने जानकीजी का रुख देखकर (उनके मन की बात समझकर) राजा जनकजी को जना दिया। तब दोनों अपने हृदयों में सीताजी के शील और स्वभाव की सराहना करने लगे॥4॥

English Translation:
Sita ji remained silent but experienced a sense of unease in Her heart. She believed that it would be more appropriate for her to spend the night with Shri Ram & His mothers, rather than staying overnight with Her parents. Sita ji’s mothers, sensing Her thoughts, conveyed this to King Janak. In their hearts, both of Her parents praised Sita ji’s gracious and considerate nature.

बार बार मिलि भेंटि सिय बिदा कीन्हि सनमानि।
कही समय सिर भरत गति रानि सुबानि सयानि॥287॥

भावार्थ:
राजा-रानी ने बार-बार मिलकर और हृदय से लगाकर तथा सम्मान करके सीताजी को विदा किया। चतुर रानी ने समय पाकर राजा से सुंदर वाणी में भरतजी की दशा का वर्णन किया॥287॥

English Translation:
After embracing Sita ji repeatedly, she was courteously escorted to Her quarters. Subsequently, at an opportune moment, the all-wise Queen Sunayana gently conveyed Bharat ji’s emotional state to the King.

सुनि भूपाल भरत ब्यवहारू। सोन सुगंध सुधा ससि सारू॥
मूदे सजन नयन पुलके तन। सुजसु सराहन लगे मुदित मन॥1॥

भावार्थ:
सोने में सुगंध और (समुद्र से निकली हुई) सुधा में चन्द्रमा के सार अमृत के समान भरतजी का व्यवहार सुनकर राजा ने (प्रेम विह्वल होकर) अपने (प्रेमाश्रुओं के) जल से भरे नेत्रों को मूँद लिया (वे भरतजी के प्रेम में मानो ध्यानस्थ हो गए)। वे शरीर से पुलकित हो गए और मन में आनंदित होकर भरतजी के सुंदर यश की सराहना करने लगे॥1॥

English Translation:
Upon hearing of Bharat ji’s renowned conduct, which was like the gold with fragrance and the sweet nectar of the moon, the King was overwhelmed with affection. He closed his eyes, and a thrill ran through his body. With joy, he began to sing praises of Shri Bharat’s splendid reputation.

सावधान सुनु सुमुखि सुलोचनि। भरत कथा भव बंध बिमोचनि॥
धरम राजनय ब्रह्मबिचारू। इहाँ जथामति मोर प्रचारू॥2॥

भावार्थ:
(वे बोले-) हे सुमुखि! हे सुनयनी! सावधान होकर सुनो। भरतजी की कथा संसार के बंधन से छुड़ाने वाली है। धर्म, राजनीति और ब्रह्मविचार- इन तीनों विषयों में अपनी बुद्धि के अनुसार मेरी (थोड़ी-बहुत) गति है (अर्थात इनके संबंध में मैं कुछ जानता हूँ)॥2॥

English Translation:
King Janak spoke, “O’ Beautiful faced, lovely-eyed Sunayana, listen attentively, the glorious tale of Bharat can help people to break the cycle of mundane existence. I do possess some understanding of righteous deeds, politics, and contemplation of the Supreme Being, according to my intellect,…

सो मति मोरि भरत महिमाही। कहै काह छलि छुअति न छाँही॥
बिधि गनपति अहिपति सिव सारद। कबि कोबिद बुध बुद्धि बिसारद॥3॥

भावार्थ:
वह (धर्म, राजनीति और ब्रह्मज्ञान में प्रवेश रखने वाली) मेरी बुद्धि भरतजी की महिमा का वर्णन तो क्या करे, छल करके भी उसकी छाया तक को नहीं छू पाती! ब्रह्माजी, गणेशजी, शेषजी, महादेवजी, सरस्वतीजी, कवि, ज्ञानी, पण्डित और बुद्धिमान-॥3॥

English Translation:
…but my mind remains incapable of attempting to narrate Bharat’s glory. Even by using clever techniques, it cannot even touch the shadow of Bharat’s fame. Lord Brahma, Lord Ganesh, King of Serpents (Shesha ji), Lord Shiv, Goddess Sharda (Saraswati ji), poets, knowledgeable experts, pundits and wise men…

भरत चरित कीरति करतूती। धरम सील गुन बिमल बिभूती॥
समुझत सुनत सुखद सब काहू। सुचि सुरसरि रुचि निदर सुधाहू॥4॥

भावार्थ:
सब किसी को भरतजी के चरित्र, कीर्ति, करनी, धर्म, शील, गुण और निर्मल ऐश्वर्य समझने में और सुनने में सुख देने वाले हैं और पवित्रता में गंगाजी का तथा स्वाद (मधुरता) में अमृत का भी तिरस्कार करने वाले हैं॥4॥

English Translation:
…all of them find Bharat’s character, renown, actions, righteousness, amiability, virtues, and sacred fame delightful to hear and understand. His character can outshine the purity of the river Ganga and the sweetness of nectar…

निरवधि गुन निरुपम पुरुषु भरतु भरत सम जानि।
कहिअ सुमेरु कि सेर सम कबिकुल मति सकुचानि॥288॥

भावार्थ:
भरतजी असीम गुण सम्पन्न और उपमारहित पुरुष हैं। भरतजी के समान बस, भरतजी ही हैं, ऐसा जानो। सुमेरु पर्वत को क्या सेर के बराबर कह सकते हैं? इसलिए (उन्हें किसी पुरुष के साथ उपमा देने में) कवि समाज की बुद्धि भी सकुचा गई।

English Translation:
Bharat possesses countless virtues that are beyond comparison, and only Bharat can be compared to himself. Trying to equate him with anyone or anything else is like describing the mighty Sumeru mountain as a mere object weighing only a kilogram. The minds of the poet community hesitate in describing the extent of Bharat’s virtues.

अगम सबहि बरनत बरबरनी। जिमि जलहीन मीन गमु धरनी॥
भरत अमित महिमा सुनु रानी। जानहिं रामु न सकहिं बखानी॥1॥

भावार्थ:
हे श्रेष्ठ वर्णवाली! भरतजी की महिमा का वर्णन करना सभी के लिए वैसे ही अगम है जैसे जलरहित पृथ्वी पर मछली का चलना। हे रानी! सुनो, भरतजी की अपरिमित महिमा को एक श्री रामचन्द्रजी ही जानते हैं, किन्तु वे भी उसका वर्णन नहीं कर सकते।

English Translation:
Oh, fair-skinned lady, describing the virtues of Bharat is as impossible as a fish trying to walk on dry land. Lord Ram is aware of Bharat’s fame, yet even He is humbled when attempting to express the limitless glory of Bharat, O’ Queen.

बरनि सप्रेम भरत अनुभाऊ। तिय जिय की रुचि लखि कह राऊ॥
बहुरहिं लखनु भरतु बन जाहीं। सब कर भल सब के मन माहीं॥2॥

भावार्थ:
इस प्रकार प्रेमपूर्वक भरतजी के प्रभाव का वर्णन करके, फिर पत्नी के मन की रुचि जानकर राजा ने कहा- लक्ष्मणजी लौट जाएँ और भरतजी वन को जाएँ, इसमें सभी का भला है और यही सबके मन में है।

English Translation:
In this manner, King Janak, having extolled the great renown of Bharat and respecting his wife’s innermost thoughts and heart’s desire, declared, “Lakshman should return to Ayodhya, and Bharat should proceed to the forest. This decision will be beneficial for all and this is what everyone unanimously wishes for deep down in their hearts.

देबि परन्तु भरत रघुबर की। प्रीति प्रतीति जाइ नहिं तरकी॥
भरतु अवधि सनेह ममता की। जद्यपि रामु सीम समता की॥3॥

भावार्थ:
परन्तु हे देवि! भरतजी और श्री रामचन्द्रजी का प्रेम और एक-दूसरे पर विश्वास, बुद्धि और विचार की सीमा में नहीं आ सकता। यद्यपि श्री रामचन्द्रजी समता की सीमा हैं, तथापि भरतजी प्रेम और ममता की सीमा हैं।

English Translation:
But, dear Lady, when it comes to Bharat and Ram, one cannot fathom the depth of love and trust that they have for each other. Bharat’s affection and warmth know no bounds, while Ram’s self-control is beyond measure.

परमारथ स्वारथ सुख सारे। भरत न सपनेहुँ मनहुँ निहारे॥
साधन सिद्धि राम पग नेहू। मोहि लखि परत भरत मत एहू॥4॥

भावार्थ:
(श्री रामचन्द्रजी के प्रति अनन्य प्रेम को छोड़कर) भरतजी ने समस्त परमार्थ, स्वार्थ और सुखों की ओर स्वप्न में भी मन से भी नहीं ताका है। श्री रामजी के चरणों का प्रेम ही उनका साधन है और वही सिद्धि है। मुझे तो भरतजी का बस, यही एक मात्र सिद्धांत जान पड़ता है।

English Translation:
Bharat’s sole and unwavering devotion lies in the feet of Shri Ram. He has no interest in either spiritual or worldly pursuits, nor does he seek personal comforts, even in his dreams. Devotion to Ram’s feet is his primary duty and the ultimate purpose of his life. This is my perspective on Bharat in my thoughts.

भोरेहुँ भरत न पेलिहहिं मनसहुँ राम रजाइ।
करिअ न सोचु सनेह बस कहेउ भूप बिलखाइ॥289॥

भावार्थ:
राजा ने बिलखकर (प्रेम से गद्गद होकर) कहा- भरतजी भूलकर भी श्री रामचन्द्रजी की आज्ञा को मन से भी नहीं टालेंगे। अतः स्नेह के वश होकर चिंता नहीं करनी चाहिए।

English Translation:
Bharat will never disobey Shri Ram’s orders in his heart. Therefore, we should not worry, under the influence of affection,” the King spoke firmly with conviction.

राम भरत गुन गनत सप्रीती। निसि दंपतिहि पलक सम बीती॥
राज समाज प्रात जुग जागे। न्हाइ न्हाइ सुर पूजन लागे॥1॥

भावार्थ:
श्री रामजी और भरतजी के गुणों की प्रेमपूर्वक गणना करते (कहते-सुनते) पति-पत्नी को रात पलक के समान बीत गई। प्रातःकाल दोनों राजसमाज जागे और नहा-नहाकर देवताओं की पूजा करने लगे।

English Translation:
In this manner, lovingly recounting the countless virtues of Shri Ram and Shri Bharat, the night passed swiftly for the King and his wife. In the morning, both sides woke up and after bathing, began their worship of the Gods.

गे नहाइ गुर पहिं रघुराई। बंदि चरन बोले रुख पाई॥
नाथ भरतु पुरजन महतारी। सोक बिकल बनबास दुखारी॥2॥

भावार्थ:
श्री रघुनाथजी स्नान करके गुरु वशिष्ठजी के पास गए और चरणों की वंदना करके उनका रुख पाकर बोले- हे नाथ! भरत, अवधपुर वासी तथा माताएँ, सब शोक से व्याकुल और वनवास से दुःखी हैं।

English Translation:
After bathing, Shri Raghurai went to His Guru. He bowed at Guru Vashishth’s feet and upon receiving his permission, Shri Ram said, ‘O’ Lord, Bharat, the citizens, and all the mothers are distressed with grief and inconvenienced by their stay in the forest…

सहित समाज राउ मिथिलेसू। बहुत दिवस भए सहत कलेसू॥
उचित होइ सोइ कीजिअ नाथा। हित सबही कर रौरें हाथा॥3॥

भावार्थ:
मिथिलापति राजा जनकजी को भी समाज सहित क्लेश सहते बहुत दिन हो गए, इसलिए हे नाथ! जो उचित हो वही कीजिए। आप ही के हाथ सभी का हित है।

English Translation:
Even the King of Mithila, along with his people, has been enduring the hardships of the forest for many days. Therefore, do what you believe is appropriate. The welfare of everyone rests in your hands.

अस कहि अति सकुचे रघुराऊ। मुनि पुल के लखि सीलु सुभाऊ॥
तुम्ह बिनु राम सकल सुख साजा। नरक सरिस दुहु राज समाजा॥4॥

भावार्थ:
ऐसा कहकर श्री रघुनाथजी अत्यन्त ही सकुचा गए। उनका शील स्वभाव देखकर (प्रेम और आनंद से) मुनि वशिष्ठजी पुलकित हो गए। (उन्होंने खुलकर कहा-) हे राम! तुम्हारे बिना (घर-बार आदि) सम्पूर्ण सुखों के साज दोनों राजसमाजों को नरक के समान हैं।

English Translation:
Saying these words, the finest of the Raghus, Shri Ram felt modest. Observing Shri Ram’s humility, the Sage was overwhelmed with love. Guru Vashishtha said, “O’ Ram, without You, the abundance of pleasures is like hell for the people of both the royal camps…

प्रान-प्रान के जीव के जिव सुख के सुख राम।
तुम्ह तजि तात सोहात गृह जिन्हहि तिन्हहि बिधि बाम॥290॥

भावार्थ:
हे राम! तुम प्राणों के भी प्राण, आत्मा के भी आत्मा और सुख के भी सुख हो। हे तात! तुम्हें छोड़कर जिन्हें घर सुहाता है, उन्हे विधाता विपरीत है।

English Translation:
O’ Ram, You are the life of life, the soul of soul and the joy of joy. (You are the all-pervasive supreme consciousness that powers the life force in all beings, without You there can simply be no life. You are the source of infinite happiness for all, as a mere drop of Your bliss radiates joy across the three worlds). O’ Son, those who prefer the comfort of their homes over being with You, fate is surely unfavourable towards them…

सो सुखु करमु धरमु जरि जाऊ। जहँ न राम पद पंकज भाऊ॥
जोगु कुजोगु ग्यानु अग्यानू। जहँ नहिं राम प्रेम परधानू॥1॥

भावार्थ:
जहाँ श्री राम के चरण कमलों में प्रेम नहीं है, वह सुख, कर्म और धर्म जल जाए, जिसमें श्री राम प्रेम की प्रधानता नहीं है, वह योग कुयोग है और वह ज्ञान अज्ञान है।

English Translation:
May all the happiness, hard work and righteous deeds turn to ashes, where there is no devotion for the lotus feet of Shri Ram (Yourself). That penance is futile and knowledge worthless, in which love for Shri Ram (You) is not given the highest stature…

तुम्ह बिनु दुखी सुखी तुम्ह तेहीं। तुम्ह जानहु जिय जो जेहि केहीं॥
राउर आयसु सिर सबही कें। बिदित कृपालहि गति सब नीकें॥2॥

भावार्थ:
तुम्हारे बिना ही सब दुःखी हैं और जो सुखी हैं वे तुम्हीं से सुखी हैं। जिस किसी के जी में जो कुछ है तुम सब जानते हो। आपकी आज्ञा सभी के सिर पर है। कृपालु (आप) को सभी की स्थिति अच्छी तरह मालूम है।

English Translation:
Without You, people experience sorrow, and those who find happiness do so only through Your grace. You understand the depths of every heart and Your command rules over all (Everyone will accept and follow whatever You say). O’ Compassionate One, you are fully aware of everyone’s state…

आपु आश्रमहि धारिअ पाऊ। भयउ सनेह सिथिल मुनिराऊ॥
करि प्रनामु तब रामु सिधाए। रिषि धरि धीर जनक पहिं आए॥3॥

भावार्थ:
अतः आप आश्रम को पधारिए। इतना कह मुनिराज स्नेह से शिथिल हो गए। तब श्री रामजी प्रणाम करके चले गए और ऋषि वशिष्ठजी धीरज धरकर जनकजी के पास आए।

English Translation:
Hence You may now return to the Hermitage,” said the Chief of Sages, his body overpowered with emotion. Then Ram ji paid his respects to Guru Vashishth and departed. The Sage, regaining his composure approached King Janak.

राम बचन गुरु नृपहि सुनाए। सील सनेह सुभायँ सुहाए॥
महाराज अब कीजिअ सोई। सब कर धरम सहित हित होई॥4॥

भावार्थ:
गुरुजी ने श्री रामचन्द्रजी के शील और स्नेह से युक्त स्वभाव से ही सुंदर वचन राजा जनकजी को सुनाए (और कहा-) हे महाराज! अब वही कीजिए, जिसमें सबका धर्म सहित हित हो।

English Translation:
The Sage conveyed Shri Ram’s humble, affectionate, and naturally pleasing words to the King. He added, “O’ King, now act in a manner that aligns with the well-being of everyone, as well as the religious principles laid out in the Scriptures…
